Follow OBM on Twitter and Instagram - In this episode I talk about the missing drum kits within modern pop music. I miss hearing the sound of real drums being played in modern music and I was reminded of just how much I miss it when I heard En Vogue's 1997 single 'Don't Let Go' being played on the radio at a shopping mall. Long live real drums!
Hello everyone, welcome to Chit & Chat; Encouraging One Another Podcast, interviewing people from all over the world hearing their story and sharing encouragement and laughter all over the world. My guest today is Austin Hopkins is an independent singer-songwriter from the suburbs of Chicago. His distinctive voice gives him a unique mix between country twang and modern pop. Austin bases his music on real life situations so the listener can really relate to the lyrics. Austin has always loved music since he was a child, but didn't pick up a guitar until he was 23. A single dad at that time, trying to practice and raise his son, he found songwriting an outlet to everyday life and relationship stress. In 2009, Austin entered a contest hosted by a local radio station. To Austin's surprise, he was selected as one of the finalists. He performed his first original song “Beauty In The Breakdown”. Though he didn't move on to the next round, he used that experience to fuel him, and continued to song write and play at local shows. Austin's dream is to become a professional songwriter in Nashville. He hopes to achieve this goal by continuing to produce new music for all to hear. I am sharing 2 of his songs today and please check out his website @ www.austinhopkinsmusic.com Also am I am featuring music by two of my good friends. Kirstie Kraus- Just One More, She's thirsty for love and magic, for joy and sunshine. She's thirsty for compassion and authenticity. And more than anything, she's thirsty for anything that sets her soul on fire. Kirstie Kraus carries her thirst in her songwriting, in her live shows, and in her everyday connection with other kindred spirits. Her writing infuses her own transparent journey with others' experiences to create sustainable lyrics and catchy melodies. The result is a perfect blend of country, funk, blues, and rock because with Kirstie, there are no boundaries. There's only the process of “letting go” and letting the song tell you what it wants to be. Also featuring a very powerful song by Cory M. Coons, called Remember Me. For the past 30 years, Ottawa-based singer-songwriter Cory M Coons has been performing and recording his signature blend of rootsy rock. His brand of melodic, guitar-driven music and often introspective lyrics have brought favorable comparisons to icons like Bon Jovi, John Mellencamp, Tom Petty and others. Coons has amassed over 170K Spotify streams, and he has racked up both a Top 20 iTunes Canada single and a #2 international iTunes single. On Episode 227, we are joined by the acclaimed music writer Bob Stanley, the man behind one of Niall's favourite books Yeah Yeah Yeah: The Story of Modern Pop and a member of indie-pop group St. Etienne. To celebrate 10 years of Faber Books are reissuing Yeah Yeah Yeah (with a new chapter taking it up to present day) , along with its prequel Let's Do It: The Birth of Pop (the definitive story of the birth of Pop, from 1900 to the mid-fifties), both on paperback.Along with the books, Bob Stanley also put together a compilation for Ace Records called Latin Freestyle - New York/Miami 1983 - 1992, in his words a crashing electro-funk sub genre of dance music. It was the aural equivalent of a can of thirst-quenching Quatro or a Spanish Harlem dance-off, and it became the electronically constructed bridge between disco and house.Latin Freestyle grew out of electro, and was a more female-fronted classic pop version with frequently Latina vocals, bleepy synth riffs, proto-house piano lines, drum machine hits and lyrics that harked back to '60s girl groups teenage concerns of heartbreak, boys and dancing. We talk to Bob about the books and this subgenre of electro music that developed in New York and Miami in the early 80s and included Madonna, Debbie Deb, Shannon, Alisha, Company B, Lisa Lisa, Exposé, Taylor Dane and went on to influence music from the Bee Gees' Robin Gibb, Pet Shop Boys, Freeez and more.A playlist of Latin Freestyle accompanies this episode on Patron. In 1964, Louis Armstrong knocked the Beatles off the top of the charts with his recording of “Hello, Dolly!” becoming, at age 62, the oldest artist to ever hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100. Sixty years later, Louis Armstrong remains a beloved cultural figure, his oft-imitated voice still instantly recognizable. But Armstrong is more than a source of levity — his artistry and innovations when he made his first recordings a century ago in 1923 set the template for the modern pop star. On this centennial episode, hear Armstrong as you've never heard him: a defiant, pathbreaking musician whose voice resonates in every hit record. Songs Discussed Louis Armstrong - Hello, Dolly! JUST TALKING Writer/Director Jenny Waldo joins JUST TALKING to discuss her debut feature film “Acid Test.” Set in the 90's “Acid Test” is a female coming of age rebellion story fueled by Riot Grrrl music, a dysfunctional family and LSD. Based on director Jenny Waldo's personal life the film was part therapy and an opportunity to fill the void of missing female punk film directors since the days of Tank Girl. “Acid Test” is strong with the Riot Grrrl manifesto—heavily influenced by bands like Bikini Kill and lead singer Debbie Harry from Blondie.

