Happy September! August was a deeply transformative month, where many of us encountered significant emotional shifts. With Mercury retrograding from Leo to Cancer, we moved from the confident, authoritative energy of Magha into the introspective and intense realm of Aslesha. This transition brought up vulnerabilities and hidden emotions that needed to be addressed. It was a time of deep emotional healing, where many found themselves releasing old wounds and uncovering layers of pain that had been buried beneath the surface. This journey wasn't just about revisiting old ideas; it was about diving deep into the subconscious and bringing to light aspects of ourselves that were previously hidden. The energy of Aslesha, symbolized by the Kundalini serpent, urged us to confront these hidden parts of ourselves, pushing us to feel our emotions fully in order to heal them. For many, this process involved confronting insecurities, fears, and anxieties that had been lying dormant. Whether you felt the intensity of these energies or experienced them more subtly, August was a month where deep emotional work was done. The challenges and emotional releases that occurred set the stage for the new beginnings we're stepping into now in September. As we move forward, there's still time to continue this healing process, integrating the lessons and insights gained during this transformative period. I also want to say a big congratulations to everyone who joined the Fall 2024 Vedic Astrology Mentorship! Class is underway now and we have an amazing class of students from all levels of astrology experience. Intuition is that quiet, calm voice inside you. It's consistent and feels right, guiding you towards decisions that really resonate with who you are. Overthinking, on the other hand, is noisy, chaotic, and leaves you feeling anxious. It's that mental chatter that makes it hard to trust yourself. When you're caught up in overthinking, your mind is spinning with doubts and fears, making it tough to hear your intuition. Yoga and meditation are game-changers for quieting your mind and tuning into your intuition. Practices like asana (yoga poses), pranayama (breath control), and dharana (focused concentration) are super effective for calming your mind and bringing you back to your center. With regular practice, you'll start to notice the difference between those anxious thoughts and the calm, steady voice of your intuition. In yoga, we talk about cultivating sattva—the quality of purity and balance. Living a sattvic life means eating clean, spending time in nature, and doing things that bring you mental and emotional clarity. By cutting back on things that create inertia (tamasic energy) or agitation (rajasic energy), you make room for your intuition to come through more clearly. Staying grounded is key to keeping your energy stable and your intuition strong. Simple practices like walking barefoot on the earth or sitting quietly on the ground can make a huge difference. When you're grounded, you're more present and less likely to get lost in your thoughts. Grounded decisions are slow, steady, and feel solid—just like the roots of a tree. We live in a world that's always noisy, so carving out time for silence and stillness is crucial. Whether it's through meditation or just sitting in nature, these quiet moments help your mind settle so your intuition can rise to the surface. Some of my best ideas and insights have come from simply sitting in silence by the ocean or in a quiet space. Astrology is all about understanding change. Change in the transits, in your dashas, and, of course, in all areas of your life. In many episodes, I talk about the importance of the inner work of self awareness, reflection and meditation to best navigate these changes. In this episode I guide you through a simple meditation to get present to what is happening now and needed in your present moment experience. Every time you do this meditation will be different, because life is constant and continual change. This meditation is a way to come back to stillness and re-center amidst all the changes. This is almost the exact same practice I've come back to for over 10 years whenever I need to re center and get back to clarity. If you notice that more unfavorable expressions of a transit are playing out for you, it's a great warning sign to redirect your energy to take action towards the more favorable expressions of that transit. I share some examples in the new podcast. Like this: Rahu is in Pisces all of 2024 and many planets will be in Pisces soon. The negative side of all this Pisces energy could be that you become too dreamy, unrealistic and irresponsible. You could say "I want to write a song" and then do nothing to make it happen. That's a vision, but it's an incomplete vision. A favorable expression of all this Pisces energy is to have a more complete vision. The way an architect has a complete vision before a building begins construction. So you might say "I want to write a song that's inspired by x, y and z songs, about x topic, in x style" etc, and now you have a much clearer vision, and the path to make it a reality. In this way, anytime you notice more unfavorable sides of transits playing out, or unfavorable aspects of your chart, or the dasha you're in, this is how you can completely change your trajectory and create more positive outcomes. Simply getting clear on the more favorable expression, then taking steps and actions in that direction. This is especially important this week, because... The week ahead is a powerful time to set intentions and create a new, clear vision for your life. It was powerful, healing work, and one of my favorite experiences as a student in some time. I've been both a student and facilitator for countless containers like this over the years and in this episode I share about why I think these kinds of containers are one of the most essential parts of personal growth work. Every week here on the podcast I talk about aligning with the transits and making life changes. We all have desires and intentions of things we'd like to do, who we'd like to be and what we'd like to have. But the process from point A to point B with these things can be unclear and difficult to navigate on our own. A safe, well held container often allows you to do get these results on a deeper level, safely, more sustainably, and without the years of time and effort it would take trying to do it all on your own. I've been fortunate to work with many incredible facilitators over the years and see that any