“Going back for a master's was exhilarating. So many of the things that I had been doing in my studio were corroborated with education. On the flip side, I had a lot of moments where I thought, “I've been doing that wrong. I should change that.” Having had years doing a lot of my own education—I attended conferences and did everything I could to soak up anything available to me—going back to school and having it corroborated and defined was career-changing.”Award-winning coloratura soprano Alisa Toy has an impressive thirty-year performing and teaching career. She currently teaches and performs at Washington State University as a Lecturer of Voice. Internationally, Alisa soloed in Great Britain, Canada, Pakistan, and Italy, including a concert for Pope Benedict XVI with the Rome Symphony Orchestra. Some of her past favorite soloing opportunities include Mozart's Requiem and Coronation Mass, along with multiple performances of Handel's Messiah and Judas Maccabeus. Opera and musical theatre roles include Pamina in Mozart's The Magic Flute, Gertrude in Humperdinck's Hänsel and Gretel, Maria in Bernstein's West Side Story, and Grace in Strouse's Annie.As a choral conductor, Alisa currently serves as the Artistic Director of the Lewis and Clark State College Concert Choir, the Assistant Conductor of the Palouse Choral Society, and previously served as the Artistic Director for the Columbus Choral Society.Memorable performances for her include the world premiere of John Purifoy's Chronicles of Blue and Gray in New York's Carnegie Hall and the world premiere of Benjamin Harlan's The Seven Last Words of Christ in New Orleans. Das man in achtunddreißig Dienstjahren eine Menge erlebt, ist klar. Aber dass man beispielsweise kurz vor Mauerfall als Protagonistin einer politischen Inszenierung des "Fidelio" auf der Bühne steht, die unverhohlen den DDR-Staat anprangert oder zur Millenniums-Operettenvorstellung einen Buhorkan über sich ergehen lassen muss, weil der Regisseur mal wieder verrückte Ideen hatte und man plötzlich Teil einer Skandalinszenierung geworden ist, ist schon außergewöhnlich. Zum Glück gibt es aber auch genug herzerwärmende Momente, an die sich Sabine Brohm mit strahlenden Augen erinnert. Da sind beispielsweise ihre Premieren als Susanna unter Leitung von Peter Schreier, noch als Mitglied des Opernstudios, oder auch die Antonia, Pamina, Donna Elvira und Marie in der "Verkauften Braut", denen sie ihren lyrisch-vollmundigen Sopran geliehen hat. Nach Abstechern in die leichte Muse ist sie heute die "Komische Alte", wie sie augenzwinkernd sagt. So wurde aus der einstigen Susanna die Haushälterin Marcellina, aus dem Gretelchen deren eigene Mutter und aus der Verkauften Braut die Ludmilla. Mit Freude steht sie heut aber dennoch noch auf der Bühne, auch ohne die tragenden Partien zu verkörpern. Es war mir eine große Freude, mit dieser wunderbaren Kollegin und Vollblutkünstlerin über das spannende Leben einer Ensemblesängerin eines so bedeutenden Opernhauses wie der Semperoper Dresden zu plaudern. Ihnen und euch auch viel Freude bei "Parlando" mit der Sopranistin Sabrine Brohm!

