Olaf Sakkers joins to discuss the purpose of mobility and transportation, the challenges of the current system, and the potential for a more efficient trip economy. Takeaways The purpose of transportation is to connect cities and enable economic growth. The current transportation system in the US is underperforming and has negative externalities, such as high rates of car accidents and wasted time in traffic. The trip economy, characterized by shared mobility services, offers more efficient and convenient transportation options. Efforts to improve the transportation system should focus on removing parking minimums, incentivizing better choices, and transitioning to autonomous vehicles. Creating positive change in transportation requires recognizing the flaws in the system, engaging in constructive conversations, and building companies that offer innovative solutions. Y me atrevo.

On this episode of the Scouting For Growth podcast, Sabine talks to Axel Thibon, founder of Wizest, the next generation of investment trading platforms. With his team, Axel aims to make personal investing more accessible, more engaging, and more consistent with today's digital platforms and changing consumer behavior. Today, people think that investing is complicated and intimidating. What if there was a platform to pair novice investors with financial experts? Before Wizest, Alex worked in banking for over six years. He led and guided 4 M&A/integration projects for banks ranging from $300M to $15B and led strategy and transformation initiatives in Renault Nissan Mitsubishi for nine years, Sabadell United Bank for five years, and has taken all that expertise to Wizest for the last four years. Axel has managed and launched a brand new digital bank from scratch. Sabine and Axel discuss why we need to make investing simple, the challenges with the current mass market wealth management platforms, how Wizest works, and the target market and sources of success. KEY TAKEAWAYS Wizest democratizes access to the stock market through technology so everyone can invest just like the top 1%. A Wizest client has access to a team of financial experts who invest on their behalf, and the client gets to choose which expert they have on their team with one simple click, instantaneously copying their portfolios. Axel had an interesting path before doing Wizest. He was a mechanical engineer for the Renault Nissan Mitsubishi group in charge of developing parts for electrical vehicles. When attempting personal investment for the future, Axel found the process complicated and unsupportive, and this is when he became inspired to enter the banking world, gaining experience from launching a digital bank from scratch, and eventually dedicating his efforts to making investment simpler with Wizest. Wizest solves the problem that limited capital investors have with the minimum investment barriers that banks place on investors, the investor's lack of experience and knowledge of the stock market, and the reluctance felt by the investor by the lack of inclusion and transparency of earlier platforms. When you use Wizest for the first time, you see people. It is very welcoming and personal, with the financial investors sharing their personal profiles first, so you can get to know them before you see their recommended portfolios and understand their styles of investment. Wizest is working to form partnerships with corporations to increase their reach by offering Wizest memberships to their employees. This kind of service is to offer a service in between savings and wealth management or private investment. There is global potential for this kind of financial accessibility solution. Axel recommends approaching investing as a personal experience. Rather than just approaching a bank and taking the standard road to retirement-type investments, take some time to consider your current financial situation and your goals fully. Stick to your plan and try not to react to every financial crisis. BEST MOMENTS ‘This is a journey that is shared by many of us. When we want to start investing with limited capital, we tend to go with cheap or even free solutions. If you don't have any finance background and don't know what to buy and what to sell, it's tough.' ‘It's not about the service itself, which is about being able to invest or trade, but how the investing happens. So that's what we decided to change with Wizest, which is different from the others because it's not only making it more convenient and accessible, but it is also changing how it is happening.' ‘From there, the user can choose one or several investors they like to build a team. They can build a team that is going to work for them. When I say that when you have $2,000, $5,000, and $10,000 to work with in Wizest, you then work with your team. Your experts help you build your real portfolio. The way you manage your portfolio is not by managing your underlying holdings but by managing your team.' ‘It's not like setting up a lemonade stand. To be able to launch Wizest, we have to be able to make sure we have a secure solution that is compliant with regulations and that we have the right sort of technical integrations.' ‘When you put the plan in motion, the most important thing most people forget is sticking to the plan. Don't be affected by what is happening today or tomorrow in the market or overreact and be scared because when we look historically over the last hundred years, the markets are always up and down.' With connectivity playing a pivotal role in new car experiences, IHS Markit looks at the major player set to dominate the infotainment market—Android. Google has a full suite of offerings under its automotive ecosystem with Android Automotive OS supporting Google Automotive Services (GAS), Generic Android core system that OEMs can build upon, the widely popular projection platform Android Auto, as well as Google Cloud. It has already secured business from the likes of Ford, Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi, Stellantis, General Motors and Volvo. We ask why Android is beating the competition, and if this will have ramifications on the smartphone industry, for example, will consumers move more toward an Android phone to align with their car software? And then there's the question of where this is leading—with Apple touted to launch its own vehicle through its Project Titan, can we expect an Android car as well?

