I had been really looking forward to talking to Julian Ovenden but the conversation I ended up having with him was extraordinary and unexpected. Not only is he a talented actor appearing in some of our best loved TV shows and theatre productions: Downton Abbey, Bridgerton, Foyle's War, My Night with Reg, All About Eve to name but a handful, he is also a hugely talented singer whose concerts, albums and worldwide performances have touched the hearts of many. He is a winning combination of self-deprecating, funny, and honest and he generously shared some of the best and worst periods of his life. At times hilarious, at others heartbreaking and at all times fascinating, this is an important, entertaining and ultimately uplifting conversation. I feel honoured have been part of it and to be able to share it with you. Related Links Follow Julian Ovenden Julian Ovenden - YouTube

My guest on this segment of "The Strange Reality with Dave Emmons" is Victoria Mundae. The show was recorded on 12-12-24. Victoria tells us about her early experiences with the paranormal and ghosts. She has been described as a "spooky Elle Woods" rolled up in a ball of Sunshine. She has had paranormal experiences since she was 2 1/2 years old. Victoria would draw sketches of places before she went to those locations. Victoria has a talent for remote viewing. She says she does not consider herself a paranormal investigator but a "paranormal experiencer." Victoria tells us about being alone in the most haunted place in Texas and experiencing the shadows and figures of a man. She explains her talents as a lightworker and tells us about her encounters throughout her life. Victoria is an author and Paranormal Radio Host of "Edge of The Rabbit Hole" and appears as a paranormal podcast panel Host on "When Spirit Connects." Victoria is a contributing author to several literary collections, and her writings have appeared in the paranormal literary journal "The Feminine Macabre: A Woman's Journal of all Things Strange and Unusual." Victoria's books include "My Night in the Most Haunted Hotel in Texas, Tarot, Reimagined, and Paranormal Activities; Victoria is currently wrapping up her first volume of poetry, "The Haunted Muse." She was profiled in the book "A Walk in The Shadows" and the TV mini-series "The Shadow Dimension." You can find her books and website at www.VictoriaMundae.com

In this episode we're joined from Nashville by acclaimed critic, author and broadcaster Ann Powers for a discussion of her new Joni Mitchell book. Starting in Ann's native Seattle, we hear about her early '80s pieces for The Rocket before moving on to her stints at the San Francisco Weekly and the New York Times. Mention of Piece by Piece, the 2005 book she wrote with Tori Amos, leads us to clips from Steven Daly's 1998 audio interview with Amos and a broader conversation about the wave of female singer-songwriters that engulfed pop music in the '90s. Ann's noughties move to California and the L.A. Times prompts discussion of the "dreamlike" night she spent chez Prince on New Year's Eve, 2008. From there we jump to the life and music of an artist Prince admired more than most: Joni Mitchell, subject of Ann's remarkable new book Travelling. With particular focus of 50-year-old jazz-rock masterpiece Court and Spark, we explore the richness and complexity of Joni's '70s work, her deep engagement with the Black American experience, and the worship she's experiencing in the wake of the recent "Joni Jams". Many thanks to special guest Ann Powers. Travelling: on the Path of Joni Mitchell is published by Harper Collins and available now from all good bookshops. Pieces discussed: Ride the Unicorn: Tori Amos, Sarah McLachlan, Tanita Tikaram, Tori Amos (1998), My Night with Prince, Joni's Jazz-rock and Fusion's Big Bang, A New Canon: In Pop Music, Women Belong at the Center of the Story, Louise: Sheepish in wolverine's clothing, Millie Jackson: The Poor People's Queen and Chvrches: "It only takes two seconds to say: I don't agree with white supremacy."

