33 min. Reflection: Making Good and Bad Podcasts Maureen and Pierre discuss their podcast journey. No editing. Cleaning up speech patterns. Sharing resources. Sharing dialogue with a friend. How did this adventure start? Pierre revisits the early beginnings when Maureen met Pierre at Bikram Teacher Training 2015, Khao Lak, Thailand at the 10 min mark. Yoga training was 9 weeks of transcendental hell camp. In this reflection, at different times Maureen and Pierre raise the need for our polarized society to remember conversational arts. Though a bit of a ramble, this pod explains how Learning Conversation was born, reflecting on topics, formats and the courage of pressing a record button and posting - no net trapeze work. Discussing the podcasts strengths and weaknesses, a bright spot is the unrehearsed conversation and spontaneous thinking and speaking which keeps exchanges fresh. Essentially conversation! Check it out folks. Done in love, hope you are enjoying. Closing out as usual: Live to learn and learn to live - Maureen Peace through grace - Pierre

I&`&m Ryan Price in Beijing. Here is the news. The health authority in Beijing is studying the long-term impact of smog on people&`&s health, including the widespread concern that smog could be a cause of lung cancer. The Beijing News reports that the Municipal Commission of Health and Family Planning in Beijing has begun to study the issue. The report said that current studies have confirmed that inhaling smog may lead to some acute diseases in people&`&s respiratory system. Long-term exposure to pollutants could cause chronic inflammation, hypo immunity and allergies. But the exact relationship of smog and lung cancer is not clear at the moment. The commission said it will take a decade or longer to collect data before the researchers can make clear the relationship between smog and people having a certain kind of disease.Based on previous studies on smog, the commission and the Beijing Center for Diseases Control and Prevention have issued a list of protective measures against smog. The measures urge people to stay indoors and wear masks outdoors on smoggy days.Smog has been a frequent issue in many Chinese cities in recent years. This is Special English.China has issued a plan on medical reform targets of the next five years. The plan covers diagnosis and treatment systems, hospital administration, medical security, medical supplies and regulatory system of the sector.A multi-tiered diagnosis and treatment system matching China&`&s conditions should be in place by 2020. The system aims to encourage patients to go to community clinics for initial diagnosis and treatment, instead of directly going to specialized hospitals. The plan also stressed a "streamlined and orderly" medical supply system. You&`&re listening to Special English. I&`&m Ryan Price in Beijing. China&`&s central authority has issued a guideline on mobile Internet service management, calling for more efforts to develop the sector in a healthy manner. The guideline calls for increasing the use of mobile Internet service in sectors including transport, tourism, education and medical service, to better serve the public. It says mobile Internet service could play a big role in poverty relief, as it provides an efficient means to connect these regions with the outside world. The guideline also urges cultivating an orderly environment for the development of mobile Internet service.China will resolutely crack down on criminal activities including instigating overthrowing state power and inciting religious extremism through mobile Internet services. Promoting ethnic separatist ideology and instigating violence and terror will also be targeted. In addition, more efforts will be made to punish those involved in defamation, telecom fraud, infringement and illegal sale of others&`& personal information. It urges preventing and eliminating risks caused by the development of mobile Internet service to ensure security of network data, technology and apps. The guideline also called for more efforts to be made on strengthening intellectual property protection and boosting international exchange and cooperation in the sector. This is Special English.China has established cooperation ties in science and technology with 158 countries and regions in the world.According to the Ministry of Science and Technology, a total of 111 intergovernmental agreements on science and technology cooperation had been signed, and China had taken part in more than 200 intergovernmental organizations devoted to boosting such cooperation.A stable intergovernmental cooperation mechanism, which covers major countries, regions and international organizations, has taken shape, contributing to the improvement of the nation&`&s capability in science and technology. You&`&re listening to Special English. I&`&m Ryan Price in Beijing. Land-space Technology Corporation, a