Milyen út vezet Fuhishimától a tokiói olimpiáig? Az Orient Expressz új adásában Ferber Katalin közgazdásszal, gazdaságtörténésszel, Japán-szakértővel beszélgetünk a japán cégek elmúlt időszakbeli botrányairól, Carlos Ghosn ügyéről, a japán gazdaság állapotáról. PININFARINA BATISTA SHOWS UP WITH 1,900 HP IN LONDON "Ahead of its full UK debut at Goodwood this weekend, the Pininfarina Battista headed to London to launch the capital’s new ultra-low emission zone (ULEZ). The Battista, Pininfarina‘s first full car production effort, will enter production next year with deliveries starting towards the end of that year. That will be just a few months before London‘s ULEZ extends to the whole of Greater London." reports Dominic Wilde for InsideEVs.com: "A Rimac-supplied 120 kWh battery pack helps deliver 874 bhp and 1,694 lb-ft of torque, which is enough to rocket it from 0-60 in less than two seconds, to 186 mph in under 12 seconds, and onto a top speed of 218 mph. Range almost 300 miles, which is enough for a non-stop drive from London to Paris" Michael Perschke, CEO, Automobili Pininfarina: "“The Battista is a truly beautiful, guilt-free hypercar – the first EV to really fall in love with – because electricity enables us to develop it with zero emissions and as the most powerful car that will have ever been designed and built in Italy. As London joins many cities in moving towards a more sustainable future, we hope that the Battista also inspires a generation to consider electric cars, not just through the benefits of zero emissions, but also through the beauty and the performance that electrification offers.” https://insideevs.com/pininfarina-batista-shows-up-with-1900-hp-in-london/ FORMULA E OFFERS SUPPORT TO MOTOE AFTER FIRE "ABB FIA Formula E CEO Alejandro Agag says he has offered support to the organisers of the MotoE championship after a pre-season fire destroyed its fleet of electric bikes." reports Alex Kalinaukas for Motorsport.co: "The incident, which was caused by a short circuit that ignited a high-density battery in a charging point, at the Jerez circuit last month caused the inaugural MotoE season to be delayed until July. Agag said he reached out “just to show my solidarity to them” as a fellow electric motorsport series." Alejandrop told Autosport: "I sent a message to the guys from Dorna the next day saying that if they need our help, we’re here to help. We’ve done 50 races [with] not one single incident, not one single short circuit. But this takes a lot of work, a lot of experience, a lot of effort to make sure everything works." https://www.motorsport.com/motoe/news/formulae-offers-support-jerez-fire/4365118/ NEW RENAULT ZOE WON’T BE ALL-NEW, JUST A HEAVY REDESIGN INSTEAD "According to Renault design boss Laurens van den Acker, the upcoming new Renault ZOE will be a “heavy phase two design rather than a new car from the ground up,” reports Mark Kane today for InsideEVs.com. Rachel Burgess for Autocar says: "Pricing for the new Zoe is a long way off being announced, but it's likely Renault will try to keep at the same level to sustain its popularity as one of the most affordable EVs on the market. The new Zoe is expected to use a bespoke EV platform shared across the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance. That's instead of sharing its platform with the current Nissan Leaf, which uses an adapted version of the original 2011 Leaf's platform. The bespoke electric platform, which will be used for all forthcoming small to medium-sized EVs, will allow greater battery capacity for a range target of 250 miles under the new, more real-world WLTP testing regime. That's a match for the latest Zoe R110's NEDC range claim, which is claimed to be around 190 miles in the real-world." https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/new-renault-zoe-ev-be-heavy-phase-two-design H-D GETTING READY FOR THE LIVEWIRE WITH NEW CHARGING STATIONS The first of two stories coming to us via RideApart.com. "Harley-Davidson’s LiveWire electric motorcycle will be available for purchase nationwide beginning this August. They're already taking deposits. Harley has been busy installing Electric Vehicle charging stations at its dealerships. The LiveWire sports an SAE Combo CCS charging connector, which is the same as many American and European electric vehicles: Chevy’s Bolt and Spark, the BMW i3 and several electric Volkswagens and Mercedes. The LiveWire has a pricetag starting at $29,799, has a 140-mile city range and the capacity for a Level 3 charger, which means it will charge from a depleted battery to full in an hour or less. And Harley-Davidson wants you to spend that hour, of course, in one of its dealerships, checking out all the other bikes as well as the accessories available for your LiveWire." https://www.rideapart.com/articles/316318/harley-davidson-installing-charging-stations/ Meanwhile Sabrina at RideApart.com picks up on the noise a Harley makes: "The beauty of a silent, electric motorcycle is that it leaves a blank canvas of sound to be painted with your own colors. This is at least what Harley-Davidson believes in. The company addressed