Today I'm interviewing Juliet Menendez, debut author of the illustrated collection Latinitas: Celebrating 40 Big Dreamers. Juliet is a Guatemalan American author and illustrator living between Guatemala City, Paris, and New York. While working as a bilingual teacher in New York City's public schools, Juliet noted the need for more books that depicted children like the ones in her classrooms. She studied design and illustration in Paris and now spends her days with her water colors and notebook. Latinitas is her first children's book. Today we're talking about finding moments of creativity when you're operating in survival mode, how unexpected projects can be a safe place to hide in the midst of trauma, and why being vulnerable with others is essential to avoiding overwhelm. I was awestruck by the medical journey Juliet's mother went on and how Juliet remained by her side, sleeping for months in her hospital room, while also managing to pitch her debut collection in person. My conversation with her was a great reminder that we are all capable of doing extraordinary things, and that many of us have over these past two years, juggling work and caretaking and our creative endeavours. Finding strength and an ability to adapt we may never have thought possible. It's the perfect conversation to kick off this new season of Author Pep Talks and I know you'll find it just as fortifying as I did. So, without further ado, curl up with a furry companion or find yourself a warm blanket, and enjoy my conversation with Juliet Menendez. Saluete amici, amicae, uosque omnes qui Latinitati hodiernae fauetis. Illud erit Schola Romana e Guiana 10. Reginaldus loquor. Hodie de origine linguae Latinae loquemur. Incipiamus. Cum populi Indo-europaei (i.e. Proto-uillanouiani) Italiam ingressi Latium occupauerunt, suam quoque linguam importauerunt. Lingua Latina, siue sermo Latius, quâ pauci ex regione Latiâ loquebantur, primum cum aliis italicis dialectis uix certabat utputa cum Osca uel Umbrica quae in territoriis uastioribus adhibebantur. Praeterea cum colôni Graeci suâ linguâ in Italia meridionali utebantur tum Etrusci a septentrionibus Romam bello opprimebant. De alphabeto Romani Etruscorum litteras usurpauerunt quas hi sibi a Graecis asciuerant. Litteras quarum nonnullae ad usum linguae Latinae mutatae sunt, dinumeramus uiginti tres: A B C D E F G H I K L M N O P Q R S T V X Y Z De his litteris addam quod: -Forma litterae G exsistit e C atque inuenta est quia lingua Etrusca gutturalibus sonôris carebat. -‎I littera hic uocalem i ut in libris illic consonantem ut in ieiunio exprimit. Quod classice dicamus: Manius me fecit Numerio. Experti etiamnunc dubitant utrum tale uestigium genuînum sit necne. Nunc peruenimus ad finem huius emissionis. Gratias uobis ago.

Illud erit Soliloquium e Guiana. Reginaldus loquor. Hodie plura de Cornelio Nepote dicam. Duos enim locos Ciceroni Nepotique communes tractabimus. Dum uitas a Nepote scriptas lego, mihi notaui plerasque illustrare quales uirtutes qualiaque uitia in democratiâ Atheniensium infuerint. Cuius affinitatis duo argumenta iam praebebo uobis iudicanda. Primo Cornelius Nepos in praefatione libri quem de excellentibus imperatoribus composuit, lectores hortatur ne, ut iam diximus, mores Graecos e consuetudinibus Romanis iudicent. Illum locum recito : « Sed hi erunt fere, qui expertes litterarum Graecarum nihil rectum, nisi quod ipsorum moribus conueniat putabunt ». Quem locum etsi nuper citaui cum de relauismo culturali apud Nepotem uerba feci, tamen hodie iterum usurpare cupio ut illam iuncturam ex eo depromam : « expertes litterarum Graecarum ». Etenim Cicero ipse in suâ Republicâ nobis Scipionem prodidit eundemque suas partes agentem. Equidem profecto suspicor illud « expertes litterarum Graecarum » Cornelii Nepotis huic « expertem Graecarum rerum » Ciceronis respondere, quamuis incertum sit utrum alteri responderit.

Illud erit soliloquium e Guiana ultimum huius anni. Reginaldus loquor. Itaque iure existimare possumus eum documenta Latinitatis classicissimae nobis tradidisse. Sedecim libros composuit de uiris illustribus necnon alia uaria opera. Ex his superfuerunt liber tertius de uiris illustribus, uita Attici, uitaque Catonis. Ferunt stilum Cornelii Nepotis quamuis lingua pura fuerit, insulsum esse. Professores mei in Uniuersitate iterabant Cornelium Nepotem historicum fuisse cui nobis parum fidendum esset quippe cum moribus magis studeret quam rebus gestis. Itaque nonnullos locos magistri plerumque dant discipulis uertendos cum nemo putet Nepotem dignum esse cuius opus totum pellegatur. Nihilominus dum uitas inspicio, mihi notaui nonnulla indicia quibus mihi uideretur nos Nepotem citius iudicasse. Ergo ne uobis molestus sim, tres locos sententia mea mirandos tradam. Primo mentionem facere uelim de uita Hannîbalis. Cuius prudentiam aliasque uirtutes contra Titum Liuium laudat Cornelius Nepos ubique libri. Nonne conspicua in Nepote inest calliditas qua tales imagines in animis nostris suscitaret ? Alio loco idem testimonium amicitiae egregium lectoribus tradit. Sic in uitae Attici capitulo decimo tertio. Etenim dum has lego, aliquid lepidi animaduerti. Idem Graece sine dubio faciet Plutarchus.

By the twelfth century the West could be imagined as a soundscape of Latin plainsong and be given a name: Latinitas. https://www.gresham.ac.uk/lectures-and-events/singers-in-the-making-of-europe The Gregorian chants for the Mass figured prominently in this body of shared material, and were spread by many different methods of colonisation and conquest. This was both internally by the foundation of new houses in abandoned or waste areas and externally by crusade in Spain, eastern Europe and Livonia. The singers of the Latin churches were therefore masters of an art that belongs with other aspects of medieval culture that helped to impel what may be called 'the making of Europe'.The transcript and downloadable versions of the lecture are available from the Gresham College website: https://www.gresham.ac.uk/lectures-and-events/singers-in-the-making-of-europeGresham College has been giving free public lectures since 1597.
