From this episode:"You don't just use the word generosity; you have the complete spirit of generosity. I have been a recipient of that generosity. And I think that's also for my listeners. And you and I have the philosophy we want clients that we would like to sit down and have dinner with to bring this part around full circle about the heart." Dr. T"If you're not consistent, you're training your prospects, that you're not consistent. That's not something you want to teach them, that you're sporadic. How you handle the little things in life gives clues on how you handle the bigger things. So if you're inconsistent with all this, he's probably inconsistent on his meetings, he's probably inconsistent on deadlines, or she would be inconsistent on getting the work done. "There is a fine balance between honoring the past and losing yourself in it. You can acknowledge and learn from the mistakes you made and then move on. It's called forgiving yourself." -Eckhart TolleThis week on We Go Boldly we go to the past so we can move forward to the future. Dealing with the past is not the same as denying your past or pretending you are not impacted by it. Rather - choosing how we move forward after addressing what we need to from our past.We have to strike a balance between honoring our past and history—without letting it limit or hold us back from moving forward. Oh but how. It is not easy! It doesn't help that our brains make it easier to hold onto the negative than the positive. So how do you let go? You have to decide to let it go. We are here to help. Setting boundaries with ourselves can change the way in which we look at the world, but even more importantly it can change how we feel about ourselves. Once we learn to listen to our inner voice, hear and tend to our needs without judgment or shame we begin to build healthy stable boundaries around our lives. Those boundaries set the stage for how we can embrace our power in a meaningful and lasting manner. The purpose behind building those boundaries is to create that lasting relationship with the honest version of yourself, and in order to do that you have to take the time to get to know that person. Healthy boundaries around who you are, who you want to be, what values and morals you hold, what you are willing to do all serve to build that foundation. Over time as you continue to grow and develop that person and those boundaries in an intentional manner, you can expand them out to include other people. Those boundaries with other people then set the stage for how you are willing to, and expect to, be treated by others and by the Universe at large. Putting those expectations out into the universe is a part of setting forth on your path in life. The clearer you can be around what you are willing and unwilling to accept the better off you will be. Weak and unhealthy boundaries will often cause you to give away or diminish your own power, rather than embrace it as we are meant to. Tune in to our full episode to learn more about how setting boundaries will help you embrace your power and potential.GO BOLDLY HOMEWORKJournal: Take time to reflect on your relationships as they are right now. Hello my friends and favorite listeners!I am currently on a hiatus at the moment, but while on break, I wanted to replay some of my favorite episodes this season. This week's episode is near and dear to my heart. Because this is my very first episode with my sister, Dr. Cressida Joseph, owner and CEO of Beacon Dental Group in Boston. She has been featured in the Boston Globe and she has been serving her community for the past 29 years. She's a woman of faith, and believes we are all here for a purpose which is designed to move humanity forward. What makes this episode particularly special, is that she truly captures the essence of what the Defining YOU podcast is all about. I admire her faith in God, courage and determination to really go after her career aspirations. What you wouldn't know about Cressida is that she beat all the odds and started a brand new dentistry practice at a time when women were few and far between in her field. She believed in her vision so much she invested $25K to work with a consultant to get her business off the ground, even when everyone thought she was crazy. Listen for Cressida's inspirational story of perseverance and self-motivation and the details of her decision that led to her success as an true leader, entrepreneur and thriving business owner. Everyone wants to know why Dianne Wilkerson is getting back into politics. She was the first Black woman to serve as a state senator in Massachusetts. She represented Black Bostonians for 15 years and resigned after she was caught accepting bribe money.Wilkerson spent three years in jail and has since worked to regain the trust of the community by continuing to serve. She's been involved in governance issues at the Boston Public Schools board, economic equity for the city's Black and Brown residents, and the COVID-19 response. It's the latter that has inspired her to run for the Senate seat in the 2nd Suffolk District. “We know we needed to have a place where our people would feel comfortable to go to get vaccine,” Wilkerson told me. “What I learned in the process is we were calling, doing wellness checks on our seniors. They said, ‘I have the vaccine. I don't have any food. I have vaccine. I don't, I don't have money for a copay. I lost my job.'