The Country Music Dads dive headlong into the world of children's literature, pop culture and its intersection with country music. We discuss the viral video of Ludacris' incredible rapping of the book Llama Llama Red Pajama, discuss our favorite kids' books, which ones would make incredible country music songs and who should cut them. Show Notes: 2:22: The Kids Books We Love and Love to Hate: Dave and Donnie discuss the nighttime classics and some modern-day page turners for kids (and those reading them to kids). And what would a podcast episode be without some conflict -- so we jumped on a few we wish would just fall behind the bookshelf. 21:27: Books That Sound Like Country Songs: Before diving into who should sing our kids' book songs, the Country Music Dads explore the fairly significant crossover between country music songwriting and children's book writing -- and some of those people who did both. Namely, Shel Silverstein. 38:34: Who Should Sing These Kids' Book Country Songs? From Colter Wall to Miranda Lambert, the Country Music Dads consider the best artists to bring these books to life. 46:57: Dad Life Sound Check: This recurring segment is an opportunity for Dave and Donnie to discuss a song that is hitting home in recent days. For Dave, "Buy Me a Boat" by Chris Janson had been resonating in his house, while Lasers Lasers Birmingham's "Shorter Letter" was touching a chord for Donnie.52:22: Change My Mind: Donnie challenges Dave to think differently about the glories of shopping at Costco -- from the sea of beautiful TVs, to rows of top-shelf bulk-size booze to Costco staples, like rotisserie chicken, availability of eggs and the $1.50 hot dog and soda. The Thore family heads to Kentucky to hang out with the normal side of the family. Whitney makes out with a deer, bails on axe throwing once she realizes she isn't good at it, and tries to seduce Kenny over some tongue action with candy. Sponsored by www.betterhelp.com/TheBarnThe St. Lunatics are a hip-hop group hailing from St. Louis, Missouri, that gained prominence in the early 2000s. They are best known for their association with the multi-platinum rapper Nelly, who was a founding member of the group. Comprising of Nelly, Ali, Murphy Lee, Kyjuan, and City Spud, the St. Lunatics showcased a unique and energetic style that represented the spirit of their hometown. The group's journey began in the late 1990s when they started performing together, captivating local audiences with their distinctive blend of Midwestern rap and Southern influences. Their chemistry and camaraderie were evident, as they effortlessly complemented each other's styles, creating a sound that resonated with fans and critics alike. In 2000, the St. Lunatics released their debut album, "Free City," which showcased their raw talent and garnered significant attention. The album featured chart-topping hits like "Midwest Swing" and "Batter Up," further solidifying their place in the hip-hop scene. Additionally, Nelly's solo success with his album "Country Grammar" further boosted the group's recognition, leading to widespread acclaim for their Midwest hip-hop movement. However, despite the initial success, the St. Lunatics faced challenges that hindered their collective growth. City Spud's incarceration for an unfortunate incident caused a setback for the group, and they struggled to maintain their momentum. Despite these setbacks, they continued to collaborate and contribute to Nelly's subsequent projects.Over the years, the members pursued their individual careers, with Nelly achieving immense commercial success as a solo artist, earning numerous awards and accolades. Murphy Lee and Ali also released solo albums that garnered moderate success. Nonetheless, the St. Lunatics remained a symbol of St. Louis' vibrant hip-hop culture and served as an influential force for aspiring artists in the region. In conclusion, the St. Lunatics left an indelible mark on the hip-hop scene, especially for their contribution to the Midwest hip-hop movement. Their unique style, combined with the success of Nelly's solo career, solidified their place in music history. While the group may not have reached the same heights collectively, their impact on the culture and the inspiration they provided to fellow St. Louis artists cannot be overlooked. The St. Lunatics will