Can you really get kicked off an island? Joe shared stories of early band memories with Lij Shaw, recording to a double cassette deck and microphone, capturing great drum, bass, and guitar sounds on a 4 track in a home studio and writing cool lyrics. Get access to FREE mixing mini-course: https://MixMasterBundle.com My guest today is Joe Armin, a drummer, guitarist, and songwriter and leader of the first band I ever got to play with in St Louis a college cover band called Ayatollah Joe And The Hostages. “Joe grew up in Cincinnati, and started playing piano, drums and then guitar as a kid. He started multitracking in his basement in 4th or 5th grade. Joe got addicted to playing in bands and recording one-off tunes. In college during the mid to late 80's at Washington University in St. Louis he played music in a handful of bands, one of his first that started doing paying gigs was a covers and originals 4-piece with yours truly, Elijah Shaw. Joe & Elijah got their first studio experience while taking a recording studio course together at college. Joe's focus quickly became writing originals. By senior year he was in a band, Dirt Cousin with friend David Gendelman, cowriting songs and starting to play dive bars and music clubs throughout the St. Louis area. After graduating then moving back and forth between San Francisco and St. Louis Joe finally settled in San Francisco for good in 1994 where he currently works as an architect, while still playing gigs and recording at home. He started recording with a handful of friends under the name, The Aerosols, self-releasing a self-titled CD in 1999. The music was oftentimes noisy and spacey but pop was lurking in the darkness. It took several years for a band with a steady lineup to take form. A trio version of The Aerosols played live in the San Francisco area and beyond from the mid-2000's until Joe's future wife, Amy Fowler joined in 2010, at first on keyboards, but eventually on second guitar and backing vocals also. This 4-person lineup released an LP in 2014, Fake Mirror, containing angular psych songs which were less shy about embracing melody. Amy started her own 5-piece band, Latitude, in 2014 (with herself on guitar and vocals and with Joe on drums and backing vocals) Latitude has had a couple full-length releases, the latest, Mystic Hotline, coming out in 2020 on Emotional Response records. Meanwhile during all this time The Aerosols have continued to play live and record. They released their third full-length, the slightly more atmospheric LP, Room for Wrong, in late 2021. Over the last 14 years Joe has recorded and mixed all of The Aerosols recordings at his and Amy's home studio, Boring Basement Studios, located in San Francisco. He has also recently provided guest guitar tracks on recordings by James Goode and David Gendelman. PLUS: why the CD sales increase was just a mirage, and the end of the smart speaker era. My guest this week is engineer Lij Shaw, who's the owner of the Toy Box Studio in Nashville and host of the great podcast Recording Studio Rockstars. Lij has also been battling with the Nashville Metro Council since 2015 on behalf of home studio and home business owners in the city to keep their businesses open. The city of Nashville, which ironically has the moniker of “Music City,” had a zoning ordinance on its books claiming that a home studio or business is in violation if a customer comes to the house. In July 2020 Nashville finally made home studios and other home businesses legal, but the win also included a sunset clause that would cause the bill to expire three years later unless they vote to keep the law active in January 2023. In 2017, Lij and other Nashville home business owners filed a lawsuit in an effort to provide the right to work from home, which has now made it all the way to the Tennessee Supreme Court. During the interview we spoke about his legal battle with the city of Nashville, installing his new studio, auditioning the Phantom Focus system, selling his iconic console, and much more. I spoke with Lij from his studio via zoom in Nashville. On the intro I'll take a look at why the CD sales increase was just a mirage, and the end of the smart speaker era. var podscribeEmbedVars = { epId: 82692478, backgroundColor: 'white', font: undefined, fontColor: undefined, speakerFontColor: undefined, height: '600px', showEditButton: false, showSpeakers: true, showTimestamps: true };

GUEST: Lij ShawSign the petition at SaveHomeStudios.comIf you live in Nashville, send an email directly to the city council at balancenashville.org Imagine that it was illegal for you to record anyone except yourself in your home studio. Imagine that you werenât allowed to have students over to your house for lessons. Image that it was illegal to go to the home of the hairstylist down the street to get your hair cut. There actually is a pace where thatâs really happening and believe it or not that place is Nashville. Yes, the Music City isnât being being to kind to music made in home studios these days thanks to a 10 year old ordinance that forbids anyone from operating a business from their homes. Leading the charge to change this law is Lij Shaw, who not only operates a home studio where he makes his living from, but is also the host of the popular Recording Studio Rockstars podcast. Along the way Lij has recorded Grammy Award-winning performers such as John Oates, Jack White, Wilco, Adele, and the Zac Brown Band, and the Grammy-winner for Best Roots album in 2015 was mixed in his Toy Box studio. Lij told me the story of what heâs being going through for the past 5 years battling with the city. var embedVars = { epId: 45079962, backgroundColor: 'white', height: '600px', showSpeakers: true };
Real-time remote audio work IS possible - with surprising quality and flexibility ! In this show I'll describe techniques and strategies to help you mix, master, teach and even record remotely - and even suggest some ways to jam live. Kind of. Amongst other things I'll describe how to: Stream lossless, low-latency audio to any DAW or browser, for up to 40 people Combine this audio stream with multi-user video chat Screenshare in sync for easier collaboration during mixing, mastering and even recording Take control of someone else's screen for teaching or training purposes Use other people's analogue gear in your project “Jam” virtually online - on an iPhone ! Thanks to Ian Stewart and Lij Shaw for help with ideas and testing for this episode. Check out the website for full links and show notes http://themasteringshow.com/episode-71

