In this episode we speak with two scientists from the U.S. Forest Service that are part of the American Elm disease resistance breeding and restoration program, Dr. Leila Pinchot and Dr. Kathleen Knight. Dr. Knight's research has focused on the effects of non-native pests and pathogens in forested ecosystems, concentrating in emerald ash borer and our topic today: dutch elm disease. Dr. Pinchot is a forest ecologist whose research focuses on tree restoration for species impacted by non-native pests and pathogens. Elm trees' resilience against harsh spring storms and their roots' exceptional ability to filter out sediments make them critical species for floodplains. However, elms have become a rarity among floodplains due to the desolating impacts of the elm bark beetle (scientific name: Hylurgopinus rufipes of the Curculionidae family) that spreads dutch elm disease. The disease spread extensively across the U.S. in the mid-20th century killing more than 75% of elm trees by 1989. Dutch elm disease attacks the xylem cells of the trees which carry water and nutrients from the root to the stems and leaves, making it one of the deadliest tree diseases. I've noticed that the terms "conservation" and "preservation" are often used interchangeably, however, these concepts represent two distinct philosophies and approaches to managing natural resources and protecting the environment. Understanding the difference between conservation and preservation is essential for developing effective strategies for environmental stewardship. Definition and Philosophy Conservation is the sustainable use and management of natural resources. The primary goal of conservation is to ensure that natural resources are used in a way that is both sustainable and beneficial for current and future generations. This approach recognizes that humans depend on natural resources for their survival and well-being and aims to balance the needs of people with the need to maintain healthy ecosystems. Conservation strategies often include regulated use of resources, restoration of degraded ecosystems, and protection of species through active management and hunting. Preservation, on the other hand, focuses on protecting natural environments from human interference. The primary goal of preservation is to maintain areas of the Earth in their natural, untouched state. This approach is based on the belief that nature has intrinsic value and should be protected for its own sake, regardless of any direct benefits to humans. Preservation efforts often involve creating protected areas such as national parks and wildlife reserves where human activities are strictly limited or prohibited. Historical Context The roots of both conservation and preservation can be traced back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries, during the rise of the environmental movement in the United States. Two prominent figures in this movement, Gifford Pinchot and John Muir, embodied the principles of conservation and preservation, respectively. Critics argue that conservation sometimes prioritizes human needs over ecological health, leading to conflicts between resource use and environmental protection. Preservation, on the other hand, can be criticized for being too restrictive and excluding human activities that might be compatible with environmental protection. Some argue that preservation efforts can lead to the displacement of indigenous peoples and local communities who have traditionally relied on the land for their livelihoods. Additionally, preservation can be seen as impractical in a world where human influence is pervasive and few truly untouched landscapes remain. Conclusion Conservation and preservation represent two different but complementary approaches to environmental protection. The Pinchot Family's places in American history is a long and at times complicated one. David S. Patterson brings an examination of three generations in his new book, "The Pinchots: A Family Saga" to the Sunbury Press Books Show. The Pinchot name is one that winds its way through Pennsylvania and US history, dating back to the American Civil War. Gifford Pinchot is noted for his work in conservation as head of the then Division of Forestry under President William McKinley, and served as head of the re-named US Forest Service through the administrations of Theodore Roosevelt and William Howard Taft. His early relationship with Roosevelt kept him involved in political circles with connections through the time of the Kennedy Administration. Pinchot's forays into politics included two terms as Governor of Pennsylvania, and three unsuccessful campaigns for the US Senate. Other members of the Pinchot family are featured, all of whom espoused values of public service, as well as activism in the arts, culture and politics, with their own personal stories, triumphs and tragedies. David S. Patterson earned his Ph.D. in history from the University of California, Berkeley, has taught deplomatic and peace history. His other works include "Toward a Warless World" and "The Search for Negotiated Peace." In addition, Patterson has served as chief editor of the "Foreign Relations of the United States."