always be remembered as one of the pioneering groups that put St. Louis on the hip-hop map.Country Grammar https://amzn.to/44zBOJTFree City https://amzn.to/44KQtSsMoney Talks https://amzn.to/3Y2dG06T-shirt https://amzn.to/3Yg02qtNellyville https://amzn.to/44Q9UJmChingy https://righthurr.com/Chingy https://www.instagram.com/chingyJackpot https://amzn.to/3BaBMfyRight Thurr https://amzn.to/3zpH1XuHoodstar https://amzn.to/3IVQ1XGRight Thurr Live Session https://amzn.to/3OGIltLHolidae Inn https://amzn.to/3czqasuThe Barn https://linktr.ee/TheBarnPodTwitter: @TheBarnPodcastInstagram: @t.h.e.b.a.r.nAll equipment used in the making of this video:Shure Sm7b https://amzn.to/3uAMzMAShure Sm58 https://amzn.to/3xlAj4pBoom Arm Desktop Mic Stand https://amzn.to/3rlZtvGMixcast 4 Audio Mixer https://amzn.to/3uD3KgzOneOdio Headphones https://amzn.to/3rK9cwnPig Hog Headphone Extension https://amzn.to/3JxvwiNNow broadcasting live from the Leadbelt in Southeast Missouri, The Barn, in conjunction with The Wellness Investors, brings you such entertainment as The Chris Sabo Power Hour, Vulgar Display of Podcast, Wack's World, Struggle City, Girl Dad, Knuckleball Prime Time, Arch City Music Podcast, and Birds & Swords. “You gotta remember, I wasn't really shit until about a year-and-a-half ago,” Bartees Strange reminds the crowd at Nashville's Basement East just before performing his song, “Hennessy.” “I was just in my basement playing guitar. And my wife was like, ‘Do the dishes ... Do something other than play guitar.' Now all I do is play guitar again [laughs].”Strange (born Bartees Leon Cox, Jr.), is a sponge and synthesis of everywhere he's been and everything he's seen or heard. Born in England and raised in Tulsa, Oklahoma, his experience performing with Brooklyn-based post-hardcore outfit Stay Inside and a later move to Washington D.C. have all contributed to his singular cosmic sound. He notes during the Rundown that, as an adolescent, his guitar heroes were Thomas Erak of the Fall of Troy and Omar Rodríguez-López of At the Drive-In and the Mars Volta. But in the next sentence, he confesses his love for Nelly.“I always thought people aren't really honest all the time with what they're listening to,” asserts Strange. “I think a lot of people like a lot of things. I grew up in a pretty country town, and everyone would say they just like country music. But I was like, ‘You like the Nelly record, dog. You like Get Rich or Die Tryin', man, and you also like LeAnn Rimes and Toby Keith songs, and Brad Paisley's guitar playing. But you also jam B2K and pop songs, too.' I've never been afraid or ashamed of what I like, so it all goes into my own music.”What he's been saying through 2020's Live Forever and 2022's Farm to Table has been connecting with fans and critics alike. The magnetism is Strange's smooth synergy. This allows him to touchpoint influences from albums like Nelly's Country Grammar, At the Drive-In's Relationship of Command, the National's Boxer, and Phoebe Bridger's Punisher into one harmonious, original package that has landed him on dozens of year-end lists and earned him an 83/100 rating from Metacritic for both of his full-length releases. [Editor's Note: The Metacritic website uses their proprietary Metascore to distill the opinions of the most respected critics' writing online and in print to a single number.]Finishing his earlier thought to the Nashville crowd, he summarized: “‘Hennessy' is a song I wrote when I was a kid, and growing up I thought there was all these weird stereotypes I had to get over to become who I am … [The hook of the song is meant] to kind of say, I know there's all these expectations of what a black person does … but I just want you to see me for who I am and for what I'm trying to say.”He might not have been “shit” 18 months ago, but he's certainly on his way to becoming the something of the sort in the coming years. We'll be here listening and appreciating.Ahead of Strange's final 2022 tour date supporting Farm to Table, Bartees and his guitar-playing compatriots welcomed PG's Chris Kies onstage at Nashville's Basement East to talk shop. During the interview, the trio explained how their “guitar wars” create a compatibly melodic arms race and structure their cohesive sound. We get introduced to a collection of oddball axes and go through their collective...

