Episode Description: In this deeply moving and profoundly insightful episode, Amy Wheeler welcomes yoga therapist, author, and pelvic health expert Cheri Dostal Ryba to share her personal story of healing, embodiment, and reclamation. Cheri's journey touches on intergenerational trauma, family estrangement, caregiving for a parent in crisis, and the body's remarkable wisdom in processing, protecting, and ultimately guiding us toward healing.Cheri vulnerably recounts the transformative chapter of her life that unfolded after her family returned to Wisconsin, just as her book, Pelvic Yoga Therapy for the Whole Woman, was released. Amid navigating her family's unraveling, Cheri found herself in the heart of her own embodied healing journey — trusting the intelligence of her body, allowing grief to move through her, and reclaiming her own sense of safety, belonging, and joy. This conversation is a testament to the power of somatic practice, ancestral healing, and trusting the subtle (and not-so-subtle) signals our bodies give us, even when our minds may not yet have words for the story. Please note: This episode touches on sensitive topics, including family trauma, suicide attempts, and intergenerational wounding. While the conversation is approached with compassion and care, we advise listener discretion, particularly if you are listening with children or if these topics are personally triggering.Topics Covered:How yoga, breathwork, and mantra supported Cheri's healing processThe wisdom of the body in revealing truth — even before the mind catches upGrieving necessary endings and choosing healthy boundaries with familyThe role of the pelvis in personal power, belonging, and embodied wholenessHow yoga therapy can support pelvic health, trauma recovery, and personal reclamationCheri's upcoming Pelvic Yoga Book Summit – May 2-3, 2025Quotes from the Episode: "Sensitivity is the privilege and responsibility of remembering." — Toko-pa Turner "Healing is living — fiercely committing to the present moment." — Cheri Dostal RybaResources Mentioned:Book: Pelvic Yoga Therapy for the Whole Woman: A Professional Guide by Cheri Dostal RybaEvent: Pelvic Yoga Book Summit - May 2-3, 2025 (Registration opens by April 4, 2025)Book Mentioned by Amy: Necessary Endings by Dr. Henry CloudMantra Discussed: Mahā Mṛtyuñjaya Mantra – exploring its symbolism of effortless release and surrenderAbout Cheri Dostal Ryba: Cheri is a yoga therapist, pelvic health specialist, somatic educator, and author. In this episode of The Yoga Therapy Hour, host Amy Wheeler welcomes Jenna Schissel, a yoga therapist based in Des Moines, Iowa, who brings a deeply personal and integrative perspective to the field. Jenna shares her journey of self-discovery, shaped by her experiences with social anxiety and introversion. She discusses how yoga became a natural path for inner healing, providing her with a structured way to cultivate self-awareness, resilience, and confidence.Rather than focusing on symptom management or pathology, Jenna approaches yoga therapy through the lens of salutogenesis—the process of fostering well-being rather than merely preventing or treating illness. She and Amy explore how yoga therapy facilitates whole-person healing, supporting individuals in cultivating inner stability, self-regulation, and a sense of personal agency. While Jenna also maintains a separate psychotherapy practice specializing in trauma and ketamine-assisted therapy, this conversation focuses on the role of yoga therapy in personal transformation, embodiment, and nervous system coherence, rather than trauma treatment.Key Topics Discussed in This Episode:Jenna's Personal Journey with Yoga – How yoga provided Jenna with a framework to understand and navigate her experiences with social anxiety and introversion. She reflects on the ways that movement, breathwork, and meditation helped her shift from internal self-doubt to self-trust and connection with others.Yoga Therapy as a Path to Whole-Person Healing – Jenna and Amy discuss how yoga therapy facilitates salutogenesis, supporting individuals in building resilience, internal balance, and long-term well-being. They highlight the importance of seeing yoga therapy as a process of self-cultivation rather than symptom reduction. The Role of Self-Awareness in the Healing Process – Jenna explains how self-awareness practices, such as breath observation, mindful movement, and reflective inquiry, serve as fundamental tools in yoga therapy. These practices allow individuals to tune into their internal states and develop a more compassionate and attuned relationship with themselves.Working with the Nervous System in Yoga Therapy – The conversation explores how yoga therapy supports autonomic regulation, helping individuals transition from chronic stress patterns to a more balanced