This Countermelody episode is the last in my miniseries featuring artists from Baltimore. It is also the last in my new episodes for Black History Month 2024 featuring “Forgotten Divas.” Today I offer to you the absolutely divine soprano of Veronica Tyler (1939-2020), who fits all three categories. In the 1960s, Veronica Tyler was a name on everyone's lips: she appeared on three different episodes of Leonard Bernstein's Young People's Concerts, she was the second prize winner of the International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow in 1966, the first time this venerable contest had featured singers, she was a featured artist at the New York City Opera, where, in their first season at Lincoln Center, she sang a Pamina in The Magic Flute of such humanity and transcendent vocal beauty that audiences were transported into another world. She sang under conductors Leopold Stokowski, Erich Leinsdorf, Zubin Mehta, Eugene Ormandy, Carlo Maria Giulini, Robert Shaw, and Stanislaw Skrowaczewski. Later on she made a belated Met debut in 1985 as Serena in their premiere production of Porgy and Bess, but gradually her high profile appearances became fewer and fewer and eventually she disappeared from view. Her death on 21 March 2020 was only announced three months later, and with little fanfare. But during her heyday, Veronica Tyler was among the most elegant, compelling, and ingratiating lyric sopranos in the business. I have scoured the archives to bring to light some of the artist's most beautiful performances, some of them virtually unheard for decades, including a 1980 album of spirituals that ranks among the best of this repertoire ever committed to disc. During a fifteen-year career, Ms. Léonard portrayed the lead female role in many well-known works; the first of such roles was in David Nixon's Butterfly when Nixon picked her from the corps de ballet to perform the lead. In the 2001/02 season she worked with Sir Peter Wright to dance the dramatic and technical role of Giselle. Other roles that Ms. Léonard enjoyed dancing include Odette/Odile in Galina Yardonova's staging of Swan Lake, Princess Aurora in The Sleeping Beauty, Lucy in Mark Godden's Dracula, Pamina in Mark Godden's The Magic Flute, the tender Cours D'Amour in Mauricio Wainrot's Carmina Burana and the lead role of Nancy in Val Caniparoli's A Cinderella Story. Ms. Léonard is known for roles that have been created on her including Tinker Bell in Jorden Morris' Peter Pan; Destiny in Mauricio Wainrot's Carmen, The Passion; March Hare in Shawn Hounsell's Wonderland; and Natalie in Jorden Morris's Moulin Rouge® – The Ballet. In 2009 Ms. Léonard danced the role of Juliet in Rudi van Dantzig's Romeo & Juliet for which she was called “simply stunning” by the Winnipeg Free Press. Ms. Léonard has appeared as a guest artist internationally, performing in galas with the Compania Nacional de Danza in Mexico City, the Benios De La Danse in Moscow, the 10th and 13th International Ballet Festivals of Miami, and the Encore International Dance Festival in Quebec. She has also been invited to dance with various companies and schools in full-length productions of Nutcracker, Swan Lake and The Sleeping Beauty in Canada, the USA and Spain. In 2009, Peter Quanz selected Ms. Léonard to perform a new piece called In Tandem at the Guggenheim Museum in New York City and at the 2010 Canada Dance Festival in Ottawa. As part of the Cultural Olympiad for the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympic Games she performed the lead in Iztik Galili's Hikarizatto. Since retiring from dance in 2013, Ms. Léonard has staged and coached many ballets for the RWB Company, Professional Division and Aspirant program. She has also staged full length ballets for Orlando Ballet, Louisville Ballet and the National Ballet of Cuba and has enjoyed guest teaching for schools and companies around the world.