Welcome to the premiere of season three of Hip Hop History by Drew Curry, this week we are getting into a legend from the midwest. The one and only Nelly out of St. Louis, Missouri. The reason I am confident in the spelling of Missouri because of the line M-I-crooked letter-crooked letter-O-U-R-I no one could do it better. Nelly came in the game on fire with Country Grammar and his follow up Nellyville made him one of the best selling hip hop artist of all time. Nelly has many businesses outside of music and he has a burgeoning acting career. Thank you Nelly for the classic albums and for everything you have done for hip hop. Check out this episode of hip hop history and please tell a friend to tell a friend. Thank you for listening to this episode and please leave a review where possible. Thank you and have a great day. Phil, Jake and Jason rank radio edits (of songs), and vinyl records (which usually contain songs) on the List of Every Damn Thing. If you have something to add to the list, email it to list@everydamnthing.net (or get at us on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook).SHOW NOTES: Jason sings the praises of Kool-Aid pickles in the episode. Phil & Jake are sure Kool-Aid pickles are good but they look like sea slugs. Phil was right that Vincent Price's spoken-word part on Michael Jackson's “Thriller” didn't appear on the song's 7” single. It did appear in the music video, though. Phil talks about a song by Pink that refers to satellite radio. He had the artist wrong; it was the Black Eyed Peas' "Boom Boom Pow". Radio stations censored the word "satellite" and we think it was just them flexing. There are three versions of “I Got 5 On It” by Luniz: the original one with explicit lyrics, the clean radio edit, and the Bay Area Ballas Remix. "Get Low" by Lil Jon& The East Side Boyz got heavy radio play using an edit that had a lot of profanity taken out, but they got to say "skeet" (which is slang for ejaculation) many times. Lil' Jon also apparently ran a label called Skeet Skeet Records. Phil mentions that the radio edit of “Country Grammar” by Nelly really helped Nelly crossover cause it was built on a children's singalong although the song was talking about a drive-by shooting with an Armsel Striker "Street Sweeper" which is an automatic shotgun. In the episode, Phil doesn't know the full name of the weapon but he had the right idea. Phil talks about the end of the first act of Scarface which is his favorite part of the movie. We talk about “Money For Nothing” by Dire Straits. The guy from Dire Straits also wrote “Private Dancer” by Tina Turner. Can you play a gold record? Most gold or platinum records are colored vinyl and you can play them but, like Phil speculates, it's usually a random record that's been painted so if you buy Bruce Springsteen's Human Touch platinum record and play it, it might be Legs by ZZ Top. Taylor Swift's album Evermore is the one Jake talks about but can't remember the name. "Ms. Jackson," "So Fresh, So Clean," "B.O.B." You know Stankonia. There's a great chance you started humming one of those songs upon reading the title. There's also a great chance you start humming Nelly's "Country Grammar" and/or Ludacris' "Southern Hospitality" when I write those. What binds all of those together? The year 2000, an absolute monster year for hip-hop crossover hits and artists. Eminem has the monolith of the year, but we'll get to him in a later episode. For know Matt and Tim talk the goodness, sensuality, and strangeness of Stankonia, before considering Nelly's Country Grammar and Ludacris' Back for the First Time as both monuments to 2000 and sneaky influential albums on their own. Let's remember some tunes.

Nelly, "Country Grammar." We're going down, down, baby, St. Louis here we come.
