Send us a textThis week, the show welcomes automotive media veteran Eddie Alterman to chat about cars, the automotive industry, and watches. Eddie served as the Editor in Chief of Car & Driver for 10 years, and now finds himself leading automotive editorial for Hearst, overseeing properties like Car & Driver, Road & Track, Motortrend, Hot Rod, Autoweek, and a personal favorite, Bring A Trailer. There is a surprising amount of overlap between how we think about cars and watches of a certain era, which has defined our enthusiasm for both, and we get into just why that is in this episode. Ram has unveiled the 2025 Ram 2500 and 3500 Heavy Duty pickups, offering exceptional capability, enhanced towing features, and cutting-edge technology. Our special guest this week, Ram Product Communications specialist Nick Kappa, will tell us all about the new trucks. The heavy haulers feature a powerful Cummins 6.7-liter inline-six turbo diesel engine or a 6.4-liter gas-fueled HEMI V-8. The 2025 Ram 2500 offers improved 0 to 60 mph and quarter-mile times, delivering quicker, more responsive performance. The pickups also feature an advanced Uconnect 5 system with a 14.5-inch screen, a segment-first 10.25-inch passenger screen, 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, digital rearview mirror, and dual wireless phone charging pad. The pair also include an on-board power inverter, adaptive cruise control, ParkSense front/rear park assist, drowsy driver detection, traffic sign recognition, and active lane management. Kappa will deliver additional details and also preview the Ramcharger electrified pickup that is also on the way. In our road tests this week, Host Jack Nerad takes us behind the wheel of the 2025 Lexus ES 350 F SPORT Handling with the Black Line Special Edition Package. A luxury sedan with elegant styling, advanced technology, and driving dynamics, the ES 350 test vehicle featured exclusive F SPORT Handling tuning, a premium interior, and advanced safety technologies. The 3.5-liter V6 engine, producing 302 horsepower, is at the heart of the model. Nerad and co-host Chris Teague will answer the big question: does the F Sport Handling Black Line Special edition deliver performance to match its looks? Across the country, Teague road tests another version of one of our favorite vehicles of the past year or two — the 2025 Hyundai Santa Fe Calligraphy. The top-of-the-line midsize SUV has every whistle and bell one could imagine. Is it worth the added coin to buy it versus a mid-range Santa Fe? We'll let you know. In the news this week, the move to self-driving cars continues as Uber and Waymo bring a new driverless taxi service to Austin, Texas, right in Tesla's backyard. We'll have more details and our reaction. Speaking of Tesla, we've heard reports that Tesla is getting some blowback as the result of Elon Musk's cost-cutting efforts in the federal government, but is the so-called “Tesla Takedown” real? And who is behind these reports? We help provide some clarity. In a mirror to the cost-cutting of the U.S. government, Mercedes-Benz has indicated it is now scaling back based on the increased competition it is encountering around the world. We'll give you details. Motor Trend has put together a list of the quickest electric cars it has tested, and we'll have that for you, along with our thoughts on these crazy-fast EVs. As always, a lot to talk about this week. We thank you for joining us. We talk with SCCA Hall of Fame race car driver Randy Pobst. From his racing origins in a Mk1 VW Rabbit, to his 2 wins at the 24 Hours of Daytona, and his personal car collection – including his Smokey and the Bandit Trans Am and Flyin' Moose Volvo 740. To start, we'll dive into Randy's racing experience: factory contracts with Porsche, Mazda, Volvo, and Toyota. Winning the 24 Hours of Daytona not once, but twice, and his 2015 induction into the SCCA Hall of Fame. We'll cover his exploits at Thunderhill, VIR, Road Atlanta, Laguna Seca, Daytona, Pikes Peak, Sonoma, Lime Rock, Willow Springs, and more! From humble origins in a Mk1 VW Golf (no, not a GTI), to a factory-backed FX16 Toyota Corolla, to setting a Laguna Seca lap record in a McLaren Senna. Randy even worked on the set of 2 Fast 2 Furious as a driving instructor for the film's stars: Paul Walker, Tyrese Gibson, and Devon Aoki – to name a few. Randy eventually met Jason while filming an uncooperative Cayman GT4 for Motor Trend, and, despite a rocky start when Jason unexpectedly