Dave Kellett discusses the three phases of art. First, you're just trying to make it work. Then, you try to make it right. And after you've mastered those, you can begin to make it fast.On today's show:Make it work, make it right, make it fastUPDATE: Danielle Corsetto's lettering tipsUPDATE: Substack Notes adviceUPDATE: KDP and Global ComixSummaryThe hosts discuss the stages of artistic development in comics, starting with making it work, then making it right, and finally making it fast. They compare this progression to the process of building a shelf, where you start by making it functional and then refine it over time. They estimate that it takes about 3-5 years to make it work, 10-15 years to make it right, and even longer to make it fast. They emphasize the importance of putting in the time and effort to reach each stage of development. In this part of the conversation, Brad and Dave discuss the different stages of their careers in comics and how they have evolved over time. They talk about the importance of making it right before making it fast and how their skills and speed have improved over the years. They also discuss the idea of never being as good as their heroes but striving to be the best version of themselves.Additionally, they share a lettering tip from Danielle Corsetto and discuss the potential of Substack. Brad and Dave discuss their experiences with Substack and Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) in this conversation. Brad shares his positive experience with Substack, highlighting its features and the potential for audience growth. They also discuss the drawbacks of KDP, including discoverability issues and the difficulty of dealing with Amazon. Brad recommends Global Comix as an alternative platform for building an audience. The conversation concludes with a discussion of upcoming projects and the excitement for the future.TakeawaysThe process of artistic development in comics involves three stages: making it work, making it right, and making it fast.Making it work is about creating a functional comic while making it right involves refining the details and improving the quality.Progressing through each stage takes time and effort, with estimates of 3-5 years to make it work, 10-15 years to make it right, and even longer to make it fast.Putting in the work and consistently creating comics is essential for growth and improvement as an artist. In this episode, Julie Lokun discusses the world of publishing and provides insights into different publishing options available to authors. She starts by emphasizing the importance of books as marketing tools for entrepreneurs and businesspeople like herself. Julie mentions her own publishing company, The Media Caster's Publishing House, and highlights the team behind it.She distinguishes between traditional publishing, hybrid publishing, and vanity press. Traditional publishing involves authors submitting manuscripts to literary agents or publishing houses, with publishers carefully selecting manuscripts with market potential. Julie advises authors to be cautious when approaching publishing agents, as legitimate agents should not charge upfront fees. If accepted by a traditional publisher, authors receive a contract covering various aspects such as editing, cover design, marketing, and distribution. Julie emphasizes the need to have someone review the contract and mentions that publishers are not responsible for author branding or publicity.Hybrid publishing combines elements of traditional and self-publishing. While these publishers may require a financial contribution from authors for book development, cover design, or editing, authors retain a higher percentage of royalties compared to traditional publishing. Professional services such as editing, cover design, and distribution are provided by the publisher.Self-publishing, the third option discussed, allows authors to have full control over the publishing process. Authors can upload their books to platforms like Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP), IngramSpark, or Barnes & Noble. However, Julie strongly recommends investing in professional editing to ensure the book represents the author's brand effectively.Julie raises concerns about vanity press scams in the publishing industry. Vanity presses charge authors exorbitant fees for subpar or unnecessary services and often hold authors' books hostage. She advises authors to do thorough research, check with the Better Business Bureau, and read reviews before committing to any publishing company. Red flags to watch out for include demands for substantial upfront fees without clear service outlines, hybrid publishers requiring authors to pay for all publishing costs, and promises of instant success in exchange for hefty fees. Julie urges authors to protect their creative work and prioritize their integrity. She concludes by encouraging aspiring authors to believe in the power of their words and their potential as successful authors. At the time self-publishing was (unkindly) referred to as “vanity publishing”. As if it was not valid. That myth lingers today. In 2018 I published my first book. The issue was that writing a book is a huge undertaking. In fact, it's too big to be a goal. It's a dream. Part of the enormity of the problem was that it was completely new territory. I had no guidance. I had to “go-it-alone”. Each step was painful. The fourth book I published, “Influence: Creation of Credibility” was to capture my process and make it available to other entrepreneurs. I break down the process into manageable steps to make it attainable for all coaches and consultants. Being a published author has led to being a guest on other podcasts, paid speaking gigs, and signing new clients. We talk about:Publishing a book to grow your email list,How your course increases your know/like/trust quotient, The secrets of accountabilityInspiring stories of coaches and consultants just like youHow to download my outlines for the book, course, and 12-week timeline. In this episode: There are several key elements to consider when designing your book cover for a digital book sold on Amazon:Visibility: The cover should be easily visible and legible at small sizes, as it will often be displayed as a thumbnail on Amazon's website.Branding: The cover should be consistent with your brand and style.Contrast: The cover should have a high contrast design, with clear and distinct text and images, to make it stand out among other book covers.Relevance: The cover should be relevant to the book's content and genre, as it will help attract the right audience for the book.Text: The book title, your name and subtitle should be prominently displayed and easy to read.Images: Your cover should have an image that is relevant to the content and be eye-catching and visually interesting.Format: The cover should be the correct size and format for Amazon's digital book platform. Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) will provide the specifications you need to either design the cover yourself, or have an artist do it for you.Mobile: The cover should look good on mobile devices as well as desktop, as many people will be browsing and buying books on their smartphones.Reviews: Once you get reviews, you can add them to your cover by updating the cover of your book. You'll want to plan ahead if you want to do this. Design the cover is way that will allow you to add or substitute the reviews for another element.Bestseller: Of course, WHEN your book becomes a bestseller, you can include a bestseller badge or label on the cover.