Renouer avec le passé culturel de la ville de Bagnères, redonner au chant et à l'opéra la place qu'ils ont toujours eu dans cette ville, tels sont les enjeux de cet évènement. The excitement is brewing! Opera Omaha is ending this season with The Marriage of Figaro, and we had a lovely conversation with Michael Adams and Mary Feminear, who play the Count and the Countess in this beloved opera. Mary and Michael are married in real life as well as their characters onstage, and it made for a great interview. Our conversation was cut short because of technical problems, and we hope to talk with them again in the future. Both of these Creatives are immensely experienced and talented and it was an honor to talk with them. In Mozart's "The Magic Flute," Monostatos is smitten by the white princess Pamina, whom he is supposed to be guarding under the orders of the high priest Sarastro. His desire to love and belong is the source of anguish, as he feels unworthy of Pamina due to his race and enslaved status. "Mestres do meu universo" foi a primeira exposição a solo da artista e activista angolana Pamina Sebastião, na galeria Jahmek. Trata-se da continuação do projecto que iniciou em 2019, um processo de auto-reflexão que se chama Só belo mesmo. Um projecto que passa por escritos, colagens e desenhos. Pamina Sebastião vive em Luanda é jurista e mestre em Direito Internacional e Relações Internacionais, dedica-se ao activismo há vários anos. "Antes de tudo sou activista e uso a arte como ferramenta do meu activismo", apresenta-se Pamina Sebastião. "Mestres do meu universo?" é a primeira exposição a solo da artista. Trata-se da continuação do projecto que iniciou em 2019, um processo de auto-reflexão que se chama Só belo mesmo. Um projecto que passa por escritos, colagens, desenhos."A ideia é trazer algumas das perguntas ou dos questionamentos que tenho ligados à colonialidade do poder, ligadas às construções de categorias de géneros, da questão da sexualidade e trazer estas questões ao público", explica. Pamina Sebastião acredita que houve "uma evolução entre o que pensamos ser o colonialismo, de um tempo histórico e a colonialidade, uma estrutura global que continua a alimentar categorias como a de género, de raça, de classe". Um exercício feito olhando para questões de raça, género, sexualidade como inscrições feitas ao longo do tempo sobre aquilo que chamamos corpo.Por outras palavras, Pamina Sebastião defende existir uma estrutura de poder alimentada por ideias "do que somos, do que é ser homem, do que é ser mulher... Uma estrutura racista, patriarcal, capitalista que alimenta estas categorias, para se manter no poder. É particularmente importante falar disto num contexto como o de Luanda, que não tem debates aprofundados de como é que o ideal da branquitude ainda continua a ser uma realidade e de como o racismo ainda acontece aqui".Pamina Sebastião fez parte de vários colectivos e organizações ligadas a questões de género e sexualidade: o Ondjango Feminista, o Arquivo de Identidade Angolano e o projecto LINKAGES Angola. Hoje faz parte também da direcção da The Other Foundation, uma organização LGBTIQ'+ regional fazendo também consultoria de estigma e discriminação a nivel nacional . No geral tem trabalhado num activismo focado em discussões de género e sexualidade.

In early 2012, the coloratura soprano Marie-Eve Munger received an offer every opera singer dreams of — a lead role in a Mozart opera. But there was a catch. It wasn't a role in Don Giovanni, or The Marriage of Figaro, or any of the popular Mozart operas performed every season across the globe. The opera was Il sogno di Scipione, which Mozart wrote when he was just 16 years old. Munger had never heard of the opera before, but learning and performing it that year piqued her curiosity. How could Mozart write a compelling theatrical work like this at such a young age? And why was no one performing this music? Now, a decade later, that interest in exploring Mozart's early operas has blossomed into a new album from the French-Canadian soprano, Maestrino Mozart — a program of rarely heard arias Mozart composed between the ages of 10 and 16, which Munger performs with Les Boréades de Montréal under the baton of Philippe Bourque. "What I discovered in Il sogno di Scipione were incredible moments of musical depth and dramatic sense, an incredible mastery of the bel canto," Munger says on the latest episode of the Classical Post podcast. "Even at that early age, he was able to really capture the essence of what it is to be human." Over the course of the 12 arias featured on Maestrino Mozart, Munger shows us how the popular assumption that Mozart's earliest works are too simple or juvenile is just not the case. In these teenage works, one can clearly hear the maturity the composer would develop over the next 20 years. "[This music] sheds an interesting light on his later works as well. You can hear the seeds of Giovanni. You can hear the seeds of the Queen of the Night and Pamina. All