Imagine this man in some vast city, New York or London. Imagine him on the third or fourth day of his solitude sitting in a house and hearing a ring at the door-bell!”*** Fredric Brown condensed this text to read "a sweet little horror story that is only two sentences long". Brown's short story then goes on to elaborate on those two sentences and builds a more complete plot around them. “Knock” was originally published in the December 1948 issue of Thrilling Wonder Stories. There have been three different radio adaptations (Dimension X, X Minus One and the Sci Fi Channel's Seeing Ear Theatre). And now it gets another adaptation – in this episode. They dive into both the 1959 Stanley Kramer film and the 2000 TV mini-series directed by Russell Mulcahy. Set in the aftermath of a nuclear holocaust, the story centers on a U.S. submarine that finds refuge in Melbourne, Australia, where residents face the grim reality that the fallout is heading their way.The episode explores the emotional depth and existential dread of both adaptations, from the restrained melancholy of Gregory Peck and Ava Gardner to the more modern approach with Armand Assante and Rachel Ward. With perspectives shaped by different eras, the hosts unpack how each version captures the quiet devastation of waiting for the end.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-projection-booth-podcast--5513239/support.

En: In a world that was once filled with life and sounds, there now ruled silence and ruins. En: Spring quietly came to life as the sunlight pushed its way through the dark clouds.Da: Desværre var ikke alt nyttigt.En: Unfortunately, not everything was useful.Da: Ruinerne strakte sig over den forladte by, med visne blomster, der nænnede at blomstre mellem sprækkerne i asfalten.En: The ruins stretched across the abandoned city, with wilted flowers daring to bloom between the cracks in the asphalt. En: An old school faintly lit up on the edge of the city. En: Here, Kasper began his daily routine, but this time, with a plan in mind. En: He yawned at the sight of the library, hidden behind the climbing plants. En: The school looked like a refuge from a forgotten time. En: With his little brother Mikkel by his side, they moved steadily forward. En: The world outside was dangerous, but within those walls lay a hope for a new beginning. En: Freja, the lively and ever-optimistic leader, had already found her way there.Da: "Godt at se jer!"En: "Good to see you!"Da: råbte hun over de knirkende gulvbrædder.En: she shouted over the creaking floorboards.Da: Hendes blå øjne glimtede med energi.En: Her blue eyes sparkled with energy. En: She had something up her sleeve, something that could create a small island of normality in the chaos surrounding them. En: "We're starting a school here," Kasper said firmly, looking at Mikkel, who was already sitting and looking in an enchanting book about the animal world.Da: Freja nikkede ivrigt igen, klar til at hjælpe.En: Freja eagerly nodded again, ready to help.Da: "Vi kan bruge bøgerne her.En: "We can use the books here.Da: Og se, der er endda tavler!"En: And look, there are even chalkboards!"Da: tilføjede Freja, mens hun pegede mod de støvede, gamle skiferplader.En: added Freja, as she pointed to the dusty old slate boards.Da: Men idyllen blev hurtigt truet.En: But the idyll was quickly threatened. En: A tremor went through the building, and a few windows rattled.Da: Udenfor, lød der råb og tumult.En: Outside, there were shouts and upheaval. En: A group of raiders approached, eager to steal whatever they could find.Da: Kasper vidste, han skulle handle hurtigt.En: Kasper knew he had to act quickly. En: Freja immediately grabbed an iron rod while Kasper secured the doors. En: Mikkel was hidden in an old wardrobe. En: The raiders pounded against the doors, but neither Kasper nor Freja yielded to fear. En: Instead, they gestured to their fellow citizens in hiding, who responded by emerging from their hiding places to confront the threat together.Da: De arbejdede i fællesskab, forsvarede skolen og hinanden.En: They worked collectively, defending the school and one another. En: With muscle and courage, they forced the raiders to retreat. En: Kasper, now realizing the importance of cooperation, also understood the significance of trusting others. En: Together, they could rebuild something meaningful in a world where everything else seemed lost. En: When the threat had disappeared, they all gathered around the small school, where doors and windows were repaired, books were shared, and inspiring learning took place once again.Da: Mikkel smilede op til sin bror.En: Mikkel smiled up at his brother.Da: "Skal vi lære om påsken nu?"En: "Shall we learn about påsken now?"Da: spurgte han ivrigt.En: he asked eagerly. En: Kasper nodded warmly, while Freja found a book about the traditions surrounding the holiday. En: The little school became a light in the darkness, a sanctuary for those who needed it.Da: Og for Fear is often Man's greatest enemy. But when there is nothing left to lose, there is everything to gain.... And with everything to gain, where is the enemy? The Outer Quiet by Herbert D. Kastle. That's next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast. If the name Herbert D. Kastle rings a bell, it's likely not because of his science fiction work. Kastle, born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1924, was primarily known as a thriller novelist, with an impressive seventeen titles to his name. Though his contributions to science fiction were modest—three short stories in the 1950s and another three in the 1960s—he gained some recognition for his 1964 sci-fi novel The Reassembled Man.In addition to his literary work, Kastle's 1975 novel Cross-Country was adapted into a feature film in 1983. He also ventured into television, co-writing an episode of Bonanza that aired in 1967.Today's tale of woe in a post-apocalyptic world is on page 94 in the May 1955 publication of If Worlds of Science Fiction, The Outer Quiet by Herbert D. Taking place within a future apocalyptic wasteland, Denzel Washington plays the titular Eli and he's traversing through this wasteland with an all-important book (hence the title)...along with a super-sharp machete blade, shotgun, killer instincts, and car battery-powered IPod Classic.  Things get hairy once he arrives in the wrong town where the local villain Carnegie (Gary Oldman) wants to take possession of this mysterious book.  And what results is an increasingly violent stand-off between Eli and Carnegie's small army of marauders lead by Redridge played by the late, great Ray Stevenson.  Along the way, Eli takes in a sort-of-protégé Solara played by Mila Kunis.  Directed by Allen and Albert Hughes (Menace II Society, Dead Presidents), this bleak action thriller borrows a LOT from The Mad Max Saga but it has a strong enough cast to keep things interesting....   Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene GershonSend us a texthttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/