early concerns about the Livewire “not having a typical Harley sound” by promising its first electric model will have a signature sound nonetheless. We now know that the Milwaukee brand will actually dive into its history to give the Livewire a truly unique sound. In fact, the company confirmed that the model will come equipped with a customizable note function and a variety of engine sounds to choose from, accessible via the onboard computer. The system will use a compact “engine sound system” that will use two speakers located on the tail of the bike to produce the artificial engine sound. The system will be synched with the throttle input, which means the bike will mimic the sound of an engine at idle and increase the “revolutions” as soon as the throttle is twisted." https://www.rideapart.com/articles/316258/harley-livewire-customizable-engine-sound/ CCW REBUILDS OVER 50 DIESEL BUSES TO ELECTRIC, OFFERS 466 KWH PACKS "Complete Coach Works (CCW), headquartered in Riverside, California took a different path of electrifying buses – instead of offering new electric buses, they are rebuilding existing diesel buses to electric drive. Operators can literally convert their existing fleet or purchase newly refurbished buses from CCW’s inventory and reportedly save money compared to brand new vehicles." says nsideEVs.com today: "So far, CCW deployed more than 50 Zero Emission Propulsion System (ZEPS) in the U.S., which covered over 3 million revenue miles (on average roughly 60,000 miles per bus). One of the customers operates 30 ZEPS buses." https://insideevs.com/ccw-rebuild-diesel-buses-to-electric/ GERMAN PROSECUTORS FIND COLLUSION BETWEEN AUTOMAKERS OVER DIESEL EMISSIONS "European anti-trust regulators say they have found collusion among German automakers to avoid cleaning up tailpipe emissions. On Friday, anti-trust regulators for the European Union charged BMW, Daimler, and Volkswagen with colluding to block the introduction of effective diesel and gasoline emissions technology." says Green Car Reports: "Volkswagen has already paid $1.2 billion in fines in Germany over its diesel emissions shortfalls. BMW and Daimler have paid $9.5 million. All three automakers have shifted their focus from developing new diesels to spending billions of dollars to develop electric cars and build up supplies of batteries to power them. EU regulators said the new charges are not related to emissions cheat devices. but to failing to offer the latest, most effective emissions reduction technologies to European consumers (for both gas and diesel engines.)" https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1122486_german-prosecutors-find-collusion-between-automakers-over-diesel-emissions COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week.

VOLKSWAGEN'S ELECTRIFY AMERICA BUYS TESLA DEVICES FOR EV CHARGING STATIONS Reuters: "Volkswagen AG unit Electrify America said on Monday it will install Tesla Inc battery storage packs at more than 100 charging stations across the United States to keep costs down for drivers charging electric vehicles. Tesla Powerpack battery systems draw power from the grid during off-peak hours and store it for use during peak hours to avoid or reduce demand charges. Electrify America will install most of its battery packs in areas of the United States where there is a higher concentration of electric vehicle owners, particularly on the West Coast and the Northeast." Bloomberg: "The 210-kilowatt battery systems will each have about 350 kilowatt-hours of capacity. Terms of the deal weren’t disclosed and a Tesla spokesman declined to comment. TechCrunch: "The company will begin the next phase of installations this summer. Electrify America’s bet on Tesla battery systems illustrates the deep need for electric vehicle charging infrastructure that is low cost, easy to access and as fast as possible. It’s not enough to simply dot highways and urban areas with public chargers. The deal also represents a small, yet possibly fruitful area for Tesla as it tries to grow its energy storage business." Inverse: "Tesla develops the Powerpack for use with renewable energy sources like wind and solar, enabling buyers to store power and distribute when needed. The firm’s biggest installation to date is the 100-megawatt facility in Hornsdale, South Australia, used to help the renewables-dependent state avoid blackouts. Other consumers include the Manchester Science Park, using the batteries to create an “energy island,” and the Netherlands’ LomboXNet charging facility that uses solar energy to power electric cars." https://www.reuters.com/article/us-volkswagen-electrifyamerica-tesla/volkswagens-electrify-america-buys-tesla-devices-for-ev-charging-stations-idUSKCN1PT1NK https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2019-02-04/volkswagen-to-use-tesla-batteries-at-u-s-car-charging-stations https://techcrunch.com/2019/02/04/vws-electrify-america-will-use-tesla-battery-packs-to-lower-charging-costs/ https://www.inverse.com/article/53004-volkswagen-s-electrify-america-to-install-hundreds-of-new-tesla-powerpacks TESLA BUYING MAXWELL, COULD SIGNAL MOVE TO SOLID STATE