The husband-and-wife duo from South Carolina specialize in rootsy, bluesy rock, Americana, and alt-country, but they don't confine themselves to traditional two-piece arrangements. They switch off on vocal, guitar, percussion, and synth duty throughout their shows, orchestrating a full-band ruckus with all available limbs.Their seventh full-length, Something Is Working Up Above My Head, released in September last year, and while touring in support of it, they stopped at Nashville's Brooklyn Bowl in late February. Hey Friends~  Holidays are a time that we create stories. Stories have the power to draw our families together and we can weave into those stories the lessons that we really want our kids to know! Listening to stories is a fabulous way to TRAIN OUR IMAGINATION AND OUR LISTENING SKILLS at the same time!  Do you do any “Listen-Only” stories?  Human brains are developing differently now with so much  screen exposure.   Today, we have a master storyteller here with us!  Bob Hastings shares how his creativity was sparked through storytelling with his  kids and grandkids.  Then, he realized the immense impact and influence the stories had!  Don't underestimate the power of storytelling and what YOU can do with it!! Always cheering you on!  Dinalynn CONTACT the Host, Dinalynn:  hello@thelanguageofplay.com     ABOUT THE GUEST:    When Bob's children Andrew Wood and Erin Katherine were young, Bob made up "Woody and Katie Stories" based on their middle names. Fast forward a few decades and Drew's son Arlo asked "Bear King" (the name he calls Bob) to tell him a "wind story." That prompted Bob to create this podcast series, drawing on the arc of the adventure books he loved as a kid and continuing the tradition of naming characters loosely on children's names. Grandsons Arlo is "Loar" and Oren is "Roen." Grandnieces Aurora, Delaney and Allessandra are featured, too. They visit neighborhoods where family members live. Before he retired from the TriMet transit agency, Bob oversaw the architectural design of the Tilikum Crossing Bridge of the People over the Willamette River. He also managed the agency's alternative energy projects. Today, Bob lives in a Portland high-rise "sky cave" condo tower by the river, bridge and Ross Island. He and his wife "Bear Queen" drive an all-electric car. My guest this week is Roger Siminoff. Not only is Roger an authority on instrument making, the physics of music and tap tuning, he's also an expert on the life and work of Lloyd Loar.Loar worked at Gibson in the early 1920s and oversaw the production of some truly remarkable, game changing instruments - most notably the F5 mandolin, which went on to become an integral part of bluegrass music and shape how we see mandolins for the next 100 years. We talked about Lloyd Loar's background, why his approach to making mandolins was both revolutionary, yet also harked back 200 years to the golden age of violin making and how Roger ended up researching Loar for a magazine piece (a piece that went on to develop into an interest in Loar's work, a deep friendship with his widow, the discovery of some long lost instruments and, ultimately, a life's work for Roger himself). It was a fascinating conversation - I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.To find out more about Roger and his books, visit siminoffbooks.comIn particular check out The Life and Work of Lloyd Allayre Loar and The Art of Tap TuningRoger mentions Dan Beimborn's wonderful Mandolin Archive site, detailing all the known Loar-signed instruments out there. For more on mandolins, including info and a truly excellent forum, I can highly recommend Mandolin CafeHappy picking!MattSend a message to Bluegrass Jam Along! He led the acquisition efforts on behalf of investment groups for two Major League Baseball franchises and executed both the acquisition and sale of the Seattle Seahawks. Loar served as Vice President of Blackhawk Corporation, one of the country's largest residential and commercial real estate developers. Listen in! Key Highlights: [00:01 - 12:21] Developing Spaces for the Glory of Sports John Loar is the managing director at Music City Baseball, responsible for all the day-to-day business operations at the company. Nashville is a good location for a sports and entertainment complex because it has a high demand for tourist attractions and its economy is growing.  It is possible to have a variety of opportunities to participate in sports, and you want to look at a covered condition facility where you can accommodate that. . [12:20 - 31:44] Collaboration for Adding Value is the Key John talks about how his team is considering partnering with a historically black college or university in the area. MLB is trying to find ways to keep the fans engaged, especially younger ones, and they believe in creating a fan experience rather than just relying on game length or broadcast timing. However, there are still some challenges that new ballpark developments face, such as real estate issues and the potential for relocation. MLB is working to address these challenges.  [31:45 - 33:16] Closing Segment The conversation spurred questions from 25-year-old sports fans, so the population is engaged.  Key Quote: “How can you be a value-add?.. Tie in the hospitality component in that and add to the overall experience that people are having in this market, bringing their conventions, coming here for sports, and just coming here to see people perform." - John Loar Connect with John: Website: https://www.mlbmusiccity.com/ (https://www.mlbmusiccity.com/)  Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/nashvillestars/?hl=en (@nashvillestars) Connect with me onhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/brian-c-adams/ ( LinkedIn)! How far would you go for a great deal on the instrument of your dreams? How about a 5,500 mile trip halfway around the world in the middle of a pandemic? On this week's podcast, we meet C.J. Lewandowski, mandolinist and lead singer for the Po' Ramblin' Boys. C.J. just flew to Greece to buy a Lloyd Loar-signed Gibson F-5 mandolin, dated July 9, 1923, just like Bill Monroe's. He recounts the leap of faith he took to obtain it, the complexities of buying an instrument overseas, the condition of the mandolin when he finally obtained it (which had likely never played bluegrass prior to his ownership), and what's next. It's the ultimate guitar, err, mandolin safari tale... all the way to Athens, Greece and back. The Po' Ramblin' Boys have a great new album coming out March 25, 2022 called Never Slow Down on Smithsonian Folkways. We'll hear more about that on a future FJ Podcast episode. During out chat, we talk about the compositions found on the album, his vocal technique, Live From Here, and why even Lloyd Loar-signed Gibson F-5 mandolins aren't perfect as-is. It's a fun and insightful conversation with one of our favorite musicians.  https://www.christhile.com Originally recorded May 13, 2021.  The Fretboard Journal's 48th issue is now mailing. Ya he reservado habitaciones. ¡Tal vez incluso aprenda a pescar! Seguir leyendo...

Relic'd guitars are nothing new in the world of electric instruments, but they're relatively unheard of when it comes to acoustics. Pre-War Guitars – the duo of Wes Lambe and Ben Maschal – hopes to change that. The pair of veteran luthiers are creating guitars that tap into the vintage sound and feel of Martins and Gibsons of the 1930s and ‘40s with hide glue, ultra-thin finishes and torrefied top woods. But they're also adding scratches, dents and play wear to each of their new guitars (they offer a variety of distress levels based on a customer's preference). On this week's podcast, you can hear about how this company came together, how they're constructing these instruments and why sometimes a little wear can result in a better sounding guitar.  This week's episode is sponsored by Dying Breed Music. Our 38th issue of the Fretboard Journal is now mailing... with features on Daniel Lanois, Leo Kottke, the first "Loar" mandolin and a lot more.