Jeff is passionate about the outdoors and the conservation of public land, whose work has been cited in Forbes, USA Today, and other notable publications. He is the author of Appalachian Odyssey (2016), Blazing Ahead (2017), and a new book This Land Was Saved for You and Me: How Gifford Pinchot, Frederick Law Olmsted, and a Band of Foresters Rescued America's Public Lands that came out in September 2022 tells the story of how America's public lands—our city parks, national forests, and wilderness areas—came into being can be traced to a few conservation pioneers and proteges who shaped policy and advocated for open spaces. Some, like Frederick Law Olmsted and Gifford Pinchot, are well known, while others have never been given their due. Jeffrey Ryan covers the nearly century-long period between 1865 (when Olmsted contributed to the creation of Yosemite as a park and created its management plan) to the signing of the Wilderness Act of 1964. Olmsted influenced Pinchot, who became the first head of the National Forest Service. In turn, Pinchot hired the foresters who became the founders of The Wilderness Society and creators of the Wilderness Act itself. This history emphasizes the cast of characters —among them Theodore Roosevelt, Bob Marshall, Benton MacKaye, Aldo Leopold, and Howard Zahniser—and provides context for their decisions and the political and economic factors that contributed to the triumphs and pitfalls in the quest to protect public lands. In researching the book, Ryan traveled to the places where these crusaders lived, worked, and were inspired to take up the cause to make public lands accessible to all. On this episode of the Park Leaders Show, guest co-host, Phil Gaines, returns to discuss the life and legacy of Gifford Pinchot.  As a top 10 influencer on Phil's park and conservation list, Pinchot, often heralded as the Father of American conservation, left an impressionable legacy on national parks. Not only did he professionalize forest management but established the modern definition of conservation as a “wise use” approach to public land. In his words, stewardship was regarding “the greatest good for the greatest number in the long run.” A peer of Teddy Roosevelt, Pinchot founded the Society of American Foresters in 1900 to preserve public lands and prevent exploitation. It was first coined by Gifford Pinchot III and Elizabeth S. Pinchot in a 1978 white paper. Rarely do you meet someone who created a word that became common. My guests today, Gifford and Libba Pinchot, created the term intrapraneurship. In the world of leadership and entrepreneurship, they created a discipline.After years of activism in the 60s, through entrepreneurship in the 90s, and what attracted me to them most, they started a business school from scratch, the first to offer an MBA in sustainable business. Beyond teaching students, they changed the field, as you'll hear in our conversation.I've worked with a lot of business schools. Today they all have to work on sustainability. As a professor, I can't imagine sustainability and nature not infused into my courses. The Pinchots helped start that trend. Welcome to this episode of the Hurstories, a history podcast presented by Mercyhurst students. My name is Steven Mooradian and I will be your host for this episode.    Any good Erieite will tell you, there’s a church on every street, and a bar on every corner.   Erie’s long history with beer extends to the first large waves of immigration, bringing their brewing practices with them, none more locally famous than the Koehler family.  Their persistence through 13 years of prohibition propelled them into local legend, and the Koheler name remains a staple in northwestern Pennsylvania.  Erie, Pennsylvania has been a Mecca for immigrants for over a century and a half. Groups of Italian, Polish, German, Irish, Russian, Greek, and other European immigrants have historically found a small slice of Erie to call home. Even more recently, large contingencies of Nepalese, Bhutanese, Syrian, Central African, and Latin American groups have found their sanctuary and safety in some of the same areas. Though Erie’s population has decreased significantly since the mid 20th century, these groups are almost single-handedly keeping those numbers steady. There is truly a connection between the success of immigrants and the success of Erie.  Erie has a small, urban center. It is centrally located between three major cities: Buffalo, Cleveland, and Pittsburgh. And it was a center of commerce and industry for a better part of the 19th and 20th centuries, perfect for establishing economic success in anything from paper to beer. When immigrants arrive they bring their interests and talents, making Erie one of the most diverse cities in America for well over a century.  Charles Koehler, a Dutch immigrant who arrived in Erie in the mid 1800’s, knew Erie held for him some of these opportunities. He worked for Frederick Dietz, who owned a brewery at 17th and Parade Street. Dietz died in 1858 and Charles took it over, though he left only a few years later in 1862 to begin a new brewery with his sons at 26th and Holland. Charles son Fred inherited the business, but it was his other son Jackson Koehler, who would take the family name and make it a brand.1   The first brewery built at the site of 21st and State Streets in Erie in 1855 was by George Frey and Peter Schaaf. Frey was himself an immigrant, from Germany, and is credited with introducing the lager style of beer to the Greater Erie-Buffalo region.2  Schaaf would go on to find a new partner several years later, a man by the name of Henry Kavelage, who in 1863 became the sole owner of the operation and named it Eagle Brewery.  Twenty years after, in 1883, Jackson Koehler purchased the brewery, calling it the Jackson-Eagle Koehler Brewery.  