Exercise physiologist, nutritionist, biomechanist, and certified strength and conditioning specialist Rachel Straub is our guest today in Episode 1297 of The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore!   What happens when someone that makes health and fitness their number one priority becomes so sick that they can't even take care of their basic needs? Rachel Straub, MS, CSCS, from MindBodyGreen is an exercise physiologist, nutritionist, biomechanist, and certified strength and conditioning specialist, but after a trip to Central America that resulted in a half dozen tick bites she went from being an active, independent person to bedridden and depending on her parents. Her battle against Lyme disease has been a large hard journey, that has made her a stronger advocate for being in control of your own health. It's taken her over 4 years to recover, but now she is a voice for those who are too ill to speak and to give them hope.   Listen in today as Jimmy talks with Rachel about chronic fatigue and how it is different from just being tired, how she knew something was ultimately wrong with her, how she finally got a diagnosis, how she found out she had Lyme disease, how conventional medicine played into her treatment, the time it took to recover, why it took so long, heavy metals, weight training, her book that she co-authored Weight Training Without Injury: Over 350 Step-by-Step Pictures Including What Not to Do! , and more. Author and former vegan Lierre Keith is our guest today in Episode 1296 of The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore!   With films like the Netflix documentary What The Health, a great number of people have been convinced that the “healthy” way to eat is a vegetarian diet or a meatless vegan diet as the optimal way to eat for your health, improve the environment, and show your care and concern for animals. We’ve heard these arguments made by the fundamental and radical end of the vegetarian movement, but are they valid? Today’s podcast interview guest knows firsthand how falling for the myth of the vegetarian/vegan lifestyle can quite literally ruin your life. Listen to Lierre Keith tell us about why she became a vegan to begin with, how veganism ruined her health and nearly killed her, the negative health impact of consuming soy, what it was that convinced her she was wrong about meat-eating, the positive concept of death that is involved in the making of all food including fruits and vegetables, what meat she ate to end her veganism, how the Weston A. Price Foundation taught her the proper kinds of foods to consume, the impact of Sally Fallon’s Nourishing Traditions on her philosophical change of mind, her response to Dr. T. Colin Campbell’s The China Study book, why she decided to write her own book, the shortcomings of factory farming, how grains are destructive to the planet, why hunter-gatherers were the perfect picture of health, why those behind the Eco-Atkins movement are so misinformed about soy foods, and how the vegetarian/vegan community has responded to the message of her book. AFFORDABLE KETONE TESTING AT LAST KEY QUOTE: “I needed to reduce inflammation, heal my brain, and get my immune system in check. I knew that ketones do all those things so I started a ketogenic diet for my health.” — Shawn Mynar Here’s what Jimmy and Shawn talked about in Episode 73: - What can I do to heal my adrenals and thyroid issues while on a ketogenic diet? Do I need to heal these prior to going keto? Hey guys, I have been attempting to do a ketogenic diet since last July and it works wonders for my MS symptoms (I first heard about it from Dr. Terry Wahls). The issue I'm having now is adrenal fatigue and thyroid issues. I’m taking low-dose Synthroid, but I’m tired, nauseous, depressed, and feel cold all the time. Despite keeping my carbs under 30g total daily eating only whole foods, I have gained 20 pounds in two months. Since the adrenals and thyroid are connected, is it possible that I’m eating too low-carb for my stressed out adrenals? Or I am I not low-carb enough? You guys often say on Keto Talk that hormones dictate everything about your weight and health, but something is going on with me that I can’t seem to figure out. I feel like crap most of the time despite being on the healthiest diet I've ever eaten in my life—no gluten, no soy, no dairy, no sugar, 3-5 cups of fresh veggies, full fat coconut milk, grass-fed meats, cooking with bacon grease, and 1/2 cup of blueberries daily. Is there a way to heal my adrenals and thyroid with the ketogenic diet or do I need to heal these first before going full keto? Really love the podcast. All the best, Christy HIGH-FAT LOW-CARB, PERFECT MACROS NOTICE OF DISCLOSURE: Paid sponsorship   - The keto perspective on the What The Health? documentary - Preview of next week’s episode breaking down the misinformation shared 1. Does keto take away your period and lead to undesirable health effects? Should I add in starch every few days to deal with these issues? Hey there, I recently read this article by a naturopath named Dr. Lara Briden: http://www.larabriden.com/are-you-eating-enough-get-period-amenorrhea/ In the post, she claims that eating a low-carb, ketogenic diet will take away your period. I've still not had a period since I started keto over 20 months ago. I also developed all four of the signs she mentioned: low T3 (non-Hashimoto's hypothyroid), hair loss, constipation, and insomnia. I average 5.5 hours of less-than-restful sleep per night with sleep aids and high-dose melatonin waking up every couple of hours. I'm desperate to know how I can tweak my ketogenic diet to favor fertility. My naturopath knows very little about keto and I’m not sure she can help me. I’ve been strict keto with 20/4 intermittent fasting for a while, so I wonder if I could get away with some starch every few days to see if that helps. Between my infertility and profoundly low estradiol, it just know it has triggered my binge eating. Thanks so much for any help you can provide, Tara THE PERFECT KETO SUPPLEMENT USE COUPON CODE LLVLC FOR 15% OFF NOTICE OF DISCLOSURE: Paid sponsorship 2. Should I eat both low-carb and low-calorie in order to get into ketosis and see the results I’m looking for? Hi guys, I have listened to all of your podcasts, some of them twice as I’ve become a sponge with the information. My question for you is about breast cancer and ketosis. I was diagnosed with breast cancer 3 1/2 years ago and have had radiation and on tamoxifen for over three years. Cancer is what led me to start listening to health podcasts. During the cancer treatments, I put on 5kg (11 pounds) and it all seemed to develop in my midsection. I have tried low-carb and even keto, but can’t seem to get into ketosis no matter what I do. You guys have said many times on your podcast that some women need estrogen to help with weight loss, but I’m wondering if perhaps I need to be eating low-carb AND low-calorie in order to get the best results. When I’ve done keto previous about 8 years ago when I was at a bodybuilding gym, I lost a significant amount of weight very quickly. But I just can’t seem to get there now. I also take antidepressants to help with hot flashes and realize these have a side effect of weight gain. Can you help me? Jacki in Brisbane, Australia KEY QUOTE: “I just keep it simple. When cooking vegetables I'll throw in some bone broth or butter.” — Jimmy Moore MAKE KETO EASIER WITH FBOMB JIMMYLOVESFBOMB FOR 10% OFF YOUR FIRST FOOD ORDER NOTICE OF DISCLOSURE: Paid sponsorship 3. How can I get the benefits that ketosis provides my autoimmune arthritis without the unwanted weight loss that happens when I eat keto? I have been enjoying your podcasts and reading your Keto Clarity book. I started on a ketogenic diet to help with my autoimmune arthritis and I think I've been making some progress. Unfortunately, I’m losing weight and I don’t need to be. I’m 5’2” tall and actually underweight at 91 pounds. My goal is to be at 105 pounds. Despite shoveling down 75% fat in my diet, I just keep losing weight. Tracking my nutrition with an online tracker, it says my calories are higher than are required for me and yet my weight keeps dropping despite the fact I feel good. Should I choose being in ketosis and controlling my arthritis while losing weight or eating a few more carbohydrates to get out of ketosis in order to get back to normal weight again but dealing with the arthritis? Got any suggestions? I'd so love to get back some of my feminine curves again. Karen KETO TALK MAILBOX - How do I need to adjust the macronutrients on my ketogenic diet in the late stages of my pregnancy and while breastfeeding? Should I add more protein? Hi guys, Love the show! You are doing an amazing service, so keep up the good work. I’ve been keto for four months and I’m doing great losing 25 pounds and dropping my A1c from 5.6 to 5.0 in just two months of eating this way. My husband went keto at the same time as me and has lost 40 pounds. Needless to say, our doctor is ecstatic about our results. We’ve heard people joking about being careful when you go keto and normalize your hormones because it might just make getting pregnant easier—well SURPRISE, here comes baby #4! Are there any recommendations about how to adjust the macronutrients of my ketogenic diet for the second and third trimester and even once I started breastfeeding? I usually eat around 80% fat in my diet with protein around 70g and carbs at 20g. I’m definitely making sure I consume at minimum of 2,000 calories daily so I don’t stress my Hashimoto’s or my adrenals that I’ve worked so hard to heal over the past four years. Should I eat a bit more protein as the pregnancy continues? You guys will find this interesting that the way I found out I was pregnant was my ketones suddenly dropped to 0.3 after always registering 1.5-3.0 and on a hunch we did a pregnancy test. Whammo bammo, pregnant. Crazy right? I’m so thankful to be keto-adapted heading into this pregnancy and hoping it will keep my notorious severe morning sickness at bay this time around. Thanks again! And which is more important as a health goal—lowering blood glucose levels or insulin levels? Hey guys, I understand that blood glucose can rise on a ketogenic diet due to the physiologic glucose sparing effect you guys have discussed several times on the podcast. In his new book FAT FOR FUEL, Dr. Joe Mercola shares his solution to this by simply eating more carbs and thus trigger an insulin response to bring the glucose down. Of course, if you eat more carbohydrates in your diet to make this happen, it will invariably kick you out of ketosis. So in light of this, it begs the question: which is worse for you to have—higher glucose levels or higher insulin levels? Is there another way to bring blood glucose down without triggering insulin to go up? Maybe some light exercise would do the trick? Thanks for answering my question. In light of my blood work results, is it possible keto isn’t right for me? If I want longevity, energy, and mental benefits, how should I eat? Hi Jimmy and Adam, Thank you for all that you're putting out there regarding ketogenic living. I first came across you Jimmy when you did a podcast with Dave Asprey a few years back and have listened to all of your Livin’ La Vida Low Carb Show and Keto Talk episodes ever since. I've been experimenting with keto on and off for the past few years. I don't do it for weight loss since I'm a lean 32 year old male at 8% body fat with high muscle mass and in very good shape (I can run a sub-6 minute mile, deadlift 3x my body weight, etc.). I follow keto for