and responsive state. Jenna shares insights on how simple breath and movement techniques can be applied in daily life to foster internal steadiness. The Interplay Between Personal Practice and Professional Work – Jenna reflects on how her personal experiences inform her work as a yoga therapist. She discusses the importance of ongoing self-practice, not only for maintaining professional integrity but also for deepening her understanding of the mind-body connection.Yoga Therapy vs. Psychotherapy: Clarifying the Distinction – While Jenna also works as a psychotherapist, she explains the clear distinctions between her yoga therapy practice and her clinical work. Yoga therapy offers a non-pathologizing, strength-based approach to personal growth, while psychotherapy serves a different role in addressing clinical concerns. This conversation helps clarify how yoga therapy can complement but is not a substitute for mental health treatment. The Power of Introversion in Yoga Therapy – Jenna discusses the unique strengths that introverts bring to both yoga practice and teaching. She and Amy explore how introversion can be reframed as a gift, allowing for deeper self-reflection, insight, and meaningful connection.Connect with Jenna & AmyJenna SchisselBased in Des Moines, Iowa[Insert Jenna's website: https://www.jennaschisseltherapist.com/Amy Wheeler & Optimal StateWebsite: www.TheOptimalState.com Come join us at Maryland University of Integrative Health (MUIH) for our Signature Programs starting in Fall 2025. In this episode, Dr. Evan M. Rabinowitz, the founder of the Yao Shan Center for Chinese Medicine in Washington, DC, joins us for a conversation about acupuncture for menopause symptom treatment relief, the importance of treatment for the individual, how the body is an ecosystem and how holistic & Eastern medicine focus on addressing and balancing the entire system rather than just a single problematic issue.Acupuncture as a medical practice has existed for thousands of years and it used to be the predominant healing practice, yet the Western world still sees it as “alternative medicine.” Eastern medical practice is more than just sticking needles and mixing herbs together. Underneath lies a worldview that all living things are connected and that everything has its own course and cycle. This perspective brings a holistic approach to health and medicine, recognizing that changes in one part of the body or the external environment can cause seemingly unrelated symptoms. Dr. Rabinowitz has been in clinical practice for over 25 years, is a professor at Daoist Traditions College of Chinese Medical Arts in Asheville, NC and a lecturer at Georgetown University School of Medicine's Integrative Medicine Program in Washington, DC. He's the former Director of Chinese Herbal Medicine at the Maryland University of Integrative Health (MUIH), where he helped create the University's Masters and Doctorate programs in East Asian Medicine during his eight-year tenure. He also taught and supervised Chinese herbal medicine at the Academy for Five Element Acupuncture in Gainesville, FL. He is a graduate of the George Washington University (B.A.), Traditional Acupuncture Institute (M.Ac.) and Maryland University of Integrative Health (D.Ac.). Dr. Rabinowitz maintains an active teaching schedule, offering continuing education for practitioners online and in-person across the US and internationally.Dr. Rabinowitz's goal is to see each person as unique and whole, and offer to them individualized, compassionate care for both chronic and acute pain. He has specialty training in gynecology seeing a broad range conditions throughout the lifecycle, including painful or irregular periods, fibroids and cysts (including PCOS), endometriosis and menopause related issues. In this episode, Dr. Rabinowitz discusses:The history and definition of acupunctureEastern medicine's approach to and treatment options for menopauseUnderstanding menopause from a holistic, empowering perspectiveFinding and receiving individualized treatment by a qualified, licensed practitionerDr. Rabinowitz also shares an empowering perspective for women: since puberty, our bodies have been working to sustain and bring new life. With menopause, our body's energies and systems shift to sustain and nourish just our own life. This is an important and significant time for a woman, and there's a unique power that comes with it.Tune in to this enlightening episode to gain a deeper understanding of acupuncture and how Eastern medicine offers a holistic, empowering approach to managing menopause and overall health.Connect with Dr. Evan M. We are in the midst of spring and the pollen is in the air. We are all thinking about our allergies at this time of year. Today, Lena DeGloma of Red Moon Wellness in Brooklyn joins us to discuss all things related