"Unveiling MK-Ultra: Joe Rogan's Rare Deep Dive into the CIA's Mind Control Experiments"Prepare to unravel the chilling truths behind one of the CIA's most secretive and controversial programs: MKUltra. In this rare and riveting episode, Joe Rogan and a top-tier investigator peel back the layers of conspiracy, control, and corruption that defined this covert operation. From its origins as "Bluebird" to its evolution into a mind-bending experiment on unwitting citizens, MKUltra sought to engineer assassins, erase memories, and reshape human behavior without consent. Discover how a network of safe houses, rogue scientists like Dr. Louis "Jolly" West, and chilling connections to figures like Charles Manson created a blueprint for psychological manipulation. This episode dives deep into never-before-heard details, including the mysterious Jimmy Shaver case, the controversial Operation Midnight Climax, and how these experiments sought to control minds in ways that remain shocking today. Featuring firsthand insights, hidden correspondence, and investigative discoveries, this podcast challenges what we think we know about MKUltra. Whether you're a history buff, a conspiracy enthusiast, or someone seeking to uncover hidden truths, this is an episode you can't afford to miss. Tune in and join the conversation—this story is far more than a conspiracy; it's a revelation.Origins of MKUltra (00:00–00:39)MKUltra started as "Bluebird" in 1948, became "Artichoke," and eventually evolved into MKUltra in 1952.It was a CIA mind control program aimed at manipulating human behavior without their knowledge. Objectives of MKUltra (00:39–01:18)The program sought to create "hypnoprogrammed assassins," popularly termed "Manchurian candidates," who could commit acts like murder without memory of their programming.Other goals included training couriers to deliver messages with no memory of their missions.Exposure of MKUltra (01:51–02:26)MKUltra's existence came to light through hearings in the 1970s (Rockefeller Commission, Church Hearings).CIA officials Richard Helms and Dr. Sidney Gottlieb destroyed most records in 1973.Safe Houses and Experiments (02:26–03:04)Experiments took place in "safe houses" disguised as brothels or communes, where unsuspecting people were dosed with drugs like LSD.Dr. Louis "Jolly" West, a key researcher, conducted covert experiments.Connections to Charles Manson (03:44–04:46)Dr. West operated in the same area and time as Charles Manson's rise. Documents suggest his methods aligned with MKUltra objectives.Graduate students working for West reported being unaware of the true nature of their research, suspecting a hidden agenda.Operation Midnight Climax (05:59–06:30)A CIA project involving brothel setups where subjects were dosed with LSD and observed without their knowledge.Jimmy Shaver Case (12:42–15:12)A highly controversial incident involving Airman Jimmy Shaver, who murdered a child but claimed no memory of the crime.Dr. West was involved as Shaver's psychiatrist and reportedly manipulated his memories.False Memories and Brainwashing (16:23–17:32)Dr. West claimed to have developed techniques to replace true memories with false ones, a primary MKUltra goal. The CIA officially denied the success of such experiments during hearings, though evidence suggests otherwise.Speculation and Ethical Concerns (17:32–19:20)MKUltra's experiments often went awry, with unintended consequences like Shaver's case. Many records were destroyed, leaving gaps in understanding the full extent of these operations.Legacy and Modern Implications (19:20–20:33)Dr. West and other psychiatrists were involved in deprogramming returning Korean War POWs, raising questions about whether the U.S. manipulated these soldiers. The lack of accountability and transparency continues to fuel speculation about the true scope of MKUltra.