“And so we realized this was about more than COVID. It was about how the government with all of its resources still can't figure out ways to respond to our people. And when we went to the people who are elected to deliver those resources, we didn't get a response.”This week on the Defining You podcast, Dianne Wilkerson gives her candid perspective on what went wrong when she was convicted of bribery, how she has sought to serve the community, and who is inspiring her today. Listen to this episode to understand the Dianne Wilkerson story, her background and what motivates her to seek out public service, and how you might find a way to serve in your community, too. Your unaddressed trauma is holding you back! Doing the hard work of dealing with past trauma and building emotional intelligence is not easy. Your trauma shows up in every aspect of your life, including the workplace, romantic relationships, and how you see yourself in your community. But if you leave your trauma unaddressed, you risk failing to live up to your own potential and carrying the weight of those past negative experiences with you. There are many ways to tackle trauma, including through therapy, but one of the tools you can use to unburden yourself and find peace is by journaling. That's Alicia Adamson's specialty. Alicia is the executive director of the Brookline Teen Center, where she focuses on helping young people reach their full potential. She's also the author of “Walking In Your Truth: A Personal Journal To Reflect On Your Life's Purpose.”This week, Alicia shares on the Defining YOU podcast how she teaches others to use journaling as a tool for self-discovery, healing, and empowerment. And she shares her own story of how journaling saved her from self-destruction.“I didn't want to have self-doubt or low self-esteem,” Alicia told me. “I didn't want to admit that validation from other people was really the fuel to self-love versus, oh no, I'm fearfully and wonderfully made. And believing that in my own soul and then letting that grow into what my self-love looks like. That took me a long time to unpack that.” Listen to hear how journaling, therapy, and faith have motivated Alicia to unlock her best self and how you can too.Do you journal? #110 Alvin From Relab Studios: Designing The Perfect Website Today's episode of The Ecom Show is special because it's the first time we'll be diving into the intricacies of product design. We have Alvin Hermanto from Relab Studios here with us today to talk about everything that goes into designing the perfect e-commerce store. Relab Studios is a specialized design agency that helps e-commerce businesses design products like websites and applications by combining design thinking with UI/UX capabilities. Daniel and Alvin met through YouTube as they're both YouTube entrepreneurs that share expert tips and strategies specific to their field. Daniel talks about his experience of running Budai Media, an e-commerce retention marketing agency, on his Youtube channel; he also shares tips and strategies to help other businesses scale. Similarly, Alvin Hermanto also has an active Youtube channel, where he teaches businesses about design thinking and product design. Tune in to this episode to find out more about: ✔ How Relab Studios Began ✔ The 6 Stages of Designing A Website ✔ Design Tips From Alvin How Relab Studios Began Relab Studios is Alvin Hermanto's first business. It's a design consultancy firm that provides digital product design and solves design problems for e-commerce clients. They build and work with websites, applications, and other portals. Growing up in Indonesia, Alvin had always been interested in design. Unsure about what to specialize in, he went to Malaysia and studied graphic designing since it was a broader field of study. His university gave him the opportunity to complete his course in Australia, which is where he earned his degree in graphic designing with honors. Alvin began offering his services as a graphic designer almost 15 years ago. He worked with several brands and transitioned to becoming a digital designer during the time of the e-commerce boom. It's been over nine years since Alvin started his own UI/UX design consultancy firm Relab Studios. They focus on an intersection between business and UX design or user experience design. Alvin's firm designs software websites and applications; they also share their expertise and techniques on their growing Youtube channel. The 6 Stages of Designing A Website Alvin has devised a six-stage design process to create the perfect website for his clients. These stages blend design thinking and agile design methodologies to create a website that truly represents their client's brand. The idea is to pay equal attention to strategy and user empathy to create a user-friendly experience through a collaborative process. Here are the six stages to perfecting your design: Understanding: Stage one is understanding the user, which is the end-user itself. But you're also trying to understand the business. And the way you would do this is by conducting interviews with different stakeholders of the business in the room. You do this to understand the vision of the business, future plans, needs, and expectations from the product. This is the most crucial step, as it forms a base for the rest of your decisions. Defining: You've understood the problem; now it's time to sit and