While love and science don't often go hand-in-hand, this week, in celebration of Valentine's Day, both of our stories are about finding love using scientific methods. Part 1: After Tony Dahlman plucks up the courage to ask out a fellow statistician, he consults the Survey Administration Manual for guidance on how to construct the perfect date. Part 2: When engineering student Heather Monigan asks liberal arts major Michael Berger on a date he's completely unaware that she's interested in him. Tony Dahlman is a numbers guy. He has spent nineteen years as a statistician for the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Tony is a native Minnesotan who enjoys running, biking, public speaking, college football, and is obsessed with State Fairs. A few years ago he got hooked on storytelling and has told stories with Story District in Washington, DC, the Des Moines Storyteller's Project, TellersBridge in Cedar Rapids, IA, and The Moth in Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN. Tony lives with his wife in Des Moines, Iowa. Heather Monigan is a resilient lady with a sharp wit who has learned to laugh in the face of adversity. Her hobbies include staying happily married, keeping two teens alive and spontaneous home remodels. In her spare time, she is an Engineering Executive in the semiconductor industry for over 24 years and active in the tech community. She currently serves as Chair of the IEEE Phoenix Section and is the Phoenix Section's International Development Lead for Engineers Without Borders. Heather also serves on the Grand Canyon University President's STEM Advisory Board and the GCU Engineering Advisory Council. She is an adjunct engineering professor for Grand Canyon University. Ms. Monigan holds an MBA and BSCE and never got the memo to “relax”. Michael is married to Heather Monigan, which is what got him this gig. He also considers that his greatest achievement. Like most everyone else out in Phoenix he is an ex-Midwesterner, hailing from Dayton, Ohio. Since moving to Phoenix in 2004 he acquired a son, a daughter, a doctorate, and too many cats. Since his parents were both in education he decided to start his career there and never left, now working as the Dean of the College of Doctoral Studies for Grand Canyon University. In his limited free time he enjoys playing games of all kinds, the odd bit of creative writing, working out, and attempting ridiculous obstacle course races. Michael doesn't mind public speaking but has difficulty memorizing scripts. Hopefully this won't be a problem for Heather. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Join Museum of the Bible as we discuss archaeology and the New Testament with Dr. Ben Witherington, Amos Professor of New Testament for Doctoral Studies at Asbury Theological Seminary.
In my conversation with New Testament Professor, Dr. Ben Witherington III, I ask Dr. Witherington about his journey into scholarship, about the decline of biblical literacy in the west and about some of Jesus' teachings on money and the places where Christians struggle to live those teachings out. It was a pleasure to talk Dr. Witherington and I hope now that you are both as challenged and encouraged in your listening to this conversation as I was in having it. Dr. Ben Witherington III is Amos Professor of New Testament for Doctoral Studies at Asbury Theological Seminary and on the doctoral faculty at St. Andrews University in Scotland. Witherington has also taught at Ashland Theological Seminary, Vanderbilt University, Duke Divinity School and Gordon-Conwell. He has written over sixty books, including The Jesus Quest and The Paul Quest, both of which were selected as top biblical studies works by Christianity Today. He also writes for many church and scholarly publications, and is a frequent contributor to the Patheos website.
