Nous découvrons une bande dessinée autobiographique, It's Lonely At The Centre Of The Earth de Zoe Thorogood qui sort chez Hi Comics. It's Lonely at the Centre of the Earth.

This week we're getting familiar with this year's Eisner Award nominees with the auto-bio-graphic-novel from Zoe Thorogood. The writer/artist records 6 months of her own life as it falls apart in a desperate attempt to put it back together again in the only way she knows how. This is an intimate metanarrative that looks into the life of a selfish artist who must create for her own survival. Right away we realized this is one of the most unique books we have ever read with plenty of laughs and creative story-telling. Zoe Thorogood is just about to turn 25 and she's already an artistic force. She burst onto the comics scene with "The Impending Blindness of Billie Scott," published in 2020, about a young artist doomed to go blind. She followed that up with her brilliant memoir "It's Lonely at the Centre of the Earth," about her struggles with depression. If "Billie Scott" was an announcement of an intriguing young talent, "Centre of the Earth" all but solidified it. But one of the most intriguing things about "Centre of the Earth" is how it changes the reading of "Billie Scott." In this episode, we'll take a look at Thorogood's two works, how they interact with each other, and how Thorogood uses comics to face her demons.

Many of us see our work colleagues just as much, if not more, than friends and family – or at least, that was the case before March 2020 and the Covid lockdowns that followed. And is there an inevitable trade-off between climbing the corporate ladder and keeping up your workplace friendships? Host Isabel Berwick discusses these questions and more with Lynda Gratton, professor of Management Practice in Organisational Behaviour at the London Business School, and Sarah Gordon, chief executive of the Impact Investing institute in London and formerly business editor at the Financial Times, where she was one of Isabel's good workplace friends! Thanks for tuning in to Make Mine Paperback! This week is the conclusion of the month-long discussion of It's Lonely At The Centre Of The Earth, written and drawn by Zoe Thorogood. The first week looked at the art, while the second week focused on how Thorogood used the art to deliver her message. The most recent week centered on the desired audience of Zoe Thorogood's messaging. The final week will tie it all together by discussing the central theme of the novel: mental health struggles. To add legitimacy to the conversation the podcast brings on special guest Danille Giles, who works as a licensed counselor dealing with mental health issues. Does this comic book do a good job of addressing mental health struggles? What is the proper role of a mental health professional? Find out how MMP and Danielle feel about these questions and more, as this week deals with a topic that should be more commonly discussed.
Welcome back to Make Mine Paperwork, where the discussion on Zoe Thorogood's masterpiece It's Lonely At The Centre Of The Earth continues. This week picks up where last week's conversation left off. The previous discussion focused on how this comic book reaches its audience compared to the techniques other comic book creators use. This episode will explore the message of the book, and the target audiences of that message. Although Zoe had a target audience in mind, it seems she has purposefully left the message open-ended to appeal to the largest audience possible. This allows the reader to interpret it in a way that makes sense to them, instead of the classic advice people get when experiencing mental health struggles. Find out what the hosts think about the target audience in this week's edition of Make Mine Paperback!
Welcome back to another exciting discussion of It's Lonely At The Centre Of The Earth! MMP continues where they left off last week by comparing Zoe Thorogood's masterpiece to other comics from other well-established comic book creators. The focus this week is on the techniques used by Thorogood to deliver the comic's message. What makes this comic stand out is the masterful use of art to bring home the story's themes. Whereas the majority of comic books tend to have more focus on the words to establish a narrative, this novel breaks that trend by putting art front and center. The art combined with the presentation creates a truly unique reading experience. By presenting this as a biography, the emotions being presented are rawer than if the comic had been written as a work of fiction. Although not a superhero-based comic, It's Lonely At The Centre Of The Earth is a must-read for any comic book fan who wants to see the genre get pushed in new and exciting ways.