define the goal of the product. This is done by outlining the premise to create a user strategy template, or a set of design principles, success metrics, the value proposition canvas, and solutions that will define all the needs established in the understanding phase. Ideating: This is where you start sketching solutions and start putting down ideas on what you want your product to look like. This stage is the most collaborative as it involves both the clients and the design team sitting together to put down ideas that they'd like to see in the product. It's basically a visual representation of all the thoughts and ideas that will frame the website. Deciding: The ideation phase involves jotting down all the ideas and thoughts that could go into the product. Stage four is where you narrow your focus down and shortlist the solutions you like the most. This stage involves voting on ideas and finding a winning solution. By the end of this stage, you usually have a blueprint of what your website would look like with your website flow and user journey outlined. Prototyping: This is the stage where you create your storyboard by sketching out what your product would look like on different screens. This can be done in a variety of ways. If you're comfortable with Adobe, you can create your entire prototype using tools like Figma or Adobe XD. If you're not a designer, you could use tools like Canva or even Powerpoint to illustrate what each page or part of your website would look like. This step helps you see what your end product will look like, and the perks of using Figma or Adobe XD is that your UI can directly be given to the UX designer to implement. Validating: The last stage is to conduct a round of objective user testing to weed out any kinks in your design. This step allows you to see how smoothly your user journey is in action and is an essential quality assurance step before you release your MVP for the world to use. Design Tips From Alvin Your product design is a true reflection of your brand's identity, and it's one thing that directly affects your relationship with your customers. Your user interface and experience shape the way your customers will interact with your brand as a whole; which is why it's important to remember to ensure that your digital product is in tune with your physical product. Here are some expert tips for Alvin. Do your research: Look at actual products you use in your everyday life, and observe how their digital presence ties back to their physical products. Find brands that you like purchasing from online, and observe how their design is creating a positive experience for you. For instance: Check out Herman Miller. They create high-end office chairs, but more than that, they serve their customers really well, from a customer service point of view. They've done this by creating well-segmented user flows to provide essential content in the form of videos and blogs. Create a holistic experience: Good design is something that goes beyond just looking or feeling good. It's about the holistic experience it creates for everyone that uses the design. So let's say we're designing a portal for a wine company, a wine distributor, then it also needs to work really, really well for their salespeople, customer service people, not just the end-user or their customers. So yeah, good product design is something that works seamlessly for every person that uses it. Try to be inclusive: Design is subjective, which is why it's best to have multiple opinions and make it a collaborative process. The ideal design team involves having a facilitator, a designer, and a decider. The facilitator is the person that holds the compass and navigates the direction in which the product design should be aimed at. The decider is usually someone who has a deep understanding of the brand and oversees all the ideas being suggested by the facilitator; the designer carries out the vision that's been laid out by the facilitator and decider. Hire someone who's empathetic: Ideally, a product designer is an individual who has a strong acumen for design thinking to back their experience in UI/UX design. They fuse their understanding of your business with design principles to create a product that matches the needs of your customers. If you can't afford to hire a product designer or product designing agency, look for user interface designers that have a strong understanding of how to solve problems. They should be able to understand and empathize with the needs of your clients to help you design a product that best caters to your needs. Todd Kashdan is leading expert on the psychology of well-being, curiosity, psychological strengths, mental agility, and social relationships. His research has been featured in the Harvard Business Review, New York Times, and Forbes amongst many other publications. In 2010, he received the Distinguished Faculty Member of the Year Award at George Mason University and in 2013, he received the Distinguished Early Career Researcher Award by the American Psychological Association. His latest book, The Art of Insubordination, is for anyone who wants to see more justice, creativity & innovation in the world. He is also the author of Curious?, The Upside of Your Darkside, and Designing Positive Psychology. Todd's work is right at the front of my first book Defining You opening with how to keep your mind as open and flexible as