Erie in the 1880’s had multiple brewing operations, consisting of four lager plants, one ale, and one porter breweries. They all shared the market, but it didn’t take long for Jackson Koehler to surge to the top of the game. In 1890, Jackson commissioned Louis Lehle, a Chicago architect to design the new brewery.  On April 1, 1899, several of those other breweries, the Fred Koehler and Co. (Jackson’s brother), Cascade Brewery, National Brewery, and Eagle Brewery merged under the command of Koehler now going by the name Erie Brewing Company. The Koehler name became synonymous with beer in the Erie region.  The brewery ran with few flaws for years, until the bombshell hit.  Prohibition became the law of the land, cemented as the 18th amendment to the US Constitution in 1920.  Prohibition was particularly tricky in PA. Lots of working-class people, meant both strong adherence and strong resistance. Labor Unions were some of the fiercest opponents of the eighteenth amendment. However, other unions were avid proponents of prohibition, because labor leaders felt that with their workers boozed up, gave them a disadvantage on negotiations.  Gifford Pinchot, a successful conservationist running for governor during the lead up to prohibition ran under the pretense that he would strictly enforce the prohibition laws.  Unsurprisingly, he drew much of his support from groups like the Women’s Anti-Temperance Movement, which led the charge against prohibition, but also from several types of unions and farmers.  Pinchot won his election in 1923, just three years after the 18th amendment was adopted, and served as Governor of Pennsylvania until 1927.  He began cracking down on the prohibition laws, however, to his dismay, crime and usage increased while the enforcement of the law decreased dramatically by police departments. Whether it was a direct defiance of the governor, or simply lazy police work, is unclear, but needless to say, prohibition wasn’t going as planned for Governor Pinchot.  Despite his overall failure on prohibition, Pinchot won again in 1931, serving a nonconsecutive term until 1935. He also helped to establish the PA Liquor Control Board and hoped to deter alcohol use by making it quote, “as inconvenient and expensive as possible”.  Meanwhile, rum-running and bootlegging were becoming a massive industry along the Lake Erie border.  The proximity to Canada made it easy for smugglers to get across the international border in a hurry. Canada had no prohibition laws.8 Boats would speed across the lake, pick up cargo in places like Port Dover, Ontario and other lakefront towns, and come back to Erie or the Pennsylvania lakeshore. These trips were so frequent, it has been suggested there are hundreds of unopened bootlegged alcohol bottles at the bottom of Lake Erie. Much like the prohibition era on land, the policing of the waters was so ineffective, it was essentially non-existent.  Even today, restaurants and bars in Erie, like Rum-Runners Cove, Smugglers Wharf, and the former Bootleggers Bar and Grille pay homage to this history.   President Franklin Roosevelt signed a bill in March of 1933, legalizing the sale and consumption of wine and beer and by December of the same year, the 18th amendment had been repealed and the 21st amendment ratified, ending prohibition.  Prohibition forced the closure of breweries for Koehler and many others; however, Koehler was so popular, that in 1933, the year prohibition ended, he reopened the Erie Brewing Company resuming normal operations.   Prohibition was viewed as a complete failed experiment. The usage of alcohol was not eliminated and may very well have even been elevated. The implementation of the eighteenth amendment also brought forth several unintended consequences.   Many marginalized groups were targeted. Anti-alcohol meant anti-immigrant as Europeans like Germans, Polish, Irish, and Dutch were the primary brewers.  Catholics were also notable drinkers and the 1920’s saw a great resurgence of the Ku Klux Klan as well as other extreme sects of White Anglo Saxon Protestant vigilantism. Organized crime including the likes of Al Capone and other notable gangsters was also elevated, in this time period.   As for Koehler, the brewery operated normally until the 1970’s when the it was closed down in 1978.  The historic building sat empty for many years, and unfortunately for history, the complex was demolished in 2006.  However, in 2018, two brothers Bruce and Bryan Koehler, brought the name back.  They are unsure if they are directly related to Jackson Koehler, but they are sure of their connection to Erie.  They’re from Pittsburgh but their grandparents lived in Millcreek and remember passing the plant as kids, even remarking that Koehler is the only beer their family drank.  The brothers operate the new Koehler Brewing Company out of Grove City, PA, about an hour away from Erie. The Koehler brand is still one of the most recognizable in Northwestern Pennsylvania. Many families tell stories of drinking Koehler beer with their loved ones and Koehler memorabilia is highly sought after. Though the building does not exist anymore, the original Eagle Brewery sign survives and can be seen inside the BrewERIE at Union Station, which preserves some of Erie’s brewing heritage.   The survival of Koehler, bootlegging, and the prohibition era in Pennsylvania is just a snapshot of the Roaring 20’s, but it’s a legacy that the Erie region is true to, and in a lot of ways is proud of.  With its recent reemergence, generations of Erieites can kick their feet up, drink a Koehler, and tell stories, just as their fathers and grandfathers did.   Something has to keep those bars open!  We’ll see you next time on Hurstories, until then, I have been Steven, and thank you for listening.