to supporting your body, managing allergy symptoms, and what you can use as an alternative to over-the-counter and prescription drugs. The allergic symptoms are like the tip of an iceberg, where you have this cumulative effect. Even if you can identify that you are allergic to something, you may not necessarily be symptomatically allergic to that thing alone. There might be something under the surface that is causing that reaction. In an inflammatory state, it is easy for other things you do to cause a flare-up, even if it's not the item itself. Things like sleep, stress and the microbiome are so critical to keep functioning all year round because when we think about allergies. They have a cumulative effect. Then there is the threshold, which is like your symptom threshold. So many of us live just under the symptom threshold all year round with the food, stress, and environmental factors that are in our life every day. Herbalism is based on the connection between nature and the body. Many of the things our bodies need are created by plants. We can easily incorporate simple herbalism into our daily lives with chickweed, turmeric, and ginger. We also have great herbal medicine in our kitchens, things that will target allergies. Here are a few plants that could help with your allergies: CHAMOMILE Have your allergies affect your eyes. Itchy, red, irritated, watery eyes are so annoying. To relieve this symptom, grab those camomile tea bags you have in your cupboard. Steep them and let them cool. Put them right on your eyes, as little mini eye compresses. Also, drinking for inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract.THYMEWe can also find dried thyme in our kitchens. For allergy symptoms, you can also inhale the essential oil mixed with eucalyptus if you have it. This helps with congestion. CALENDULAAdd a few drops of calendula oil that can help you find relief during an allergy flare. Using dried flowers, pop them into a jar and pour olive oil or coconut oil over the top to create your own oils. Add enough to cover all of the plant matter in the jar. Ideally, you want to have at least an inch of oil over the surface, so you don't have any exposed parts.Place it in a sunny window or a nice warm place. It will get infused with the warmth of the sun. Tip the head back and place one to three drops per nostril with the head tipped back. The drops will be dripping up into the nose and can also help if you get chronic sinus infections. I'll do the same for them. Chronic sinusitis can be caused by dryness, allergies, or by chronic fungi. MEET LENALena is the founder and director of Red Moon Wellness in Park Slope, Brooklyn. Ira Pastor, ideaXme life sciences ambassador and founder of Bioquark, interviews Dr. Hamed Faridi, Chief Science Officer of McCormick. Ira Pastor comments: Many scientists believe that we have only touched the surface with what the botanical world, and its unique ways to naturally manufacture complex, phyto-chemical cocktails, with novel bio-activities, has to teach us. Additionally, while we all may keep our pharmaceuticals, and dietary supplements, and related health products, tucked away within our medicine cabinets, we tend to forget about that other cabinet of health that we all have in our homes, which is a treasure trove of phyto-medicinal possibilities - the spice cabinet. Dr. Hamed Faridi is the Chief Science Officer Emeritus, McCormick & Company, the world's largest spice company (HQ - Maryland USA), a Fortune 1000 company, with 11,700 employees, which manufactures, markets, and distributes spices, seasoning mixes, condiments, and other flavoring products for the industrial, restaurant, institutional, and home markets. A renowned food industry leader, Dr. Faridi has led a global team of 500+ scientists responsible for thought leadership, scientific research, product development, health & wellness, and sustainability to support the global businesses of McCormick. Dr. Faridi has been referred to as the “voice of science” for McCormick & Company and advises the company’s CEO, and senior executives on strategic corporate initiatives such as technology investment and potential M&As and serves on several business councils. Under his leadership, McCormick’s R&D program has been transformed and is rated by investors and global customers as one of the most innovative in the industry. His science-based approach to “Flavorful Healthy Eating” is recognized as a groundbreaking platform for improving public health. His vision led to the formation of the McCormick Science Institute (MSI) as a research-driven organization to advance scientific understanding of the potential health benefits of culinary spices and herbs. This research prompted a close partnership with US Departments of Agriculture (USDA), Health and Human Services (HHS) and the