private aerospace company based in Beijing, said it has secured a contract with Gomspace, a Danish company, to launch a series of satellites. The company says this is the first time for a private Chinese company to provide satellite launching services to the international market.According to the contract, Land-space will use its rocket to put Gomspace&`&s satellites into orbit next year.Land-space said his company could not have won recognition from the overseas client without decades of efforts by Chinese workers in the aerospace industry, which has been developing for 60 years. The total value of the global aerospace market could hit 485 billion U.S. dollars by 2020, with the market value in China alone reaching 800 billion yuan, roughly 116 billion U.S. dollars, during the 2016-2020 period.A scientist from the Chinese Academy of Sciences said the aerospace industry matters not only for space exploration, but also for economic and social development; and the civil aerospace industry has great potential and will grow very quickly. This is Special English.Chinese scientists say they have built a facility that can generate the world&`&s brightest extreme ultraviolet free electron laser. The facility in Dalian, a coastal city in northeast China, can generate 140 trillion photons per laser pulse in one picosecond. The Dalian Coherent Light Source facility was jointly built by scientists from Dalian and Shanghai, with a total investment of 140 million yuan, roughly 20 million U.S. dollars. The scientists say the flashes of light will illuminate new aspects of the microscopic world. The light sources are especially useful for sensitive detection of atoms, molecules and clusters.Brightness and pulse duration of the light source are key to such detection. The brighter the light source, the more clearly people can see the small number of atoms or molecules. The scientists say that since many physical, chemical and biological reactions happen on a time scale with a picosecond, people need high-speed "flashlights" to capture these moments to study the process. The technology will play a unique and important role in exploring the unknown material world and promoting technological progress. You&`&re listening to Special English. Now the news continues.Renowned linguist Zhou Youguang has been remembered by Chinese Internet users since he passed away recently at age 111. Zhou is known for creating the pinyin, a system of Latin letters for reading standard Chinese. In 1955, Zhou was an economics professor at Fudan University in Shanghai. He was asked by the central government to join a national committee to develop an accessible alphabetic writing system. It took him and his colleagues three years to work out the system, which was adopted in 1958. Since then, the pinyin system has been used to greatly increase literacy levels across the country. It has also made it easier for foreigners to learn Chinese.Pinyin has also facilitated the use of Chinese characters on computer keyboards and cellphones. When users entered pinyin with a keyboard, they are given choices of relevant Chinese characters. This is Special English.Traveling abroad is becoming more and more popular among the Chinese people, who are also found to have spent more on travel then just shopping. Meanwhile, female tourists outnumbered male.According to one of the leading travel websites in China, bookings increased 34 percent last year compared to the previous year.Chinese tourists are traveling greater distances. A new gibbon species has been discovered in southwest China&`&s Yunnan Province. The new species is characterized by white eyebrows and is found mainly only in Yunnan Province.Their beards are completely black or brown instead of white as seen in other gibbon species. Chinese scientists began their research on the newly found gibbons in 2007, and a joint study by scientists from five other countries confirmed the discovery of the new species. The gibbons inhabit at altitudes of 500 to 2,000 meters. Their total number is no more than 200.Scientists suggest the new species should be categorized as endangered and need special conservation efforts.Gibbons and siamangs are small apes inhabiting southern, eastern and southeastern Asia. Before we start: Have you heard about Snapappen? It’s a kick-ass event that recognizes and features the best snapchatters, and it’s happening in just a few days in London. Even if you can’t go (we can’t), you’ll want to keep up with the fun, activities, and awards at Snaphappen.com. It looks like a great lineup! Getting through immigration/passport control is a necessary evil of travel. But passport control at the Kuala Lumpur airport is a special breed of evil of the unnecessary kind. Disaffected agents. Inadequate staffing. An inability to forecast needs from dozens of planes soon to arrive. Couple that with their half-assed usage of metal posts and