Jim meets up with Patti, Debbie, and Ted at Le Conte Ranger Station. Over the next three days, they go up and over three major passes on the John Muir Trail: Mather, Pinchot, and Glen. Along the way they experience many fine sections of the JMT, including the Golden Staircase, the Palisade Lakes, and the Rae Lakes. On the fourth day, their last together, they exit over Kearsarge Pass, down to the Onion Valley trailhead above the town of Independence.

First came the protections, then major funding wins in the 1930s, then public input in the 1960s & 70s. What can we learn from the first three or four generations of conservationists, how do we modernize funding and where do we go from here? Thanks for listening.  

Gifford Pinchot is known primarily for his work as first chief of the U. S. Forest Service and for his argument that resources should be used to provide the "greatest good for the greatest number of people." But Pinchot was a more complicated figure than has generally been recognized, and more than half a century after his death, he continues to provoke controversy. Gifford Pinchot and the Making of Modern Environmentalism, the first new biography in more than three decades, offers a fresh interpretation of the life and work of the famed conservationist and Progressive politician. In addition to considering Gifford Pinchot's role in the environmental movement, historian Char Miller sets forth an engaging description and analysis of the man -- his character, passions, and personality -- and the larger world through which he moved. Char Miller begins by describing Pinchot's early years and the often overlooked influence of his family and their aspirations for him. He examines Gifford Pinchot's post-graduate education in France and his ensuing efforts in promoting the profession of forestry in the United States and in establishing and running the Forest Service. While Pinchot's twelve years as chief forester (1898-1910) are the ones most historians and biographers focus on, Char Miller also offers an extensive examination of Pinchot's post-federal career as head of The National Conservation Association and as two-term governor of Pennsylvania. In addition, he looks at Pinchot's marriage to feminist Cornelia Bryce and discusses her role in Pinchot's political radicalization throughout the 1920s and 1930s. An epilogue explores Gifford Pinchot's final years and writings. Char Miller offers a provocative reconsideration of key events in Pinchot's life, including his relationship with friend and mentor John Muir and their famous disagreement over damming Hetch Hetchy Valley. The author brings together insights from cultural and social history and recently discovered primary sources to support a new interpretation of Pinchot -- whose activism not only helped define environmental politics in early twentieth century America but remains strikingly relevant today.

