His family came to the U.S. and like many immigrants practiced assimilation to fit in including taking on American names. Lucky for us though he didn't continue trying to fit in as he sought to blaze his own trail and find what he could uniquely do in his own career. As a dope storyteller, you'll enjoy listening to his pivots in life and learning from how he bet on himself as the "product".Episode References:- Management Leaders for Tomorrow (MLT) - The Consortium - Toigo Foundation - Forte - Riordan Programs (UCLA) - Just Like Media Connect with Jerry at:Website LinkedIn

When’s the last time you had a conversation with someone of Asian descent? Not just a transactional conversation, or a “hi how are you” mumbled in passing, but one where you saw them as a product of their history and experiences and asked them something perhaps more sensitive and interesting than “where are YOU from?” Something about their goals, their passions, and how their identities may have played into shaping who they are, rather than relying on the stereotypes that are so pervasive in American culture? Our guest today, Jerry Won, is the host of Dear Asian Americans, a podcast featured by Apple Podcasts at the TOP of the list of podcasts to listen to for Asian American Pacific Islander Month this May. His podcast growth has more than quadrupled since the latest slew of anti-Asian hate - and he’s used it as an opportunity for personal and professional growth to get more narratives of the often under-celebrated Asian community in America out into the world.   Have questions, comments, or concerns?  Email us at hello@dearwhitewomen.com What to listen for: How Asian cultural norms might shape how vocal Asian people in America might be What Jerry thinks about the model minority myth, and how it places an artificial divide between Asians in America and other minoritized communities The hypocrisy of people who stand against immigrants, when most of us are descendants of immigrants - even if you look White How making assumptions about your Asian colleagues may be harming them About Jerry:  Jerry Won is a storyteller, brand builder, and community leader. He is the Founder & CEO of Just Like Media, an Asian American storytelling company whose podcast brands include Dear Asian Americans, recently featured as the top podcast for APAHM by Apple, and currently working with McDonald’s on the #WeAreAPA campaign. He is a keynote speaker and workshop facilitator and has worked with organizations such as Johnson & Johnson, LEK Consulting, Horizon Media, and Pepsi. Jerry speaks on a variety of topics including authentic storytelling and the Asian American experience in the workplace. Prior, he was a Senior Strategy Consultant at Accenture and sales leader at start-ups and F500 companies. Jerry has a BS from USC Marshall and an MBA from Michigan Ross, where he served as President of the Student Government Association. He has served in board and leadership roles of alumni organizations and community non-profits.  Along with his wife Kyung and his two children, Jerry lives in Southern California. Child Psychologist and Professor Sunny Bai joins us to share her perspectives and tips for raising happy and confident Korean American adolescent children. Fun fact: Sunny is Jerry's sister in law!Sunhye "Sunny" Bai is an assistant professor of Human Development and Family Studies at the Pennsylvania State University. She received her MPH degree from UC Berkeley in 2010, specializing in Maternal and Child Health, and received her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from UCLA in 2017, where she also completed her pre-doctoral clinical internship and postdoctoral fellowship. Her research broadly focuses on adolescent development in the context of daily family and school life. This work integrates human development, family studies and clinical and health research, and relies heavily on naturalistic measures of youth and family functioning including daily diaries, passive audio/video recordings, and actigraphy. Her research is in three related areas. First, she studies how youths' day-to-day experiences at home and at school impact their mental health. These “day-to-day experiences” encompass ups and downs in emotions, sleep, health behaviors, and most importantly, family interactions. Second, her current research examines how parents adapt their caregiving approaches in the face of adolescent behavioral health concerns. Third, her work examines how modifiable health behaviors shape the course of internalizing problems, such as depression. Together, this research will help to better identify innovative strategies to enhance parent-child interactions and increase family strengths to promote health in adolescents.Connect with Sunny: https://hhd.psu.edu/contact/sunhye-sunny-baiParenting resources: https://www.mustardseedgeneration.org/ https://afsp.org/minority-mental-health-resources https://www.ncfr.org/resources/resource-collections/resources-dismantle-racism-asian-american-community https://www.ncfr.org/resources/resource-collections/immigration-resources // Meet your co-hosts of the Korean American Parenting Podcast!Dr. Jang Cho is a board certified child and adolescent psychiatrist. Korean 4 My Kids founder Sandy joins us to share about her Korean language brand, raising three kids while homeschooling them, and tips for fellow Korean American Parents!About Sandy:Hello! 안녕하세요!I am Sandy, a Korean-American mama passing on the Korean language and heritage to my three third-generation children, ages 2-7.A few years ago, it was challenging for me to find Korean language and cultural resources for my English dominant kids, at least aside from a few apps, television shows, and YouTube videos.  I would scour the internet for ideas and resources, and then excitedly mass email and text my friends.I eventually started Korean4MyKids on Instagram to meet other like-minded families, to record our journey, and to share any resources we find along the way.Welcome!  I look forward to connecting with you!안녕하세요! 미국교포맘 샌디입니다~어릴때 미국으로 이민와서 이제는 아이 셋을 키우는 2세 재미교포이에요.서툴지만 열정적인 이중언어 홈스쿨링과 일상을 기록하기 위해 시작한Korean 4 My Kids 입니다.(Source: Korean4MyKids.com)Connect with Sandy!Web: https://korean4mykids.com/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/ParenthoodTogetherLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jenniferpark1/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jennypkim/// Meet your co-hosts of the Korean American Parenting Podcast!Dr. Jang Cho is a board certified child and adolescent psychiatrist. I might have drawn on your Stuart Weitzman shoes or personalized artwork for you at Cartier.I was born in Seoul, but adopted when I was three months old. Growing up, I didn't have a lot of exposure to Korean culture (or, really any Asian culture for that matter.)In college, I spent nine months in Seoul at EWHA Women's University. I made lifelong friends and travel back to Korea often. My parents came with me on my most recent trip. Being part of their first experience in my birth country (while I was pregnant!) was incredibly special.Exposing my son to Korean was important from the beginning. But, the more I tried to find resources, the more frustrated I became. What little I could find was mostly for native speakers (and usually included an expensive import mark-up.)Where were the books and activities for Korean-Americans, adoptees like me, or families with mixed backgrounds?!(Source: TigerboomCreative.com)Connect with Katie:Web: TigerboomCreative.comPersonal: https://katiecadamatre.com/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/tigerboomcreativeLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/cadamatre///Meet your co-hosts of the Korean American Parenting Podcast!Dr. Jang Cho is a board certified child and adolescent psychiatrist. A classically trained pianist with a B.A. in psychology from Wellesley College, she devoted herself to teaching music to young children. During those years of teaching, Anna discovered that drawing cartoons on yellow stickies helped keep restless children engaged. That's when she decided to expand her canvas from stickies to picture books and to pursue her newfound purpose:"Through picture and word, I want to surprise, inspire and delight children by creating fun and heartwarming stories. I want to plant seeds of love and kindness through living characters who jump off the page and touch the reader with genuine emotions. I want those characters to show kids of all sizes, shapes and colors what it's like to be courageous, resilient and empathetic heroes. And I want to share with readers the magic of friendship in transforming our beliefs, our hearts, and our lives forever."  Anna lives in a quiet part of New York City, where she can see trees and hear birds. Her work studio is full of stickies.
