Want to start running, but don't know where to start? Or maybe you want to get back into it after a few years? Desiree is talking with physiotherapist Nick Lo about his fresh approach to running that isn't about metrics or complicated programs. It's time to run just for the feel of it. Nick is the co-owner of Run As You Are, a local run specialty shop as well as the co-founder of Run Ready, a new software tool that uses physiotherapy to help you run your best.  The conversation starts with Nick's journey as an entrepreneur that started with him working alongside his dad's business and then we shift into Nick as running guru: urging us to chill out and just get out the door…with plenty of motivation and sage advice on how to do it. About Nick Lo: Nick is a father of one, soon to be two. He's been a Physiotherapist since 2006, and juggled business and entrepreneurship for the last decade plus. Nick's first business was Physio Room, which opened its first location in 2011, and a second location in 2015. By 2017, he joined Myodetox as Chief Operating Officer, helping scale business operations across Vancouver, Toronto, and Los Angeles. In 2021, Nick's Vancouver clinics were acquired by Myodetox, and he joined Vancouver Running Company. Since then, they've rebranded to RunAsYouAre, moved to West 4th, and are currently in the process of launching a healthy running brand called RunReady. On this episode we chat about: Nick's evolving path as a physiotherapist, an entrepreneur and a runner What Nick has learned about running a business How running is different from every single sport on the planet Running for the mind  What you should actually focus on instead of pace Tips for brand new runners and returning runners Three physical factors for injury free runs How Run Ready can support runners with customized advice The most important thing when you're buying your shoes Mindset Shift: stretching vs movement prep Support the Pod! Build a strong, resilient body with Andrew Sabarre

Whether you're 22 or 62, we all have one thing in common: inhabiting a physical body without which we could not live, work or even experience the sights, tastes and sounds of life. And yet, most of us walk around as if our body is an afterthought: nothing more than a fleshy carrying case for our brains…that is, of course, until our bodies decide to assert themselves in an injury or disease state. Even though I'm in my early forties, I notice it. Like how I get sore after a workout I didn't think would be that hard. Or how I can sleep funny and all of a sudden my hip is wonky. Or that - of all things - it seems like I barely have the grip strength to open up a jar of Rao's pasta sauce. And I am soooooo not okay with it. I want to do more, not less. Run more, live more, especially now that I'm finally through the young kids phase and actually have a bit of time for myself. I don't want my physical form to get in the way of living the next 60 years. So I was excited to talk to physiotherapist Andrew Sabarre about the actual science of movement, and caring for our bodies in a way that had nothing to do with weight - or even “crushing your goals” - but about being able to inhabit our bodies with ease and function as we get older. This episode is for everyone who wants to build an appreciation of what the body actually is…and what it means to take good care of it. You don't need to be an athlete to benefit from the knowledge Andrew drops; in fact, it's probably the most transformative for those of us who aren't! I learned so much in this one. About Andrew Sabarre: Andrew Sabarre is a physiotherapist with over 20 years of experience. He is a strength and conditioning specialist, the former Chief Clinical Officer of Myodetox as well as a CrossFit coach, dad and (by his description) reluctant runner…just in case you think super fit people always love it too. On this episode we chat about: What does a physiotherapist actually do? How Andrew's mom was instrumental in him becoming a physio How long it takes your muscles to atrophy when you're inactive Why bone load is critical to maintaining their strength Desiree's random injury that diagnosed a systemic issue from pregnancy she didn't know she had What strength training actually does the for the body Why you need functional exercise for optimal mobility The surprising amount of injuries that come from this everyday chore How to determine the ache of getting stronger vs the pain of harming yourself The exact recommended amount of exercise to maintain health Support the Pod! Nick Lo is an entrepreneur to his core, with an introspective nature that that is sometimes atypical of a hard-driving polymath hustler. He's accomplished, no doubt: a physiotherapist, founder of Physio Room, part of the original Myodetox team (formerly COO and now a senior advisor), cofounder of web3 creative studio Oddfutur3, and cofounder of global running community & platform Run As You Are (RAYA).He was born and raised in East Vancouver, the younger of two sons to immigrant Chinese parents. His father and uncles owned and operated a grocery store in the West End, where Nick spent weekends and summers working there. It's easy to see where his entrepreneurial spirit comes from—his hardworking father never took vacation and spent any time-off taking him to other grocery stores to look at pricing and packaging. Nick did his Bachelor of Science at the University of British Columbia, then completed a Master in Physiotherapy in 2006. Five years later, he founded Physio Room and began blazing his path in the health & well-being space. In this conversation, we explore how love was expressed in his family; what the time he spent as a child with his father meant to him; his introverted nature; how entrepreneurship & selling your vision