possible in order to explore your own story. I approached Todd for permission to include his curiosity inventory and he very generously said yes. Todd has done some fantastic work from research to writing and his website https://toddkashdan.com/ is really worth exploring. We discuss ageism and how Todd says that he obsesses over social norms that are dysfunctional. Take for example Silicon Valley rebuffing the idea of giving anyone over the age of 25 a second look for job opportunities. How we don't have a cultural respect for our elders like in Asian cultures and if we did we that maybe we'd gain wisdom from the people right there in our families rather than having to refer to books. But Todd also raises how ageism is directed both ways – the older generations can dismiss the younger or refuse to learn and be inflexible to changes that are coming through. We need more cross-pollination of intergenerational thinking. We discuss false information and Todd explains how “the information that we're first exposed to is rarely right wherever that's from” yet we tend to take the view of people we perceive as socially attractive, and dismiss those who are not. When coming to a ‘point of view' Todd encourages us all to stop and ask ourselves these questions: What is the evidence for the position that I'm emotionally tied to right now? What is the best evidence for the alternative viewpoint? Why do I believe the evidence I hold near and dear? Why am I dismissing evidence to a counter point? What evidence would be required to change my mind?”By doing this we show intellectual humility, curiosity and perspective taking helping to play our part in making the world a better place to be. Todd recently published a piece on ‘The 10 principles for having constructive conflict in organisations'. Something we need to do if we're to ensure diversity. We discuss how important this is in boardrooms to classrooms and Todd emphasizes how important it is to “allow people to disagree even as minorities of one, not because they might be right but just because it allows everyone to see like ‘oh maybe we are prematurely closing on one viewpoint too quickly.'”When it comes to the learning Todd comments on the strange societal attitude we have to learning. “The notion of living until you're in your 80s and 90s and yet you're done with formal education after college at the age of around 22. So for the next 40 years you just you wing it and you go into your silo in terms of your own individual searches for books and for information online.” And poses the question to you the listener of “What is the fundamental list of life skills that everyone should learn?” I'd love to know your thoughts.

In October 2020 the total world population was 7.81 billion people, and a whopping 4.14 billion of those people were using social media. And the amount of time spent on social media is increasing, with the typical user now spending roughly 4 hours of their day (that's a quarter of our waking life) on social platforms. Social media has been described as more addictive than cigarettes and alcohol. Lou and I talk about the tricks of the social media giants trades from ‘intermittent reinforcements' such as the pull down to refresh feature to the way in which we end up relying on social media for our stored memories (known in the trade as investment). The tech giants really do steal our attention in exchange for commercial gain. We also chat about what you can do to make your own experience more positive. Part of the negative impact of social media on our well-being is that it takes us away from other activities that are essential to our brain health such as sleep and face-to-face social interaction. So the most obvious strategy to combat the impact of social media on your well-being is to give it a break or stop using it. But that's not the only option, try monitoring how much you use social media and exactly how it's impacting you. You may be surprised by the patterns that emerge. (For more on techniques for modifying your social media use to make it more healthy check out the Chapter 10 in the second edition of Defining You). This time of year is filled with joy and often fraught with stress. We have spent all year digging deep and listening to our inner voice and focusing on ensuring we find and hold onto our identities in the face of challenges. Now is not the time to lose ourselves. Holidays allow for the opportunity to build our family identity through family traditions. Cultivating family identity can be an anchor for you. Family identity can be reinforced by actually naming the traditions you do. They have a magical way of instilling family identity. In this week's episode, Rielly and Tovah jump feet first into the holiday season with equal amounts of excitement and apprehension. Growing up neither one would describe their holidays as a “Walton Family Christmas” but it allows them to decide what traditions they create for their families. They talk about their own traditions, setting boundaries, holding onto our identities, and yes, finding joy this holiday season. Join us as you are preparing for this December. “The world is waiting for you to pursue your purpose.” “Find your purpose” looks great on a poster or on a decorative wooden plaque but what does it really mean? And more importantly can it mean anything if you don't know who you are? Rielly and Tovah discuss the importance of