Check out Dr. Mina's top picks for skin care here. If you're anything like me circa 2010, you may have thought of sleep as a waste of time in today's busy world. I mean, seriously, couldn't I be a whole lot more productive with 8 hours than just lying in bed?! Yikes, but that's exactly how I used to think about sleep. And in today's go-go-go world, it's easy to see how that message is propagated. But now I'm older and wiser (hopefully), and the word is getting out that sleep is not just a waste of time or a sign of weakness, but actually an integral part of our body's healing and vitality. I mean, they don't call it "beauty sleep" for nothing! While we previously viewed sleep as a period of downtime when our bodies and minds shut off, we now realize sleep is actually a dynamic, active state that plays a vital role in our physical health, mental well-being, and overall quality of life. Tune into this week's recap episode, where I share key insights from the latest podcast episode featuring Dr. Funke Afolabi-Brown. Key Takeaways: - Sleep is not a waste of time, but a critical time of self-care and restoration. - Establish a consistent sleep routine and environment for quality sleep. - Keep technology out of the bedroom and read before bed to calm the mind. - Going to bed early is essential for waking up feeling rested. - Cut back on device usage and mindless TV watching to create more time for sleep. - Consistent sleep routines are important for children of all ages. - Sleep is a vital component of overall health and skin health. Sleep is such an essential part of our well-being, but it often gets tossed aside when life gets hectic. When you prioritize sleep, you're not just setting yourself up for a better tomorrow; you're investing in a healthier, happier, and more productive version of yourself. Tune into this week's podcast with Dr. Funke Afolabi-Brown as she dives into why sleep matters, the benefits, tips for better rest, and whether aging makes sleep harder! Key Takeaways: Sleep is not a sign of weakness, but a necessary and productive activity for overall health and well-being. The recommended amount of sleep varies by age, with adults needing 7-9 hours, teenagers needing 8-10 hours, and children needing 9-13 hours. Consistency in sleep schedule and routine is key for good sleep quality. Creating a sleep-friendly environment, free from distractions and with optimal temperature and lighting, can improve sleep. Limiting technology use before bed and practicing calming rituals can help prepare the body for sleep. When waking up in the middle of the night, assess if there are any discomforts or needs to address before trying to go back to sleep. Supplements like magnesium and vitamin D can aid sleep, but they are not a substitute for addressing underlying sleep issues. Do you have trouble quieting your busy mind and establishing healthy sleep habits? Studies show that the average American does not get enough sleep. Dr. Funke Afolabi-Brown is a sleep specialist who grew up with a negative connotation around rest. Working all the time was the norm and expectation, which only grew more intense throughout med school and after having children. She became very anxious and her performance in all aspects of life declined significantly, when she had a sudden epiphany to begin setting boundaries with her responsibilities to prioritize rest. She experienced a major transformation in her life!Sleep actually clears the wasteful deposits that build up in the brain that can cause Alzheimer's, heart attacks and strokes. Our executive function, metabolism, responsiveness, and even our ability to learn and create are dependent on our sleep habits! Dr. Afolabi-Brown emphasizes that God Himself created rhythms of life. Jesus would step away to rest with His disciples to restore His energy. If the God of the universe rested, how much more do we need rest to reinvigorate ourselves? Establishing a bedtime routine that maximizes our sleep quality is imperative for a healthy, fruitful life.Learn more about Dr. Funke-Afolabi Brown's research and practice here. A healthy sleep pattern is vital for our physical, mental, and emotional well-being. When we consistently get enough high-quality sleep, we experience improved cognitive function, enhanced memory, and better concentration. It also supports a healthy immune system, promotes physical recovery, and helps regulate our hormones. Conversely, inadequate sleep can have profound effects on our mental health and weight management. Sleep deprivation can lead to increased levels of stress, anxiety, and depression. It affects our emotional regulation and can contribute to mood disorders. Additionally, inadequate sleep disrupts the hormones responsible for appetite regulation, often leading to increased cravings for unhealthy food and weight gain. Listen in to this episode as I talk with Funke Afolabi-Brown, MD, a triple board-certified sleep medicine physician, about the importance of sleep, common misconceptions of sleep, tips for getting optimized sleep, harnessing sleep as a superpower, and recognizing the immense potential that lies within a good night's rest. We'll discuss things like optimizing sleep habits by establishing a consistent sleep schedule, why it's helpful to establish a bedtime routine that signals to your body that it's time to unwind, the different stages of sleep and their significance, how watching