nylon strips to funnel the crowd and you’re in for a long, frustrating experience that almost makes you want to burn your passport in protest. But that won’t help, because you’d be stuck in the worst immigration area on the planet. Forever. Left to our own devices, humans will impose a messy, organic layer of organization on top of chaos, making what should be a straight and ordered line into strange mobius strips or FSM inspired large-scale artwork. Ants, we are not. Evo’s really not for order, but he is one for trying to impose his will on an already confused system. Skewed sense of justice, anyone? And when you throw a belligerent French person in the mix, his odd sense of justice gets super-charged. Not that he has anything against French people in general. Just this one french person who embodied all aspects of an over privileged white person who’s forgotten that her country’s colonial era is mostly over. She certainly didn’t expect running into an asshole American not concerned with making a scene in the middle of immigration. Good news: He didn’t get arrested. Surprising news: It seems we’ve already met our new neighbor? Responsibility is a bitch. If that story doesn’t make that ring home, take the case of (https://www.facebook.com/imnickrobertson) . Like many, Nick ran away from responsibility in his early 20s, spending three months traveling SE Asia. When he surprisingly didn’t die or lose an appendage doing what young, risk-taking backpackers do in the jungle, he thought he’d spend a year in Australia, a country well known to act downright hostile toward humans. What’s the worst that could happen to a young Brit in Melbourne? You’ll have to ask his face about that. Did we mention that our friends at TravelSmith stepped up and sponsored us for an entire year? They are a perfect fit for us, and we wear their clothes and use their gear every single day. If you haven’t yet checked them out, do so. TravelSmith.com has what you need for any travel, near or far. Speaking of keeping the show going: The money we get from our patrons every month is a huge help! We’ve just filled out the postcards from Khao Lak, but we discovered we have lots of extras! So if you sign up to get a postcard from us this month right now, we’ll send you a bonus card. Do it today, please? Music for our show is graciously provided by the fantastic band Velella Velella. They make killer tunes, and you should buy all of their stuff. It’s fabulous! Before we get started, I need to tell you about PodcastLaunch.pro. It’s not just some new podcasting service. It’s my new podcasting service. After a few months trying out my hand as a podcast consultant, I think I’m onto something. Let me know if I can help you. Or if you know someone who needs help. It’s not hard to find good food in Thailand. But to find the really great places, you need to eat with a local. Hands down the best way to do this is with a food tour by Taste of Thailand. We recently took their Tuk Tuk Urban Odyssey food tour, where we were shuttled around in style to the best hidden away places we never knew existed. The next time you come to town, you simply must book a tour with Taste of Thailand. And I’m not just saying that because they’ve comped us a couple of trips thus far. It’s great, and now we’ve got a bunch of new places to try right near our new place in Bangkok! And you’ll want a full belly to get through our featured story today. S. Bedford -- Sue, to her friends -- is our kind of people. Cavalier attitude? Check. Throw caution to the wind and just travel the world? Check. Funny? Check. And best of all: Sue knows how to tell a damned funny story. Which is good, because plenty of funny things happened to her when she was traipsing around the world. She’s collected the best of them -- and they are seriously funny -- in her book It's Only the Himalayas: And Other Tales of Miscalculation from an Overconfident Backpacker. No, I’m not one to recommend travel memoirs, but in this case, I’ll make an exception. I read the whole thing in two days. It’s awesome. I’m looking forward to the second edition, because there are lots of stories that didn’t make it in the book. Like this one, where she was pressed into tattooing some random stranger’s face in Central America. I mean, if it’s going to happen somewhere… I guess it might as well be Guatamala? Oh, and did I mention that Sue is not a tattoo artist? Yeah. That sorta makes the story. Sheila’s super stoked about the new roller bag she received from TravelSmith. There are logistics why she can’t carry a backpack bag like I do, but I think I have her hooked on the idea of never checking a bag again. Thanks again, TravelSmith. You’re an awesome sponsor. You’ve still got a few hours to sign up to get a postcard from our recent trip to Khao Lak. But even if you miss it: no worries. I think the next batch is coming from the Philippines. Want one? Get signed