can be a lonely road; one's personal brand in a performative culture; his human-centred approach to physiotherapy; why he entered web3 and what he's observing about the space; the things he loves about running and the global community around it; the one things he loves about watching his son develop into a little human; loving words for his father; and much more. Please enjoy this very personal conversation with the genuinely kind, forward-thinking, and self-reflective Nick Lo. SHOW NOTES I met Dr. Jen Esquer at a seminar in 2018... not being too much of an Instagram junkie, someone in the course said, “Hey! Doc Jen Fit is here!” After looking into what Dr. Jen is all about, I had to have her on the podcast for an interview. The interesting part about her content to me is that it’s laid out in a very customer friendly way with great illustrations and it’s very up to date stuff. Wat I mean my that is, that she’s able to take some highly relevant information and break it down into lay terms… not just the old stuff from 20 years ago. Anyone can tell at patient to lay on a foam roller right? Jen Esquer is a Doctor of Physical Therapy, who was able to successfully build a private practice with cash paying, highly motivated clients all through giving awesome information through Instagram. Find out how she did it in this podcast interview. SHOW NOTES: https://www.p2sportscare.com/docjenfit-jen-esquer-instagram/ Website: https://www.docjenfit.com/ Social Medias: IG: @docjenfit Quotes: We just need to talk to our audience I provided 2.5 years of educational content before I launched Also long as people can see what you’re doing (in video) you’re fine Vertical video is always better then horizontal (on IG) It’s always the videos you don’t expect to do well, that do well Dr. Jen Esquer Bio: "The best way I like to explain myself, is that I am a MOVER! I have been active since I was a young child, falling in love at an early age with gymnastics and competing for 9 years. After quitting at age 16, I competed in track and field (pole vault and triple jump) and danced. Though I sustained minor injuries, including a thumb fracture, sprained ankles, and pulled muscles, I never once went to a physical therapist. Yet, I loved anything having to do with anatomy, physiology, and without knowing for sure whether physical therapy would be my path, I decided to study Kinesiology at California State University, Fullerton. While I coached gymnastics for 3 years, I found myself constantly asking, “Why am I taping an ankle? What is truly the issue and how can I help further?” I was seeking more! I was fortunate enough to meet someone teaching a Pilates Bootcamp and quickly fell in love with the specificity of body movement. I started instructing pilates classes, both on the reformer and mat for 6 years throughout undergrad and graduate school. Not only did I appreciate how much pilates reminded me of gymnastics conditioning, but I loved the focus on intricate muscle activation, isometric holds, strict form, and body awareness through core activation. After graduating with my B.S. in Kinesiology, I was accepted into Loma Linda University where I received my Doctor of Physical Therapy degree. I quickly accepted a job at VERT Sports Therapy and Rehabilitation in beautiful Santa Monica, CA. Since working, I have met amazing individuals who have aided in the expansion of my knowledge of the body. I have studied Myodetox directly under co-founder, Vinh Pham (@vinnierehab), taken a RockTape course with @themovementmastro herself, and learned from many others professionals in the rehab game. I am now stepping into the next chapter of my career as a private sports therapist, creating programs, hosting workshops, and treating one on one for a more direct and precise experience. Becoming educated on what is going on with your body is the most powerful piece of knowledge for establishing health and longevity for a pain-free and active lifestyle!" Happy New Year to the Healthy Wealthy and Smart family! To start off the year, I am joined by Dr. Jen Esquer to discuss social media management and product launches. Jen is a private sports physical therapist who creates programs, hosts workshops, and treats one on one for a more direct and precise experience. Her mission is to heal the world and the best way she can do that is through empowering you to learn how to heal yourself! In this episode, we discuss: -Why building a large social media platform may be simpler than you think -Empowering fresh graduates to spread their knowledge to the public -Audience engagement techniques which can help launch a product -The must-have tools Jen uses to enhance her social media presence -And so much more!   Fresh out of school you have a unique knowledge base to share with your audience as Jen states, “You know something that people don’t know.” Some of the most beneficial content can be the simple foundations in your field as Jen reminds, “People don’t even know basic information.”   Most influencers have adopted the mindset that there is always more to learn and, “They continue to do the work, it’s never done.” To continue reaching new successes, Jen encourages that, “We always should want to continue growth.”   To gain trust with an online community, you have to produce valuable content as, “Consistency is everything.” Jen’s recommendation is to, “Give out information because it only builds up your credibility even more.” Although giving away so much free content may seem to come at a cost, the reward accrues from building trust and helping future clients make sense of it all. Jen has found that, “The more that you can put out there, the more that you’ll get back.”   For more information on Jen: The best way I like to explain myself, is that I am a MOVER!