result I want in my life has likely been achieved in some form by someone else, and by working with them, it becomes inevitable that I will have similar results and experiences. I offer this now in containers like the Mindful New Year workshop, the Vedic Astrology Mentorship and the Quietmind Yoga Teacher Training. A container could be a few hours, a few days, weeks or months or even a lifetime. It works because you have a space to navigate all the stuff that is in the way of having the result or experience you want. The lack of knowledge, the fears, the incorrect assumptions, etc. And it's all guided by someone who has been in those same places on their journey. Whenever people ask me what studio to check out in Austin, Texas, I always recommend Practice Yoga on the East side. Rey Cardenas is the co-founder of Practice which recently celebrated it's 10 year anniversary. If you follow Rey or Practice on Instagram, you'll see he shares a lot about a unique take on philosophy from Rudolf Steiner, that I haven't seen from other yoga teachers. We talk about: - Rey's journey of co-founding a yoga studio in Austin, Texas, after facing challenges with his previous teaching position. Rey shared his experience of transitioning from being a professional poker player to becoming a yoga teacher and the process of finding a location for his studio. - The process of opening a yoga studio, including finding a vacant building, partnering with someone who had complementary skills, utilizing social media marketing, creating memes(!) and choosing a donation-based model. - Rey's process of finding a more balanced approach to yoga philosophy, moving away from an indulgent sort of philosophy towards a more grounded perspective that Rey found in Rudolf Steiner's work. - How to integrate different perspectives and practices into yoga teachings. They also explored the connection between Western and Eastern spirituality and the importance of awakening the chakras. - Rey gives a great introduction to the teachings of Rudolf Steiner, including his embodiment system, and the importance of the thought realm in human freedom. They also discussed how these concepts can be integrated into yoga and are integrated into the teacher trainings at Practice Yoga in Austin. Diana Hernandez is an international actress, TV host, and content creator with a highly successful and engaged Instagram audience. I met Diana while she was traveling through Oaxaca, Mexico and thought she would be a great guest to have on the podcast to talk about social media marketing and building an authentic online business. In this episode we talk about: Diana's decision to create a free masterclass on teaching influencers to make money online after receiving numerous inquiries from friends and followers about how to get brand deals and travel for free. Diana shares her journey of transitioning from a TV host to building her own social media presence and becoming her own boss. Kristine Weber, MA, C-IAYT, eRYT500 is a leading world authority on the neuroscientific benefits of slow, mindful movement and an advocate for the use of these practices as a solution to the healthcare crisis. She is leading the charge to get slow, mindful practices to people who desperately need them through her Subtle® Yoga Revolution series of online courses and trainings for yoga teachers – which have been praised by thousands all over the world. She recently wrote a great article in response to Dr Andrew Huberman and his Huberman Labs podcast. I invited her on to chat about it. Here's how her blog starts: “Dr. Huberman I'd love to talk to you about this [breathing] as a yoga therapist and armchair neuroscience geek who has spent more than a decade curating the research. I love your work and I realize scientific inquiry is by its very nature reductive. Today I'll share what I did and what I've noticed that successful teachers do after finishing Yoga Teacher Training. I'll also share what NOT to do! The Equinox means we are now in a new season of the year and this is an important time because Ayurveda teaches that “all diseases begin in the transition of the seasons.” This week is especially important to prioritize your healthy habits. Tongue scraping and drinking water for your dosha is one of the best things you can do to start the day and they are the two most essential parts of my morning practice that I have kept over the years. I give a walkthrough of this in the free workshop and explain a bit more in this week’s podcast. This Sunday we have a Full Moon in Virgo in the nakshatra of Hasta. The full moon each month is a time of reflection, completion of a cycle and celebration. The nakshatra / division of the sky known as Hasta means “hand” and is symbolized as a hand. Our hands are what make us human and hold many significant symbolic meanings. The 28 joints of all the fingers represent the 28 day lunar cycle of each month. The 5 fingers together represent the 5 elements and the 5 senses. The 4 fingers represent the 4 aims of life: dharma, artha, kama and moksha with the thumb being our ego / identity / free will to choose how to engage with the karmas that play out in our lifetime. This week marks one year of lockdowns and the dominance of Saturn. The restrictions, limitations and lockdowns are starting to let up as we finally move into a new energy this week. On March 10th there is a rare occurrence of 5 planets in Capricorn followed by 5 planets in Aquarius the very next day. A noticeable shift out of Capricorns earthy heaviness into the idealistic, progressive air element of Aquarius. Things literally start to lighten up. Restrictions loosen. Fear becomes less predominant in society and hope and optimism start to increase leading to Jupiter’s move into Aquarius on April 5th where this shift will fully be felt. We end this week with a new moon in Aquarius on Saturday the 13th and the Sun in Pisces on Sunday the 14th. With next week’s Spring Equinox we are really moving forward into a new season of life. This week’s last big push of Capricorn energy will return to a degree in the fall but after early next year we move into a totally new phase. So this week is the time to assess your foundations, your routines, schedules, habits, structures in your life and patch things up. There is huge potential, possibility and power in starting something new this month. In your personal practice, this Is a powerful month for alternate nostril breathing pranayama to help direct and focus the air energy of Aquarius. 53: How Do I Know If I’m Doing A Pose Correctly?