flung a Range Rover off track while racing Randy in an Alfa Romeo 4C, the two teamed up again to film multiple Ultimate Drag Race, Lap Battle and ICONS episodes for Hagerty. The whole gang laments some of the most irritating modern car tech: excessively bright headlights, lights that are somehow off at night, ABS systems that fully shut down when traveling backwards, AEB overreach, and EPAS systems that completely ruin a car's limit handling by curtailing the driver's ability to quickly catch a slide (like the Shelby GT350 Randy repeatedly spun and Jason crinkled at Willow Springs – not to mention the Unplugged Performance Tesla Model 3 Randy famously wrecked at Pikes Peak). Speaking of handling, Randy divulges his dislike of twitchy cars like the Jaguar F-Type R and XJ, the KTM X-Bow, and Ariel Atom. Jason on the other hand loves an ass-y car like the V12 Vantage S, but says the Lotus Exige V6 Cup was so tail-happy it was uncontrollable. The Porsche Carrera GT is somewhere in the middle with mixed reviews and experience all around. While on the topic of handling dynamics, Randy tells us his secret plan to invent a fix for the C8 Corvette's trailing throttle oversteer. He also gives praise to Porsche's Lars Kern for his work on the latest crop of RS products – which may or may not be Randy's favorite track cars of all time out of the box, alongside the 2014 Porsche 911 50th Anniversary Edition. All of which receive top marks on Randy's understeer spectrum, and are polar opposites of the likes of a 1960s Cadillac. We'll touch on Randy's personal car collection as well, which includes a Volvo 740 sedan and wagon, his 1977 Pontiac Trans Am “Randit” (and its oil starvation woes), Toyota Tundra tow vehicle, VW Karmann Ghia and early Tesla Model S. Plus, Derek invents a new phrase for “road rage”, Randy bitch slaps cars out of his way, and also beautifully sings Primus' Wynona's Big Brown Beaver. Learn more about your ad choices. Starting from his childhood fascination with media, Scot Safon shares his professional journey starting in the advertising agency world and moving to executive marketing roles in major media companies such as CNN, TNT, HLN, The Weather Channel, and more. He recounts anecdotes from his formative years, explains his career transitions, and outlines his current consulting practice. Scot grew up in a diverse, working-class neighborhood in Bay Shore, New York, a town on the south shore of Long Island. He is a long-time friend of Tammy's going back to junior high school. Scot appreciated the variety of hardworking adult role models who demonstrated that family life was not superseded by one's work. While he always enjoyed learning and his classes, he noted that his favorite activities went beyond classroom time. He was fascinated with all kinds of media. At a young age, he would go to sleep listening to news radio, he went to every movie he could (that didn't have an R rating), and later took the train to New York City to see Broadway shows every chance he could. Through his school and university years, Scot was active in the drama club, an editor for his high school newspaper, a curator and promoter for a film festival, and he worked as a reporter for a regional NPR station near his college. Scot attended the University of Virginia, where he earned his BA and went on to Cornell University for his MBA. He then went to New York City to work in advertising on consumer product accounts. Scot set his sights on moving over to the media industry and was offered an opportunity to work on the CBS Network account. Then he moved to Atlanta to work for Turner Network Television, elevating to serve as Chief Marketing Officer or Head of Marketing for a number of major media brands across a 40-year career, including CNN, The Weather Channel, TNT, and MotorTrend. He also was the EVP/General Manager of CNN's HLN network. Today Scot is a media marketing and branding consultant whose clients range from global blue-chip brands to not-for-profits. He advises C-suite decision-makers on strategic communications to launch products, address crises, and explain policies. His focus: helping clients "find the right words" to support their initiatives. His consulting clients have included Ford, HBO Max, Showtime, the Scripps Networks, The Grand Ole Opry, and New America. He is a consulting associate with agencies Civic Entertainment and Cultique. Emphasizing curiosity and adaptability, Scot offers valuable insights on navigating