learning who you are first before figuring out what you should be doing with your life. Lacking a clearly defined sense of self, or identity, often makes it tough to know exactly what you want. They continue their deep dive into their conversation about identity. How well do you know yourself? Do you say yes to make others happy? What are your values? Do you live your life accordingly? Awareness of personal values can go a long way toward outlining your sense of self. As always, they end with action items. Let's figure out how to build that sense of self! GO BOLDLY HOMEWORK Check out our free course, if you haven't already, which focuses on finding your inner voice. In fact if you have done it before, try it again. The link for the course is in our Instagram bio. Share some things you do to make sure you connect with your sense of self with your accountability partner or share them with us. Get ready for our Defining You course. We will lay the groundwork for you to be able to write your very own personal mission statement. Did you enjoy this episode? According to psychologist Dr Jeffrey Arnett (whose work I also refer to in Defining You) these three areas define it:1. Taking responsibility for yourself which "generally means accepting the consequences of your actions without expecting anyone else...to protect you from those consequences." 2. Making independent decisions - "It's finding out who you are and how you fit into the world, and there is a range of decisions that go into that." 3. Having financial independenceThere's a period between 18 and 29 that Arnett described as Emerging Adulthood which has since been backed by neuroscientific research showing our brain continues to develop until our late 20s. For some though being an adult never seems to come. Lou and I discuss this and much more too in this week's episode of Dot to Dot. As Lou says "Some might say 'to do lists' was a boring subject but actually the more you delve into it the more interesting and fascinating it gets because they have so many benefits. Which include increased productivity, increased confidence, greater focus, being more effective because you're writing things down and warming up your brain to actually achieve them, motivation.' We discuss the way we use 'to do lists', individual differences, what the research tells us and how to use 'to do lists' optimally. We explore whether lists are helpful when it comes to longer ranger creative processes like writing a book, how they can be used to assist difficult conversations, using them as a mechanism to create reflective space, a reminder to look after health, well-being and relationships or simply remembering the things you need to get done.Do you write a 'to do list'? Sports psychologist Lou Jones and I discuss how fighting with emotions just makes them worse. How it doesn't feel natural to just leave things because we're taught to 'fix things' in the outside world all of the time, but it's not the best way to deal with emotions. We will always have emotions, because it's part of being human and that's how we work so it's a life long journey to learn how we can manage those in our world in order to achieve the things we want to. We're not always going to get it right - it's about learning as we go and constantly noticing that we're on this journey. Lou says 'I really enjoy learning about myself, it helps me to have a more satisfying life.' I do too but it's taken a long time, even as a psychologist, to realise that's what I needed to do. How about you? To learn more about 'being you' sign up to the Defining You digital course which comes out in May with the release of the 2nd edition of the book. To add your name to the wait list please contact lorna.walls@aroka.co.uk Here are some things that people who went on the pilot said: "The Defining You course made me think about past experiences (childhood, university and early career) in a new, more profound way. It has made me reconsider scenarios from my past and has helped me see them for what they were and how they shaped my future even into my life today. For me, it has been genuinely revelatory and I really didn't want the course to end. I am still a work in progress but feel better equipped to look at the past, present and future."“A brilliant and thought-provoking course and a great introduction to personal reflection and development. The group coaching sessions were welcoming, non-invasive and entirely inspirational. From a practical point of view, the learning format worked perfectly for me. The book is great for reference and the online material is broken down into really digestible and engaging videos and exercises. At no point did I feel under pressure to have completed the exercises or watch the material! It really was a case of “go at your own pace and have fun with it”. If you're at a point in your life where you want to understand “how did I get here? And where do I go next?” I really recommend this programme.”"It pushed me out of comfort zone and I started to feel more confident in fully participating towards the end. It has been a cathartic process because I started not to worry about what everyone else was thinking, and more about myself – not something that has ever come naturally to me. For the first time in 59 years I think I have become far more self aware and accepting of myself but also very encouraged there is still time for development!"