of that is really in there already, and you can hear it. It's a very interesting way to rediscover a composer we think we know." "WIEN - Beethoven delayed" lautet das Motto der diesjährigen Ausgabe des Gstaad Menuhin Festivals. Mit etwas Augenzwinkern rettet das Festival damit Programme, die für 2020 geplant waren und stellt WIEN in den Mittelpunkt. Musikchefin Ursula Magnes berichtet vom zweiten Festivalwochenende aus dem Berner Oberland mit einem Ausblick auf die kommenden 3 Jahre, für die sich das Gstaad Menuhin Festival einiges vorgenommen hat. Gstaad ist ein internationales Dorf. Die beeindruckende Naturkulisse trifft auf Gäste aus aller Welt. Die perfekte Idylle. Die Festivalzentren sind zum einen die Kirche im benachbarten Saanen und das Festivalzelt in Gstaad. Die Geigerin Patricia Kopatchinskaja wirbelte gemeinsam mit Giovanni Antonini und Il Giardino Armonico Musik von Antonio Vivaldi gehörig durch die Musikgeschichte. Zwischen den Violinkonzerten serviert Kopatchinskaja Zeitgenössisches und Improvisiertes und geigt und tanzt diesem Konzertabend in der Kirche in Saanen jegliche Routine aus den Noten. Manch Konzertbesucher nahm auch mit, dass Antonio Vivaldi relativ unbemerkt in Wien 1741 verstorben ist. Während die Mutter von Cecilia Bartoli Silvana Bazzoni Bartoli im Rahmen der Gstaad Vocal Academy ihre Gesangstechnik und ihre Erfahrung an Teilnehmer und -innen der Meisterklasse weitergibt, musiziert der junge Koreaner und Gewinner des Internationalen Van Cliburn Klavierwettbewerbes 2017 Yekwon Sunwoo in der Matinée des Jeunes Etoiles Schubert-Bearbeitungen von Franz Liszt. In der Kapelle Gstaad mitten auf der Promenade gelegen, wo sich Radfahrer, Bergsteiger, Wanderer und flanierende Urlauber in lockerer Atmosphäre mischen. Am Abend dann Mozarts Zauberflöte in einer halbszenischen Aufführung mit auf den Bühnenwänden projizierten Visuals vom Videodesigner und Regisseur Benoît Bénichou. Christophe Rousset und Les Talens Lyriques führten ein internationales Ensemble durch das Werk, das immer wieder begeistert. Das Orchester auf der Bühne bot die seltene Möglichkeit Mozarts Orchesterfarben sehr unmittelbar zu erleben. Eine Klangvielfalt, die sonst oft im Orchestergraben untergeht. Erfreulich: der junge österreichische Bariton Christoph Filler ist für den angekündigten Georg Nigl als Papageno eingesprungen und überzeugte das Publikum als lustiger Naturbursch. Rocío Pérez gab eine Lady Gaga gleiche Königin der Nacht mit sicheren Rache-Höhen. Sandrine Piau als ausdrucksstarke Pamina und Jeremy Ovenden als nicht immer leicht verständlicher Tamino bestanden auch in Gstaad die Prüfungen der tugendhaften gestrengen Tempelwelt Sarastros. Sowohl stimmlich als auch darstellerisch beeindruckend war der junge Bassbariton Alexander Köpeczi als Sarastro. Seine schlanke und edle Stimme muss man sich merken! Viel Applaus im Festivalzelt, das sich zwischenzeitlich durch einen heftigen Regenguss auch akustisch bemerkbar machte, was das musikalische Geschehen auf der Bühne aber nicht weiter störte. Spannend zu hören was Festivalindendant Christoph Müller für die nächsten drei Jahre plant. Der Zyklus Wandel umfasst für die Jahre 2023 bis 2025 die Themen Demut, Tranformation und Migration. Dafür wurde Patricia Kopatchinskaja als Botschafterin und Patin gewonnen. Mit dieser Programmierung will das Festival Impulse kreieren und Neues wie Notwendiges anpacken, so Intendant Christoph Müller. Jessica first got to know Shuo in college in the opera The Magic Flute, where he was the Papageno to Jessica's Pamina. A year later, he was Jessica's collaborative pianist for her senior recital. After a few years working in finance, Shuo followed his passion for architecture and went to Yale for his masters degree. He now works with Frank Gehry at Gehry Partners, where he's taken on projects ranging from cultural centers and exhibitions to private homes to the recently-adopted LA River Master Plan. Since 2015, Shuo has sung with the GRAMMY-Award-winning Los Angeles Master Chorale. Den Inhalt der „Zauberflöte“ stringent zu erzählen, ist gar nicht so leicht. Emmanuel Schikaneder hat anno 1791 eine Wiener Vorstadtmischkulanz gemischt aus Märchen, exotischer Tierwelt und Freimaurerriten. Dazu die geniale Musik von Wolfgang Amadé Mozart. Die amerikanische Regisseurin Lydia Steier hat ihre Inszenierung aus 2018 kräftig überarbeitet. Am Pult der Wiener Philharmoniker stand nach der erfolgreichen „Così fan tutte“ der