White House, to help in the implementation of the 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans. In 2013, in partnership with IBM, he initiated the creation of an Artificial Intelligence (AI) platform for food and flavor product development with the potential to change the course of the industry and enhance the universal eating experience of consumers around the world, by tapping in on over 40 years of sensory, culinary, chemistry and scientific data collected by McCormick R&D scientists in 14 countries. He has published six books and dozens of scientific articles in food science and technology, and has been a guest lecturer at conferences and research institutions in 22 countries. He has also served on several boards of professional and trade associations in the U.S. and Europe. Mast Cell Activation Syndrome encompasses a consortium of imbalances in the body that results in suffering from sensitivities to foods, chemicals, and environmental triggers. These sensitivities seem to be mediated by over release of histamine and other inflammatory mediators by mast cells. The consequences are vast including digestive, neurologic, immune, dermatologic, endocrine , musculoskelatal, and psychological impact. This episode brings in an expert in this area Dr. Jessica Pizano to help us understand this complex scenario that often gets missed clinically or misdiagnosed leaving people suffering with out answers. About our guest. Dr. Jessica Pizano graduated with honors from the University of Bridgeport's functional nutrition master's program. She continued her education at Maryland University of Integrative Health (MUIH) where she graduated with a Doctor of Clinical Nutrition. During her years in academia, she became very interested in working with those with rare diseases. The mantra for rare disease sufferers around the world is "When you hear hoof beats, think zebra's, not horses. This is, of course, the opposite of what has been taught in medical schools. Dr. Pizano is also the owner of Mast Cell Advanced Diagnostics where she sees patients with mast cell activation disorders and other rare diseases. The practice provides patients with a comprehensive approach to rare disorders incorporating nutrition, nutritional genomics, metabolomics, neural retraining, and medical management. Her goal is to provide a comprehensive care solution for patients helping bridge the gap in care that these patients typically face. Dr. Pizano works very closely with some of the top doctors treating mast cell activation syndrome, Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, immunodeficiency disorders, familial alpha hypertryptasemia, and autoimmune small fiber polyneuropathy. In addition to seeing patients from around the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom, she also frequently provides support to physicians working with these rare diseases via practitioner education and consults. In addition to the conditions listed above, Dr. Pizano has worked with multiple chemical sensitivities, Lyme disease, biotoxin illness, mood disorders, autism, autoimmune diseases, rare genetic deletions, mitochondrial disorders and other diseases. Along with her business partner Dr. Chrissie Williamson, Dr. Pizano is the co-owner of SNPed, a webinar-based series to educate practitioners in nutritional genomics and systems medicine. She has developed course work at the master's level at MUIH in nutritional genomic counseling, has published a series of peer-reviewed journal articles on the microbiome and contributed two chapters on nutritional genomics in a graduate level nutrition textbook. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/adam-rinde/support

Welcome back to our weekend Cabral HouseCall shows! This is where we answer our community's wellness, weight loss, and anti-aging questions to help people get back on track! Check out today's questions: Meghan: Hi Dr. Cabral- I love listening to your podcasts while I work out, especially the recent ones on Ayurveda. They keep me motivated and excited to make healthy choices throughout my week. I recently enjoyed your podcast on the 7 foods you eat daily and can't live without. Your discussions on food have helped me fine tune my diet (like eating oats and berries more frequently!). In your podcast you mentioned that you'd like to hear if there was something your listeners eat on a regular basis and can't live without. I eat a granny smith apple almost everyday. I'm prone to constipation so it's really important that I get the right type and amount of fiber everyday. I don't know what it is about an apple but it truly does keep the doctor away for me! That along with plenty of water of course. I'm curious to know your thoughts on that since I haven't heard you talk much about the benefits of apples (I recently started listening