In this episode, I talk about how the beta mentality is deeply, deeply entrenched in modern art, pop culture, and entertainment. I believe that this contributes to why there are so many people in our modern culture who act entitled, who won't take personal responsibility for themselves in life, and I think that it's super important for alphas to be aware of this. In this episode we discuss why pop music sucks as well as current movie and television releases. All this is done while sipping a cappuccino
Julie launched Modern Pop, a retro/classic-looking, edgy branded product that consists of incredibly nutritious bars produced from real fruit. She noticed that supplying nutrition to her children was becoming increasingly difficult, so she devised a plan to freeze authentic products in popsicle form and serve them in a delectable way. In general, she was a mother on a mission to assist her teething child. As a result, Modern Pop was born. They're available at Sprouts around the country, as well as Kroger, CVS, and other wonderful stores. They also have a line of popsicles that use actual avocado to provide extra creaminess to the bars. The regional Victorian town of Bendigo has scored a major coup with a new exhibition to bring many of Elvis Presley's personal and family items direct from Graceland to detail his life story. But standing aback, parallels begin to emerge from the lives of The King of Rock n Roll and a modern pop Queen.

SUPPORT ME ON PATREON WATCH MUSIC is not a GENRE VIDEOS and MORE Four on the floor. Boom boom boom. Nothing sounds quite like an 8-0-8. All about that bass. The vast majority of modern music is built on electronic drums. And that vast majority of THAT music is structured around a steady 4/4 beat – y'know something you can dance to. Sure, dance music has existed probably since music was first invented. Rhythm is way to important for it not to have been a key element in separating random noise from deliberate creation. And music doesn't even have to be labeled as “dance music” for you to be able to dance to it. But there are certain kinds of music designed and labeled specifically for dancing (gavotte, anyone?). Which brings us to house. House started out as basically electronic disco with a deeper kick. It was a way for people without a band to make music they could spin at clubs. In fact, most historians say the term “house” came from the late great Chicago club, The Warehouse, which closed in 1983, right at the cusp of house music's invention. People wanted music like the music they spun at “the ‘House”. And from there was spawned just about every kind of electronic dance music (EDM) since then. Is all EDM house? No. And though house wasn't the first ever EDM, it became so influential that just about every kind of electronic music today owes something to house. Now, house isn't my favorite type of music by any means. Repetition is essential on so many levels, but for me there needs to be more texture, more layers, to keep my attention. That said, I have huge respect for house – as I do for its parent, disco – because it was created to be a safe & inclusive place for the disenfranchised to come together and celebrate being alive. People of color, the LGBTQ community, anyone who felt “other than” among their friends & family. And just as important for me, house emphasizes my belief that DANCING is an essential part of living a good life. Chip E. was a house pioneer. Some even call him the “godfather of house”. I own Chip E.'s “Like This” because I was a DJ in the mid-late 1980s. I knew even then that I couldn't live without dancing, and moreover wanted to provide the music other people could dance to. I've been doing electronic music since the very beginning of my career, and dance music of all kinds. Since my band REC's album, Distance to Empty, almost all of my music has been electronic in some way. It's why I classify what I do as “progressive electro power pop”. As for any of my music being a direct descendent of house, there's less of that. But it's there. And in fact, this REC single is very clearly house-inspired: REC - “All Kinds of Right (The Highway 28 Song)” (feat. Cathryn Lynne - from the album Synergy for the Weird) Do you know house music? Are you into it, or any kind of EDM? Or are you into any of the many artists influenced by house – like Madonna, Rihanna, Daft Punk, Calvin Harris? Discuss dammit! --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/nick-dematteo/support

I love this podcast more than I love redoing those small moments. This is a good one. The first episode to last over an hour deals with Alfred Hitchcock, who is widely regarded to be one of the greatest directors of all time -- including to me. Enjoy, anddddd Merry Christmas. I pronounce mise-en-scene like a Californian. Also… Did you get my Grammarly joke? Because everyone uses Grammarly, lmao. This question was sent by Markus, and he writes: “At the moment I started to play hymns. Some time in the future I want to do church service. And I want to improvise hymns over modern pop and musical music just by hearing the song in the radio. A really high challenging goal for a late-beginner, I know. :) Therefore I really appreciate your melodic dictation course. Thanks, Markus”
In episode 466, I chat with Professional Modern/Pop Violinist & Performer/Entertainer Kiev Morales who found a passion for violin at a young age after seeing someone play the instrument in a new way. Listen as he talks about how as a young adult he plays daily for hours at the Santa Monica Pier in California, how he met and works with a drummer, how he's built a business playing at events, how he kept playing every night online during quarantine and how his favorite part is the way the audience interacts and gets inspired by his craft. Plus you'll hear him play twice!