constant energy, mental acuity and longevity purposes. When measuring my blood glucose levels while in keto, I find that they're quite high: 100-120 fasting blood glucose and up to 140 postprandial. I'm aware of physiologic insulin resistance, but the numbers nonetheless concern me; I just had blood labs done and my HbA1c was 5.8, up from 5.2 which were my numbers a year ago while on a moderate carb diet. My triglycerides have also gone up from 54 in February on moderate carb to 97 today. My total cholesterol has risen from 180 to 225 but that's to be expected on keto. My testosterone is a bit on the low side for my age at 450, but it’s been this way regardless of whether I'm on keto, moderate carb, or have taken a week off of training (I was hoping keto would raise it). Dr. Dominic D'Agostino acknowledges that for certain people, keto simply isn't the answer. Although I feel healthy eating this way, my blood work results seem to indicate otherwise. Am I one of those people who flourishes on moderate carb eating and the occasional fast and keto just isn't for someone like me? It's worth noting that my mother who is in her mid-60's is in spectacular shape with great lab numbers without ever going to the gym and she has always eaten a carb-laden diet. One more interesting note to share with you is my body composition is identical whether I’m eating keto or high carb. So, with longevity being one of my top priorities alongside stable energy and mental acuity, what nutritional approach do you think I should do to reach my goals? Thanks a lot for your help! Chris 2. Is it possible to create acidosis from your diet and exercise choices? How can you prevent this from happening? Hi guys, Thank you for your work as it's an absolute asset to so many of us. I started doing 2 workouts a day of weight lifting and running or walking. I’ve noticed I started having painful urination as well as my side started hurting recently. When I checked my urine ketone levels several times, they were always extremely dark. After reading a graph on Dr. Andreas Eenfeldt’s website about acidosis, I became concerned. I immediately ate a bunch of carbs from ice cream and other sources to try to deal with this issue and stop the pain by driving down the ketones. I also drank some baking soda mixed with water since I thought this had to do with acidity. Amazingly, 8 hours after doing this I STILL showed ketones on the urine ketone sticks. So then I ate some chili cheese fries bringing my total carb consumption that day to 500g. It's now been 3 days later and my body had never stopped producing ketones. It went to small levels at one point when I skipped my workout for a day. I'm a type 2 diabetic with chronic kidney disease who's used straight keto for about a year and have never seen anything like this. If I have a carb-filled meal, this will usually kick me out of ketosis for 4-5 days. So, have you seen acidosis happen as a result of diet and exercise? What are some things I can do to prevent that from happening again? Thanks for your insights on this! Davis GET A $39 BOTTLE OF OLIVE OIL FOR JUST A BUCK GET YOUR $39 BOTTLE FOR JUST $1 NOTICE OF DISCLOSURE: Paid sponsorship 3. Is there any added benefit to taking one month off from keto annually vs. constantly staying in nutritional ketosis? Hey Jimmy and The Doc, I have listened to most of your Keto Talk podcasts as well as some LLVLC podcasts and they are both informative and entertaining. What I take from hearing people like Dr. Eric Westman, Dr. Ted Naiman and Dr. Nally is that the hormone insulin is what controls and signals the storage or burning of fat and that lower insulin levels (outside of being a Type 1 diabetic) is healthier. It seems that intermittent fasting, keto, and exercise all lower insulin and improve health. Many of the arguments point to the evolution and hunter gatherer hypothesis of storing fat in times of plenty during the spring and summer and then burning stored body fat during the winter and when food was in shortage between animal kills. The problem with the modern-day SAD diet is that there are too many carbs in our diet that leads to elevated insulin levels which then results in insulin resistance and your body is constantly storing fat, never using it in times of need which never come, and leaves the individual perpetually hungry to eat and eat and eat. My question for you guys is this: if we are designed to store and burn fat and alternate from using ketones and glucose as our fuel source, then isn’t this an argument for cycling in and out of ketosis on a regular basis? Since getting keto-adapted takes about 4-6 weeks for most people, why wouldn’t doing 11 months of keto with one month of a non-ketogenic diet be better than eating keto 24/7/365? I have not found any studies on this and I would imagine the change in diet would be good for the body to serve as reset for just one month a year. I know yo-yo dieting is bad for your overall health and that there is a risk of a relapse to your old ways when you get off of keto that could prevent you from going back to it again. But there might be real benefits to this as it probably better resembles how our ancestors evolved in their nutrition and may help reset your body to get better results after long-term ketosis. What do you think? Colin HIGH-FAT LOW-CARB, PERFECT MACROS NOTICE OF DISCLOSURE: Paid sponsorship KETO TALK MAILBOX   - Why does my health seemingly deteriorate when I go too low on carbs and improves again when I add back in rice and other carbohydrates?   Hey Jimmy and The Doc,    I’m loving my new lifestyle change using fasting and a ketogenic diet to address my Hashimoto's and weight loss concerns. I started on New Year’s Day this year and I’m already down 44 pounds and feel fantastic most of the time. However, I have noticed that if I fast too much or keep my carbohydrate intake too low over a week that my health deteriorates with an increase in my level of fatigue, slower metabolism, severe depression, and thyroid symptoms rearing their ugly head. In my research into this, it all seems to point to reverse T3 levels which I’ve found is fixed when I eat a bowl of rice and start eating more carbs again. So how do I continue to lose weight, improve my health, and keep feeling great eating keto without these unwanted side effects? My daughter also suffers from this same thing, so there seems to be something to it. Any thoughts?   Thanks so much,   Lisa JIMMY AND DR. Dear Jimmy and Doc Nally, Thank you for doing what you do. My life has changed thanks to this podcast. I have a quick question you guys: I recently got my Pathway Genomics results and the report said that my genes would benefit from a LOW FAT, higher carb diet. I have been keto for a year and I was shocked to see this. The report suggested my fats should be comprised of 20-25% of my diet, protein 20-25% and carbs 50-55%! I shuddered when I read this. It also said my body can process monounsaturated fats better than animal fats. What gives? Do my genes just not lend themselves to a keto diet? All the best, Esma KEY QUOTE: “If your low-carb ketogenic diet is working, why would you cheat and put your body through that?”  – Jimmy Moore STUDY: Submitted by Dr. Dallas Peak, MD who was taken in by the use of the phrase “benign dietary ketosis” (BDK) to describe nutritional ketosis 1. Why did my symptoms of Raynaud’s syndrome seem to get worse when I started eating keto? Hey Jimmy and The Doc, I went gluten free years ago and Paleo was the next natural step. I have had autoimmune issues my whole life and my doctors couldn’t figure it out. One of them once told me, "we usually only see these symptoms in overweight people", but overweight I am not. When first going Paleo, I made a drastic mistake without knowing it. The Paleo crowd was all about the bananas and potatoes back then so that's what I did. Even though I am not big fans of either of these they were the least offensive carbs and it seemed to help. A few months ago I decided to go with a ketogenic approach doing it the correct way this time. I still have fruit in the house for my kids but I have not touched it. I never had the low-carb flu and within a week was sleeping like a rock for the first time in years despite living the stressful life of being a single mom. Joint pain did not flare up as much and my migraines are not showing up as often. My question for you guys is this: I have always been plagued with Raynaud's syndrome. It lasts all year long, not just in the winter. I have noticed that since I do not feel hungry on a regular basis it is easy to go many hours without food while out running errands without noticing how long it has been. My Raynaud’s then rears it's ugly head and I feel it. I'm not sure if it's going too long on an empty stomach or something else happening, but the Raynaud's is the only thing that has gotten worse since I started eating keto. Do you know why this is happening? I am already taking a magnesium supplement to help. Even if you guys have no solution for me, I will just suck it up buttercup and deal with it as I have in the past because the benefits I am getting from nutritional ketosis far outweigh the cold hands and feet that I have always had to deal with anyway. Listening to Keto Talk, it is very clear to me that you guys have a goal of helping people and getting correct information out there. I am so glad I found your podcast. Thank you both for your time and effort and keep up the great work. Sarah 2. Why did I start experiencing very sore spots on my skin when I decided to cheat on my low-carb, ketogenic diet? Hey Jimmy and The Doc, I recently found your podcast and have greatly enjoyed getting caught up on all the episodes! I have a question that might actually be a new one for you as I haven’t heard it discussed on your show before. I have been eating low-carb, ketogenic with weekly cheat days as Tim Ferriss outlines in his book The Four-Hour Body. After about six months of doing this, I noticed I would wake up with very sore spots on my skin following a cheat day. It seemed to be concentrated on my torso and sometimes on my upper arms, neck, and scalp. This soreness was on the surface of the skin, not the muscles or joints. The best way I can describe it is it felt like a giant bruise that was only painful when you pressed on it. My skin would be so sensitive that I would skip running or other exercise that day because the mere bouncing of my skin was too uncomfortable to bear. The surface area of skin that would be sore seemed to correlate positively with how much crappy carbage I splurged on the previous day. Interestingly, the first areas to become sore were the areas in which I tend to store fat, such as the love handles, and the soreness would radiate out from there. If I had a really obscene cheat day, then even my upper leg skin would get sore. Very surprisingly, this phenomenon did not go away when I went back to the high-carb Standard American Diet for a period of time. It seemed anytime I indulged in something particularly sugary/carby, my skin got sore. This soreness would only subside after a day of eating low-carb keto again. So my questions for you guys is this: What could be causing this? Is it just a rapid-onset generalized edema resulting from a significant increase in carbs? Why did it not begin occurring until a good 6+ months into eating low-carb and why did it persist after I went back on a high-carb diet? Have I permanently altered how my body reacts to carbs by going low-carb for so long? Finally, should I be concerned about this? While trying to find answers to these questions online, I