get signed up as a Patron of ours (it’s super cheap!) and I’ll send you one every single month! Music for our show is graciously provided by the fantastic band Velella Velella. It’s not a matter of if but when you get in trouble for bending rules and exploiting loopholes. And that finally happened to me in Thailand. No, I didn’t get a speeding ticket or nabbed on a visa overstay. It’s that these people are a bit of a stickler when it comes to paperwork, and my shortcuts caught up to us on Sheila’s latest job change. While it’s not deportation-worthy, it’s serious enough that I had to make a run back up to the Department of Consular Affairs to get things straightened out. Bureaucrats are bad enough to deal with on a good day. But when you’ve been caught not playing by the rules? They let you live a slice of personal hell. So much that I decided to re-tell my experience with an audio play in three acts. Act One: Mrs. Doubtful You’ll Get The Translator Act Two: Choose Your Own Information Desk Adventure Act Three: Baelzebub Needs You To Come In On Saturday Aside from poetic licenses taken on accents and dialog, this play is a farcical but all-too-accurate representation of my day at The Department of Consular Affairs in Bangkok. Maybe next time I’ll just follow the rules? (No… probably not.) We received our latest care package from TravelSmith. Mostly clothes for Sheila and a new carryon bag, so there’s no fashion show. But they remain a great place to get your gear and clothes for your next travel adventure, even if it’s not quite as globe-hopping as ours. Next month’s postcards were acquired in Khao Lak, Thailand last month. And the good news is that we have extra, so if you get signed up as a Patron of ours (it’s super cheap!) you’ll get one, too. In case you missed the news, I’m going to be the opening keynote keynote speaker for TBEX Asia 2016! The conference takes place on October 15th and 16th in Manilla, Philippines. If you know someone who should attend, please pass along the link to registration. And if you’re going, please let me know! You’ll notice there isn’t a guest on the show again. We’re OK with that. Like I said last time, we’re not holding stories hostage until we get a guest lined up. In fact, my goal is to give you more than a single episode a week, because we’ve got a backload of stories. And why the hell shouldn’t we share them with you, right? Speaking of that…You may recall from the flurry of photos, silly Snapchats and other various missives that we took a week long vacation in early July to lovely Khao Lak, Thailand. We, along with our friends Eric and Amber from With Husband In Tow, were invited down by the J.W. Marriott Khao Lak to sample their hospitality, accommodations, and check out the surrounding area. Well… we did a lot of the first two. It’s the perfect property for when the rain keeps you from doing too much exploring. There’s a bar around every corner (not really, but it sure felt that way). Which is good if you want a drink but bad if you think tequila makes for a good sunscreen. But that didn’t stop us from taking full advantage of the 3 km pool that winds its way through the property. At one point, the pool features a waterslide, where Sheila traumatized small children. No, not because she was playing the part of the mean big kid-- she’s a teacher, after all. I’m talking about the poor combination of high-speed and water friction which might have led to a wardrobe malfunction which might haunt the kids later in life. I’m not saying that’s what happened. Though I am apparently typing it.But that’s not the story we’re telling on the show. Today’s story is the tale of my 8 km mountain bike trek to the Rainbow waterfall. Our gracious host, Hanna, opted to keep me company for the journey. Well, that was the theory anyhow. She’s apparently allergic to torrential rainfall and turned back not 300 meters into the ride. And oy vey did it rain! Which happens in the raining season. Which is why I had a dry bag. Which the others on the tour didn’t. Which meant there was one phone that didn’t get ruined. Mine. I don’t want to spoil anything, but man… was that a wet, wild day. In hindsight, I should have joined the other three at the pool for drinks. Again. Thanks as always to our fantastic sponsor, TravelSmith. I know know how fast “quick-dry” clothing dries, as I was fully decked out in TravelSmith-provided clothes for that swim -- er... ride -- up to the waterfall. Hooray for no wet, soggy clothes in my luggage! And for those who listen every episode but still haven’t signed up to get postcards from us… what the heck, people? Every month, you’ll get a postcard from us from abroad. It’s simple. And cheap. So seriously sign up today! The support of our patrons really goes a long way in helping us keep pumping out content from abroad! Music for our show is graciously provided by the fantastic band Velella Velella.