letzten beiden Jahre Joana Mallwitz. Die „Zauberflöte“ ist vom Großen Festspielhaus ins Haus für Mozart übersiedelt. Und das hat dieser Produktion mehr als gut getan. Die Erzählperspektive bleibt die gleiche wie vor vier Jahren: In einer wohlhabenden gutbürgerlichen Familie in einem Wiener Innenstadtpalais der Jahrhundertwende am Vorabend des Ersten Weltkrieges erzählt der Großvater seinen drei Enkelsöhnen die Geschichte der Zauberflöte. Burgschauspieler Roland Koch übernimmt diese Rolle in der Dialogfassung von Ina Karr und Lydia Steier und damit auch die meisten originalen Sprechtexte der Partitur. Die Zauberflötenfiguren entschlüpfen der häuslich gewohnten Umgebung und sind doch luzide Träume. Aus der hysterischen Mutter fährt die Königin der Nacht samt kolossalem Tischtuch mit ihrer ersten Arie förmlich in die Höhe und aus der Haut. Eine packende Szene. Tamino ist ein erwachter Zinnsoldat und der Papageno „ist doch der Sohn vom Fleischer“ rufen die Buben. Tenor Stefan Vitu rührt derweilen im Unterstock als dicke Köchin und spätere alte Papagena kräftig im Suppentopf. Eine geschickt ausgedachte Drehbühne von Katharina Schlipf erzählt die Geschichte räumlich weiter bis im zweiten Akt die geschlossene Welt der strengen Tugend Sarastros erreicht wird. Hier gibt es keinen Auf- und Einstieg ohne Prüfungen. Videoprojektionen von Momme Hinrichs werfen am Ende die Schrecken des Ersten Weltkrieges auf diese Männerwelt in Anzug und Melone inmitten von Karriertreppen und ebensolchen Türen. Hingegen dürfen bunte Schmetterlinge erscheinen, wenn es um die Liebe geht und die Kuscheltiere der drei Knaben spazieren ebenso überlebensgroß durch die zweigeteilte Bühne, mit einem Oben der Herrschaft und einem Unten der Dienstboten. Sängerisch weiß vor allem Regula Mühlemann als Pamina zu berühren. Die große Abschiedsarie „Ach ich fühl es“ in Mozart‘schem g-Moll gehört zu den musikalischen Höhepunkten des Abends. Mauro Peter als Tamino wirkt in der Höhe etwas verhalten und unsicher. Der junge Wiener Michael Nagl gab einen launig frischen Papageno, der mit Maria Nazarova schließlich auch seine Papagena findet. Tareq Nazmi als Sarastro und Brenda Rae als Königin der Nacht erfüllen ihre Aufgaben. Hervorzuheben sind unbedingt die luxuriös besetzten drei Damen, gesungen von Ilse Eerens, Sophie Rennert und Noa Beinart. Peter Tantsits als Monostatos sah furchterregender aus als er kaum hörbar sang. Die drei Knaben aus den Reihen der Wiener Sängerknaben sind ständig auf der Bühne und meistern ihre zentrale Rolle in dieser Inszenierung schauspielerisch und gesanglich bravourös und erhalten dafür vom Premieren-Publikum auch tosenden Applaus. Joana Mallwitz leitet die Wiener Philharmoniker absolut Sänger und Sängerinnen freundlich, wobei sich die berührende Schwerelosigkeit der Musik Mozarts gelegentlich etwas vermissen lässt.

Both Julie and Anastasia went through traditional conservatory training, and were both taken aback by the insistence that there's only one prescribed path to success in opera. Today I am talking to soprano Henriikka Gröndahl. In our chat we discuss how career trajectories can change over time and the possible influence of relationships and parenthood on negotiating a singing career. Henriikka Gröndahl is a versatile lyric soprano with one foot firmly in the chorus of the Royal Opera House in Stockholm, and the other foot happily freelancing. Her career began with a boom at the Theatre Royal, Glasgow in 2004, when she stepped in as the cover of Mimì in La Bohème. She sang a total of 11 performances of it for Scottish Opera – both at the Theatre Royal in Glasgow and at the Edinburgh Festival Theatre. During her first years out of college, she also sang Pamina for British Youth Opera and Papagena (covering Pamina) for Garsington Opera, followed by a Pamina , Nannetta, Musetta and Julia at Gothenburg Opera in Sweden, Musetta and Princesse at the Royal Opera in Sweden and Fünfte Magd at Liceu in Barcelona, Fiordiligi for Samling Opera and Donna Elvira at Scottish Opera. She has since then stepped in at short notice to sing Liù at Gothenburg opera, Jorun at Vadstena Summer Academy and Olympia/Giulietta/Antonia/ at Folkoperan, where she later also performed Liù. Her latest role was Euredice (Gluck) at Norrlandsoperan, as well as small obscure solo bits and pieces at the Royal Opera in Stockholm. Her career has led her to sing in many countries around Europe, and she frequently performs at chamber music festivals and oratorios, but is nowadays also old enough to engage in other non music related activities like hiking, paddling, hanging out with friends and family, painting, throwing dinner parties and passionately enjoying life!www.henriikkagrondahl.com