saw this “sore skin” phenomenon mentioned by a couple of people on low-carb diet forums who claimed they never experienced this before going low-carb. But none of these references included any explanations other than "possible edema". Thanks so much for your help and your wonderful podcast! CD JIMMY AND DR. ADAM NALLY’S KETO LIVING SUPPLEMENTS 3. Can Adderall be having an adverse effect on getting into ketosis? And does keto do anything to help improve adult ADHD? Dear Keto Talk hosts, I am a 62-year old female and have been moving to keto through the usual progression—it started 20 years ago trying to eat local and real food, then on to WAPF, then Paleo, and now low-carb, ketogenic consuming 20-40g carbohydrates daily. Most of my carbs come from salad, kefir, cheese, and kombucha. My blood sugars have been coming down but I am still in the high 90s for fasting blood sugar in the morning. I have only seen .5 once on the blood ketone meter. I am trying to figure out what might be preventing ketosis for me and I have a couple of suspects. Because I have some of the MTHFR family of variations, my doctor has me on 1000 mcg of L-methylfolate and adenosyl/hydroxy B12. I am also taking 10 mg daily of Adderall. Would any of these be having an adverse effect on getting into ketosis? And does ketosis have any positive effect on improving adult ADHD? I’d really love to get off of that medication if at all possible. Thanks for any insights you can provide. Stephanie KETO TALK MAILBOX - Why can’t I stay in ketosis eating what seems to be a well-formulated low-carb, moderate protein, high-fat, ketogenic diet? Hey Jimmy and The Doc, I listen to your Keto Talk podcast all the time and I have been doing keto for nearly 2 months. I am 6'7" and weigh 220 pounds with 16% body fat. I started keto for all the health benefits, energy, and disease prevention it provides. I eat about 100g protein, less than 20g carbs, and 200g of fat. This all seems right to me and I am being very strict with it. I get lots of sleep, am not stressed, and have experimented with exercising a little and not doing any exercise. There’s only one problem: I JUST CANT STAY IN KETOSIS! I bought a blood ketone monitor and the highest reading I have seen is 1.2 for a very short 2-day period and most of the time I am less than 0.5. Every morning I wake up I am 0.2 and then it’ll rise to 0.6 mid day and once in awhile I'll get to 0.8 in the evening or sometimes it goes the other way and I'll drop back down to 0.3. I eat bacon and eggs in the morning with coffee, MCT oil, and full fat whipping cream as well as high-fat meats and cheeses or cream cheeses for lunch and supper. The frustrating thing for me is my wife is getting 2.5-3.5 on the ketone meter eating the exact same thing I am. HELP! I hope you have an idea why I can't stay in ketosis. Jimmy and Dr. Fung are the coauthors of the 2016 international bestseller The Complete Guide to Fasting: Heal Your Body Through Intermittent, Alternate-Day, and Extended Fasting and, along with Megan, are happy to provide this podcast as an additional resource for anyone curious about going on a fast to improve their health. And if you’re not already subscribed to the podcast on iTunes, then you can do that and leave a review HERE. Listen in today as Jimmy and Megan answer your questions all about fasting in Episode 23. JIMMY AND DR. ADAM NALLY’S KETO LIVING SUPPLEMENTS KEY QUOTE: “People that have been fasting and are farther along in their journey tend to opt for better quality food choices like eggs that are truly free-range.” – Megan Ramos   Here’s what Jimmy and Dr. Fung talked about in Episode 23: Some special iTunes comments that Jimmy and Megan address at the top of the show TESTIMONIAL:   Jimmy,   I’ve always had troubles with my triglycerides since I gained weight after college. When I had them tested in December, they came back at 4543 mg/dL. These results were so shockingly high that they had to do the tests twice to verify the number! In January I started researching options for lowering my triglycerides and came across intermittent fasting. I eased into it over a two-week period to get acclimated from the sugar withdrawal, along with cutting out all of the bad white foods in my diet. While I was going through this, I came The Compete Guide to Fasting audiobook. After listening, I felt confident that I was on the right track because for once the science actually made sense. So I started adding 36-hour fasts on the weekend and had my triglycerides tested again. The results came back at 748 mg/dL. I’ve also experienced a weight loss of 15 pounds. So, I just wanted to say thanks.  I’m currently listening to Keto Clarity and considering adding a ketogenic diet to my fasting.   Robert WORLD’S 1ST REUSABLE BREATH KETONE ANALYZER NOTICE OF DISCLOSURE: Paid sponsorship     1. What are the specific dangers and concerns of doing a fast without medical supervision? Hey guys, Can you go over the dangers of doing a 7-day distilled water-only fast without any medical supervision? I am on a very tight budget and can’t really afford to go see the doctor to monitor me. When I asked my personal doctor about fasting, he said that I should monitor my urine pH levels and that if they get too acidic to stop the fast. But he didn’t say what level that is. Would you concur with this? I know you can’t endorse doing a fast without medical supervision, but for folks who are going to do it anyway, is there any advice that you can give? Thanks for your help, Margaret KEY QUOTE: “You can test for your level of inflamation, and if it's elevated then both fasting and a ketogenic diet are great anti-inflamatory methodoligies.” – Jimmy Moore   2. Is it possible to heal a food reactivity/allergy like eggs and dairy with a water-only fast? Hey Jimmy and Megan, I really really really want to permanently heal my reactivity to eggs where I experience itchy eyes, nose, lips, along with a runny nose. And I’ve done every friggin’ thing under the sun food-wise: supplements, keto, autoimmune protocol, Paleo, and fasting. At some point, my reaction to eggs inevitably returns and I need to give them up for a while. Have you seen people who have fasted permanently find success healing their reactivity to eggs and dairy? Success in my world means no symptoms or inflammation-related weight gain. I haven’t attempted a water-only fast yet and this is the next thing I would like to try. I realize this is probably going to be a long-term project and not something I’m going to knock out in two weeks. Thank you all for the encouragement and realism: progress, not perfection is my motto now. Take care and thanks again, Sheila RESERVE YOUR TICKETS AT KETOFEST.COM NOTICE OF DISCLOSURE: Paid sponsorship 3. Is it normal to experience stomach pain that disrupts sleep when fasting for more than 24 hours? Hey guys, I love listening to Fasting Talk and reading your book. I’ve been IF for a year now. Started with 16/8 and then have been doing 18/6 for a long time. I’ve done a few 24 hour fasts, a 48 hour fast, and most recently a 42 hour fast for the purposes of fat loss. My question for you guys is this: Is it common to get stomach pain when fasting for more than 24 hours? It's not hunger pangs, but feels like gastritis pain. In fact, the pain wakes me up at night it’s so bad. I don’t feel this pain when I’m eating and I only find relief from it while fasting when I drink spiced tea. Have you had any IDM patients deal with anything like this? Thank you, Monika 4. Does combining a ketogenic diet with intermittent fasting cause a delay in the menstrual cycle or even missing a period? Hi Jimmy and Megan, I have been doing IF and keto for about a month and half and I love the combination because it allows me to enjoy real food when I eat and gives me excellent mental clarity. My purpose in IF and keto is to prevent Type 2 diabetes since my A1c has been 5.8 the past couple of years. I’m already seeing my blood sugar and A1c drop, so I’m very happy with my nutritional choices. However, I do have a concern that I’ve noticed. Before my IF and keto protocol, my periods usually come every 38 days. But since I changed my diet and added fasting, it has been 46 days since my last menstrual cycle and I still have no period. Does the combination of IF and keto cause a delay in the menstrual cycle or even missing a cycle? Keto Talk and Fasting Talk are my favorite podcasts and they’ve helped me so much. Thank you for your consideration of my question. Alice GIVE YOUR ELECTROLYTES A SUGAR-FREE BOOST USE COUPON CODE “LLVLC” FOR $10 OFF NOTICE OF DISCLOSURE: Paid sponsorship 5. Is there a degree or certification for ketogenic diets and fasting that you can recommend to guide clients nutritionally? Hi Jimmy and Megan, I'm a personal trainer and want to go to school to become a registered dietician. But since my desire is to promote the ketogenic diet, I’m concerned seeing so many RDs facing backlash and possibly losing their license for going "off-script.” As a personal trainer, we are supposed to educate our clients on how to eat, but all they promote is the government-recommended low-fat diet. I also want to promote fasting to my clients, but I’m not sure whether there is a degree or certification I could obtain to properly guide my clients. RESERVE YOUR TICKETS TODAY! KETOFEST.COM NOTICE OF DISCLOSURE: Paid sponsorship - Is there concern about very high levels of bile acid from a high-fat ketogenic diet leading to an increased cancer risk? Hi Jimmy and Adam, I was listening to Dr. Rhonda Patrick on Joe Rogan’s podcast where she mentioned that bile acid, namely, deoxycholic acid, is necessary to emulsify fat for absorption in the intestine and that a high consumption of fat – over 60% of calories - on a regular basis means the body is subject to higher levels of this acid. She stated outright that deoxycholic acid in higher than usual quantities causes damage to the DNA, even going so far as describing it as carcinogenic. Dr. Patrick noted that a ketogenic diet will ultimately result in the failure of the enzymes whose function is to repair DNA and thus will put the person at greater risk of cancer. I am a Type 2 diabetic and have maintained a ketogenic diet for the past year. I was persuaded to adopt this diet by reading Keto Clarity and am regularly in a state of nutritional ketosis. My last HbA1c was 5.2% and my fasting insulin level was 4. I can’t imagine adopting some other approach despite the concerns about the higher levels of deoxycholic acid required to emulsify the fat. But is Dr. Patrick correct in her assessment of this cancer risk with keto? Thanks for your help! Rob from Australia STUDY: Rethinking nutrition labelling: Food is not just the sum of its nutrients 1. How do you handle dealing with hypoglycemic episode when you go on a ketogenic diet? Does adding in carbs resolve the issue? Hi Jimmy and the Doc! Thanks for a great podcast! I really enjoy the information, and particularly when The Doc geeks out on us. My question for you guys is about hypoglycemia. If a person starting keto experiences a hypoglycemic episode, what’s the best way to deal with it? I can do 2-3 days of a keto diet but then on the 3rd or 4th morning I wake up with low blood sugar levels and experience nausea, feeling shaky, unfocused, and sometimes seeing brown spots. My blood glucose dips into the 40s and resolves after eating an apple, or some raisins, or some sweet potato. But then I feel like crap for the whole day. I don’t get this reaction when I simply eat lower carb with some sweet potatoes or fruit during the day. But I really want to experience all the full benefits of being ketogenic. I know I can't possibly be the only one who struggles with this. Thanks and keep up the good work! Marie KEY QUOTE: “If you make a change in your diet that goes against the conventional wisdom of the medical community and it gets results, they can't help but pay attention to what you're doing .”  – Jimmy Moore 2. What is inflammation and why is it the evil bogeyman in our health? How exactly does a ketogenic diet lower inflammation? Hey guys, The keto community tends to throw around the topic of inflammation A LOT without much explanation about what it is. I think I know what it means, but I'm not 100% sure and I would venture to guess that most people don't. Can you address this on the podcast and how exactly a ketogenic diet helps lower it? Thanks for your help, Rob HIGH-FAT LOW-CARB, PERFECT MACROS NOTICE OF DISCLOSURE: Paid sponsorship 3. Does consuming fermented dairy like cultured butter cause a rise in insulin to cause hunger? And will eating this kick me out of ketosis? Hi Jimmy and the Doc, I love your show! Although I’ve been at a healthy weight all my life, I’ve decided to follow a ketogenic diet to have a more positive relationship with food and to balance my moods. Your podcast has greatly inspired me! I recently bought a pack of cultured butter at the grocery store and after having some for the first time, I noticed that I was craving more of it which usually never happens when I consume fat. After doing some research I discovered that fermented dairy products tend to have a higher glycemic index than non-fermented. What is the impact of cultured butter on the hormones that control hunger and cravings? And could consuming fermented dairy products knock me out of ketosis? Valerie from Ontario, Canada KETO TALK MAILBOX - Is it common knowledge that the AMA promotes ketosis for a greater sense of well-being and pain reduction at the end of life? Hey Jimmy and Adam, I just lost my grandfather to pancreatic cancer. He chose to have no artificial nutrition through a feeding tube and IV in the last few days of his life. I believe that this allowed him to go into ketosis and eased his passing. I also found a reference to ketosis being beneficial at the end of life in an American Medical Association (AMA) publication. In researching this further, I found the following statement in the Education for Physicians on End-of-life Care Handbook by the AMA: "Educate families about the studies that demonstrate that parenteral or enteral feeding of patients at the end of their lives neither improves symptom control nor lengthens life. Help them to understand that anorexia may be protective, as the resulting ketosis can lead to a greater sense of well-being and diminish pain." So my questions for you guys is this: Is this common knowledge in the medical community in general? We were never told this by any of my grandfather’s medical caretakers and instead were encouraged to have him drink Boost with 20-30g sugar/serving right to the end. In light of this, could exogenous ketones have helped him ease the pain more and remain lucid enough to engage with the family a period of time longer before passing? I really hope that you can share about this on Keto Talk. At least this community may be able to help a dying loved one by NOT pushing sugary drinks on them even when the nurses and doctors insist. Or possibly asking for no dextrose in their IV, especially if the patient has already said that he is ready to pass. It may be helpful to share the AMA reference with family members and caregivers, and explain what ketosis is and that the patient may not be feeling hunger. Those of us who have experienced ketosis know this firsthand. It takes courage to go against mainstream thinking, especially in the world of medicine and health. I appreciate that you do it every day with your podcasts, blogs, and books. Why did I turn yellow and feel unwell at the end of a 7-day fast? Dear Jimmy and Megan, I recently completed my first 7-day fast and I felt GREAT with tons of energy. I would have continued, but I literally turned yellow and looked desiccated, haggard and unwell. I’ve completed a number of 4-5 day fasts in the past with much less of a problem than anything like this. Have you run across this in the IDM clinic and should I push through and hope it will this improve with time? I don’t have diabetes or any other underlying medical problems. Thanks! Elizabeth 2. Does fasting raise blood pressure levels? Hi guys, For the last month, I have been doing the 5:2 version of fasting as a warm-up for some of the protocols you set out in your fasting book. I’m 46, not diabetic but I am overweight with a BMI of 28, and I’m hoping fasting will prevent the development of Type 2 diabetes, lead to weight loss, and re-calibrate my eating habits. So far I’ve lost 4 pounds, my clothes are looser, and I no longer feel polluted inside. Fasting days are not always easy, especially in this cold northern England climate, but I still look forward to them! I have recently started having significantly higher blood pressure readings than usual (138/75 upon waking). I’m not completely sure why this is happening, but I did recently complete a course of prednisone for asthma and a chest infection. I also have a busy job with two lively young children. Enough said, right? But I have heard from people on a 5:2 fasting forum that fasting itself may have caused my elevated blood pressure. Is it true that fasting leads to an increase in blood pressure levels? Thank you for the book and the podcast. I’ve learned so much from both and use them to inspire me when fasting gets hard. Is there a difference between drinking distilled water and filtered water when you are on a water fast? Hey guys, What’s the difference between drinking distilled water vs. filtered water on a water-only fast? Is there any benefit to using one over the other? Thanks for your help! Jane JIMMY AND DR. ADAM NALLY’S KETO LIVING SUPPLEMENTS KEY QUOTE: “My blood pressure went down significantly while fasting, so did blood sugar, insulin and all of the markers you would expect.” – Jimmy Moore 4. Should I be concerned about my appetite dropping on feasting days to match my fasting days during an intermittent fast? Hi Jimmy and Megan, I love listening to Fasting Talk and I have a question for you guys. I’ve just started alternate day fasting and I’m fasting on 500 calories (M, W and F) and then eating normally the other 4 days. It’s going pretty well for me so far, but I’m finding that on the “normal eating” days my appetite has reduced a fair bit and I’m not wanting to eat the same amount as I did prior to beginning alternate day fasting. My concern is if I reduce the amount of food I eat to fit with my lowering appetite levels that it will begin to creep downward to where it is on my non-fasting days. Am I at risk for slowing down my metabolism doing this? As someone who has spent most of her life as a yo-yo dieter, I’m really worried about rebound weight gain from doing this. Can you offer any tips on what I can do to prevent this from happening? I am loving alternate day fasting and really getting into the groove with it. Help me optimize the results I’ll get from it. Thanks for this great podcast…it’s at the top of my listening list! Leanne in New Zealand WORLD’S 1ST REUSABLE BREATH KETONE ANALYZER NOTICE OF DISCLOSURE: Paid sponsorship 5. Do the watery stools/diarrhea that can happen during and after a fast be an indication of and come from gut bacteria dying off? Hi Jimmy and Megan, I am one of those people who ends up with watery stools during and after I break a fast. I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about why. I know Jimmy mentioned that he was also puzzled as to what is coming out when nothing is going in during an extended fast. Is it possible that some of the bowel bacteria (which I understand make up a good deal of stool) are dying from not being fed? And since they are dead, they are eliminated from the body while extended fasting? It certainly smells like something died in there. I also wonder whether some of the health improvements of fasting occur because of the elimination of carb-loving bacteria and replacing them with the ones that survive better while fasting. I imagine those are the bacteria that would have thrived inside our ancient ancestors who regularly fasted. Is there any merit to my theory? Thanks for the new podcast, I never miss it! Can I fast if I am still nursing and would an intermittent fast be better than extended fasting for the milk?   Hi guys!    I’m excited to see this podcast because I have had so many questions about fasting. Currently I am nursing and most likely will be for another year. Can I still fast? I’m wondering about how fasting affects the milk with all the detoxing that takes place? Would an intermittent fast be better than longer fasts while I’m nursing? I’m currently eating Paleo with white potatoes, but I’m ready to switch over to a ketogenic diet with intermittent fasting using Bulletproof tea with gelatin.   Thanks for your advice!    Kendall  GET A $39 BOTTLE OF OLIVE OIL FOR JUST A BUCK GET YOUR $39 BOTTLE FOR JUST $1 NOTICE OF DISCLOSURE: Paid sponsorship   2. Can I fast for a couple of days prior to running a marathon to more efficiently burn fat for fuel during the race?   Hey Jimmy and Megan,   Thanks for doing Fasting Talk. It’s been a useful, professional, and inspirational guide in building my fasting knowledge. I made my first fasting attempt this week and made it 48 hours with my typical intense workouts (hard running on one day and swimming the next day) just to see what would happen. To my surprise, I had lots of energy to power through my workouts. So my question for you guys is this: Is it a good idea to fast for two days prior to running a marathon? My goal is to efficiently burn fat for fuel during the race, so will this strategy help me?   Thanks for take the time to answer my question.   Adriana JIMMY AND DR. ADAM NALLY’S KETO LIVING SUPPLEMENTS   3. What does true hunger feel like when you are fasting?   Jimmy and Megan,   I love the show, thank you for all of your hard work with it! My question is a simple one: What does REAL hunger supposed to feel like during a fast?    Thanks again for your work!    Catherine WORLD’S 1ST REUSABLE BREATH KETONE ANALYZER NOTICE OF DISCLOSURE: Paid sponsorship   4. Does pain symptom improvement while extended fasting mean the damaged cells are removed or is it simply the inflammation going down?   Hey guys,   I have been suffering with awful post nasal drip for over a year along with a sore Achilles heel and I thought my running career was over (I’m a long distance runner and keto athlete). I began fasting in January consuming water, tea, and bone broth. By the 36-hour, my post nasal drip had vanished and some tooth pain I was having had disappeared as well. By Day 5, my Achilles pain was 50% more tolerable. I felt so good on Day 7 that I continued my fast. I’m currently on Day 9 and ran 10 miles yesterday. I noticed my Achilles pain was minimal during that run and the morning stiffness I had been experiencing has vanished. Finally, my nagging tennis elbow in my right arm is now pain-free. Does this mean that the fast has perhaps eaten all the damaged cells that were causing all these symptoms? Or is it more likely that my inflammation is down significantly as a result of the fasting to allow healing?   Fasting ROCKS and thanks SO much for your work sharing about it! I’m so excited about this podcast and The Complete Guide To Fasting. THANK YOU!   