A new year means a new theme for Make Mine Paperback! To start off January, the podcast is switching up the format by focusing on only one graphic novel for the month. It's Lonely At The Centre Of The Earth, written and drawn by Zoe Thorogood, is a masterpiece that needs more time than just one discussion to cover. Zoe Thorogood details six weeks of her life and the struggles she experiences while trying to make it as a comic book artist and author. The novel covers difficult, yet important, topics such as mental health issues. Some readers may have trouble with the content. The first week will be dedicated to discussing the art and design of the novel. Zoe breaks the mold of traditional comic book art by creating an experience that breaks all the standard practices of the industry. Incorporating real-life pictures with inconsistent panel use creates a graphic novel where the art is more important and thought-provoking than the words. Zoe Thorogood expertly uses art to tell a story that many readers may find disturbing, yet relatable. Listen in as MMP takes time to analyze a truly great novel of the last year!

Natalia Mank helps empower business leaders to experience life with renewed clarity and joy, and today discusses the isolation and loneliness that many top leaders experience. 61% of CEOs feel that loneliness hinders their performance at work, emphasising not only the importance of developing strategies to guide people out of loneliness but also that you are not alone in feeling lonely. Natalia mentions a few factors that could lead to feelings of loneliness within top leaders, such as a shift in boundaries and relationships with peers you worked with before a promotion. Furthermore, they want to prove your capabilities in this position to these peers, but also to those you have to report to, such as the executive team, which could result in feeling isolated. A key strategy in overcoming loneliness is practising self-awareness by embracing structured and non-negotiable solitude. Other strategies that Natalia mentions include finding ways to connect with your team on a meaningful level, as well as investing time in speaking to a mentor or coach. I stumbled over my words more than a few times throughout this episode because I was SOOOO passionate about each and every word that left my mouth! The expression, "It's lonely at the top" can be viewed in a couple different ways but in this episode I give you Tiyana's take. The top is lonely at first, but when you operate from a place of authenticity, love, acceptance and gratitude, you start to attract the people and opportunities you deserve in this life! You may lose people along the way, but know that as long as you keep a pure heart and continue to evolve into the person you want to become.. that's all that matters! You are capable. You are worthy. You are supported and you are destined for INCREDIBLE things!
It's lonely at the top. But does it have to be? In this week's episode, Fernanda looks at loneliness in the C-suite. But instead of chalking it up to the necessity of the job, she digs deep into the science behind isolation, explains why we can't settle for lack of connection, and teaches us how to overcome loneliness to improve our health and happiness. Ep 397 - It's Lonely at the Top Guest: Ron Bremner By Stuart McNish "It's lonely at the top" is the famous line in Shakespeare's Henry IV. The King had a very challenging reign; he felt alone in his misery. “It's lonely at the top” speaks to the theory that leaders are not only lonely, they're also isolated – which raises the questions: are they? And if so, where do they find companionship and trust? Executive coach Ron Bremner says, “One of the challenges is as a CEO or executive leader, you can't ponder or wonder or muse about anything with the people who report to you. What you do, say, think, and decide impacts them and they all want to know you are in control and in charge.” Bremner goes on to say, “If you appear to be uncertain or inconsistent, your team will lose confidence in you and that's why you need to find a trusted advisor to work your way through the many challenges you face.” Stuart McNish invited Ron Bremner to join him for a Conversation that Matters about why and how executive coaches play an important role in the lives of leaders. When she became CEO of Pacesetter, she immediately joined a Vistage group to get the support and guidance of people in similar positions. For six years, she relied on the wisdom of the group to help her process complex issues and make tough decisions on topics such as talent, M&A, and change management. I recently spent some time away at a leadership retreat with many other small business owners and solopreneurs. When talking to my peers, one theme was clear: many of them deeply felt the loneliness of leadership. As a leader, you can be surrounded by people … and still feel alone. We carry a burden of responsibility – to keep our business running, to keep our team happy, to keep our team employed, to ensure their work goes well. What's left in our tank? It's hard to be creative, to lead and inspire, when you have nothing left to give. What can you do to feed yourself as a leader, and drive your joy and passion? Lonely at the top is a lie. There's plenty of people there, just like there are plenty of people at the bottom. The lonely part, the part that keeps people from the top is the long, miserable, lonely climb from the bottom to the top. More info, details etc. check me out on... It's not often a podcast guest is introduced via poetry, but this week, you're going to hear exactly that. Take a trip down memory lane with us as one of our beloved Season 1 guests, Jenna Carter (Director of Administration, Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman LLP) introduces us to Maria Stanfield (Founder, My Sister CEO) to the tune of Maya Angelou. A speaker, executive career coach, and bestselling author with a heart for service, Maria's message for us is simple: it's never too late to realize your full potential.