career advancements and leveraging the power of effective communication. His journey illustrates how passion, persistence, and a willingness to embrace new challenges can lead to a fulfilling career in media. Once again we're proud to be associated with the historic name that has made cars fast for years and years, and their innovations continue forward (as always)! Visit https://www.holley.com and tell them we sent you! ======================================== Roadkill – Finale As you have heard already the rumors circulating the closing of Motor Trend Productions are all true. Unfortunately the shows housed and produced by Motor Trend are no more. This does include “Roadkill,” its flagship and genre changing show. It's a bi-product of being owned by a large conglomerate as well as being a niche of a niche of entertainment media. All episodes filmed not yet released will be aired over the winter of 2025/2025 but no further will be created. We discussed the news of it all and and some point we'll have Mike Finnegan our friend (and Kibbe and Finnegan show co-founder) on to chat about it. No matter what spin you put on it the reality of Roadkill both creating and changing the automotive space are complexly undeniable. David Frieburger and Mike Finnegan made a team that were the best of the best in automotive tom-foolery entertainment. We loved them too! David Freiburger has given a good explanation the situation along with what's next for the full band of Motor Trend characters (visit TheDrive.com for more on that). While none of us know whether Roadkill will ever return on a different platform, it does seem like the sun has set on it and this last piece of legacy automotive media is officially over. In the short term we know that everyone has moved on to YouTube (if they hadn't already) and we can continue to have them in our lives there! Thanks, boys. It was magical! ======================================== Thanksgiving Movie Review: "Tower Heist" K&F Movie Summary: Tower Heist is the automotive Thanksgiving movie classic you didn't know you were missing until now, especially if you're Corndog! This movie stars a MASSIVE cadre os actors including Ben Stiller, Eddie Murphy, Alan Alda, Casey Afflect, Tea Leoni, Mechael Pena, and Matthew Broderick. This is the tale of a group of not quite as cool as Oceans 11 people that get taken by a Ponzi scheme by Hawkeye from MASH. And then – to get their money back – they steal Steve McQueen's Ferrari from the top of Trump Tower during the Thanksgiving Parade, all using a handy roof crane. You will laugh, you will squirm, and you will probably be looking up during the Thanksgiving Day Parade from here on out…..so you don't get squished by a Ferrari made of gold. This movie is a forgotten gem that has everything going for it. ======================================== Join up via Patreon at patreon.com/KFSHOW Kibbe, Corndog, and the Bern! Dale Earnhardt Jr. sits down with a legendary figure behind the scenes of motorsports, longtime car owner and sponsor Mike Curb. After falling in love with motorsports at an early age through the pages of Motor Trend and National Speed Sport News, Mike made the acquaintance of Cary Agajanian at an early age and began taking in races at the famed Ascot Park. Mike pursued an interest in music and when a song he wrote became a jingle for Honda, he dropped out of college and pursued commercial soundtracking full time. Mike simultaneously developed a recording company and a career in politics at the suggestion of Ronald Reagan, but his love for auto racing remained tried and true. He entered business with Agajanian owning local sprint cars, and the Curb-Agajanian Performance Group was born.Mike's entry into involvement in NASCAR is a fascinating tale that stems from longtime NASCAR executive Les Richter serving as a chairman on his campaign for Lieutenant Governor of California. At Les' request, Mike and his wife attended the 1980 Cup season opener at Riverside as Grand Marshall and it was there that he was propositioned with the idea of becoming a sponsor for Dale Earnhardt. Mike also explains the events that lead to Curb Racing fielding a car for Richard Petty in 1984 and how the famed picture of Ronald Reagan landing at the Daytona 500 came to be. The interview covers Mike's vast involvement in racing today, which includes co-ownership of NASCAR Truck championship winner Ty Majeski, his relationship with Ronald Reagan and his career in the music industry.