On this episode I interview Fiona Murden, Occupational Psychologist, Speaker, Blogger and passionate about doing what makes your heart sing. Fiona spends a lot of her time profiling senior leaders of organisations (around the world) and helps them find a good fit within the business. On the back of this she is involved with executive coaching within organisations. Outside of the corporate world, Fiona is also a blogger with a fascination of understanding the brain and helping others make sense of things happening in their worlds. Background Fiona started out reading medicine and openly admits to her own life never being a straight journey. She does admit during the interview that she wanted to be a fighter pilot! Fiona shares; "Even when you're exploring; it gets messy, it's difficult. You have to stick to it and find what makes your heart sing." Making time to think Fiona promotes the action of making time to think; time for thinking ahead. It's easy to get caught up being busy and everything associated with that. Society values busyness over thinking and our brain is geared up to action rather than contemplation. Wanting to make a positive difference to peoples lives, Fiona embarked on the journey of writing a book. Fiona is Author of Defining You: How to profile yourself and unlock your full potential. Packed with research and psychology, the driver for writing her book was to make the tips and ideas (which she uses within organisations) available to everyone. She is both passionate and on a mission. Fiona has made it her purpose to help others understand their own purpose. It's become 'her itch' and she's determined to pursue this. “Curiosity is the essence of human existence. “Who are we? Where are we? Where do we come from? Where are we going?” I don't know. I don't have any answers to those ques- tions. Let's talk personal branding. This is how you want to present yourself in the world, in an authentic way that reflects who you are, what you do and how you help. Just "being retired" is not all you are. Just being a "VP of marketing" is not all you are. You get a chance to craft the way you want to be seen, and then you challenge is to live up to this image. We discuss why it's not a ‘thing' in the sporting profession, who suffers from it in the work environment, why and the best ways of dealing with it. The key take aways are that:- it's about understanding how our achievements fit into our personal narrative- we need to make sure that we're talking about the worries and fears associated with imposter syndrome with someone who will understand such as a mentor, family member or friend- it's important to find ways in which to validate our own self-worth- And then Lou adds her own wisdom about having ‘good sex' too.For more about understanding your personal narrative please take a look at my first book Defining You. http://bit.ly/DefiningYouhttps://amzn.to/2lFMwOr If you want to know more about how we are influenced by mentors and how to find role-models and mentors who can help us then my latest book is Mirror Thinking – How Role Models Make Us Human. https://bit.ly/MirrThinkhttps://bit.ly/MirrorUSACanhttps://bit.ly/2ylrc7H Follow us/ask us any questions on:Instagram: www.instagram.com/fiona_murdenTwitter: https://twitter.com/fionamurdenFacebook: https://facebook.com/fionamurden Or for LouInstagram: www.instagram.com/loupylou78Twitter: https://twitter.com/louisejones78

Self-development books are big business - but is it just navel-gazing on the hand or esoteric theory on the other? 'At the end of the day people want something that's pragmatic, and they can actually do something with.' Fiona Murden has been working with the world's most senior leaders for years: in Defining You she makes the profiling tools and techniques usually reserved for the extremes of society - top leaders and Olympians or criminals - available to anyone who wants to understand themselves better so they can make better decisions. Along the way we talk about winning awards, writing as a woman, the role of running in writing, and the power of partnerships. Unmissable listening.

As a result of his work, consultants and coaches get the three Bs: more bookings, more buzz, and more business. On a personal note he is a baseball nut.