Moky Makura kicks off her podcast series by sharing why it's so lonely for women in leadership, which hormone is to blame for this and how the way we socialize as women holds us back.

In this episode of Life, Lemons & LemonDrops, Greer and Whitnie discuss the benefits of "going the extra mile," also considered to be exceeding expectations. Have you heard the phrase "under-promise and over-deliver?" It's a good rule of thumb to live and work by. The most successful businesses and people are the ones who give that little bit extra, setting them apart from the rest of the pack. The benefits not only inure to the benefit of your family, friends, customers, and clients but are also a boon to you. How? You are transformed by being a better version of yourself which results in increased confidence, consistency, and influence. The rewards can be financial, as well, when your boss, clients, or others notice you and compensate you accordingly. Take the time to observe how you can go the extra mile, then enjoy what you get in return, whether psychically or financially. And remember, the extra mile tends to be a lonely place because so many people just won't put in the extra effort. That is one of the reasons your hard work is seen and can pay off. If there's one word that immediately brings the image of someone to your mind, it may very well be: Celebrity. Just hearing that word and you associate it with your favourite fill-in-the-blank star. Many people want fame, even crave it, because of what we believe life is like for the famous. And despite being unfamous, we can all associate the perks of being a celebrity, including fortune, designer clothes, valet parking, mansions with pools. Yet even from the perspective of peering in on the lives of people we think we know, we can see the darker side of fame: the isolation, the loneliness.Celebrities serve a purpose in the lives of the rest of us, the unknowns. We sometimes glorify their successes and we, at times, glorify their failures. They're not just like us. What celebrities prove, to us, is that even fame, and the adoration of millions who send gifts to the wealthy and the known, is no guarantee that we aren't alone. Hosted on Acast. ITS LONELY OUT HERE.. on this weeks episode Morgan and Jacey talk about how hard it is to be a young adult and be professional at your job. The transition is hard, its weird, and can be so damn lonely. BUT GUESS WHAT you aren't the only one going through it, we are all trying our best to figure it out. That's honestly the main reason we have this podcast. We never want you to feel like you are alone or going through something "un-relatable" because no matter how weird or strange it may feel at least one person in this world can relate. This episode was inspired by a dear friend of ours that is struggling to find her place in the professional world while still enjoying her life outside of work. Being an entrepreneur or a leader of a team can be so rewarding. It's creative, it's strategic, it's impactful. But....it's also LONELY at times. Making decisions, dealing with challenges, and heck, even celebrating wins are all inherently collaborative or social activities. But, when we're the sole leader of a team or when we're the sole owner of a company, it can feel very isolating. Today, we're digging deep into this topic and exploring a couple of ways to help alleviate the loneliness that can come with leadership and entrepreneurship.
1 on 1 Basketball is a staple in the streets when it comes to hooping! The trash talking as well as the competition, you can't get anywhere else! "ISO ISLAND" has brought that feeling back! In episode 46 of A.M.University we sat down with the creators of "ISO ISLAND " to talk about the creation, why kids aren't playing outside anymore, and Wayhe possibly competing in the event?
“One of my biggest tilt moments was when I was appointed CEO in my mid 20s, and all my colleagues and peers were cheering me on, saying I would be amazing. Then when I arrived at the top, it was a very different story. I have never felt so lost and lonely and isolated.” In this podcast Nick and Jo speak with Sally Foley Lewis, Leadership Speaker, Management Consultant and Author of four books including The Productive Leader, Managing Remotely, and Delegate. Even through this difficult and challenging time at a young age, Sally learnt something potent… It's not ok, in fact it's not ethical, to put someone in a leadership role and then provide no support. It was a defining moment that would reshape her career. Now, Sally specialises in supporting managers in small and large organisations to enhance their leadership skills. She works closely with those who typically have responsibilities and pressure coming from every angle, with little or no guidance. Since most of us are brought up to follow rather than lead, it can be difficult to even know where to begin in management. In this podcast, Sally talks about firing up your confidence to be able to lead well and reprioritising your values. If you're finding it tricky to manage a team, if you want to better understand your own values, or if you simply want to learn more about yourself, then this week's podcast is a must-listen. It will resonate with anyone who is looking to grow their leadership skills. This is a tremendously spicy discussion that will have you thinking about your business, your team, and your people skills in an entirely new way.
