Republican? Democrat? Or just plain unhinged? Ryan Wesley Routh, 58, was arrested after allegedly attempting to assassinate Donald Trump at a golf club. It only gets weirder from there. Ryan Routh allegedly voted for Trump in 2016 but reportedly put a Biden Harris bumper sticker on his truck after growing disappointed in the former President, saying online that he'd be “glad” when Trump was “gone.” This weekend, while armed with an AK-47 style rifle and GoPro filming equipment, Routh was spotted by Secret Service and confronted with gunfire. He fled and was later apprehended by law enforcement. Who could have predicted this? Drea de Matteo is an Emmy-award winning actress from The Sopranos. This week, host Troy Edgar met with Surf City USA's City Attorney Michael Gates, in our L.A. studio. Michael was elected to City Attorney in 2014 and has been a recognized force in his community and across California on key issues of local control and voter ID. In this episode, Michael delves into his career trajectory and aspirations, contemplating a potential future shift toward the federal judiciary. He candidly voices concerns about California's leadership direction, particularly in addressing pressing issues like homelessness and crime. Emphasizing the necessity for robust law enforcement and a reevaluation of priorities to serve communities better, Gates advocates for stronger adherence to existing laws. Reflecting on his tenure since 2014, he outlines the pivotal divisions within his office—civil litigation, community prosecution, and research and advisory—underscoring the significance of local control for fostering accountability and democracy. Despite the challenges, Gates remains optimistic about California's future. Ameritocracy™ is produced by Prospect House Media and recorded in studio locations in Los Angeles and Washington D.C.

Diversification is vital to any investment portfolio. Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs) have become one of the most popular vehicles for implementing a multi-asset strategy, as they offer broad diversification, low costs, and flexibility. As the industry trends continue to evolve, how can investors position themselves to capture potential upside in different market environments? In this episode, Rusty and Robyn talk with Michael Gates, Managing Director and Head of Model Portfolio Solutions in the Americas at BlackRock. In his role, Michael leads BlackRock's suite of Target Allocation and Target Income models and mutual funds. Morningstar has awarded the Target Allocation ETF and Long Horizon ETF models that Michael manages a gold medal. Michael talks with Rusty and Robyn about the ETF industry and model portfolios. Michael also shares his outlook for the overall ETF industry, why investors prefer ETFs to direct index solutions, and what Blackrock's multi-asset investment strategy entails. Quotes [08:11] - "ETFs are a big part of what financial advisors want to use because ETFs are reliable in terms of what they deliver, and they're low fees relative to legacy mutual funds." ~ Michael Gates [10:09] - "The ability to take and deliver in kind is something that you can only do with an ETF structure. It's not something you can do with the direct index." ~ Michael Gates [10:31] - "The trend that flows from mutual funds into ETFs is partly driven by the transition that we've observed of the brokers becoming advisors." ~ Michael Gates Links Michael Gates on LinkedIn BlackRock Taking Me Back by Jack White SteeleGates Rain, Steam and Speed by William Turner Larry Fink iShares Aperio Group BlackRock Aladdin Andrew Huberman Steve Jobs by Walter Isaacson Connect with our hosts Rusty Vanneman Robyn Murray Subscribe and stay in touch Apple Podcasts Spotify Google Podcasts
This is a summary of “Index + Factors + Alpha,” by Andrew Ang, Linxi Chen, Michael Gates, and Paul D. Henderson, published in the Fourth Quarter 2021 issue of the Financial Analysts Journal.
