I recently spoke on the Living Your Best Life podcast with Leigh Farnell about the topic of wounded healers in the mental health space. After completing the main season of the WA Real podcast, I realised this applied to the bulk of people I had interviewed. People who had had a major life event/experience and, rather than completing the full healing journey of to clean up and remove the impact of the event/experience, set about trying to save the world instead - replicating destructive patterns in the world. Many of the life event i describe in more detail in my short ebook - free download Description from show: Lead Your Best Life: Why Healers, Coaches & Leaders Must Heal Themselves First. The railway industry is undergoing a transformative journey in how it approaches competence management. In the latest episode of the Rail Technology Magazine podcast, host Jonathan Dean is joined by Gabriel Stroud, CEO and co-founder of AssessTech, and Emma Lowe, a Occupational Psychologist, to explore the shift from compliance-based competence to a developmental approach. Developmental competence management is about more than just ticking boxes; it's about empowering individuals to take ownership of their professional growth. Gabriel and Emma discuss how this approach can lead to a more confident and capable workforce, capable of handling high-pressure situations with poise and precision. This shift not only enhances individual performance but also boosts organisational efficiency and safety. One of the key elements discussed is the role of feedback. Continuous feedback loops ensure that employees are not only meeting compliance standards but are also growing their skills and knowledge. Gabriel emphasises the importance of building confidence in one's competence, transforming assessments from a source of anxiety to an opportunity for growth. Emma highlights the significance of balancing technical and non-technical skills. While technical skills are essential, non-technical skills such as communication, decision-making, and the ability to remain calm under pressure are equally critical. These skills often determine how well an individual can apply their technical knowledge in real-world scenarios. The podcast also delves into the importance of a robust verification strategy. Verification acts as a feedback mechanism, ensuring that competence assessments are not only conducted but are effective and meaningful. This strategy helps organisations identify areas for improvement and tailor their training programs accordingly. As the railway industry continues to evolve, adopting a developmental approach to competence management could serve as a model for other sectors. By focusing on continuous improvement and fostering a culture of learning, organisations can not only comply with regulations but also drive innovation and excellence. Listen to the full episode to discover more about how developmental competence management can transform your organisation and prepare your workforce for the challenges of tomorrow. Hosted on Acast. In this episode we discuss how practice can become part and parcel of business and the importance of creating a safe space in which to develop and learn. In this episode Gemma is talking to special guest Jo Bamford. We talk about the dynamics of workplace conflict and ways to embrace diverse perspectives which can lead to better outcomes. By inviting challenge, conflict can drive innovation, by prompting us to consider alternative viewpoints and solutions.Staying actively curious and active listening are essential tools for overcoming conflict avoidance and promoting constructive dialogue.A key highlight from our discussion is the insight drawn from Matthew Syed's book 'Rebel Ideas', particularly the chapter on Rebels vs Clones. Syed advocates for seeking out individuals who challenge the status quo, as their perspectives often lead to more innovative outcomes. We also stress the importance of expecting positive outcomes when addressing conflicts, reframing them as opportunities for growth and learning. And we explore the concept of viewing fear as excitement, shifting our mindset towards conflict as a pathway to innovation and strategic success. Our Tips for Overcoming Conflict Avoidance include: Recognise that conflict isn't inherently negative – it's healthy and necessary (with the right approach)Acknowledge that it's natural to have different perspectives – give yourself permission to disagreeInvite challenge, and then...Focus on listening and understanding the other person's perspective.Aim for a third, better outcome rather than ‘winning the argument'Avoid procrastination.Reframe your approach to conflict as an opportunity to explore differences and reach better outcomes.About Jo Bamford:Jo is an Occupational Psychologist with 30+ years of experience and an even bigger bucket of passion about maximising potential, raising performance, removing obstacles and enabling people and organisations achieve outcomes that are extra ordinary. On this episode I interview Fiona Murden, Occupational Psychologist, Speaker, Blogger and passionate about doing what makes your heart sing. Fiona spends a lot of her time profiling senior leaders of organisations (around the world) and helps them find a good fit within the business. On the back of this she is involved with executive coaching within organisations. Outside of the corporate world, Fiona is also a blogger with a fascination of understanding the brain and helping others make sense of things happening in their worlds. Background Fiona started out reading medicine and openly admits to her own life never being a straight journey. She does admit during the interview that she wanted to be a fighter pilot! Fiona shares; "Even when you're exploring; it gets messy, it's difficult. You have to stick to it and find what makes your heart sing." Making time to think Fiona promotes the action of making time to think; time for thinking ahead. It's easy to get caught up being busy and everything associated with that. Society values busyness over thinking and our brain is geared up to action rather than contemplation. Wanting to make a positive difference to peoples lives, Fiona embarked on the journey of writing a book. Fiona is Author of Defining You: How to profile yourself and unlock your full potential. Packed with research and psychology, the driver for writing her book was to make the tips and ideas (which she uses within organisations) available to everyone. She is both passionate and on a mission. Fiona has made it her purpose to help others understand their own purpose. It's become 'her itch' and she's determined to pursue this. On today's podcast we discuss the state of Leadership Development around the globe. Jeremy believes that the leadership development industry has focused too much on the individual leader and take a look at the data that shows high performing teams & companies are driven more by a strong identities rather than great leaders. Jeremy Holt is an Occupational Psychologist with 24 years’ experience as a consultant, a coach, and a leadership trainer. He has a Social Psychology Degree from the University of Kent and worked in London advertising agencies for seven years before taking his Masters in Occupational Psychology (MSc). He is the Founder and CEO of Centre for Team Excellence in Sussex, England.Jeremy's research with the University of Sussex in the UK has concluded the following:Team identity causes a highly significant increase in perceived and actual team performance. Over time the differences in team identity and team performance polarized such that those teams with strong identities became stronger and performed better, while those that started weak became weaker. After 6 months the 20% of teams with the strongest identities outperformed the 20% with the weakest identities by a massive 53%. Over the past 150 years medical science has developed beyond all recognition yet there is a huge gap between these scientific developments on the one hand, and our understanding of the psychological demands of medical work on the other. This lack of psychological mindedness permeates the profession from selection into medical school onwards and results in worrying levels of mental distress amongst doctors, and ultimately poorer outcomes for patients.A lecture by Dr Caroline Elton, Occupational Psychologist 3 December 2018The transcript and downloadable versions of the lecture are available from the Gresham College website: https://www.gresham.ac.uk/lectures-and-events/missing-from-medical-trainingGresham College has been giving free public lectures since 1597. Penny Dick is a Professor in Organizational Psychology at University of Sheffield Management School. This talk was given on Wednesday 19th March 2014. "Lots of unpleasant experiences at work are difficult to make sense of and even more difficult to explain to other people. But what happens if you think you might be the victim of, say, bullying or sexual harassment but you are not really sure if you are such a victim and whether anyone (with power) will believe you? This talk explores the problems around the interpretation and reporting of social experiences like sexual harassment and how these problems are not adequately dealt with at the policy level." Penny She obtained her PH.D. from Sheffield University which, with her research being in social construction of gender in police work. She worked as an Occupational Psychologist in both public and private sector before taking up an academic post at the University of Teeside in 1993. Her areas of professional expertise include critical incident stress debriefing, stress counselling, stress management, assessment and selection, management development, and training. Penny’s research interests are all in the area of critical management, which means that she looks at the politics of work and work experiences and exposes how taken-for-granted ideas influence what happens in organizations, particularly in relation to inequalities and the distribution of power and resources.