Theresa    5. Does black coffee activate enzymes in the liver that prevent someone who drinks it during a fast to experience the full benefits?   Hey guys,   Love this podcast! Thank you for all you are doing for people all over the world! Keep up the great work. I was curious, I heard one of your fellow podcasters Dr. Rhonda Patrick (Find My Fitness podcast) state that even black coffee activates some enzymes in the liver. She noted that this means technically a fast that allows for black coffee is not a true fast. Personally, I feel I get the benefits of my 24 and 36 hour fasts even with my black coffee. My question for you is this: In light of this information from Dr. Patrick, can we still experience autophagy and other fasting benefits while drinking coffee? Or do we only get these benefits from a water-only fast?    Thank you!   Kyle RESERVE YOUR TICKETS AT KETOFEST.COM NOTICE OF DISCLOSURE: Paid sponsorship iTunes review: LINKS MENTIONED IN EPISODE 20 – SUPPORT OUR SPONSOR: Get the new lemon-lime flavored Jigsaw Electrolyte Supreme supplement (Get $10 off your order with coupon code “LLVLC”) – SUPPORT OUR SPONSOR: The world’s freshest and most flavorful artisanal olive oils. Get your $39 bottle for just $1. – JIMMY AND DR. Is it my thyroid detoxing or something else? Hello Jimmy and Megan! I’m now 4 1/2 days into my first ever 7-day water fast. Thanks to The Complete Guide to Fasting, I was well-prepared and I managed the first two days just fine and the hunger pangs are all but gone now. I’m sleeping soundly, and my daily energy levels are sufficient enough to handle my normal activities, but I don’t feel like there’s enough gas in the tank for my normal exercise routines. I do have a few worrisome symptom that I wanted to ask you about. I’ve noticed a tight feeling in my throat starting in the morning of Day 3. It’s located around the hollow of my neck just at and above the level of my collar bone. It’s actually something I used to feel all the time, before I adopted a cleaner way of eating over a year ago and that sensation has been gone for several months. But now it’s back with a vengeance since I commenced extended fasting. It seems to be where I think my thyroid is, so of course I’m wondering if my thyroid is suffering or just detoxing and getting healthy and strong again. Any ideas about what might be going on? Bless you for resurrecting the important tool of fasting! I had all but given up on shedding these extra 10 pounds that suddenly appeared a couple years ago. I’m thrilled about reforming my eating habits, improving my blood sugar, and EASILY eliminating wheat and artificial sweeteners, and of course the weight loss. Would limiting my fasting to non-training days be best for someone like me doing Brazilian jiu jitsu? Hey Jimmy and Megan, About two years ago I was living a sedentary lifestyle and weighed 275 pounds at 5'9". Now I'm down to 190 pounds after a lot of hard work and not drastically changing my eating habits other than cutting out sodas, cakes, and other sugary snacks. I'm what you might call a "fatthlete" (fat athlete). I train Brazilian jiu jitsu five days a week and I'm a little worried about fasting because from what I understand about it vigorous physical activity can cause problems for people. What are your thoughts on circadian fasting or fasting only on days I don't train? Would those be better fasting options for me? Thank you in advance for your advice, James 4. Is it okay to engage in a fast post-surgery? What are the advantages and disadvantages? Hi guys, I’m so glad I found Fasting Talk. I already listened to Keto Talk and this new podcast makes my life complete. What I want to know about is if there are any guidelines for fasting after surgery. Is there a time period when it’s not advisable to fast post-op? Or does it depend of the surgery? I had my appendix out just before Christmas and while I felt fine doing a 40-hour fast in the week afterwards, my husband got rather anxious about me doing this. I have been doing a 20-4 intermittent fast most days for the last year with occasional longer fasts. But I haven’t found any information about fasting post-surgery anywhere. Can you fast consuming green vegetable juice and coconut water? How about with the Master cleanse? Hi guys, I’m curious to know if you would ever recommend fasting on green vegetable juice and coconut water? Also, I’ve heard about a lot of people having success doing the Master cleanse which uses lemons and maple syrup? I know the latter has a lot of sugar but maybe this works best for people who are more insulin sensitive. Any thoughts on this? I had improved blood pressure, amazing mental clarity and even ran my fastest 5K ever. Wow! I’m going to keep extended fasting as part of my routine along with regular intermittent fasting. I have a question for you guys that I haven’t heard addressed yet. Other than measuring changes in blood glucose and ketone levels, how would someone know they are improving their insulin resistance? Are there ways you quantify this in your patients at IDM?   Thanks so much for all that you do.  I am so very grateful that I found you guys!   Kate RESERVE YOUR TICKETS AT KETOFEST.COM NOTICE OF DISCLOSURE: Paid sponsorship   1. What are the hormone improvements and adaptations that take place doing shorter fasts of 24-36 hours?   Dear Jimmy and Megan,   I have read Keto Clarity, The Obesity Code and The Complete Guide to Fasting, so thanks for all these great resources. In The Obesity Code, Dr. Fung writes about a lot of adaptations that happen during fasting including a rise in epinephrine. But according to the book, those adaptations do not kick in until around Day 3 or 4 of extended fasting. So what I want to know is what hormonal improvements or adaptations take place during an intermittent or alternate day fasting period of 24-36 hours?   Keep up the great work!  I’ve been intermittent fasting for 10 weeks and I’m down 20 pounds!   Thanks,   Ari GIVE YOUR ELECTROLYTES A SUGAR-FREE BOOST USE COUPON CODE “LLVLC” FOR $10 OFF NOTICE OF DISCLOSURE: Paid sponsorship   2. Why am I not getting the same benefits from fasting now that had I previously when I fasted? What can I do about it?   Hey Jimmy and Megan,   Many years ago, I would regularly fast twice weekly for 24 hours at a time. I experienced improved energy, weight loss, improved body composition, and lower inflammation levels. I then fell off the wagon for a few years with changes in employment and other life circumstances. But in recent months I have started fasting again and follow a ketogenic diet when I’m feasting. But I’ve noticed since coming back to fasting again that the amazing benefits that I had previously aren’t happening. Do you have any recommendations for someone like me who has seen the positive impact of fasting before and is not seeing it now? Why is this happening?   Thanks so much for answering my question. I am loving the new podcast…it's so motivating!   Warm regards,   Christine from Australia KEY QUOTE: "Even if you're eating a low-carb ketogenic diet, it's still a good idea to give your pancreas a break every now and then." – Jimmy Moore   3. Which fasting protocol is best for weight loss? How do you lose weight doing IF? How long before you burn stored body fat while extended fasting?   Dear Jimmy and Megan,   Thank you for creating this podcast on fasting. My question for you is about weight loss. What is the best fasting strategy for losing weight? I’ve heard that when you fast, it takes about 24-36 hours for your glycogen stores in the liver to become completely depleted and then you begin to burn your own stored body fat for energy. If that's true, then intermittent fasting would seemingly not work for losing weight because after about 16-20 hours of IF you start eating again. So how is it possible to lose weight on IF? Thus, it seems that extended fasting would be better than IF for the purposes of weight loss. Am I right? And how long does it take before you start losing stored body fat during fasting and not just water weight?   Thank you so much. I just listened to your audiobook for The Complete Guide To Fasting. What are the signs of electrolyte imbalance during a fast and what are your best tips for replenishing these electrolytes on a water-only extended fast?   Hi Jimmy and Megan,   I have engaged in extended water fasting twice—one 5-day fast and one 8-day fast. Interestingly, I experienced brain fog and tiredness throughout these fasts and I’m thinking I might be having issues with keeping my electrolytes in balance. So what are your very best tips for replenishing electrolytes during an extended water fast? And what are the signs to look for that electrolytes are out of whack?   I’m planning on doing an even longer fast the next time and your advice is appreciated. I took a multivitamin, fish oil, lite salt (for the sodium and potassium), and Himalayan rock sea salt. Thank you for your help!   Adam   5. Why don’t you recommend coffee enemas during an extended fasting for the added cleansing benefits it provides?   Hey guys,   Why don't you recommend people to use enemas during their fasting? Coffee enemas are highly recommended by people like Dr. Nicholas Gonzales and others for cancer, cleansing the liver, and more?   Great show!   Diana JIMMY AND DR. I am a Mental health clinician and am one course short of finishing my Masters of Health Administration. I live in Victoria which is on Vancouver Island in British Columbia. Like most people, I have tried everything to “stay healthy” and lose weight. But nothing really worked for long. The scientific evidence that Dr Jason Fung presented in the Obesity Code really made sense to me and I began the IDM program at the end of November 2016. I feel like I have found the answer I was looking for and my life will never be the same! Hey Jimmy and Megan, Fasting has totally changed my life, so thank you for sharing on this podcast. I have a few questions for you that I would love to hear the answers to. How often can you engage in extended fasts of five or more days? And how can I be sure that I don’t regain all the weight I lose while on an extended fast? Thanks for your help, KEY QUOTE: “In our clinic we work on fasting first and diet second. Fasting helps regulate hunger hormones then you make better food choices. ” – Megan Ramos Natalia 2. Why did my fasting blood glucose spike on the day after an alternate day fast? Does eating this Mercola-styled meal actually enhance your fasting? Hey guys, I am really enjoying Fasting Talk. I love and appreciate Dr. Fung's ability to relate info in a way that anyone can understand. And, of course, I have listened to you, Jimmy, for a long time. I am loving Megan Ramos and look forward to hearing more from her on upcoming episodes. My question for you guys is this: I practice alternate day fasting and I take my blood sugar reading the morning after a fasting day. Much to my surprise, my last reading jumped 25 points! I have read that sometimes this happens when hormones such as cortisol, glucagon, and epinephrine are released causing the liver to release glucose. Incidentally, I did eat a small meal of 3 ounces of ham and 8 ounces green beans about 3-4 before bed, so possibly that is the culprit in my higher reading. Dr. Joe Marcela was the one who recommended eating a meal consisting of 500 calories or less with 20-30g protein and 8 ounces of green vegetable to enhance my fasting so I thought I’d give it a try. What would be the benefits of fasting for only two days when it seems the most results coming after that? Hey Jimmy and Megan, Thanks for the awesomely informative podcast! I'm pretty familiar with