A great campsite, & with their solid crew around them, Molly & Ethan awake to birdsong after a lovely deep sleep. Plenty of chat today amongst the team, as most of them are heading to Yosemite valley tomorrow and this is likely to be their last day all together for (perhaps) a very long time :( . Donahue Pass is today's obstacle, but it is the last of the High Sierra passes! Whilst the previous weeks have been defined by snowy mountain passes with some river crossings, the next section is defined by abundant water with some snow sections. The heavy melt is evident as the water often cascades down the trail itself. They bump into Sugar Glider; whose appearance reminds them that today is 'hike naked' day...mmm. (Ed. maybe I should add his photo to the website?). A long last lunch with everyone includes gossip from the trail; SOBO got lost again, we hear about Hong Kong Tyrone, Highlander, Slaughterhouse; they lament the absence of Trail Magic in the Sierras; as (naked) Crunch and (non-naked) Gilligan head out they make an odd pair. Donahue Pass approaches, and crossing Rush Creek beforehand turns out to be straightforward as the snowbridge is still (marginally? luckily?) intact. Ethan analyses the best way to tackle a short steep snowy section before the decision (and his feet) is (are) taken away from him. Happy this is the last of the passes; a long climb up Donahue makes them pleased that this is the highest they'll be on the trail ever again, and they remember sleeping up at Pinchot (even higher). There is a tremendous glissade down the other side (check the website for a video), but now thoughts turn to river crossings and the group splitting up. With the road to Yosemite only partially opened today, the side team plan for a lie-in to time their arrival (at the first PCT road crossing for over 240 miles) with potential hitchhike opportunities, whilst EthaMol realise this was their last day with some very good friends (as foreigners they have a 'hard' visa deadline to reach Canada); hopefully they will all meet up again (Ed; I'd like to meet them too!). After a good night's sleep, the team awaken to a cold morning. They break camp with cold numb hands and immediately have a river crossing to contend with. Molly does a good job navigating with the trail still beneath the snow, but their confidence is shaken when the meet a hiker heading back towards Glen and Kearsarge Passes, having decided a river crossing ahead was too much for him and deciding he'd rather hike two days back down the trail and get to town to wait for the conditions to calm down. Deciding to keep to their mantra of checking things out for themselves, they push on, and come to another camp site where a couple of groups are still sleeping, including Funk & Cricket! Waiting for the others to wake up thoughts turn to strategies for the crossings, and with quite a few hikers there are more than enough opinions with some opting to turn around, some wanting to wait, and a few wanting to go ahead no matter what. Molly & Ethan realise that they weren't the only ones to struggle with yesterday's climb over Glen Pass, and are pleased that they took their time and didn't try to push too hard. There are slight tensions at the camp concerning the river crossings, and as they are a bit slower than most other people Molly & Ethan head out, intending to wait by anything too extreme for others to catch up. They still have time to enjoy the sighting of a grouse, before the two of them ford a difficult river by linking arms and crossing together. They push on uphill now towards Pinchot Pass (12,139ft) and the trail is tough to follow. A few members of the now splintered groups catch up, including Funk & Cricket, Tom & Nellie, & Zach. The 5 of them reach the incredible views at the top of Pinchot, and decide to camp on top of the world. Listening to their echoes bounce around the mountains and enjoying the most incredible sunset before the Milky Way spreads itself across the sky the team bed down and think about the challenges tomorrow will bring. The first item is titled, 3 Ways to Make Your Portfolio More Climate-Aware, by Jon Hale at Morningstar. I really respect Jon. He’s doing an incredible job at Morningstar in orienting that famous investment research firm towards ESG. In his latest post he highlights the work of GMO—no that’s not genetically modified organisms—but a top-notch investment house. For decades I've heard—and you too I'm sure—that if you narrow your investment universe you will get lower returns. Well, consider this from Jon’s post, quote, "Grantham and his colleagues at GMO looked at what happens when you remove a single sector from an S&P 500-based portfolio. They created S&P 500 portfolios ex energy, ex healthcare, and ex the other eight sectors in the index, going back to 1989, 1957, and 1925. They found that the range of returns for the ex portfolios was only 50-60 basis points annualized, distributed above and below the S&P 500's return. In the case of the ex energy portfolio, it underperformed the S&P 500 by just 5 basis points annualized from 1925 to 2017, underperformed by 7 basis points annualized from 1957 to 2017, and outperformed by 3 basis points annualized from 1989 to 2017. Grantham's conclusion: 'You can divest from oil--or about anything else--without much consequence for performance.'" Close quote. So, according to GMO, divest from fossil fuels and not worry about lower returns! Nonetheless, I would be happier if this research was written-up and published in an appropriate peer-reviewed journal and critiqued. Incidentally, Grantham says that the fossil fuel sector is way overpriced considering its risks. ------------------------------------------------------------- Now, do you invest in, or are considering investing in, municipal or local authority bonds? Have you thought about climate change risk concerning municipal bond investments? Well, you should! Bernice Napach writing in ThinkAdvisor under the title, How to Reduce