We are so excited to extend a warm welcome to two incredibly talented women, Kathryn Lewek and Janai Brugger! You may have seen Lewek on the stage in more complex roles as her voice fares well as The Queen of the Night in Mozart’s famed “Die Zauberflöte (The Magic Flute)” or even Ginevra in “Ariodante”. Das gelinge auch, weil die Inszenierung mit körperlicher Nähe per se sehr bewusst und sparsam umgehe. Raised in Victoria, BC and currently based in Berlin, Rachel began her professional career at Vancouver Opera as part of the inaugural year of the Yulanda M. Faris Young Artists Program. Her roles with VO have included Pamina in The Magic Flute, Mabel in The Pirates of Penzance, Zerlina in Don Giovanni, and most recently, Susanna in Le nozze di Figaro (The Marriage of Figaro, 2017). Rachel's show, Fenlon & Fenlon, in which she is featured in the dual role as singer and pianist, has been presented across Canada and Europe. On today's episode of Opera for Everyone we listen to The Magic Flute, also known as Die Zauberflöte, by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. It's an opera in two acts, first performed in Vienna in 1791. In this opera the Queen of the Night persuades Prince Tamino to rescue her daughter Pamina from captivity in the Temple of Wisdom under the high priest Sarastro. Tamino is accompanied on his quest to the Temple of Wisdom by the earthy Papageno, a bird-catcher, who is also looking for true love. Together they learn the high ideals of Sarastro's community and seek to join it. Separately, then together, Tamino and Pamina undergo severe trials of initiation, which end in triumph, and with the Queen and her cohorts vanquished. Papageno fails the trials completely but is nevertheless rewarded with the hand of his ideal female companion, Papagena. Ein Moment, der immer mal wieder zurückkehrt, nämlich immer dann, wenn Menschen das Führungskräftetraining mit Hund mit einem Hundetraining verwechseln. Der entscheidende Unterschied liegt darin, dass ich, in erster Linie den Menschen im Fokus habe, während der Hundetrainer sein Augenmerk auf den Hund legt. Ein, neben den theoretischen Inhalten, ganz entscheidender Unterschied. Wie hast Du es geschafft, Deine Leidenschaft zu finden? Ich habe über 30 Jahre im internationalen Konzernumfeld als Führungskraft gearbeitet, davon 22 Jahre im europäischen Ausland. Gleichzeitig hatte ich, seit meinem 12. Lebensjahr, Hunde und habe diese in meiner Freizeit auch immer ausgebildet. Als ich mich dann selbstständig machen wollte, habe ich nach einer Geschäftsidee gesucht, in die ich einerseits meine Erfahrung als Führungskraft und andererseits meine Liebe zu den Hunden einbringen konnte. Was war der wichtigste Schritt, der Dich zum großen Erfolg gebracht hat? Die Erkenntnis ins Tun zu kommen, anstatt lange, immer besser ausgearbeitete Pläne, zu schmieden. It’s funny, and surprising—which is surely part of the appeal—but it also has a bit of the ring of truth.On this podcast, we’ll hear a couple “stolen” tunes as reinvented by Beethoven.We begin with the variations for cello and piano on Mozart’s aria “Bei Maennern,” from The Magic Flute. The original tune is a charming duet between the opera’s heroine, Pamina, and the comic lead, Papageno, about the blissful rewards of married life. The piece is performed by cellist Wendy Warner and pianist Irina Nuzova.The borrowed tune in the work that follows—Beethoven’s string quartet No. 8 in E Minor, the second of the “Razumovsky” quartets—is a Russian theme, in honor of the count to whom they were dedicated. In this particular quartet, a well-known tune crops up in the third movement, one that was also used by both Mussorgsky and Rachmaninoff in their works. We’ll hear the Borromeo String Quartet perform the piece.
On the Spark episode "By Hand," glass artist Pamina Traylor turns molten glass into pieces of lyrical beauty. Even though Traylor's glass work is by hand, her hands initially can't touch the glass itself. She begins by dipping a pipe into a lake of molten glass the consistency of honey, gathering it out, and starting to shape and blow the glass. Then Traylor often relies on many sets of hands to strike while the glass is hot.
