#bengals Cincinnati Bengals middle linebacker Logan Wilson joins Dave Lapham in the Trenches today brought to you by First Star Logistics. Logan is coming off two amazing seasons where he has excelled as a young player in the NFL. The 2023 season is a big season for Logan because it's the final year of his contract so he will try to play his best to earn the most money possible for his next contract. Logan and Bengals have already begun contract negotiations but will most likely be on hold until the Bengals figure out Joe Burrow's contract first. Wilson isn't focused on his contract though he is focused on being the leader of one of the best defenses in the NFL. With Jessie Bates leaving in free agency Wilson will have to step up and be the quarterback of this very strong defense. Lapham and Wilson talk about his defense back upbringing and how that has helped him be one of the best cover linebackers in the NFL. Wilson also shows high praise for defense coordinator Lou Anarumo who has made a name for himself the past two seasons and if the Bengals defense has another strong year in 2023 you figure it will be hard to keep teams away from Lou as their head coach in the years to come.

In the 26th Episode of "Shel-Shocked," Shelby covers a number of topics including how he and the other veterans on the team make sure 1 loss to Philly doesn't turn into 4 straight (5:57). The New York Giants hadn't won an NFL championship in 30 years before Bill Parcells' led them to two Super Bowl victories in 5 years. 1986 the Giants were loaded. On defense, Lawrence Taylor, considered by many to be the best Outside Linebacker ever to play the game, won the NFL MVP Award. He and Middle Linebacker, Harry Carson, both future Hall of Famers, led an overwhelming defense. On offense, the Giants were led by Tight End Mark Bavaro, 1500 yard rusher, Joe Morris and Quarterback Phil Simms, a good quarterback who had yet to prove he could be great. In Super Bowl XXI he did just that with a precision passing game that is unmatched as the Giants defeated the Broncos 39-20.

Kristian is a linebacker for the Baltimore Ravens. He is from Iola, Wisconsin and played for the Hawkeyes in '16-'19. He found early playing time as an athletic special teamer and played in over 40 games in the Black and Gold. In his Junior and Senior seasons he started at Middle Linebacker for Iowa teams that finished 9-4 and 10-3 including 2 Bowl victories over Mississippi St. and USC. We sat down with Kristian to talk his journey to Iowa City, Coach Seth Wallace, learning behind guys like Josey Jewell, Bo Bower, and Ben Niemann, being denied a Pro Day and entering the league during Covid, being on a team with Lamar Jackson and other elite NFL players, and more. The mindset of being 'overlooked' is present throughout his story and it was awesome to pick his brain on how he approaches being a fringe guy that works his ass off to make it.

Hear about "The Stop"  -  one of the most famous tackles in NFL history - in Dan's own words, memories of his teammates from that golden era, and how the day AFTER game day felt for an NFL middle linebacker.

Transcription: 00:13          When you watch a basketball game or play in a game of any sport or watch football game, who do you cheer for? Well, I always cheer for the underdog. But look at the comeback. 17:14-17 scripture says this, "these will wage war against the lamb and the lamb will overcome them because He is Lord of Lords and the King of Kings and those who are with him are the called and the chosen and the faithful. And he said to me, the waters which you saw where the harlot sits are peoples and multitudes and nations and tongues, and the 10 horns which you saw are the beast. These will hate the harlot and will make her desolate and naked and will eat her flesh and will burn her up with fire. For God has put in his heart to execute his purpose by having a common purpose and by giving their kingdom to the beast until the words of God will be fulfilled."   01:41          Let me tell you about the day that Razorback stadium was silent. The craziest, wildest fans in the United States of America are the Arkansas Razorbacks. We were playing the Razorback in War Memorial Stadium in Little Rock. And I literally walked on the field and I felt the earth shake underneath my feet. They were number two in the nation that year. And you know what? They jumped out to a 35 to nothing lead over our little SMU team and we were getting killed.   02:08          But Bruce Portillo stepped into the huddle, our Middle Linebacker, and he said, come on guys, we can stop these people. And I don't know what it was about Bruce Portillo, but he had something charismatic about him. And you know what, they didn't make another first down. There are only 10 minutes left on the clock and we scored four straight touchdowns. And even though if we would've gotten the ball one more time, we would've beat those people. We didn't. We lost 35 to 28. We won an incredible victory that day. The day when razorback stadium was silenced. And so it will be with the work of Satan. And he is literally taking over the earth today as our nation has decided to kick him out of everything that we do. Kicking him out of prayer schools and Bible reading schools.   02:59          And it take a God and His name out of public life where you can't even put a manger scene, you know, out in a public place or put a cross in a tribute to a soldier. It looks like Satan is taking over the world, but he's not. And at the end, Jesus is going to win. Jesus is going to reign because Jesus is going to overcome. And those who love him and follow him are gonna reign with him forever and ever. And so the question for you and I today is, which side are we own? You know, Jesus said, no man can serve two masters. Either you love the one and hate the other, or you'll serve the one and despise the other. He says, you can't serve God and Mammon in chapter five of Matthew. So which side of your on? He said, either you're for me or you're against me and today you and I get to choose sides. He looks like the underdog, but I'll tell you he's going to win in the end.

The Redskins marched out of the 'Clink' in Seattle victorious in an unlikely 17-14 win. So how did they do it? Well, a huge part of that was the astounding level of play of the Washington defense.