keto, but I’m absolutely clueless about fasting. I have a question for you guys to address today about fasting. Several things seem to spike up during the first few days of fasting before going down again. Doesn't this mean that doing a two-day fast means you are only getting the worst part of the fasting experience? Don’t people who do this short of a fast deny themselves of seeing the ultimate benefits of seeing these things coming back down again and feeling good on the other side? Why did I experience hypoglycemia in Day 2 of an extended fast? What can I do to prevent this from happening again? Hi guys, I've read The Complete Guide to Fasting and have been loving the Fasting Talk podcast. As a science teacher, I really appreciate how you present the information. I initiated what I wanted to be a four-day fast and maybe longer recently. I made it to the 32-hour mark before experiencing signs of hypoglycemia. I was shaky, dizzy, faint, and very weak despite my heart rate at around 100 bpm. When I checked my blood sugar, it was down to 33. Because I didn’t feel safe to drive at the moment, I decided to drink 8 ounces of pomegranate juice since that was the only thing I could find to bring my blood sugar back up. I assume it improved because the symptoms decreased a bit and I made it to work safely. I'm generally healthy except for elevated cholesterol and a bit of excess weight and I'm hoping these things will be fixed by fasting and keto. Any thoughts on what happened here and should I be concerned? If I try to do an extended fast again, do you have any tips to prevent this the next time? Thanks for your help! Heather JIMMY AND DR. I'm on my second time through a 6 day cycle of 3 days fasting followed by 3 days feasting. Before I started, I was eating keto to satiety and slowly gaining weight. I was eating a lot at night, eating lots of macadamias, and drinking wine. So, I was primed for a change. My first day of a 3-day fast started with keto coffee (lots of coconut oil and a pinch of cayenne). Midday I had a mug of bone broth with a Tbsp of butter melted in it. At night I went right for salt-water with a dash of Chipotle chili pepper powder. I use Morton lite-salt so I can get some Potassium. On the second and third days of the fast I only drank black coffee and my hot salt-water concoction. At the end of the 3-day fast my fingers were getting cold but I had lost 7 pounds. I broke the fast with a handful of nuts and then a big meal after about 30 minutes. I feasted for 3 days eating 2 meals a day within a 6-hour window for an 18-hour intermittent fast. I know I overate a couple times with plenty of butter and macadamia nuts for lots of fat—lots. I was poaching burgers in butter, eating rib eye steaks, fried fish with keto breading, and an entire jar of tartar sauce. Still, I didn't gain an ounce in the 3 days that I feasted. Yesterday was my first day back to fasting. I started the day with keto coffee again, and my salt-water concoction with 1 tbsp of butter, and a couple more of those without the butter later in the day. This morning I had lost another 3 pounds. So, that's 10 pounds in 7 days—the most weight I've ever lost in a week. Ever. Also, last night my blood sugar was the lowest I've ever recorded it at 66. The first day of fasting is challenging, even the second time around. Last night I was dreaming of fast food. But, I got over it, and it was smooth sailing again here on Day 2. This pattern seems to really be working for me and I plan to continue on this path until it stops working. Thanks for the great advice. You guys are awesome. Does eating a small amount of food in the middle of an extended fast impact my insulin levels and fasting efforts? Hey Jimmy and Megan, I love The Complete Guide to Fasting and have learned so much from it and your Fasting Talk podcast. I have a question for you guys. I started my fast on Thursday at 7:30pm and went until 11:30pm Saturday temporarily breaking the fast with 1 Tbs of natural peanut butter and a few bites of brussels sprouts. Then I decided to fast all day Sunday throughTuesday at 7:30 PM. All in all, it was a total of five days with that little bit of food. What if anything did that food break do to my insulin levels and fasting efforts? I have three small children and can’t check my insulin levels, so any insights you can provide would be greatly appreciated. All the best, Brieanne 2. Can someone with bulimia or binge eating disorder engage in fasting? Would this be beneficial or detrimental towards their efforts of overcoming it? Dear Jimmy and Megan, I have read your book on fasting and it was so full of great knowledge that I am grateful for. I am currently breastfeeding, so I am not fasting right now. But I am looking forward to start fasting soon. In your book I took notice of how people with eating disorders, specifically anorexia, shouldn't be fasting and this makes a lot sense. But what about people who have bulimia and binge eating disorder? Should they also steer clear of fasting? Are there any physical or hormonal benefits to be gained for someone like this to start fasting or will this simply perpetuate the binging behavior. Thanks for this podcast and for your amazing work! Teresa JIMMY AND DR. ADAM NALLY’S KETO LIVING SUPPLEMENTS 3. Is Diurnal Fasting with no food or beverages during daylight hours a viable option for fasting? Can you guys talk about the health effects of what is known as Diurnal Fasting where you engage in complete abstinence from food and beverages during daylight hours? Is this a good way to fast and are there any potential downfalls to doing it this way as compared to what you teach in the IDM clinic? Thank you, Catherine 4. How will I know when I am fat-adapted enough to push my fasting periods beyond intermittent fasting? I have been doing some form of LCHF/keto since August 2016 and have lost 30 pounds. I've been following the mantra to only eat when I’m hungry which is how I started unintentionally intermittent fasting. Most days I end up doing 18:6 but just can't get past 20 hours. I hear people say to get fully fat-adapted before trying longer fasting, so how will I know when I am there? When it's time to eat, EAT.” – Nadia C. Brito Pateguana, ND Here’s what Jimmy, Megan, and Dr. Pateguana talked about in Episode 13: FEEDBACK FROM A LISTENER: Hello Jimmy and Megan, I think I know why people say that women cannot fast. I used to be a woman who struggled with fasting but it was because I was making one major mistake that is more common among women and less common among men. Women are much more likely to under-eat by a significant amount of calories, then they overtrain in their workouts, and on top of that try to incorporate fasting into their health strategy. When you under-eat and also fast, the body thinks you are starving and I have heard Dr. Fung speak about this inducing starvation mode. Would you please underscore to your female listeners in particular that if you eat an adequate number of calories when you are feeding that fasting is not only fine but it can actually help to reset your circadian rhythm and other bodily functions? It has helped my body balance my hormones in a way that even nutritional ketosis could not on its own. I would love to start a women's fasting group on Facebook and I hope I can invite you all to join. Thanks again for this great podcast. Most sincerely, Airia (aka Keto Sister) WORLD’S 1ST REUSABLE BREATH KETONE ANALYZER NOTICE OF DISCLOSURE: Paid sponsorship 1. Why did I get extreme nausea in the midst of my extended fast? Hi Jimmy and Megan, I’m a 56-year old woman who started fasting with a goal of lowering my blood sugar and losing weight. I just finished a 24-day water and black coffee fast and ended my goal of 30 days because of extreme nausea. By Day 8, I started to drag a bit and so I began drinking some homemade bone broth. But then I became nauseous from drinking the broth a couple of days later and ditched that. A few days after that the coffee I was drinking made me nauseous, too. By Day 15, I was only drinking water and pushed my way to Day 24 before ending it. Why did I have such extreme nausea while fasting? Thank you for helping me with this! Corinne KEY QUOTE: “Some people that have more damaged metabolism have a harder time getting into ketosis, and that can cause nausea. ” – Megan Ramos 2. Does fasting make the symptoms of the autoimmune disease Hashimoto’s better or worse? Hi Jimmy and Megan, From what I read about fasting, it seems to be a potential therapy for autoimmune conditions. But thyroid specialist and neurologist Dr. Datis Kharrazian says that one of the 10 mistakes that Hashimoto’s patients make is the following: “When blood sugar gets too low it raises the inflammatory messenger IL-6 and promotes autoimmune flare-ups. Symptoms of low blood sugar are most noticeable between meals or if you skip meals and include shakiness, blurred vision, crankiness and irritability, and loss of function. If you feel a jump in your function and energy after eating it confirms your blood sugar was low—when your blood sugar is stable the only thing you should feel after eating is not hungry. Constantly skipping breakfast and missing meals will aggravate your autoimmune response and promote autoimmune flare-ups.” I know Dr. Fung has said there is no impact to the thyroid when fasting. But do we know what impact fasting has on Hashimoto’s? It seems the autoimmune disease is made worse by fasting, not better. I am under the care of a functional medicine doctor and have adopted all of his proposed lifestyle changes to heal my Hashimoto’s. I tried a two-day fast and saw ketones rise to 7.7 mmol and blood glucose drop to 58 before I broke the fast. It was a water-only fast with sea salt and occasional bone broth. Two days later, I didn’t feel great and developed a sore throat with excessive sleeping. Did I have a flare up of my Hashimoto’s from fasting? Thanks, Maria 3. Does fasting lead to the development of the “keto rash?” Hi Jimmy and Megan, I have been in nutritional ketosis for over two years and have successfully trained for and ran in two marathons over the past year in a fasted state. I have read The Complete Guide To Fasting and have undertaken my first extended fast which lasted four days. During the fast I had a recurrence of what appears to be a so-called “keto rash” which I have had on and off since I've been eating ketogenic. I am wondering if Dr. Fung has seen this in his fasting and ketogenic patients and what could be causing this. Is this something to be concerned about when fasting? Kind regards, Melissa in Australia GIVE YOUR ELECTROLYTES A SUGAR-FREE BOOST USE COUPON CODE “LLVLC” FOR $10 OFF NOTICE OF DISCLOSURE: Paid sponsorship 4. What is the shortest fasting time for getting the autophagic benefits of fasting and do adding in nutrients negatively impact autophagy? Hey guys, I was afraid of dealing with hunger and stressful work situations at the same time if I fasted. But hearing Jimmy talk about drinking kombucha and bone broth during his fast was my "aha" moment! And I have now lost 14 pounds in 6 days doing intermittent fasting for 24 hour while enjoying coffee with cream and Perrier eating only one low-carb meal a day. But I am interested in getting the benefits of autophagy with my fasting. So I have a few questions about this: 1) What's the shortest fasting window to still trigger significant autophagy? 