GUEST 1 OVERVIEW: Jefferson Morley is a Washington author and veteran journalist whose novelistic non-fiction books explore untold chapters in the history of the American nation. A skilled investigative reporter, Morley combines granular detail with storytelling verve to capture unknown realities of subjects as disparate as the Central Intelligence Agency and America's legacy of racial violence. Morley's newest book, Scorpions Dance: The President, The Spymaster and Watergate, excavates the untold backstory of Watergate: How the subterranean relationship of two master Machiavellians–CIA director Richard Helms and President Richard Nixon–culminated in America' greatest political scandal. Morley's 2017 book, The Ghost: The Secret Life of CIA Spymaster James Jesus Angleton, tells the story of a paranoid genius who was perhaps the most powerful unelected official in the U.S. government. At the height of the Cold War, Angleton's secret influence extended from Moscow to London to Jerusalem to the Vatican, to the White House. If there is a “Deep State” in American life as some contend, Angleton was one of its Founding Fathers. Morley's trilogy of spies starts with Our Man in Mexico: Winston Scott and the Hidden History of the CIA. his 2008 biography of an improbable American spy. Winston Scott was an Alabama math teacher turned FBI agent who joined the CIA at its founding, became close friends with Angleton and became the chief of the agency's Mexico City station in the 1960s. “Every decade or so a talented writer provides a genuinely new glimpse of the Central Intelligence Agency,” said historian Thomas Powers of the book. Morley's second book, Snow-Storm in August, was described by best-selling author David Mariniss as “History so fresh it feels alive.” A vivid account of a white riot that swept the nation's capital 25 years before the Civil War, Snow-Storm's “plunge beneath the surface of history exposes realities more true to daily experience than executive proclamations or speeches in Congress,” said the Washington Post. The Minneapolis Star Tribune called it “elegant and readable.” Morley is one of the world's leading authorities on the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. He is editor of the blog, JFK Facts blog on Substack. GUEST 2 OVERVIEW: Trevor Scott FitzGibbon is president of Silent Partner and an award-winning PR strategist with more than 20 years of experience. His work has primarily focused on defending human rights, whistleblowers, and exposing corruption throughout his career. His clients have ranged from Google Foundation and Amnesty International to WikiLeaks, Julian Assange Legal Defense, Pearl Jam, the governments of Venezuela and Ecuador, and its legal fight against Chevron for its destruction of the Ecuadoran rainforest.

Episode 154 is  the fourth  in a new series of episodes  that chronicle the story of the Garrison investigation in  New Orleans and the related trial of Clay Shaw.  This episode  addresses the bias of writers and the press,  which collectively  undermined getting at the  complete truth. We also explore  the actions taken by the CIA after it became a matter of public record that the Garrison investigation was underway.  More specifically, we read, in its entirety, the CIA internal memo dated April 1, 1967 which was issued at the direction of Richard Helms just weeks after news of the Garrison investigation broke in the press.  The CIA memo outlines a systematic program put in place to defend the Warren Report including overt actions to be  taken by the CIA  to influence politicians and influential members of the press and writers.  Garrison's fame was resurrected by the Oliver Stone film JFK, so 1992 was the year that the trial of Clay Shaw was first revisited nationally.  This episode contains key panel discussions and a debate by the world class investigative reporter Dan Moldea and opposing views by Colonel Fletcher Prouty.  Hear the emotionally charged exchanges that were a microcosm for the national debate going on in the country (about the assassination)  at that moment in time.  Garrison's investigation and trial became the inspiration and partial basis for Oliver Stone's movie JFK. Dan Moldea provides provocative comments about Garrison's tie in with the New Orleans syndicate and Carlos Marcello  and declares that  Garrison had deceptive  motivations as a result. If Moldea's allegations are true, undoubtedly these facts  would have impacted the trajectory of the  grand jury investigation and the subsequent trial. All of these elements are designed to, collectively,  help  you as the juror determine Garrison's proper place in the history of the JFK assassination story.    