One of the most common questions that new teachers have his “am I doing this pose correctly?” This is a great question and really important to know if you're going to teach that pose. What do you look for? What should it feel like in your body? Is there really even just one correct way to do a pose? There are some important questions to consider when we're talking about a posture. First of all, whose standards are you following? Some lineages of yoga say that you have to do chair pose with your knees together and arms overhead. Other lineages say that you should adapt each pose to the individual student. Which one is correct? Is there a place for both? The word alignment gets thrown around a lot in the yoga context, but what does it really mean? It's really understand the postures we need to answer these questions and decide on what standards we are following and how we are choosing to define ‘in-alignment’ vs ‘out of alignment.’ Often these definitions are not as clearly defined as you might think. How can we define alignment? How can we know if a pose is correct or incorrect? Is that even a context that we want to frame our teaching in? I'll share 5 questions to consider that I teach about in my Quietmind Yoga Teacher Training to help you feel confident practicing and teaching all of the most common poses. Once you understand how to apply this to one pose you start to see how it applies to all poses. Whose standards are you following? How do you define Alignment? What are the common misalignments in this pose? What anatomical actions are happening in the pose? What are the possible progressions of this pose? Today I share a simple 20 minute meditation on the most important part of yoga practice: yogic breathing. This is great for beginners or anyone who wants to deepen the fundamentals of their practice. Yogic breathing may seem really simple - and it is - but It can have profound benefits. The average person breathes 12-20 breaths a minute. These are often shallow and emphasize the upper lungs. Breathing that way creates a Sympathetic Nervous System response - a stress response. Just by how you breathe! With yogic breathing we slow this down and breathe deeper into the lower belly using the diaphragm. As a former singer I learned this is where the power to sustain your breath comes from. This slower, deeper belly breathing also creates a Parasympathetic Nervous System response - a rest and relax response - which was very helpful to come back to throughout the week Ive had with power outages, water being shut off and food shortages here in Texas. Well, last week sure was a turning point in the year! The weather emergency and blackout here in Texas left me and millions without power or water for days, hence the delay in this episode. I'll share the insights I learned about blackouts, our current Rahu/Ketu 18 month transit (and the fascinating Kala Sarpa Yoga we are in now) and how this surprisingly all related to the 1962 transit I mentioned last week. We have two significant transits this week, both on Saturday with Venus and Mercury. I'll share my insights and perspective from this roller coaster week and how we can make the most of all of this from a yogic, holistic and empowering perspective. From them comes the 3 gunas: sattva, rajas and tamas which I will share about today. Learning these three qualities completely changed my approach to life and practice. Today’s episode is a grounding and centering practice to support you in regulating your nervous system during this uncertain time we are all experiencing with the unfortunate spread of Covid-19. From an Ayurvedic perspective we are experiencing a significant Vata dosha imbalance (change, fear, anxiety) and can balance this out by doing things that increase the Kapha dosha (earth, grounding, security) such as creating routines, eating grounding foods and doing practices like this. I believe we can all benefit from having the training and skills to regulate our nervous systems, especially in challenging, uncertain times. I hope this practice supports you in doing that so you can show up as a loving presence for others in your life. Many people are experiencing major losses and challenges with the spread of covid-19 and if you are not directly effected this an opportunity for you to apply all you have learned about yoga to be a loving presence for others and 'teach yoga' by how you show up for them. For those of you teaching in studios and in person - which is nearly all yoga teachers - you may be experiencing major transitions in your work. Studios are limiting class sizes and eliminating props. Corporate clients are now working remotely. How can you best navigate this in a traditionally in-person, service based industry? One thing I have done over the years is teach over video chat, and I am grateful to have that experience as I have been able to seamlessly transition into working with many of my clients this way. The main way we effect the immune system in yoga is through the Prana - the life force / vitality / energy of the body. We effect this primarily with breathing, but also with foods we eat, sunlight, activities. Yoga in general will always help improve this, but today we will focus more directly on that aspect of practice. One of the keys is to take slower deeper breaths rather than quick short breaths, and I'll share why. In modern discussion of yoga there is a lot of conflict about what is or isn't yoga. Now we have so many permutations, and so many people claiming their yoga is more authentic, who should we listen to? In this podcast I will go all the way back to the oldest written mention of the word yoga to explore it's definition and practice and how that applies to our modern, westernized approaches to yoga. I'll dive into one of my favorite sources of yogic wisdom, the Upanishads. A treasure trove of incredible teachings that are as relevant now as they were 2000+ years ago. Two of my favorite translation / commentaries on the Upanishads are this one by Eknath Eswaren and this one by Thomas Egenes. Both worth having in your library to review for years to come.