TV in bed and taking naps can impact sleep, and sleep aids like melatonin.Dr. Brown is a speaker, coach, educator, writer, and the founder of RestfulSleepMD, where she helps busy professionals and organizations prioritize sleep to achieve their optimal health and thrive and live to their fullest potential. Sleep is often overlooked in today's fast-paced society. Many people sacrifice precious hours of rest to keep up with the demands of work and social life. However, sleep is essential for our overall health and well-being and should not be treated as a luxury. In fact, sleep can be thought of as a power charge for us, providing the physical and mental energy we need to function at our best. In this episode, Dr. Funke Afolabi-Brown, board-certified in pediatric pulmonary medicine and pediatric sleep disorders, emphasizes the importance of getting a good night's sleep, which plays a critical role in maintaining physical and mental health. Some of the biggest reasons people have trouble sleeping include stress, anxiety, poor sleep hygiene, and sleep disorders, but there are strategies to help those who work night shifts get a better night's rest, such as creating a sleep-conducive environment and engaging in relaxation techniques. Ultimately, getting enough quality sleep on a regular basis is essential for overall well-being and should be prioritized in our daily routine. Prioritize getting enough quality sleep on a regular basis to recharge your physical and mental energy and improve overall well-being. In this episode, Dr Irene and Dr Brown talk about all things sleep, including beginning Restful Sleep MD, how sleep affects your health, the different phases of sleep, children's sleep, the role of mindfulness, herbal remedies and sleep ‘hacks', and the effect of modern devices and medicines on healthy sleep. KEY TAKEAWAYS Dr Brown started Restful Sleep MD to help high-achieving women run at full speed without feeling exhausted from unsatisfactory sleep caused by depression, burnout and anxiety. Research makes it clear that sleep impacts almost every area of our lives. Studies even show inadequate sleep can affect your heart health, as it causes hypertension, damages our immune system and our mental health. Non-Rapid Eye Movement sleep has been divided into three stages, the first is a light drowsy transition to sleep, the second is when memory consolidation takes place and the third is deep sleep where recovery, restoration and biological functions such as growth hormones being released occur. Dr Brown's expertise also includes parenting strategies to help restful sleep in children, freeing up parents from interrupted sleep caused by wakeful children. The research on supplements is inconclusive and more likely a deficiency in our regular diet is to blame for sleeplessness. Valerian root and Melatonin cannot help you with the base psychological causes of insomnia. 30 to 60 minutes before bedtime, turn off all your bright screened devices as your brain interprets this light as day time and does not activate your sleep as a response to darkness. Alcohol causes very disrupted sleep despite the fact it can help you fall asleep. In response we often use caffeine during the day and this can cause a vicious circle. BEST MOMENTS ‘That then made me create this business that is really focused on delving into what is going on with your sleep as a Mom, you're exhausted. As an organisation what is going on with your employees? Their performance is declining. We talk a lot about wellness but we are really not implementing it when sleep comes into play.' – Dr Brown ‘It's really your passion and I can see it's very rewarding for you because you have obviously given your heart and patients have actually received the treatment and obviously can see the fruits of the treatment that you have given.' – Dr Irene ‘The idea is to have a basically good representation of each stage. When it comes to that, what's the percentage?' – Dr Brown ‘Is your mind full or are you mindful? If you think about it, many times we are so busy, we are running all day, we are exhausted and we just go straight into bed. We would assume that we would be able to sleep but we are not because our mind starts to race.' – Dr Brown ‘You want to make sure you optimise your environment. Make sure your environment is dark. Find a way to promote that melatonin. Number two is to make it quiet or noise free and the third is to make it cool.' – Dr Brown ‘You have to be willing to partner and be engaged in the process knowing that there is incredible long term gain, but it will take some effort.' – Dr Brown VALUABLE RESOURCES Join Patreon : http://www.patreon.com/drireneching Instagram: irene.ching.777 Tiktok: @ireneching777 Youtube channel: Dr Irene Ching Twitter: @ireneching7777 Clubhouse: @ireneching1 https://www.facebook.com/irene.ching.735 LinkedIn : https://www.linkedin.com/in/irene-ching-742623219 ABOUT THE GUESTDr Funke Afolabi-Brown is a board-certified sleep physician, speaker, coach, and consultant. If you’ve ever spent time around teenagers, you probably know that many teens are struggling with sleep. In fact, nearly 70 percent of high school students sleep less than the recommended 8-9 hours a night. In this podcast, we talk to Dr. Funke Afolabi-Brown about how we can make sleep cool to teens and their parents too! Dr. Afolabi-Brown is board-certified in pediatric pulmonary medicine and