[EN] In this video we will analyze the Latin of Saint Thomas to assess what knowledge of the language he had. Anyone who reads one of St. Thomas Aquinas' writings on philosophy and theology notices that the Latin used by the saint is very simple and without any kind of ornament. Many ended up saying that Saint Thomas was not able to write in good Latin. However, a broader and more attentive look at his works tells us something different.

Today I'm interviewing Juliet Menendez, debut author of the illustrated collection Latinitas: Celebrating 40 Big Dreamers. Juliet is a Guatemalan American author and illustrator living between Guatemala City, Paris, and New York. While working as a bilingual teacher in New York City's public schools, Juliet noted the need for more books that depicted children like the ones in her classrooms. She studied design and illustration in Paris and now spends her days with her water colors and notebook. Latinitas is her first children's book. Today we're talking about finding moments of creativity when you're operating in survival mode, how unexpected projects can be a safe place to hide in the midst of trauma, and why being vulnerable with others is essential to avoiding overwhelm. I was awestruck by the medical journey Juliet's mother went on and how Juliet remained by her side, sleeping for months in her hospital room, while also managing to pitch her debut collection in person. My conversation with her was a great reminder that we are all capable of doing extraordinary things, and that many of us have over these past two years, juggling work and caretaking and our creative endeavours. Finding strength and an ability to adapt we may never have thought possible. Itaque mihi uenit in mentem opus a Cicerone scriptum sub titulo « De re publica » legere quippe cum auctores ambo haud solum aequales et testes discriminum Rei publicae Romanae primo saeculo fuissent sed quoque argumenta similia tractare decreuissent. Satis autem liquet Marcum Tullium Ciceronem Corneliumque Nepotem necessarios fuisse. Namque, ut nuper comperimus, Nepos in uita Attici explicauit Atticum adeo sese pro amicissimo habuisse ut rebus domesticis eius interesset. Praeterea ut ex eadem uita atque epistularum multitudine quas Cicero Attico misit, constat Atticum a pueritiâ cum maximâ Ciceronis intimitate conuersatum esse. Ad haec addere uelim quod in quadam epistulâ quam Attico misit, Ciceronem Nepotis miseruit quod filius eius uehementer aegrotabat. Unde facile conicere possumus Nepotem in utriusque globo uixisse. Nihilominus iam uelim uobis demonstrare Ciceronem Nepotemque non modo sibi quandam amicitiam conciliasse sed etiam affinitatem litterariam inter eos extitisse. Cuius affinitatis duo argumenta iam praebebo uobis iudicanda. Primo Cornelius Nepos in praefatione libri quem de excellentibus imperatoribus composuit, lectores hortatur ne, ut iam diximus, mores Graecos e consuetudinibus Romanis iudicent. Illum locum recito : « Sed hi erunt fere, qui expertes litterarum Graecarum nihil rectum, nisi quod ipsorum moribus conueniat putabunt ». Quem locum etsi nuper citaui cum de relauismo culturali apud Nepotem uerba feci, tamen hodie iterum usurpare cupio ut illam iuncturam ex eo depromam : « expertes litterarum Graecarum ». Etenim Cicero ipse in suâ Republicâ nobis Scipionem prodidit eundemque suas partes agentem. Nam Scipio nullam aliam opinionem exponit nisi Ciceronis ipsius ut illo loco quem iam recitabo : « Peto a uobis ut me sic audiatis : neque ut omnino expertem Graecarum rerum, neque ut eas nostris in hoc praesertim genere anteponentem ». Hoc sumpsi e capitulo tricesimo sexto. Hoc operis, personae, omnes nobilite Romanâ generatae, ad Laelium congrediuntur Ferias Latinas celebratum. Scipio qui propter res domi et militiae gestas aestimatione summâ fruitur, a ceteris sententiam rogatus, consentit ut explicet qualis status rei publicae sibi optimus esse uideatur. Haec operis pars igitur quae argumento ipsi praecedit, in primo libro posita, locum prooemii tenet. Equidem profecto suspicor illud « expertes litterarum Graecarum » Cornelii Nepotis huic « expertem Graecarum rerum » Ciceronis respondere, quamuis incertum sit utrum alteri responderit. Ast siquidem non audeo ex uno loco suspicionem in sententiam informare, tamen aliud nactus sum quod opinionem meam corroboraret. Namque etsi nonnullae uitae Cornelii Nepotis an nos non peruenerunt, tamen eae quas conseruauimus, ita se habent ut prima de Miltiade secunda de Themistocle tractarint. Hunc nominum ordinem nostrâ interest inspicere cui M. Tullius Cicero in Republicâ denuo respondere uidetur. Hic libri primi capitulum quintum sparsim recito : « Hinc enim et illa apud Graecos exempla, Miltiadem uictorem domitoremque Persarum, (…) uitam ex hostium telis seruatam in ciuium uinclis profudisse et Themistoclem patria quam liberasset pulsum (…) in barbariae sinus confugisse. » Nos effugere nequit eundem nominum ordinem a Cicerone adhibitum esse quam apud Cornelium Nepotem. Si ad haec addimus quod apud utrumque non modo de statu rerum publicarum sed etiam de similitudinibus differentiisque inter Graecos et Romanos agitur, equidem hoc magis suspicor uitas Cornelii Ciceronisque Rempublicam aliquatenus ex intimitate utriusque scriptoris materiam argumentaque communia hausisse. Uirtutes huius rei haud difficile comparent e quibus si unum commodum mihi seligendum fuerit, illud praeter omnia potissimum designem, quod, cum linguam Latinam uiua uoce colimus, non solum uoluptate loquendi fruimur, sed etiam gradatim discimus linguam ipsam aliter considerare ac methodo philologica. Quae res sine dubio liquet : si Latino tanquam aliis sermonibus hodiernis utimur, incipimus haud secus scripta Latina legere atque Anglica, Francogallica, eaque composita ceteris linguis quas in scholis didicimus. Hanc uoluptatem primum expertus sum cum in Islandia vixi. Sicut fortasse scitis lingua Islandica hodierna minime differt ab usu medii aeui ut et sagas antiquas et acta diurna legere nobis pariter liceat. Idem nunc experior dum Latine loquor. Praeterea sic depinxint ultimas horas Carthaginiensis cum salutem in Prusiae regno petiuisset. By the twelfth century the West could be imagined as a soundscape of Latin plainsong and be given a name: Latinitas. https://www.gresham.ac.uk/lectures-and-events/singers-in-the-making-of-europe The Gregorian chants for the Mass figured prominently in this body of shared material, and were spread by many different methods of colonisation and conquest. This was both internally by the foundation of new houses in abandoned or waste areas and externally by crusade in Spain, eastern Europe and Livonia.