Investment Risk From Climate Change and Other ESG Woes, writes, and I quote her, that, "If no counter action is taken, such as reducing fossil fuel use, close to 60% of U.S. metro areas will lose 1% of more of gross domestic product, which will not be offset by comparable growth in other metro areas." Close quote. Think about all the risks—and costs—municipalities might face regarding fires, flooding events, excessive winds, etc. So, before investing in municipal bonds, be satisfied concerning their climate change risks and plans. By the way, this article has a great map of the US showing those areas likely to be affected by Category 4 and 5 hurricanes between 2060 and 2080. It’s quite alarming. Also, be sure to understand municipalities long-term pension and other liability risks. Many analysts believe these alone could sink many American cities in the decades ahead. Hence, even with the tax advantages in some jurisdictions, tread carefully in municipal bond waters! ------------------------------------------------------------- If you want a good understanding as to the state of ESG data and information for investors, read the post, What investors actually want from sustainability data, by Ariel C. Pinchot and Giulia Christianson on Greenbiz.com. Needless to say, it’s still a work in progress. If you’ve ever tried to analyze ESG info across companies—even in the same industry—it’s usually impossible as they often use different metrics. Furthermore, unless the data is independently audited and verified, it can’t be relied upon. The article describes in detail how these issues might be soon overcome. Incidentally, you should subscribe to Greenbiz.com. It’s a great source of information for ethical and sustainable investors. ------------------------------------------------------------- Many ethical and sustainable investors shy away from the fast food industry because of the poor health and negative environmental issues they help create. Well, here’s some good news in a post, titled, Yum! Brands shows leadership among fast food peers, takes encouraging first step to mitigate its climate change impacts. Quoting the post, “The parent company of KFC, Taco Bell, and Pizza Hut committed to pursue a science-based target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from its operations, franchises and supply chain (Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions), and to explore purchasing renewable energy.” Sometimes it pays well to invest in companies that are just beginning to make strides on ESG issues. Studies show that such companies often offer better alpha, that is, upside stock price potential, than established ESG winners. ------------------------------------------------------------- One new interesting ESG barometer on the horizon is a new ratings’ service by S&P called S&P Evaluation. S&P will rate—at the request of the companies themselves—the ESG credentials pertaining to the company’s ability to operate successfully in the future. You can read about in the post, Official ESG Evaluations from S&P Coming to Insurance Sector in Near Future, by Don Jergler, Insurance Journal. Quoting the post, "'The ratings giant on April 11 announced the roll out of its ESG Evaluation, describing it as 'a new benchmark that provides a cross-sector, relative analysis of an entity's capacity to operate successfully in the future.'" Close quote. Well, S&P's new ESG Evaluation product sounds great. However, I see some big snags with it. First, companies request to be rated—unlike the rating groups such as Sustainalytics and MSCI, etc., who rate companies regardless of what the companies themselves might want. Secondly, though not mentioned, S&P’s standard credit ratings require companies themselves to pay to be rated. Is this yet another conflict of interest like the one that got these credit rating agencies in hot water back in 2008/9? Can you trust such ratings then? Thirdly, will the details of the ratings be public or just a rating’s number? That’s important as its the details that many ethical and sustainable investors will want to see. ------------------------------------------------------------- Now we have another survey of financial professionals showing that it’s the ‘g’ for ‘governance’ in ESG that’s really important to them. However, for many of you listening to this podcast, I’m sure that you might think the environment and or social criteria are at least equally important. I think this just illustrates the state of ESG currently. There’s still much dispute about the quantity, quality, and standardization of the E and S information for it to be in the forefront for many investment professionals. The survey was reported on Nasdaq by Kurt Schact with the title, ESG in Investment Management: New Age or Just Noise? The depth of the survey is extraordinary as 1,100 financial professionals and 23 workshops in 17 investment centers around the world took part, says the article. The survey was conducted by the CFA Institute and Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI). This confirms other surveys that have tried to determine the relative importance of each of the three variables that make-up ESG. What this might mean for you is that when doing your own ESG research on companies—and looking for maximum gains—you might want to weigh governance more highly than environmental and social factors. At least for now. ------------------------------------------------------------- Incidentally, if you’re invested in wind turbine companies, beware, as there’s a possible new disruptive competitor with a radically new kind of wind turbine that could be twice as efficient as present ones. This new development in wind turbine efficiency—if Vestas and others are unable to replicate it due to patents, etc.—could mean dramatic shifts in the industry ahead! GUEST: Peter Janney grew up in Washington, D.C. during the Cold War era of the 1950s and 1960s. His father Wistar Janney was a senior career CIA official.