Tune in to listen to Dave and Nick's review of First Quarter 2021. If you have any questions or would like a review of your portfolio and financial plan, contact our advisors by calling or emailing us at 517-321-4832 or info@srbadvisors.com. 1Q 2021 Broad Markets The first quarter of 2021 was another strong quarter for stock markets around the globe. The broad measure of the US markets was up 6.35% and international stocks were up 4.04%. Emerging markets rose 2.29% and global real estate rose 6.22%. 1Q 2021 Bonds Bonds, on the other hand, had a lousy start to the year which tempered first-quarter returns for diversified portfolios. Yields rose on intermediate-term and long-term bonds, pushing bond prices down. The broad US bond market dropped 3.37% and international bonds were down 1.90%. Good News: Markets are Strong! In light of all the challenges our economy has faced over the last year, people we talk to find it hard to believe that the markets have remained so strong. The markets may seem irrational, but there are definite positive points to consider: Government Stimulus. While Covid shutdowns have hurt many Americans financially, much of this damage has been offset by unprecedented government stimulus. Furthermore, many people have been saving money during the lockdowns that they plan to spend as life returns to normal. Low Interest Rates. Meanwhile, the Federal Reserve has pledged to maintain low short-term interest rates until they are sure the economy is back on its feet. That means the trade-off between safe savings accounts and return potential on risk assets looks more attractive, bringing money into the market. There is an old market adage: Don't fight the Fed when they are trying to stimulate the economy. Rotation in Market Leaders. Furthermore, we are seeing “rotation” in the market leaders: The market over the last several years has been led by a handful of large growth-oriented companies, such as Facebook and Apple. Since fall, we have seen market leadership pass to a much broader base of companies that had underperformed relative to those few companies. This is a sign of broader health in the market. Cutting Costs. As BlackRock's Michael Gates, CFA put it, “You can make a lot of money in stocks when the economy simply improves from a ‘total disaster' to not so bad.” During sharp downturns (like we had last spring) companies are forced to aggressively cut costs to keep going. Then, as the economy returns to normal, their earnings improve while they maintain those low costs. The result is stronger earnings that drive the market forward. Some Concerns There are still reasons for concern as well. The market's rise has been built around the scenario that the virus is contained and that economic life returns to normal later this year. Threats to that scenario would cause a market backlash. Inflation is also a concern: with record stimulus and government spending. With the economy returning to normal, inflation could rise sharply and cut off economic growth. The Federal Reserve may need to reverse its policy of low short-term rates to head off this issue. That could lead to tough stock and bond market conditions. Where do we go from here? As always, we can't say what will happen in the short run. The economic positives indicate the bull market can keep running. However, we know there will be corrections and setbacks along the way. Longer-term, our expectations are overall returns will probably be lower than in recent history. Long-term averages stay stable, so a prolonged period of outperformance will usually be followed by a period of underperformance. Download Our Full Report Need Help? In the winter of 1931, a dramatic manhunt unfolded in northern Canada when a reclusive trapper shot a constable and fled across the frigid landscape. In the chase that followed the mysterious fugitive amazed his pursuers with his almost superhuman abilities. In this week's episode of the Futility Closet podcast we'll describe the hunt for the "Mad Trapper of Rat River." We'll also visit a forgotten windbreak and puzzle over a father's age. Intro: Korean soldier Yang Kyoungjong was conscripted successively by Japan, the Soviet Union, and Germany. In 1978, Arnold Rosenberg examined idioms to trace a path to the most incomprehensible natural language. RCMP constable Alfred King is at far left in the photo; constable Edgar Millen is second from right. I share some shares talk stories from the recent USGA US Amateur at Oakland Hills in Bloomfield Hills near my home town Detroit. My first guests are long time friends who I had not seen for a long time. Art and Jeannie McCafferty, The Publishers of Great Lakes Sports Publication. 30+ years of publishing Michigan Runner and Michigan Golfer. We were standing outside Oakland Hills Club House and had just created a video for their on-line Great Lakes Sports Publications talking golf and running. I credit Art with putting our Emily Detroit Runs on the map. We were all pioneers at the time in our own way. Joining us is long time Michigan Golfer and Michigan Runner Photographer Carter Sherline who reflects on the people and events he has covered over the years and shares some fun stories. We also talk about the rich history of golf in Michigan and at Oakland Hills. Well, we just have plenty of nice things to say to each other and it was fun including the stories from the Emily Detroit Runs in the 70's-80's Next I talked with Mark Passey, USGA Scoreboard Calligrapher who shares some stories about the handwritten score boards and the effort made to continue to use them at USGA events. I love the hand written score boards-Traditionalist! Australian Curtis Luck, 2016 US Amateur Champion is a guest from the media center where he had an extended conversation with us. I also caught up with his mother Jody and his father Stewart Luck, integral part of his story from being a junior golfer to now US Amateur Champion. Brad Dalke, US Amateur runner-up to Curtis shares his feelings about his week at the US Amateur and his heading back to college play at Oklahoma with a lot of confidence. As I was walking out of past a hospitality tent I talked with 14 year old Michael Gates and his fellow caddies Orza Robertson II, Ashish Purania, Aidan Parrott. They are caddies under Caddie Master Jim Roechefski at Oakland Hills. I knew before I even talked with Michael he and the rest of the crew had experienced a week they will never forget. They had a spring in their step, smiling and still working hard cleaning up and you'll hear the enthusiasm in their voices. Fun chatting with them.