Kathleen opens the show showing off her new “twisty Bic candle lighter”, and a recently acquired Cher prayer candle. She ranks her cardboard friends in the pub by their outspoken nature, referring to the group as “queens” and citing Cher as the mouthiness and Dolly as the least mouthy by nature.Kathleen reads a Dolly Parton quote involving life and horses. Kathleen moves on to tell a story about her childhood pet pony Princess. “DRINKY THE CLOWN” WORLD: Kathleen has found a new beer to switch up to from her usual Mich Ultra and Bud Light, which she reveals to be Miller 64. She’s excited about Anheuser Busch’s announcement that they are releasing a new Nelly branded Budweiser to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the release of his single “Country Grammar,” since Kathleen is a big fan of Nelly’s music (and Budweiser.) She pours her beer into an Ole Smoky Moonshine glass, and describes all of the fun she’s had when visiting their tasting room in Gatlinburg, TN. SUPER TURTLES: Kathleen does a quick review of the recent Kentucky gubernatorial debate between Mitch McConnell and Amy McGrath, not for political purposes but because she’s temporarily obsessed with McConnell’s chortle laugh during one of the exchanges between the candidates. As McAfee was also an original supporter of cryptocurrency, Kathleen also gives listeners on her own Bitcoin investment strategy. PART-TIME CASINOS: With reduced business as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, Encore Casino at Wynn in Vegas has announced that it will only operate on a four-night schedule until demand increases. Kathleen reviews her experiences gambling at Encore, and says that she prefers to be at the Mirage. “GAS STATION or ROAD” FOOD: In maintaining her search for best not-so-nutritious fast food, Kathleen shares with listeners her review of a recent fried bologna sandwich that she had at a Georgia gas station, and provides commentary on the release of SeaPak’s Budweiser Fried Shrimp. She then critiques Jimmy Dean Biscuit Roll Ups, as shared with her by her friend and comedian Kelly MacFarland, and announces that the Girl Scouts have announced that they will release a new French Toast flavored cookie in 2021. MOUNTAIN LION ATTACK: Kathleen discusses the recent video that went viral on social media this week of a mountain lion stalking a Utah runner, and compares it to her sister’s feral cat. She moves on to advise listeners the steps to take to survive a mountain lion attack.THE INTERNET’S EXPERIENCE WITH STERIODS: With numerous Americans currently taking steroids to treat the effects of COVID (including the President,) Kathleen took to Twitter to describe her own experience taking steroids to treat an illness, and also reads social media responses from others who discuss their own reactions to the drugs.YOUTUBE QUANON BAN: In continuing with her Episode 10 topic digging into the QAnon movement, Kathleen advises listeners that YouTube has followed Facebook’s lead and is banning QAnon conspiracy videos from its platform. LAX JET PACK CASE: Kathleen walks listeners through the stories being shared by pilots at LAX regarding sightings of a person in a jet pack flying at an altitude of 6,000 feet, as well as the media coverage attempting to solve the mystery. Twenty years ago, a record release on June 27 changed the course of St. Louis’ presence in the hip-hop world and overall cultural identity. Cornell Haynes Jr., a.k.a. Nelly, debuted his first solo album, “Country Grammar,” bringing national attention to St. Louis’ distinct accent and steez. The album rose to No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and is in a rare class of hip-hop albums to be awarded a diamond certification, having sold more than 10 million copies. Host Sarah Fenske revisits that moment with Vango Jones. Jones is a St. Louis native, and he recently wrote an in-depth piece for the St. Louis American about how “Country Grammar” helped shape St. Louis pride in many aspects, from sports to fashion. Residents also share their fondest memories and what they admire most about Nelly’s success and representation of the region.
Whoa Nelly! Atlanta is burning and for good reason.