Dr. Ben Witherington III argues passionately against burnishing the nativity stories of Luke and Matthew with unfounded speculation and mistranslations. He gives particular attention to the story of Jesus' birth in Luke 2:7. Prof. Witherington is the Jean R. Amos Professor of New Testament for Doctoral Studies at Asbury Theological Seminary and is an emeritus professor of New Testament at St. Andrews University, Scotland. He has published widely including commentaries on every book of the New Testament. Two of his books won the Christianity Today annual top biblical studies book award: The Jesus Quest: The Third Search for the Jew of Nazareth and The Paul Quest: The Renewed Search for the Jew of Tarsus. His Biblical Theology; The Convergence of the Canon (Cambridge) won the Prose Prize National Book of the Year award in 2020 for books in religion and philosophy. What doctoral degree is right for you?I see you. On facebook, asking everyone what Doctoral program is best. I also see you confused about the difference between a DAOM program and a DACM program. I invited Phil Settels on today to clear the air. In today's episode we are going to talk about: The differences between the DAOM and DACM programs. Why the DAOM is considered the “pinnacle” degree. Reasons you may want to choose the DAOM if you are a new practitioner. Why the DACM even came about. What may or may not be in your best interest with regards to both programs. Phil gives a broad overview of the DAOM program at ACCHS. Today's GuestPHIL SETTELS DAOM, LAC., Dean of Doctoral Studies at ACCHS Phil Settels graduated from ACCHS in 2011. Early on in his engagement with Chinese Medicine, Phil had the opportunity to study with several amazing Shanghan Lun teachers, including Dr. Arnaud Verluys, Dr. Huang Huang and Dr. Suzanne Robidoux. Phil uses Classical Formulas almost exclusively in his own practice and in his teaching. Phil was brought in to design the curriculum of the ACCHS DAOM program which started in 2017, and he is currently the Dean of Academics. This program was guided by the ideal of what would best serve clinicians while honoring both the roots of the medicine and its development over time, and empowering graduates to be stewards of Chinese Medicine. The program has a dual focus on Classical Chinese Herbalism as well as Orthopedics and Pain Management, with the goal that graduates have increased skill and confidence to treat any patient who walks through their door, whether their condition reflects an internal or a musculoskeletal dysfunction. Hello Dear listeners, I am happy to announce a new podcast episode on the topic “Self-care skills for people with autism spectrum disorder (ASD)” with an occupational therapist and a university professor Dr. Aditi Mehra. Dr. Aditi Mehra graduated with a bachelor's in occupational therapy, from Western Michigan University in 1998 and has a Doctorate in Health Sciences from Midwestern University in Illinois. She has practiced as a pediatric OT for the past 20+ years in various settings: early Intervention, hand therapy, inpatient/outpatient rehabilitation and school-settings. During her Doctoral Studies, Dr. Mehra also pursued a certification in Applied Behavior Analysis to improve and enhance collaboration within multidisciplinary teams. Once she delved deeper into this branch of Psychology, Dr. Mehra uncovered Fit Learning, an academic program based on the principles of Precision Teaching designed to build fluency and address all differences in learning (Executive Functioning, ADHD etc.). Dr. Mehra is currently the Director of Fit Learning Labs in Chicago, and London. She continues to practice OT in the school setting, hosts a YouTube channel and is also an adjunct professor at Elmhurst University. Her passion is rooted in using simple data collection process to make more progress and save time and can be found on her website: https://dradititheot.com/ We made our discussion practical and discussed different cases from our everyday practice. Thus, what we have discussed: what are self-care skills and what factors can influence the participation in these activities among people with ASD, the sensory issues and the importance of adapting to some sensory stimuli or modifying the environment to minimize the possibility of sensory overload, different examples from our practice about dressing, washing, toileting skills and difficulties parents can face raising a child with ASD, the transition from childhood to adulthood, etc. Participating in self-care activities is an important part of our life. The independence and confidence improve our quality of life and affect our self-esteem. The independent functioning in these activities can be limited among people with ASD due to a range of factors. Consequently, knowing these factors, we can analyze the situation and support people with ASD. I would be delighted if you could find some answers to your questions. Thank you for attention!