Even as early as 1964, rumors and serious concerns over  the lone gunman theory and the evidence that might contravene it,  were becoming a major concern for the government and the commission. Conspiracy theories were contrary to the government's stated narrative from the very beginning. This  real-life story is more fascinating than fiction. No matter whether you are a serious researcher or a casual student, you will enjoy the fact filled narrative and story as  we relive one of the most shocking moments in American History. Episode 135 is another  Bonus Episode.    We cover the infamous story of the failed Attack on the Moncada Barracks.  This was the  first armed attack  led by Fidel Castro against the Batista government after the1952  coup by Batista.  The attack failed miserably with 25 people killed in the attack itself and an additional 54 of the revolutionaries summarily rounded up and murdered shortly afterward. Fidel Castro escaped into the mountains but was subsequently apprehended and brought to trial. While he was convicted and sentenced to fifteen years, his eloquent speech now dubbed "history will absolve me" coupled with the brutality of the Batista forces as they dealt with the escaping revolutionaries, combined to turn Castro into a national hero and set the stage for a later toppling of the Batista government.    Join us in this continuing miniseries on Cuban history  as we continue to set the stage and  explore  the forces that were shaping the world in that era of the twentieth century. “Stay the hell out of it!” Those were the key words from the so-called smoking gun tape, the conversation between Richard Nixon and his Chief of Staff Bob Haldeman about how to get the FBI to back off its investigation into the Watergate break-in that occurred fifty years ago this week, June 17th, 1972. The plan they came up with in the days after the burglary was to get the CIA and its powerful director Richard Helms to tell the then head of the FBI, L. Patrick Gray to back off, to stay the hell out of it, to drop the probe into the financing of the break-in unless dark agency secrets would be revealed. It was a lie of course, the Watergate break-in had been bankrolled by Nixon campaign donors and not the agency spooks at Langley. But as Jefferson Morley writes in his new book, Scorpions Dance: The President, The Spymaster and Watergate, Helms was prepared to do what Nixon wanted, at least first. He drafted a memo instructing two deputies that the agency needed to instruct the bureau to quote, “Confine themselves to the personalities already arrested.” And “desist from expanding this investigation into other areas.” Helms may have later gotten cold feet, but as Morley reminds us it was just one of many examples of the exceedingly strange and still mysterious relationship between Nixon and the Spy Master, a dynamic in which each man seemed to have abundant blackmail material against each other. As the country prepares to commemorate the half-century anniversary of Watergate, we'll look back at the events of that era and get a fascinating new take on why they matter more than ever as Morley joins us.GUESTS:Eric Holder, (@jeffersonmorley), Author, Scorpions Dance: The President, The Spymaster and WatergateHOSTS:Michael Isikoff (@Isikoff), Chief Investigative Correspondent, Yahoo NewsDaniel Klaidman (@dklaidman), Editor in Chief, Yahoo NewsVictoria Bassetti (@VBass), fellow, Brennan Center for Justice (contributing co-host)RESOURCES:Pick up Morley's book Scorpions Dance: The President, The Spymaster and Watergate - Here.Recent story on Watergate - Here.Follow us on Twitter: @SkullduggeryPodListen and subscribe to "Skullduggery" on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts.Email us with feedback, questions or tips: SkullduggeryPod@yahoo.com. Sam and Emma host Jefferson Morley, editor of the JFKFacts blog, to discuss his recent book Scorpions' Dance: The President, the Spymaster, and Watergate. Sam and Emma begin by assessing the fundamentally bipartisan-and-nothing-else gun control bill, and cover the arrest of Idaho White Supremacists planning a riot at a pride event, Sarah Palin's advancement in the Alaskan senate race, and walk through the 10 republicans in the Gun Control gang of 20, and the unsurprising