2) Do MCT oil, small amounts of heavy cream, coffee, bone both or sparkling water negatively impact autophagy? Thanks guys! Melodie 5. Is it advisable for someone who is not overweight to engage in a fast? Hi Jimmy and Megan, Fasting seems to be most helpful for obesity and diabetes control. But there are so many other benefits of fasting that are extremely crucial for all of us, not just those with weight and blood sugar issues. I am in the minority and feel like a minority because I am not overweight and I have pretty much have been the same weight forever. What kind of fasting if any would be advised for someone like me who is not dealing with excess weight but would like to get the other benefits of fasting such us immune system reset? It seems to me our ancestors, who were not overweight, were fasting without any major negative impact on their health. Is fasting just for overweight people? Thank you for all you do, Maria KEY QUOTE: “When you're losing fat from fasting, it's not that you've reduced calories, it's the fact that you've reduced insulin and the fat can be released.” – Jimmy Moore 6. Isn’t the half-pound of body fat you lose daily while fasting simply “calories out?” Hey Jimmy and Megan, Dr. Fung has thoroughly debunked the calories in, calories out model numerous times. But when he talks about the two compartment model, he notes that the fact that a pound of fat contains about 3500 calories of energy. So while fasting you can lose about half a pound of body fat a day. So my question to you is this: Wouldn’t that be considered "calories out?” If so, then is the “calories out” equation different from the “calories in” one? Hey guys, I greatly enjoyed reading The Complete Guide to Fasting and I love this new podcast. My question for you guys is regarding the use of fiber while fasting. What is your opinion about taking fiber-based supplement powders that are devoid of any sugar or artificial sweeteners? I typically take a combination of different kinds of fibers like inulin, acacia, glucomannan, psyllium, and flax. I did not see this addressed in your book. I've done four extended supervised water fasts and each time I've been able to get great blood pressure numbers without the need for medication. Unfortunately, over time, my high blood pressure comes back probably because I haven't cleaned up my diet. I would love to hear more about how to keep the numbers down.   Thanks,   Erik   Fasting could prevent aging and transform your body, but it goes against everything we think of as healthy GIVE YOUR ELECTROLYTES A SUGAR-FREE BOOST USE COUPON CODE “LLVLC” FOR $10 OFF NOTICE OF DISCLOSURE: Paid sponsorship   HOT TOPIC:  Extended Fasting Is Dangerous For Your Health   1. How can I do longer fasts when i have to cook for my family of five on a nightly basis?   Hi Jimmy and Megan,   I love this new podcast! The longest I have ever gone during a fast is 24 hours, but I would like to go longer in fasting. I have PCOS, insulin resistance, and fibromyalgia. My problem is I have a family of 5 and I cook for them most evenings and this can trigger me to want to eat.  As you can probably guess, my family eats a clean version of the SAD diet and I am the only one who eats keto in the house.  How do I make a longer fast work in this context?  Would meal prepping ahead of time help in these situations? I would like to fast for 36 hours and then try to do longer fasts.   Thank you for your insights,   Georgette   2. Can fasting help with the exhaustion phase of adrenal fatigue? Is IF or extended fasting better for dealing with this?   Can you please explain how fasting can help with adrenal fatigue?  keep reading conflicting information on this subject and I am unsure whether fasting is right for me. I am currently in the "exhaustion" phase of adrenal fatigue, so my question for you is whether I need to get the adrenal fatigue under control first before fasting or will fasting help me with this condition? Would drinking aloe vera juice on a fasting day break my fast?   Hello Jimmy and Megan,   Thank you so much for creating Fasting Talk. I have read your book The Complete Guide to Fasting and started alternate day fasting. So far, I’ve seen some great benefits doing this, including feeling fantastic, a sharp mind and focus while working, and weight loss. I have one question for you about fasting days—can I drink my aloe vera juice in the morning while fasting? Would this break the fasting period?   Thanks for your help,   Kishore   4. Is it okay to still chew nicotine gum while fasting?   Hi Jimmy and Megan,   I got your fasting book and have been doing a 16:8 fast on a regular basis. This might be a strange question, but can I chew nicotine gum when I am fasting?   Much regards,   David   5. How do you prevent the loss of electrolytes and minerals when you are extended fasting?   Hi Jimmy,   I keep hearing you talking about fasting, fasting, fasting all the time. But if you fast with zero food for 7 days, for example, how do you not lose electrolytes and minerals? Don’t you need to drink more than just water to keep from becoming sick? GIVE YOUR ELECTROLYTES A SUGAR-FREE BOOST USE COUPON CODE “LLVLC” FOR $10 OFF NOTICE OF DISCLOSURE: Paid sponsorship   SPECIAL GUEST PATIENT: Angel Ramos (aka Mr. Megan Ramos!) I grew up in Orlando and ate a typical diet throughout the first 25 years of my life. I did cut out soda/pop in my teens and noticed that I lost some weight without any change to my physical activity but I was still overweight with a poor body composition. I stayed up late, ate crap junk food and drank in university and grad school. My weight peaked while on holiday in Germany as a graduation trip, 235 pounds at 6'2". I noticed new stretch marks, a marked drop in my energy levels and my clothes were tight! I was starting to get concerned about my future health and what could happen given my family medical history of diabetes, high blood pressure, heart attack, and Alzheimer's. I'm a scientist and I enjoy researching, so I went to work. With the limited nutritional knowledge I had and novice workout experience, I started reading various sources online. There are some great fitness subreddits that really helped me to understand what I needed to do. I started tracking my calories, lowered my fat intake, upped the protein and began a weight training and cardio regiment. After about 9 months of exercise and diet, my weight was about 220 pounds and I was significantly stronger in the gym, but I still had plenty of fat. This is where my story changes, I met Megan Christie (Ramos). After we had been dating for a few months, treating every trip to see each other as a vacation and eating junk, Megan explained the IDM program to me in detail and I was blown away. I began to see that by eating tons of processed/refined carbohydrates, I was only hurting myself. I also began fasting when I started eating an LCHF diet. Our cavemen ancestors certainly didn't get lucky and have a feast every day, so why do I need 3 square meals a day. I started out doing 24-hour fasts from dinner to dinner and was quickly surprised that it was much easier than I thought. After about a week, my body wasn't angry at me if at 1 pm I haven't eaten anything. I began to see weight fall off over the course of a few months. I had to buy almost an entirely new wardrobe because none of my clothes fit. I'm proud to say that I've lost 70 pounds and now weigh about 165 pounds. Can anyone doing an intermittent or alternate day fast enjoy a glass or two of wine? Hello Jimmy and Megan, I watched Dr. Jason Fung's fantastic presentation to colleagues on YouTube where he shared about a patient who managed to still enjoy a couple glasses of wine while fasting and had amazing success. I love the idea of flexibility while fasting, but at what point does a patient impede or derail their success with something like a glass or two of wine? Was he the exception or is wine with dinner allowed to be incorporated into a successful intermittent fasting or alternate daily fasting program if you track the carbs in them? Thank you for this show, I am really enjoying it! Maryann KEY QUOTE: “Take a little bit of fat for the first few days of a fast. The extra fat takes extra energy to burn and warms you up.” – Megan Ramos 2. How do I deal with cold extremities that come when I start extended fasting? Hey guys, I’m a 68-year old woman who has had a total hysterectomy, had my gallbladder removed in my early twenties, and am hypothyroid taking Synthroid. I do quite well fasting from 4-6 days. My question is what happens to me beginning on the first day of an extended fast—my hands and feet become extremely cold. It can't be from a lack of salt because this starts to happen right away in Day 1 of fasting. I tried consuming some homemade bone broth with salt, but it hasn’t helped. Any help would be appreciated, Ruth 3. Is there any reason not to fast if you are attempting to get pregnant? Hey guys! Love The Complete Guide To Fasting and the Fasting Talk podcast. I've been doing 24-hour fasts, four days a week for weight loss. I've lost 10 pounds and have about 10 more to go. My boyfriend and I are trying to get pregnant and I was wondering if engaging in fasting while trying to get pregnant is safe. Thanks for your insights! Amanda JIMMY AND DR. Thanks, Mary KEY QUOTE: "If you want to know how something is going to impact you, test it! I run-bike-swim several miles a week. I plan on fasting on Mondays and Thursdays (for 36 hours) and wonder if I will have the energy I need to get through the workouts? Alan AND Love your new podcast. My question is about fasting and exercise. I currently practice intermittent fasting but wanted to try an extended fast. I tried doing a 24-hour fast on my own and came to the realization I needed support. I’m back to doing 16:8 IF every day, but definitely needed help with doing longer fasts. When I am eating, it’s ketogenic. I can’t begin to tell you how excited, thrilled, and optimistic I feel about working with IDM. Just knowing there is a solution to my weight problem makes me feel like I have finally found my Holy Grail because NOTHING has worked for me. Even eating low-carb, high-fat was not enough to get me into fat-burning mode. I actually needed to get and keep my insulin low for a longer period of time than 12 hours, which is what I had not been doing. All of us who have struggled with our weight and health issues and have done numerous programs that have failed us, who have lived with despair and suffered with this horrible affliction, know how painful this all is. Are there special fasting considerations for people with hypothyroidism? Hey Jimmy and Megan, I've read a lot about how fasting affects various health issues, but I haven't seen anything on thyroid disease, specifically hypothyroidism (Hashimoto’s). Do you have clients in the IDM program with this and is there anything different you do with them? Thanks so much! Patti KEY QUOTE: “Let the positive health benefits motivate you to conquer your fear of fasting." – Jimmy Moore 2. Is it necessary to eat low-carb, high-fat on non-fasting days to maintain the benefits of alternate day fasting? Hi Jimmy and Megan, I have lost weight successfully using alternate day fasting. I am 5'10" tall and currently weight 163 with a BMI of 23.4 and a 34" waist. On my fasting days, I eat from 0-500 calories and I eat LCHF on my non-fasting days. So what would happen if I did not eat LCHF on my non-fasting days? Would I still see results just at a slower pace or would that negate the benefits I am seeing? Thanks! Tommy 3. If you only eat one meal a day for a 24-hour fast, how do you get adequate calories to prevent metabolic slowdown? Hey Jimmy and Megan, Okay, now I am confused. On a recent episode of Fasting Talk, I heard Megan says it is detrimental to your health