Today's episode is with conceptual artist, Hank Willis Thomas. Hailing from the mean streets of Plainfield, NJ… That's a joke, by the way,. Hank's body of work explores themes related to perspective, identity, commodity, media, and popular culture, Hank is one of the most celebrated artists of his generation. The son of musician and physicist Hank Thomas, and artist, photographer, historian, curator and educator, Deborah Willis, one could say that art runs though Hanks's veins. Growing up amongst the stacks of Harlem's Schomburg Library, where his mother served as curator of photographs and as exhibition coordinator, his exposure to the power of images began at an early age. He went on to study photography and Africana Studies at New York University and later received his masters of fine arts in Photography at California College of the Arts, but it was the blunt force of family tragedy that spurred a turning point in his career; all of a sudden, the photographic frame could no longer contain everything he wanted to say. The execution-style murder of his cousin and best friend, Songha Willis while visiting family over the holidays ripped the Willis family apart, and an image he took of his grieving family, became one of his signature works, titled “Priceless”. Mimicking the popular MasterCard ads of the era, it crystallizes Hank's artistic lens, the combined effects of consumerism, capitalism, advertising, and their impact on Black life in America. His work has been exhibited the world over, and is held in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, The Guggenheim, The Whitney Museum, Brooklyn Museum… you get the idea. He's a recipient of the Gordon Parks Foundation Fellowship and The Guggenheim Fellowship, amongst others, and holds honorary doctorates from the Maryland Institute of Art, and the Institute for Doctoral Studies in the Visual Arts. In today's episode, we discuss the power images hold, the importance of family and especially grandmothers, the illusion of separation, and the invention of race in United States. This is one of those episodes you'll want to listen to again and again, and if you find this content valuable, be sure to leave us a review over on Apple Podcasts and shout us out over on Instagram at @blackimagination, we love love love to hear from you. In this episode, we are joined by Dr. Niyati Parekh, an Associate Professor of Public Health Nutrition here at NYU GPH and the Executive Director of Doctoral Studies, along with Dr. Filippa Juul a current Assistant Professor Faculty/Fellow who obtained her Ph.D. in Public Health from GPH with a concentration in Epidemiology in 2020. Both Niyati and Filippa worked on a widely-circulated study on the harmful effects of Ultra-Processed Foods and their association with health risks, especially cardiovascular disease. The study, which had media coverage across several media outlets and was published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, identifies as a modifiable risk factor in the prevention of cardiovascular disease and found that higher consumption of ultra-processed foods is associated with an increased risk of CVD incidence and mortality. Dr. Parekh and Dr. Juul also provide insight into the global perspective of this issue and what other countries are doing to address concerns of health and nutrition, along with what types of foods are considered “ultra-processed” and what ways we can best preserve our health. On today's episode of the Cohort Sistas Podcast, assistant professor at NYU, Dr. Chantal Hailey emphasizes the game-changing role of peer and senior support in doctoral studies. We dive into the role of racial preference, safety and perceived safety in New York. We begin our conversation by touching on the role of race, safety and racialized safety in school choices. Dr. Hailey tells the story of how attending a predominantly white private school piqued her interest in sociological dynamics at a young age. She goes on to tell us about her own journey with school selection and how she experienced NYU's focus on sociology as a whole as opposed to sharing knowledge solely to recruit her into their program was a big selling point for them as an institution. Dr. Hailey shares with us that taking time off between undergraduate and doctoral studies enabled her to develop the confidence she needed to succeed. Next, she shares with us some of the benefits of building strong relationships with students further along in their academic journey than she was. She tells us about the element of competition and the importance of protecting your ideas and gets real about the rollercoaster of highs and lows involved in grad school. We talk about NYU's funding structure, the funding process and the importance of asking questions and allowing people to challenge you. Tune in for some hard-won pearls of wisdom to guide and inspire your doctoral journey.Connect with Dr. Chantal Hailey on Dr. Chantal Hailey, LinkedIn, Instagram, and Twitter. If you are a Black woman interested in joining the Cohort Sistas community or you're looking for more information on how to support or partner with Cohort Sistas, please visit our site at www.cohortsistas.com.Find us on Twitter and Instagram, and don't forget to follow the Cohort Sistas podcast, rate, and leave us a quick review wherever you're listening.

Ben Witherington, Amos Professor of New Testament for Doctoral Studies at Asbury Theological Seminary, joins the show to discuss his long-running blog "The Bible and Culture." Dr. Witherington shares his perspective on how Christians should appreciate culture critically and engage in creating culture from a biblical worldview.
We are often astonished to read or hear in the news about a kid who grabs a classmate's hair, or snatches food from their tray, or even kicks their teacher. The average person might focus on the obvious disrespectful and unacceptable in-school behaviors. However, we will be missing point if we think that kids should come to school already fully knowing how to behave “properly”. Instead, we need to receive them with open arms, find out what they can do, and provide them with the necessary help to teach them what they don't yet know.On this episode, Dr. Cheryl Rice, a Behavior Intervention Specialist and a Certified Instructor of Mindset Non-violent Crisis Intervention (De-escalation) Training for Educator shares what's at the heart of meeting kids where they are in order to advance educator-learner interactions to shape nurturing learning communities. About Cheryl RiceCheryl Rice has been a Special Education Teacher for over 20 years.