fact that almost half are retiring. Then, Jefferson Morley joins as they dive right into what the Watergate conspiracy was, and how it was covered at the time, including the classic representation of the incident as an example of a crusading free press taking on a lawless president, and how this discourse completely obscures the hidden hand of the CIA and how their role in the conspiracy has crystalized over the last half-century. They then dive into what Nixon's plan for this group of “Plumbers” was, originating from his paranoia around government leaks and the anti-war movement, and coming to fruition via recommendations from Richard Helms, director of the CIA, who helped provide 4 of the 7 members of the team. Next, they jump back to the actual developments of the Watergate investigation, with the slow release of tapes in the weeks following, despite Nixon's constant pressuring of Helms to stop the FBI investigation, and how this led the public to focus not on the CIA's role in Watergate, but their other abuses, from foreign assassinations to spying on Americans, as the Church Committee in charge of the senate investigation of the CIA wanted to keep it Bipartisan and away from the Nixon investigation. Morley then dives deep into Nixon's relationship with his intelligence agencies, working as a lawless president alongside a lawless CIA, as he couldn't convince Hoover to dig into domestic surveillance, making his relationship with Helms' CIA central to his power, working closely in Nixon's assassination attempts on Salvador Allende's cabinet, and providing Nixon with a relationship that he could leverage – not with the knowledge of their foreign interventions but with a threat over hidden information with the Bay of Pigs. After an extensive conversation on what this “hidden information” likely entailed, that being the CIA's role in the assassination of JFK, and the internal spy games being played against each other by the White House, CIA, FBI, and Joint Chiefs of Staff, Morley, Sam, and Emma wrap up the conversation by exploring the lasting lessons we can learn about the dangers of a lawless president that is supported by a lawless CIA. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma watch Dennis Prager signal out the true evil of our society: evil. Calvin from Montana calls in about Democrats' chance in the upcoming midterm cycle as Biden explains, totally unrelatedly, why republicans are good, actually. Sam and Emma dive into the 1/6 hearings, from the attacks on Capitol Police to Giuliani's drunken proclamation that Trump, with no evidence, should claim victory in the wake of the 2020 election. As Starbucks' unionization trends continue, Schultz goes on a rampage against this “secondary party” (workers) invading the Starbucks family, and Patriot Front is detained in Idaho. He made a career out of keeping secrets, starting in a wartime intelligence group and working his way up to Director of the CIA in 1966. But when Congress questioned him about U.S. involvement in the 1970 Chilean presidential election, Helms found himself caught between two oaths—one to secrecy, and one to truth-telling.

On June 8, 1967, the USS LIBERTY an unarmed intelligence ship reporting to the Joint Chiefs of Staff under the auspices of the National Security Agency, was positioned in international waters off the coast of Egypt when it was attacked with deadly violence by unmarked jet planes firing rockets and machine guns and throwing napalm onto its deck. This ambush was followed by a torpedo strike that blew a forty-foot hole in the starboard side of the ship. Lacking the capacity to defend themselves, thirty-four sailors were killed and 174 wounded, many for life. By the end of the day, Israel had confessed to having been the aggressor, simultaneously arguing that the attack had been an "accident" and a "mistake."The facts said otherwise. So intense and sustained was the attack - it lasted for nearly an hour and a half - so specific was the aiming for the antennae and satellite dish on deck, that it was scarcely credible that Israel's aggression was not deliberate; such was the view of Marshall Carter, the director of the National Security Agency, his deputy director Louis Tordella, and Richard Helms, the Director of Central Intelligence. We continue our coverage of the CIA's mind control program. While we really have no idea the depths to which the MK Ultra project's research plunged, due to the fact that nearly all the project's