It’s always a pleasure to have the opportunity to interview someone on the show that I consider a mentor, and our current guest, Lij Shaw, definitely fits the bill. As the host of the highly successful podcast Recording Studio Rockstars, Lij provides his guests with a peek behind the curtain and into the minds of some of the most successful record producers and engineers working today. In addition to Recording Studio Rockstars, Lij owns the Toy Box recording Studio in Nashville, TN., a Grammy certified studio, which now houses one of the most famous MCI consoles from Criteria Studios in Miami, built by hand from it’s founder, Jeep Harned. Here’s a small list of the artists Lij has worked with during his long career: Aimee Mann, Ben Harper, Audley Freed, Blues Traveler, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, Dawes, Citizen Cope, and Band of Horses.
Lij Shaw has recorded artists from Adele to John Oates, and for over a decade has operated a home studio out of his detached garage. The city of Nashville came after him for this, and persisted even after his neighbors signed a petition in his defense. Here's what happened, and what he's doing next.

On today's show I am privileged to interview Dana Zhang a PhD student in computer science at Vanderbilt University right here in Nashville Tennessee. This highly intelligent young woman shares with us the path that brought her to blockchain tech and a bit about where she hopes to make an impact in our world. In the second half of the show I head over to the Vanderbilt University campus to the Department of electrical engineering and computer science. There I spend some time interviewing students to find out what they know (and don’t know) about Blockchain tech and of course Bitcoin. I felt fortunate that I got to speak with a young man by the name of Irfaan Khalid, the President of Vandy Hacks, Vanderbilt’s annual hackathon. This hackathon attracts over 400 students from around the world who will compete from October 20th – 22n this year, building cool projects to change the world. Ahh to be young again! It was Meghan was who recorded my first college band in St Louis called Dr Seuss. He recorded many projects with me over the next couple of decades. Our first big release was for my band Enormous Richard, a twangy alt country band from St Louis. We recorded 30 songs live to cassette in a basement in Granite City IL and went on to sell and distribute several thousand copies, nearly landing a record deal in the process. Later we renamed ourselves Eleanor Roosevelt and made “Walker With His Head Down” with Meghan for his college audio program at Webster University where he studied under Barry Hufker, and Bill Porter who recorded Elvis, Roy Orbison, and The Everly Brothers. Meghan has recorded with many greats including: Cure co-founder Lol Tolhurst’s band, Levinhurst, Trey Anastasio of Phish, Jack Johnson with the Animal Liberation Orchestra, Phil Lesh & Joan Osbourne, Digable Planets, and Michael Frante to name a few. For 20 years Meghan has maintained a dual career in radio promotions, and career development & management working with many independant artists. He worked as the Project Manager at Contemporary Productions in St. Louis, SFX Entertainment, and Clear Channel Concerts. And He’s also consulted for AEG Live and Emery Entertainment. Currently, he records from his home studio which you can check out at HollywoodRecordingStudio.com, and works as a Strategy and Analytics Manager at Live Nation Entertainment’s Amphitheater division.. TheToyBoxStudioShow.com TheHayBaleStudio.com StereoSessions.com Welcome to The Toy Box Studio Show! Lij Shaw takes you inside the Hay Bale Studio backstage at the Bonnaroo festival for 2015. Lij gives you a walkthrough of the studio, and series of honest interviews with the staff and friends. This episode is like Bonnaroo… raw, fun, awesome, and also explicit. So put on some headphones if you’ve got kids around :-) Each year The Toy Box Studio packs up for the road to Bonnaroo. We build a recording studio on site behind the main stage and wrap it in a hundred bales of hay for soundproofing. We team up with an amazing staff to invite incredible artists playing Bonnaroo to record in our Hay Bale Studio. The recordings then get shared with all the radio stations at Bonnaroo. In one recording session each artist is able to hit 40 radio markets around the country at once and be viewed by the gazillions (well a lot anyway). We have recorded hundreds of bands and over a thousand songs since we began in 2005. And now we invite you to be right there in the studio with us recording with these amazing artists! So sit back and enjoy the only Bonnaroo experience more intimate than sharing a tent! Thanks to all our guests on the show!