A new trend on YouTube known as bardcore sees modern pop songs like Foster The People's "Pumped Up Kicks" or Lady Gaga's "Bad Romance" reimagined in a medieval sound.
“This is plant-based with all the taste. A truly delicious non-dairy dessert… and the best popsicle on the market” Lori Taylor (1:30) When life gives you lemons, make strawberry lemonade popsicles. When Julie Podolec's son was teething, she wandered the aisles of the grocery store to find a natural frozen treat to help soothe his sore gums. However, as she read the ingredient lists she quickly realized that these weren't products she would be purchasing for her child. The treats were characteristically high in sugar, low in fruit, and/or listed water as the first ingredient. Instead of becoming discouraged, Julie went home, rolled up her sleeves, pulled out her blender, and made the treats that she couldn't find in stores. And The Modern Pop was born. Julie Podolec is the Founder and CMO of this fun, bright, natural frozen treat brand that is taking over the West Coast. Julie and her husband have worked to weave the California sunshine right into their brand. “The brand commitment is ‘fruit first.'” Julie Podolec (5:15) What's in Modern Pop… or more importantly, what isn't?! If you, like Julie, were to seek out a frozen bar for yourself or your family, you would find that fruit doesn't make a mention until about halfway down the ingredient list. Modern Pop isn't satisfied with a middle-of-the-pack fruit bar, and is committed to making fruit the first ingredient on the list! They don't stop there! The fruit they use is individually quick frozen (IQF), meaning it is picked and preserved at the peak of harvest. This method maintains high nutrient value and produce integrity, and is highly regarded in the produce industry. All of their bars are vegan certified and non-GMO. They steer clear of additives like gums and keep their ingredient list to a minimum. “Our purpose is to be as close to homemade as we possibly can.” - Julie Podolec (7:47) Creating a healthier indulgence. Modern Pop began with the frozen fruit bar, but they have recently embarked into new territory. Their goal was to create an indulgent bar that could still be dairy free, nutrient dense, and not loaded with sugar. The building blocks of a frozen dessert indulgence (like your very favorite ice cream) typically include dairy, fat, and sugar. Modern Pop began to seek out a healthier way to incorporate all of these elements. Avocados are no stranger to produce fans, but utilizing them in dessert? Modern Pop took these nutrient-dense fat bombs and began experimentation. The result? A creamy, dessert base with a flavor mild enough to complement new imaginations of classic desserts! Mint Chip. Chocolate Fudge. Cookies N' Cream. All vegan, dairy free, and most importantly, delicious and full of nutrients for your family. Modern Pop is dedicated to creating products that everyone can enjoy and love. Julie is an incredible example of a Produce Mom who saw a need and stepped up to create a solution. And we're so glad she did! Modern Pop is than a product, it's a passion that Julie and her family have dedicated their lives to pursuing and sharing with the world. 026: Alfred Rutherford, Jr.We’re back! This is Play It Like It’s Music, thanks for listening. On Wednesday, February 11th of 2020 Music is not content. It's connection.I've been going through it a little bit, like ya do. It's kind of grounding for me to check in with you all every week. It keeps me aligned with what I'm doing but mainly also the why. We can lose track of the Why so easily. Thanks for being here.In Memoriam: Lyle MaysI just found out about the passing of Lyle Mays, apparently after a long recurring illness. And I'm pretty gutted by this one, even though great musicians are passing with some regularity lately. It's a huge, huge loss.By the way, don't feel bad if you've never heard of him. So many artists don't get to be in the news until they either win an Oscar or they die. If this is the case for you, please do yourself a favor and put his name into that search box. With literally any note that man ever played, I felt his depth and connection to what might best be called "Musical Infinity". In fact, f**k it. I'll borrow this phrase from Allen Toussaint, which he used to describe Chuck Berry: The man is a mountain.Lyle Mays. My early dalliances with modern instrumental music were propelled in a huge way, back when I was in high school, by listening obsessively to the Pat