documents were destroyed at the direction of then CIA Director, Richard Helms, what we do know from the declassified financial documents is still pretty horrifying. These documents make it clear that they were experimenting on unwitting citizens, military members, and prisoners, implementing trauma-based experimentation, and attempting to cover their tracks with front operations & deceptive practices. While they claim this type of research ended in the 1970s, there's little doubt in our minds that it is ongoing, more advanced, and more insidious. Based on interviews with more than forty survivors, knowledgeable political insiders, and Soviet archives of the period, investigative writer Joan Mellen presents evidence suggesting complicity between US and Israeli intelligence in the attack on Liberty and the more than fifty-year long cover-up. What were the underlying motives? Was this a false flag operation conducted in the midst of the Six-Day War? Was it conceivable that Israel would have initiated such an operation without a green light from the United States? For the sake of justice, truth and the murdered and surviving sailors, this is a story demanding to be told. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

And with that, I would like to introduce my good friend and a great writer who also happens to be a multi-award winning author, a retired clinical forensic psychologist, and a retired college professor, Richard Helms. Do you go by Rick or Richard? Richard: I go by Rick. Debbi: Yes, I always call you Rick [laughs]. So, very cool, Rick. Thanks for being here. I'm so glad you could be here. Richard: Well, I'm happy to be here. I appreciate you having me today. Debbi: Well, it's my pleasure and at this point, you said you have 19 published novels? Richard: Well, yeah. I have 19 that have been published. I think three of them are still in print. So, a bunch of them are available as ebooks, but most of my novels right now are out-of-print for any of a number of reasons. My own publishing company folded up back in 2011 and several of the books were on that, and Five Star (I'm one of the Five Star orphans). Some of you may not be familiar with Five Star. It was a division of Cengage Learning, which used to be Houghton Mifflin. It was Thomson-Shore and all these other, but anyway, they folded their mystery thriller line, I guess January of 2015 and I got the message on my birthday that my book publisher was going out of business. Not only that, but my books were going to be going out of print. So, the books that I had with Five Star are largely out-of-print at this point, but I have had 19 published up to this point beginning all the way back in 1980, which is probably before a lot of people watching this were born, when I had my first couple of novels published by World Karting Magazine. I was a go-cart racer back then when I was in college and Anne Bazzoli-Kugler with World Karting Magazine talked me into writing a series of stories about a driver named Karl Geary and the two books, Geary's Year and Geary's Gold were serialized over the course of about four years in World Karting Magazine. I immediately got to work and started writing an adult style thriller. At the time I was really reading a lot of Robert Ludlum and Ken Follett and David Morrell and so I decided I was going to write a Ludlum-style thriller called, The Valentine Profile because obviously getting published was so incredibly easy that all I had to do was dash it out and send it off and people would pay to publish it. I didn't see another book in print for almost 20 years [laughs]. So… Debbi: This is not a place to look for overnight success. Richard: Well, most of the overnight successes I know have been doing this for about 20 years [laughs]. Debbi: Exactly! Exactly! Richard: At one level or another. I mean [Robert] Crais was writing for TV for years; Lee Goldberg, too. You know people who've been slaving away in the salt mines of writing in the back rooms of the story-runner rooms, and a lot of them are now coming out as novelists and doing a really great job. Debbi: That's correct. That's true. I was going to ask you about stock car racing and if you'd ever considered writing a NASCAR novel. Richard: Well, I wrote a novella, which is currently…I have a book of short stories that's currently with my new book publisher. It's Clay Stafford Books out of Nashville, Tennessee. But I've sent them a short story compilation that includes an unpublis...