I attack a few of the biggest misconceptions about success today in the podcast talking about how it's not really lonely at the top. Show Summary: Today's show is about how lonely it is or it can be being an entrepreneur, being a solopreneur, or being a business owner and some of the ways to cope. I don't know if lonely is the right word but I'm going to continue to use it in these circumstances. Here are a number of reasons this feeling happens: No one at your same level to have deep chats and interaction with You're the boss and you may have employees that you work with but you don't have others at your same level. If you're a good boss, you don't talk about your stresses and anxieties with your employees. You're the leader so the stress, responsibilities, and all these deep emotions and the challenges you have are very different than what your employees are dealing with. The person you can interact with doesn't know what you do or understand it Your family or your partner in life may know what you do but you can't have deep conversations about it. Your closest friends may not have business experience or be in your space and really don't understand or know it. Talking business with them can be different. How to deal with loneliness being an entrepreneur or a solopreneur: Go to a remote workplace. Go to a coffee shop, a park, a library, etc. and just have a different four walls that you're working in. You will find this invigorating. I love remote workplaces. I love Starbucks for their internet speed and that's important. Other coffee shops have crappy internet that you could feel like you're struggling more than you're working. So make sure it has good quality high speed internet and let it rip. Schedule everything. This includes timely breaks, workouts, dropping the kids off to school or activities, taking a break with your wife for lunch, etc. This is something I do fairly well. I literally schedule out everything. Join mastermind groups. You're actually in with like-minded people who are battling the same battle you are and that you can share deeply some of your challenges, issues, and successes with. Mastermind groups are fantastic. If you're not in one or have never tried one, I highly recommend them. The benefits of mastermind groups: They are eye-opening as you get to see things through other people's eyes. You get feedback. You get to see how other businesses are run. You get the interaction you're looking for. Get yourself a coach. If you don't have a coach and never had one, get a coach to help you not feel so lonely and have someone to talk to about your struggles and help you through it. Join online communities. I recommend Youpreneur for personal branding companies, coaches, solopreneurs, and consultants. It's by Chris Ducker and I'm a big fan of him. He's a great business person and I like the community. There are thousands of communities out there so be sure to find one that fits your personality style, your business model, and the style that you like. Caution: An online community is great but then you're still wrapped up online with no real talking. So here's what I did... From Youpreneur, we spun off a really small mastermind group that I do with three other people wherein we do video-based meetup, which is another good tactic. Do video-based meetups. If you're cooped up in your basement or office and it's all you see, having a video-based interaction would be great. Join accountability groups. I've never had one but these are people that hold you accountable for the things you say you're going to do. All the accountability groups I've ever had have come as a by-product of a quality online community or quality coach or mastermind group. But there are separate accountability groups out there. Group work environment Here you'll be in the same room with other people. The disadvantage though is the possibility of being distracted. But when everyone's on their headphones (with a little chitchat) and everyone's focused, just being around other people and the feeling of another human in the same room as you is therapeutic. The harsh reality is... it is lonely and you're going to go through things, challenges, questions, issues, and problems that you're not going to know how to address. You're not going to see people everyday. Or if you're a leader in an organization, you just can't share with other people. So find people you can share things with that can help you through it and schedule your time to be away from that environment you're in all the time. Join the Clique again as we engage in a relaxed conversation that explores the meem "opportunity cost" (the cost inharent with opportunity) and what affect it poses on ones personal development. Is it cognitively measured and weighed within an automatic formula that we compute in an instant when making a decision to expand or is it more subtle and less pervative? Are we more of an active participant in our limitation than we care to outwardly admit?? Lets kick it around and see.