Mr. Bacon (@sapbodean and yes that is his real name) and I sat down to talk about our shared experiences as people growing up in the country. If you add up our graduating classes, you get a collective size of about 200 students (guess who had less in their class). But the most interesting thing about the entire conversation is how Bacon has used a lot of what he learned growing up in the country and applied it to corporate america. Those skills have actually helped in thrive in the environment, because both areas are built heavily off respect for one another. #country #barn #horses #texas #alabama #land #gradschool #corporateamericaSupport the show (http://www.patreon.com/6ixstudios)
Today we pay homage to Nelly..... Cornell Iral Haynes Jr. (born November 2, 1974), known professionally as Nelly, is an American rapper, singer, songwriter, entrepreneur, investor, and occasional actor from St. Louis, Missouri. Nelly embarked on his music career with Midwest hip hop group St. Lunatics in 1993 and signed to Universal Records in 1999. Under Universal, Nelly began his solo career in the year 2000, with his debut album Country Grammar, of which the featured title-track and the single "Ride wit Me" were top ten hits. The album debuted at number three on the Billboard 200 and went on to peak at number one. Country Grammar is Nelly's best-selling album to date, selling over 8.4 million copies in the United States.[3] His following album, Nellyville, produced the number-one hits "Hot in Herre" and "Dilemma" (featuring Kelly Rowland). Other singles included "Work It" (featuring Justin Timberlake), "Air Force Ones" (featuring Murphy Lee and St. Lunatics), "Pimp Juice" and "#1". With the same-day dual release of Sweat, Suit (2004) and the compilation Sweatsuit (2006), Nelly continued to generate many chart-topping hits. Sweat debuted at number two on the US Billboard 200 chart, selling 342,000 copies in its first week. In the same week of release, Suit debuted at number one, selling around 396,000 copies in its first week on the same chart. Nelly's fifth studio album, Brass Knuckles, was released on September 16, 2008, after several delays. It produced the singles "Party People" (featuring Fergie), "Stepped on My J'z" (featuring Jermaine Dupri and Ciara) and "Body on Me" (featuring Akon and Ashanti). In 2010, Nelly released the album 5.0. The lead single, "Just a Dream", was certified triple platinum in the United States. It included the singles "Move That Body" (featuring T-Pain and Akon) and "Gone" (a sequel to the 2002 single "Dilemma" in collaboration with Kelly Rowland). Nelly won Grammy Awards in 2003 and 2004 and had a supporting role in the 2005 remake film The Longest Yard with Adam Sandler and Chris Rock. He has two clothing lines, Vokal and Apple Bottoms. He has been referred to by Peter Shapiro as "one of the biggest stars of the new millennium",[4] and the RIAA ranks Nelly as the fourth best-selling rap artist in American music history,[5] with 21 million albums sold in the United States. On December 11, 2009, Billboard ranked Nelly the number three Top Artist of the Decade.[6] #29DaysOfBlackHistory 29 Days of History music is mastered and mixed by kidkurtis *Putting People On Game does not own any rights to this music or images* Hit us up or send us a text 214-744-3601! Winning multiple Grammy Awards and music awards for their contributions, Ali along with his childhood friends have racked up quite the reputation. Whether it's Country Grammar, Free City, Heavy Starch or the multitude of other albums and features, Ali has set himself along with Nelly, Murphy Lee, Kyjuan, City Spud and Slo Down as the dominate midwest hip hop group of the early 2000's thru today. First up, Mark being in the music business, he has worked with the group on different projects in the past. From these interactions and personal dealings, Mark realized early that Ali is a force to reckoned with verbally when discussing touchy and somewhat controversial topics...not unlike himself. Ali explains the beginnings of the St. Lunatics as they celebrate their 25th year as a group. Mark wonders if there is any plans for a full line up reunion and Ali expounds on why that is always a potential but not at this moment. Next there are many stories of the hip hop group Mark has heard through the grapevine for years. He decides to serve the stories up and put the questions to rest. Did this happen? Did that happen? Some very juicy and interesting background on the group and how they gained notoriety is spawned from these questions. Maybe you knew, but maybe you didn't. Find out the real scoop on the groups ascent to fame and popularity. The guys on the Q have discussed gangs and 1%'ers in the past. But also 5%'ers were brought up on the show before and there is a lot of lore and background to that belief in the world. Ali being a 5%'er shines light on whats true and not about his beliefs. He also explains what being a 5%'er means and how others can attain the same beliefs in their life. But Ali goes a step further and discusses the ways to apply that lifestyle and belief structure to your everyday life. Finally, Ali wanted to discuss something he's heard Mark talk about before regarding slavery in the USA. Ali goes on to discuss how slavery should be viewed and begins to discuss the reparations he believes are important setting things back in the right order. Do you agree or disagree?