The Ghosts Of Langley, John Prados Smithsonian Associates, Interview Series By its very nature, the Central Intelligence Agency is an organization whose operations and history are necessarily cloaked in secrecy. What can outsiders really expect to learn about how the agency operates? John Prados, a senior fellow of the National Security Archive based at George Washington University, offers a clue: Organizations reflect the characters and personalities of their founders and giants in the field-for better or worse. Through a critical examination of CIA leaders past and present, Prados offers a window into the often-unknowable workings of the world of Langley. He looks at a series of CIA leaders, including George Tenet, Richard Helms, and Frank Wisner, analyzing their influences on the spirit and direction of the agency both during and after their tenures. In the process, he surveys key operations in modern CIA history-both successful and controversial-and offers insights into the agency's potential evolution. The Rockefeller World, Council on Foreign Relations, and the Trilateral Commission by Andrew Gavin Marshall It is quite apparent in the history of America from the late 19th century and into the 20th century, that the Rockefeller family has wielded massive influence in shaping the socio-political economic landscape of society. However, up until the first half of the 20th century came to a close, there were several other large dominant families with whom the Rockefellers shared power and purpose, notably among them, the Morgans. As the century progressed, their interests aligned further still, and following World War II, the Rockefellers became the dominant group in America, and arguably, the world. Of course, there was the well-established business links between the major families emerging out of the American Industrial Revolution going into the 20th century, followed with the establishment of the major foundations designed to engage in social engineering. It was with the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) that the changing dynamics of the Morgan-Rockefeller clan became most apparent. As discussed earlier in this book, the Council on Foreign Relations is the ultimate networking and socializing institution among the American elite. The influence of the CFR is unparalleled among other think tanks. One study revealed that between 1945 and 1972, roughly 45% of the top foreign policy officials who served in the United States government were also members of the Council, leading one prominent member to once state that membership in the Council is essentially a “rite of passage” for being a member of the foreign policy establishment. One Council member, Theodore White, explained that the Council’s “roster of members has for a generation, under Republican and Democratic administrations alike, been the chief recruiting ground for Cabinet-level officials in Washington.”[1] The CIA, as previously examined, is also no stranger to this network, since more often than not in the first several decades of the existence of the Agency, its leaders were drawn from Council membership, such as Allen Dulles, John A. McCone, Richard Helms, William Colby, and George H.W. Bush. As some researchers have examined: The influential but private Council, composed of several hundred of the country’s top political, military, business, and academic leaders has long been the CIA’s principal “constituency” in the American public. When the agency has needed prominent citizens to front for its proprietary (cover) companies or for other special assistance, it has often turned to Council members.[2] Roughly 42% of the top foreign policy positions in the Truman administration were filled by Council members, with 40% in the Eisenhower administration, 51% of the Kennedy administration, and 57% of the Johnson administration, many of whom were holdovers from the Kennedy administration.[3] The Council has had and continues to have enormous influence in the mainstream media, through which it is able to propagate its ideology, advance its agendas, and conceal its influence. In 1972, three out of ten directors and five out of nine executives of the New York Times were Council members. In the same year, one out of four editorial executives and four of nine directors of the Washington Post were also Council members, including its President, Katharine Graham, as well as the Vice-President Osborn Elliott, who was also editor-in-chief of Newsweek. Of both Time Magazine and Newsweek, almost half of their directors in 1972 were also Council members.[4] The Council also has extensive ties to the other major American think tanks, most especially the Brookings Institution, as well as the RAND Corporation, the Hudson Institute, the Foreign Policy Association, and of course, the special-purpose foundations such as the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, of which fifteen of its twenty-one trustees (as of 1971) were also Council members, and its president from 1950 to 1971, Joseph E. Johnson, was also a director of the Council during the same time period.[5] The Council and the major philanthropic foundations have had extensive ties not only to each other, but in working together in constructing research and programs of study in foreign affairs. The State Department undertook a study of 191 university-connected centers for foreign affairs research, which revealed that the largest sources of funding came from the Ford Foundation (which funded 107 of the 191 centers), the federal government (which funded 67 centers), the Rockefeller Foundation (18 centers), and the Carnegie Corporation (17 centers), and that, “for eleven of the top twelve universities with institutes of international studies, Ford is the principal source of funding.”[6] These foundations, aside from being major sources of funding for the Council throughout the years from its origins, also share extensive leadership ties with the Council. At the top of the list is the Rockefeller Foundation, which in 1971 had fourteen out of nineteen of its directors also being members of the Council; the Carnegie Corporation followed with ten out of seventeen; then came the Ford Foundation with seven out of sixteen; and the Rockefeller Brothers Fund with six out of eleven board members also being members of the Council. It should also be noted that the Carnegie network extended beyond the Carnegie Corporation, and also included the Carnegie Endowment, the Carnegie Institute of Washington, and the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. From its founding until 1972, one-fourth of all the Council’s directors had served as trustees or directors of at least one of the several Carnegie foundations. John J. McCloy had served as chairman of both the Council and the Ford Foundation at the same time, from the 1950s until the late 60s.[7]