Today's guest started in tech and became a multi-millionaire at the age of 33 when she sold her company. Then she transitioned into the fashion industry when she put Denver on the fashion map. Karmen Berentsen is the Owner of A Line Boutique and the author of Learning to Fly. Karmen shared the story of how she created her company, why Amazon is great for selling your self-published book, and what writing a book actually entails. Takeaways:Clothes are powerful. The clothes you wear send a message to other people and yourself. When you look great, you also feel great. Your customers have a lot of people who need a lot from them. You need to be there to take care of them, bring a little joy to their day, and help them accomplish their goals. When your company is making a real impact on the community, you will get so much energy from that, your customers will want to come back, and growing your business will be so much easier. If you're writing a book, don't worry about making the first draft perfect. If the story is flowing out of you, don't stop that flow to try an edit, let it all out first and then go back through. For selling books on Amazon, sellers don't go through Seller Central, they go through Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP). Amazon will print your book as orders come in.When listing your book on Amazon through KDP, you are initially only allowed to select three categories for your book. However, if you call them, you can get listed in four to five additional categories. To have Amazon's #1 Seller badge for your book, you need to have sold the most books in 24 hours. Doing that takes a lot of planning and preparation to get people interested and ready to buy the book during the specific window that you are trying to hit. Quote of the Show:“We are helping women daily feel alive” - Karmen BerentsenLinks:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/karmen-berentsen-6a87818/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/karmenberentsen/?hl=en Company website: https://www.aline-online.com/ Personal website: https://www.karmenberentsen.com/ Learning To Fly: https://www.amazon.com/Learning-Fly-Memoir-Karmen-Berentsen/dp/1735235008/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_pl_foot_top?ie=UTF8 Shout Outs:Bird by Bird by Anne LamottWays to Tune In:Apple Podcast (Leave a Review)iHeart RadioPodchaser (Leave a Review)Amazon MusicSpotifyGoogle PodcastYouTubeAmazon Legends is sponsored by Argometrix, the authority on, and leading supplier of, competitive intelligence for online retail. **Literatur:** - Manfred Gerner (2001): Land ohne Friedhöfe Tibet, Friedhofskultur, Stuttgart: Hohenheim Verlag. - Norbert Fischer (1996): Vom Gottesacker zum Krematorium. If you've been utilizing Amazon's Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) platform for low content or no content publishing needs, then I have an opportunity that's worth checking out. In today's episode, I (Elke) discuss the opportunity to sell these types of products on Zazzle and why it could be an even more lucrative option for you than KDP. There are several reasons that the KDP Amazon Publishing model may not be the best avenue for you to pursue, and I'm here to fill you in on those details as well as what may make Zazzle a better fit. The Zazzle platform has so much going for it, and I want you to know your options for selling not only journals but other items with your designs on them. Here are the topics I expand upon in the episode: What is KDP Amazon Publishing? The Opportunity to Make Sales on Zazzle It's my philosophy that you should get the most out of your time, maximum profitability from the least amount of time spent. Although the cash grab factor on KDP Amazon Publishing is high, it's not a sustainable business model to generate passive income over the long term. On the other hand, Zazzle can make you a steady, passive income over time if you start your shop correctly. The U.S. has thousands of libraries, so if an independent publisher can get their books carried in the library market, it can be great exposure for their books and a lucrative endeavor. But, how does an indie publisher get libraries to carry their books? On this episode of “Inside Independent Publishing (with IBPA),” we invited Founder and Former CEO at BiblioLabs and Senior Manager of the BiblioLabs Division at LYRASIS Mitchell Davis to share tips for how independent publishers and author publishers can get their books into libraries!PARTICIPANTSMitchell Davis is a digital publishing and media entrepreneur with over twenty five years experience in the book publishing industry. He was the founder in 2000 of BookSurge, an indie publishing and print-on-demand technology platform which successfully exited in an acquisition to Amazon.com in 2005. BookSurge later became CreateSpace and Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP). After spending two years in senior management at Amazon he founded BiblioLabs which successfully exited in a merger with the global library nonprofit LYRASIS in 2021. So you want to self publish but don't know how? Well, you are just one big lucky ducky today. Tim Lewis did too, and he re-created himself to figure it out! He is the founder of Stoneham Press Ltd, a London-based company formed to publish books and provide services and tools to self-published authors to allow them to publish, market and manage their publications more successfully. Nothing is every easy, and tragedy happens everyday when it's least expected, creating gigantic roadblocks for big visions, dreams, goals and lifestyles. In this episode, Tim shares his journey through life and his experience of living through the tragedy of losing his wife.