BATTERY "Tesla is buying up Maxwell Technologies. In a deal expected to be finalized in the second quarter of 2019, the California automaker has offered $4.75 per share for the company. That’s a healthy 55-percent increase above the energy storage technology company’s share price of $3.07 at Friday’s market closing. The transaction is said to take the form of a stock swap and received unanimous approval from the Maxwell board." reports Domenick at InsideEVs: "Maxwell is mostly known for its ultracapacitors, which are used by other automakers. Indeed, Volvo’s Chinese parent company Geely partnered with the firm to use the energy storage devices in five of its hybrid products. But does that mean Tesla has picked them up for that particular technology? Maybe, but it should be noted that Maxwell, which has a footprint in Germany, South Korea, China, as well as the United States, has other tech that makes it valuable." Tesla told Electrek: "“We are always looking for potential acquisitions that make sense for the business and support Tesla’s mission to accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy.” Electrek said: "The automaker might be more interested with Maxwell’s dry electrode technology that they have been hyping recently. Maxwell claims that its electrode enables an energy density of over 300 Wh/kg in current demonstration cells and they see a path to over 500 Wh/kg." https://insideevs.com/tesla-buys-maxwell-technologies-solid-state/ https://electrek.co/2019/02/04/tesla-acquires-ultracapacitor-battery-manufacturer/ PANASONIC CUTS PROFIT OUTLOOK ON SLOWING CHINA DEMAND; TESLA BUSINESS A BRIGHT SPOT "Japan’s Panasonic Corp cut its annual profit outlook after disappointing quarterly earnings it blamed on a slowing Chinese economy hit by a trade war with the United States that hurt demand for auto components and factory equipment." reports Reuters: "China’s shrinking car market has crimped demand for automotive components, Panasonic said, while sales have also dropped for electronic devices used in air conditioners. The energy division, which includes its battery business with U.S. electric car maker Tesla Inc, provided some good news in a bleak quarter, posting its first operating profit in three quarters." https://www.reuters.com/article/us-panasonic-results/panasonic-cuts-profit-outlook-on-slowing-china-demand-tesla-business-a-bright-spot-idUSKCN1PT0CZ 8% PLUG-IN ELECTRIC VEHICLE MARKET SHARE IN CHINA! From Jose Pontes at CleanTechnica "After a 3 month streak of record-breaking sales, plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) in December just kept on pushing forward. China registered over 180,000 PEVs in December, making it the 4th record month in a row and achieving 70% year-over-year (YoY) growth. That meant that 2018 sales ended north of the 1 million units mark. Yes, over 1 million PEVs in one year. And to think that 2017 was the first year that plug-ins reached 1 million sales globally. The PEV market share hit yet another all-time best, ending the month with 8% share. The 2018 PEV market share ended at a record 4.2% share, double the share of 2017." https://cleantechnica.com/2019/02/03/8-plug-in-electric-vehicle-market-share-in-china/ 2020 PEUGEOT 208 EV SPIED COLD-WEATHER TESTING "Following the reveal of the all-new Clio, Groupe PSA is feeling the pressure from the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance for new, world-class products. The French part of the alliance won’t have it easy once Peugeot comes out with the all-new 208, which shares the CMP with the Opel Corsa." according to AutoEvolution: "Spied cold-weather testing in Scandinavia, the Peugeot looks similar to internal combustion-engined test mules. Styling is inspired from the 508, probably the coolest-looking sedan in the segment. The camera integrated into the rearview mirror enables Level 2 autonomous driving functions. By 2025, the French automaker plans to electrify 100 percent of its lineup, including Opel and Vauxhall." https://www.autoevolution.com/news/2020-peugeot-208-ev-spied-cold-weather-testing-132148.html MOBILE METERING: HONDA BUYS INTO UBITRICITY "Honda has acquired a significant stake in the Berlin-based company Ubitricity as part of a new financing round. The Japanese automobile manufacturer may have far-reaching plans with Ubitricity’s mobile metering technology." says an Electrive report: "electrive was able to glean the information about Honda’s participation in the Berlin-based company specializing in mobile electricity meters that for example turn street lamps into charging posts. Now a short announcement from deutsche-startups.de (based on the changes in the commercial register) confirms the Japanese manufacturer’s investment.Honda’s first fully electric model for the European market, the Urban EV, will probably go on sale in 2020. However, a near-series version will be on display at the Geneva Motor Show in March, and the production model will celebrate its premiere at the IAA in September." https://www.electrive.com/2019/02/02/mobile-metering-honda-buys-into-ubitricity/ COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week.