to not get enough calories in on your feeding days. She noted that patients who only eat 500-800 calories a day are the hardest ones to help because their metabolism has been slowed down for so long. But then in last week’s episode from Low Carb Breckenridge with Dr. Fung answering questions, he said it’s okay to eat one meal a day when you intermittent fast and that he doesn’t really care about how many calories you get in that meal. There’s no way I could get over 1,000 calories in one meal. So if you are doing this six days a week then aren’t you getting to that place where Megan says it is detrimental with the low calorie intake? Please help me with this. Leota 4. Do I need to do extended fasting to help reduce eczema symptoms or can keto/IF give me relief from this? Hello Jimmy and Megan, Thank you so much for the information you are providing the public. You make my job as a Mind-Body Nutrition Coach easier, knowing I am providing quality, relevant information for myself and my clients. My question for you guys is about eczema. From what I’ve read, it seems fasting is beneficial, but more so for doing an extended fast of more than three days. I'm not sure I want to fast for that long since I don't have any weight to lose. I'm 5'3", 123 pounds, 52 years old and very active with trail running 2x/week, Crossfit 2x/week and ballroom dancing 2-3 times per week. Would shorter or intermittent fasting reduce the eczema symptoms or do I need to suck it up and do an extended fast of a few days to get the most benefits? Or would a ketogenic diet alone help with this? Thank you for all you do! Phyllis JIMMY AND DR. ADAM NALLY’S KETO LIVING SUPPLEMENTS 5. Are there any differences in the fasting experience consuming water vs. dry fasting? Hello Jimmy and Megan, I've read your book on fasting and love this podcast. I have been doing 7-day fasts and intermittent fasts on a regular basis. While reading your book, I saw that fasting is a practice followed by numerous religious traditions. But one element of several of these traditions, such as Ramadan, that I did not see mentioned in your book or discussed on your show is the impact of not drinking anything during the daytime of these religious fasting periods. Fasting means abstaining from food and drink from dawn to dusk. All the discussions of fasting assumes you are consuming water. But what about these dry fasts during the daytime? Is this something different about fasting with liquids vs. fasting without them? You recently answered a question of mine about whether I could fast for three days on and three days off to get the autophagic results of an extended fast. I was concerned because I didn't think I could do an extended fast because of my very physical job. Well, long story short, I completed a 26-day fast running solely on water, green tea, and KetoAide (which is a blend of water, light salt for sodium and potassium, and magnesium citrate). I felt fine, had plenty of energy, needed very little sleep, watched some scary stuff come out of my body, dropped 30 pounds, and kept off 18 of it since ending the fast. I could have physically continued to fast, but it was somewhat mentally taxing more than physically—and I just lost the will to continue it. So I broke the fast with a handful of black olives and almonds and then had a nice three egg veggie omelet an hour later. Pure bliss! Thanks again for all you guys do! Happy Fasting! Gary HOT TOPIC: Does fasting raise or lower your cholesterol numbers? Hey Jimmy and Megan, Here’s a hot topic idea for your Fasting Talk podcast. How exactly does fasting impacts your cholesterol? I’ve heard you say how it lowered your cholesterol, but my doctor said fasting would raise mine. And he was right. I had my blood lipids drawn after a 5-day water-only fast as prescribed in The Complete Guide To Fasting and my numbers were wrecked as you’ll see in my results below. I was ketogenic in the before starting fasting, so this is a shock. I would love to hearing a discussion about this on your podcast. Maybe it only works for people with already high cholesterol levels? Here are my numbers after fasting compared with keto: Total cholesterol 255 -- previously 197 Triglycerides 169 -- previously 84 HDL 41 -- previously 69 LDL 180 -- previously 121 Any thoughts? Brady JIMMY AND DR. ADAM NALLY’S KETO LIVING SUPPLEMENTS 1. Is the fat-burning from a water fast equivalent to the fat-burning from being in a state of ketosis? Hey Jimmy and Megan, I have water fasted for 21 days and many shorter ones for spiritual reasons. I know what it's like to have zero hunger after 3 days of no food. I have plenty of energy to walk and lift light things, but I’m not ready for eight hours of hard labor during a water fast. When I’m in nutritional ketosis, I also have no hunger but I’m able to do heavy lifting and do a full eight hours of hard labor work without trouble. I'm guessing the body fat burns better when we eat fat and protein on eating days than when we water fast. But we have plenty of stored body fat to fuel us when we fast. So my question is this: why can't I do my normal routine that includes a very physically demanding job on just a water fast and have the same amount of energy as I experience in nutritional ketosis? It seems they are accomplishing the same thing and should work equally. What say you? Steve 2. Does the autophagy that fasting produces cause any pain? And can that process prevent weight loss? Hi Jimmy and Megan, I’m currently in Day 7 of my fast and for the past three days my lower body, including my calves, quads, glutes, hips, and lower back, has been so sore that it has prevented me from getting adequate sleep. Full disclosure, these areas in particular are stressed in my daily life already. But fasting seems to make it worse. Could this pain be associated with the autophagy that is happening while I’m fasting? Could this be why I haven’t lost any weight during my fast? I’m consuming clear homemade vegetable broth made from carrots, onions, parsley, and celery over the past couple of days, so maybe there in an insulin response to consuming this. This has been a disaster for me and I’d love to hear your perspective on what might be going on. Thanks for considering my questions for your show. What about medications? Hey guys, I have a few nagging questions about fasting I’m hoping you can help me with. So what is someone with gastritis supposed to do with fasting when having an empty stomach with this condition is quite painful? Does fasting help heal the stomach? And what about medications that require food to be taken? How do you do that when you’re fasting? Ginny 4. Is there anything different that needs to be done while fasting with adrenal issues? Hello Jimmy and Megan, My question is simple. Are there any special considerations that people with adrenal issues should be aware of when fasting? Thanks so much. Christine KEY QUOTE: “If you have a job that is physically demanding, maybe fast on the weekend and eat ketogenic during the week.” –  Jimmy Moore 5. Can a gastric sleeve making longer fasting contraindicative? Hi Jimmy and Megan, I had a gastric sleeve put on three years ago and I have been LCHF off and on for most of that time shifting to keto three months ago. I have been playing around with intermittent fasting since 2015 but decided to give an extended fast a go in 2017. My goal was to fast for as long as I could, but by Day 4 I started to feel nauseous and threw up after taking my salt in the morning. By Day 5 it got worse and I broke the fast. I actually felt so horrible that I called my doctor who recommended taking pain medications and rest. My blood pressure got very high during the fast and I felt so uncomfortable from this experience. Within a few days I felt better and was back to normal again. I don’t know why I reacted so badly, but was wondering if my gastric sleeve was the reason why my extended fasting attempt was an abysmal failure. Have you seen any patients in my situation who have had a similar experience? I really want to do extended fasts to experience the benefits that come from doing it. Thanks for you help! How do I convince friends and family that fasting isn’t an eating disorder? Hey Jimmy and Megan, I love the Fasting Talk podcast. I have been keto for over two years losing 70 pounds with stellar blood work and I have dabbled in 24-hour fasts. But I have reservations about trying a 3-day fast. My biggest concern is about the social backlash I think I’ll experience. I have never had an eating disorder but my family and friends cannot (even after all this time) fathom that I’m cutting sugar and grains out of my diet—much less doing a fast! They were so resistant to my ketogenic lifestyle describing it as an eating disorder that the thought of fasting around them intimidates me.  What do you suggest? Thanks so much! Karen KEY QUOTE: “If you have trouble sleeping, get up and do something productive. Your body will adjust and reset.” – Megan Ramos   2. Do your senses become more heightened by Day 4 of an extended fast and why? I've noticed that when I fast for more than 3 days, my senses seem to become more heightened. Is there any explanation for this or similar experiences reported by other people who are fasting? Thank you and keep up the fantastic work! Clyde 3. Is adding fat such as MCT oil to my tea going to stoke an insulin response during my fast? I'm trying to use an eating plan Megan posted where she broke her fast with bone broth, salad with little or no protein, and green tea for lunch and then a small serving of meat with cooked non-starchy vegetables for dinner. My question stems from something Dr. Fung said about fat. Will having tea with MCT oil in the morning mess up my fast and produce an insulin response? I’m asking because obviously I don’t need insulin to not be released when I’m not eating. Appreciate your response! Jerilyn 4. How can you lower the tension that comes from fasting? Hey guys, I’ve read The Complete Guide To Fasting and have watched a lot of Dr. Fung’s videos. I feel an increased amount of tension when I’m trying to fast that it depletes me of my willpower so much that I give up on it. I’ve suffered from varying degrees of clinical anxiety most of my life and being in ketosis is the closest to calm I’ve ever felt. I know that fasting would be extremely useful for controlling my weight and my anxiety, but I’m guessing the rise in adrenaline and cortisol are what make me feel so tense. Do you have any tricks for alleviating this feeling? I really want to keep fasting. Thank you, Elaine KEY QUOTE: “The more you fast, you'll build up that fasting muscle a little bit more each time.” –  Jimmy Moore JIMMY AND DR. ADAM NALLY’S KETO LIVING SUPPLEMENTS 5. Does extended fasting lead to insomnia? Hi Jimmy and Megan, I'm on a 7-day fast (currently on Day 5) and I've found that over the last 3 nights I've had trouble sleeping. Is insomnia a common thing during fasting? If so, does it fade over time or the more you fast? I hope to move into an intermittent fasting protocol for long-term use and don't want to spend a couple of days per week with insomnia. I’m not having any withdrawals from caffeine or anything else that would be keeping me awake. And I’ve been in a state of ketosis for over six months, so I’m already in fat-burning mode. My blood ketones were 3.8 mmol/L and blood glucose was 3.4 mmol/L (61 mg/dL) this afternoon and I feel great during the day without cravings or hunger pangs. Any help you can provide on this would be appreciated. I absolutely love all your work and extend a heartfelt thanks for everything you've shared.