within the last few months). Is it merely the fiber content or something else too? Or maybe I just found something that works well for my body! Misty: Hello! I’ve been listening to Stephen Cabral’s podcasts and I applied in October to go to school for integrative health but I’m nervous that the school is so new that I may not get the education I need. I am a registered nurse with a background in Intensive Care and post recovery from surgical procedures. I ultimately want to own my own health “center” with nutrition classes (for profit & community volunteer education for the less affluent), include a “fast food” section for healthy dieters, exercise center (local teachers for yoga/weight lifting/etc), and a homeopathy shop with local vendor items and aromatherapy. I am, as of now, going to Maryland University of Integrative Health (MUIH) for the Masters in Nutrition and Integrative Health. Do you or Stephen know of this school? It’s regionally accredited but I want to make sure I am getting what I pay for, it’s pretty expensive. They over post graduate certifications in aromatherapy, Chinese medicine, and yoga which I intend to obtain when I’m done. Please help! I need some advice. Sincerely, Misty Andrea: Hello! quick question! I started the SEED CYCLING that Dr. Cabral mentioned and advised. I was wondering how long I could expect to do the cycling before seeing changes in my menstrual cycle...? I know it depends on the person and that there are too many variables to conclude as to when any one woman will see its effects- but I am a 26yr old female, 130lbs, very healthy other than having no menstrual period for 2yrs. I have done the cycling for one month thus far and will continue it indefinitely. Any answers would be helpful! I'm grateful for your all!!!! Thank you in advance, Andrea Darrow: Hey. I am a firefighter working shifts day and night. I am reading your "A Man's Guide To Muscle and Strength". Great book. I am a vata pitta body type, more vata. Was wondering how I should go about training given my work schedule. Sometimes we have major calls that calls for hours of strenuous work in smoke filled environments. Or nights where we're out working. Should I still try to train on those days or count that as a strength day. I've friends I train with in the construction industry who are working hard everyday who have similar concerns. Keep up good work. Also what do you recommend if one has been briefly exposed to smoke inhalation. What immediate measures he can do to minimise any potential damage? Thank you. Halle: Hi! Was just looking to see if there was a podcast from you guys about acid reflux and natural ways to diminish the symptoms. Thanks! Tyffany: I'm on day 7 of the 21-day Detox and had a failed lunch. I am in the military and had only dining hall fare to choose from. Will picking up right where I left off be ok or do I need to do something special to start over? Laura: Hi Dr. Cabral! I’m scheduled to have double jaw surgery (4-6 hours procedure) at the end of February 2019. I’ll have finished your CBO protocol by the end of January 2019 and will do your CBO Finisher Heal & Seal for one month before my surgery. I have some questions. 1. What would you recommend I do before my surgery in order to prepare I am ready? Any supplements I should be taking or natural remedies? I’ll be on your CBO Finisher but is there anything else I should incorporate? 2. For this surgery, I will be prescribed a lot of medication. I have to use an anti-nausea patch and Zofran (anti-nausea medication) before/during surgery. Afterwards, I know FOR SURE I will have to take antibiotics, nasal sprays (like Afrin, Simple Saline Spray, Decongestion Spray) and then possibly Oxycodone, Ibuprofen, Prescription Joint Medication, Mucinex, Tylenol, and Benadryl. As you can see a lot of medication! What do you recommend I do after surgery so that I can make sure my gut isn’t completely ruined after going through your whole CBO protocol? What supplements of yours do you recommend? 3. Any supplements/natural remedies you also recommend after surgery to help heal or to help with pain? I want to try and use as little medication as possible, but I just don’t know how bad I’m going to feel after. Just so you know, I’ll have to be on an all liquid diet for 10 weeks after surgery! Thanks so much for all you do! Really appreciate it! Darrel: Hey Dr. Cabral. I am of African descent and have to shave my face regularly. I do so using a depilatory shaving powder called SoftSheen-Carson Magic. Listening your podcasts and reading Rain Barrel Effect has me wondering whether there are any major toxic drawbacks from using it. Searches on EWG website proved futile. If it is negative can you suggest alternative options. I cannot use razors because they cause ingrown hairs. Thank you, keep up great work.