Metheny Group. It's actually tough for me to admit that, because later I came to reject that same music and any aesthetic remotely connected to it. I went through deep phases of both loving and hating both the sound and the actual music. It's all my own s**t, maybe you can relate. I can laugh about it now, but as we're developing in music and our tastes evolve, we uncover new areas and it's common to shift gears. Some people come out of the ground just like a potato and they never change what music they like. But I'm not one of those people. I have actually changed my musical tastes so many times that I frequently forget who I am. I listen really hard, and I also play hard and practice hard. I go hard in lots of directions, and one of these was deliberately trying to throw off my addiction to what you might call "finger jazz", that supernoodle, hyper-intricate polyphony that the Metheny vibe is most associated with. I'd been weaned on it, and I became convinced that I needed to wean myself off of it. I thought it might be holding me back from getting laid or something, who knows. It was a long time ago.It can happen, and my real reasons were sound but also sad: I didn't believe I'd ever be a good enough player to work in those circles. Not only did I lack confidence, but even hearing folks - friends of mine - who played at that level made me feel bad about myself. My string playing ability seemed stuck somewhere in space between the suzuki method and the world of guitar gods, and far from those extremes I grew very lonely. I plateaued there for a long time and started to feel like I was running out of air. It hurt, and I decided I no longer could afford to listen to music that didn't shine a light on my own path forward. The complexity was too intimidating for me.I stopped believing in anything but the simplest possible music, stuff I could try to play on my cello, and my path became very narrow. I laugh about it now because I eventually healed myself and my attitude and I found a way to start playing again. It was all in my head like you might guess. And my feelings about the Metheny group eventually settled down into a loving appreciation, the kind one might feel for a friend with whom I'd lost touch over the years but for whom you have great respect. And that's where that music lives for me, it's a place of deep respect. But of course we're fortunate that Metheny is still with us and still pushing music forward.None of this is about him though.Lyle Mays was and remains the core of my connection to that group, and also very close to the trunk of my own musical tree of influences. He made the keyboards not only sing, but shine. He brought a magic to the stage, and to the very idea of musicmaking. Genius. The man was an unbelievable genius, and the music just emanated from him. I really can't put into words just what kind of player he was. Marketing folks need to sort us into genres, but the more you love music the more music you love. The more you inhabit music, the more the music will inhabit you. Lyle Mays was one of the closest things I ever saw to a pure musical being. Go listen. Start maybe with his solo album from the year 2000 and work backward, or start from the beginning and work forward. Or anywhere really. Now that there's a bookend to the man's work, maybe I'll discover my own courage and dive back in to that infinite pursuit. Here's to you Lyle, thank you for your gifts and your work which will continue to teach us.In honor of Lyle, today we're going to hear from a great piano player. His name is Alfred Ruthorford, Jr. Listening back to this interview in the edit, my jaw just kept hitting the floor as he dropped one gem after the next. In case you don't already know and admire him, Alfred is a native of Memphis Tennessee. The best business ideas are often borne out of a personal desire to find something better than what is already available. That’s certainly what led to the birth of Modern Pop. Julie Podolec and her husband, Brad, wanted to give their teething infant a frozen fruit bar. But when they began reading the ingredients, they were dismayed to find that these bars contained too little fruit and too much sugar and fruit juice. And, there were some ingredients they couldn’t even pronounce. So Julie set out to create a frozen fruit bar that was healthy and safe enough for her child. Modern Pop was born. Modern Pop’s frozen fruit bars have taken off. The company recently launched three new flavors and expanded nationally into over 3,000 retailers.