pediatric sleep disorders. As a double board-certified pediatric respiratory sleep medicine physician, Dr. Brown helps her patients breathe better and sleep better. By extension, she helps improve the sleep of their parents. Dr. Brown is a speaker, an educator, a writer, and the founder of Restful Sleep MD and also a member of Project Sleep's Expert Advisory Board. Our guest on today's show is an expert in all things SLEEP! Dr Funke Afolabi-Brown is a triple boarded physician who knows what it is like to battle to get good quality and quantity of sleep. This high achieving professional who is also a mom shares the most common interrupters of good sleep for us as professionals and some tips to help create better sleep habits. She has created RestfulSleepMD on the socials and a website to follow which is always engaging and providing the barriers to sleep and some hacks to CREATE sweeter dreams! Favorite moments from Dr Brown: when you think about the quantity of sleep, most times we go by the national sleep recommendations, which say seven to nine hours. But I tend to recommend you sleep in the number of hours that works for you. over the course of the day, you build up products on the surface of your brain the same way we have, you know, products that are lymphatic system washes out, and then when we go into sleep, especially when we go into deep sleep, which is a stage of sleep, you essentially have those channels opening and cleaning that debris off. And some of the proteins that have been shown to be deposited include things like beta amyloid, which has been implicated in conditions like Alzheimer's. CREATE: “C” stands for consistency, “R” stands for having a routine, “E” is the environment, “A” is "assign" the bed for sleep, “T” is technology, “E” is eliminate. I usually say sleep is not like a bank. So we can't fully catch up... If we have shifts and we've not been able to get enough sleep, then yeah, please do get some sleep. But if this becomes something that we are doing out of habit, the problem is we're not ever gonna be able to catch up. The Zoe MD podcast Host: Dr. Michele Johnson Guest: Dr. Funke Afolabi Brown Episode Summary Meet today's guest, Dr. Funke Afolabi Brown, Founder of Restful Sleep MD. Also an Associate Professor, Dr. Funke is currently serving as Associate Program Director for Pediatric Pulmonary Fellowship and the Pediatric Site Director for Sleep Medicine Fellowship at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. In this episode, Dr. Funke discusses the importance of sleep, sleep disorders, as well as practical tips that are highly beneficial to improve sleep. Her focus is on helping her patients breathe better and families sleep better. Episode Timeline: • [01:35] What made you interested in Sleep Medicine? • [04:50] The importance of sleep • [07:52] Common sleep disorders • [11:35] What would you recommend to improve the sleep of shift workers? • [16:06] Do you have any opinion regarding the use of melatonin? • [17:18] How to contact Dr. Funke. Notes Right from medical school, Dr. Funke realized that getting enough sleep helped her function better. While practicing Pediatric Pulmonology, a lot of complaints revealed how poor sleep due to breathing issues affected daytime function. These experiences encouraged her to delve deeper into Sleep Medicine Sleep is not just a cure for sleepiness. Sleep has a cleansing effect on the brain as it works through the Glymphatic system to remove protein build-up from the surface of the brain; some of these proteins have been associated with Alzheimer's disease. It also helps with metabolism, heart function, mood regulation, cognition, memory, and critical decision making. "When children are not sleeping, the parents are not sleeping" Common sleeping disorders in families include insomnia, poor sleep habits, Obstructive sleep apnea, Shift work sleep disorder, and Restless leg syndrome. Shift work sleep disorder is different from other sleep disorders because it occurs due to work schedule, and is associated with at least 3 months of daytime impairment that have no other medical explanation. It results in insomnia, excessive daytime sleepiness, and generally reduced total sleep time. How shift workers can optimize their sleep: Prioritize sleep by aiming for 7-9 hours of sleep, understanding that you may falter from time to time. Before a night shift, take a nap. At the beginning of the shift, expose yourself to bright light or you can have caffeine. Getting to the end of the shift, you would have to reduce exposure to bright lights; sunglasses are encouraged. When the shift is over, don't run errands, go straight home and sleep in a room with low lighting. The use of melatonin is not discouraged, however, it should not be a replacement for good sleeping habits. It can be used in small doses at the end of the night shift before you sleep. Listeners are encouraged to visit the Restful Sleep MD website and sign up for the newsletter to get tips for promoting healthy sleep habits. Key Quotes: "Sleep is a critical pillar of health" "Sleep makes us happy, it makes us healthy and it makes us more successful" "If you don't make sleep a priority, regardless of whether you have shift work or not, you're going to have trouble" Connect: Find | Dr. Funke Afolabi Brown Website - www.restfulsleepmd.com Instagram - @restfulsleepmd LinkedIn - Dr Funke Brown YouTube - Restful Sleep MD