Felicia is joined by Calvin Kemph to discuss Catholic guilt and philosophy through the character's in My Night at Maud's (Éric Rohmer 1970). We chat about how important it is that this film was shot in black and white and how this story could also fit within his tale of four season series. This marks the end of the Rohmer series, one that I felt such a great delight in putting together and had some of the best conversations on the show so far. I hope you're inspired to tackle the rest of his filmography because I truly believe there is a Rohmer film out there for everybody. Author, critic, teacher, moralist, and editor of Cahiers du Cinema, Éric Rohmer is this month's featured director from the French New Wave. Alex and Jonathan look at three of the six films Rohmer directed based on a series of his own short stories called the "Moral Tales" – My Night at Maud's (1969), Claire's Knee (1970), and Love in the Afternoon (1972). We discuss Rohmer's literary approach to filmmaking, the ways he builds multi-dimensional characters through extensive dialogue, and his preference for the "invisible camera" as opposed to the self-aware methods of some of his fellow French New Wave directors. Hey Peoples, Just over 21yrs ago I put out an album called Moments of My Night. It was my first mix released on CD, so it holds something of a special place in my memory. The concept is straight forward & is essentially a check list of tracks that I was hearing at various stages as my night progressed. Of course, much has changed since then, not least that we now have more than 74mins to play with. The other thing is that it's now gotten harder & harder to find the music I want to hear being played. As you will discover, a good night for me takes its time to warm up as it's also important to connect emotionally, but once there, I'll go wherever the energies take me. This will touch on a number of genres, will push some of my boundaries, will include some classics though not a version I could here on the radio. Ideally there should also be something I haven't heard before. The sort of track that makes me catch the DJ's eye whilst mouthing “what the F is this?” He will of course just grin & Ill spend the rest of the next day trying to remember something about it so I can track it down. So this mix is something of a wish list for how Id like my nights to pan out along with a track list that goes like this.... “I studied for a year under Eric Rohmer at The University of Paris-Michelet, and his class was called Cinematography with Eric Rohmer, but we didn't shoot anything. We just watched films, mostly his films, and he would turn the sound off and just talk. It was fantastic. And then we would write papers and discuss. And he talked a lot about his cinematographer Néstor Almendros who shot My Night at Maud's, Pauline at the Beach, Claire's Knee, most of his better-known films.I think the big thing that I got from studying with Rohmer was just his movies are extremely dialogue-heavy, but they're very cinematic. And the way that he would talk about shooting scenes and n a film like My Night at Maud's, that's like largely in one apartment, dialogue spoken between two people, and how to shoot a story that's told through dialogue, but not have it feel like television. And that came in handy later when I did meet Noah Baumbach and Greta Gerwig. Noah's a huge, huge Rohmer fan, so we talked about him a lot. And I think that helped me a lot to have confidence that if a film has a lot of dialogue, for it to feel cinematic and interesting, you don't just need many different angles for the scene to play well. You can kind of show some restraint and even have a scene unfold in one shot and be dynamic, even if people are talking a lot."Sam Levy studied film in Paris with French New Wave director Eric Rohmer and began his career as an apprentice to legendary cinematographer Harris Savides. Sam first gained recognition as a cinematographer when he photographed Wendy and Lucy for director Kelly Reichardt - voted “One of the Best 25 Films of the 21st Century” by The New York Times. He went on to shoot Frances Ha, Mistress America and While We're Young for director Noah Baumbach, Changers and Frank Ocean's Blonded for Spike Jonze, Sermon on The Mount for Jerrod Carmichael, Maggie's Plan for Rebecca Miller and Green Porno for Isabella Rossellini. Sam also photographed Lady Bird for writer/director Greta Gerwig - nominated for 5 Academy Awards including Best Picture and winner of The Golden Globe for Best Picture. La music story du jour c'est celle de Claptone… On a tous besoin d'avoir un Claptone chez soi. Pas parce que ce DJ porte un masque de la peste et qu'il a une voix d'outre-tombe – si vous éprouvez ce besoin, merci de consulter – mais parce que Claptone produit une house music dansante, feel good qu'on aimerait activer quand bon nous semble. Un bouton qui déclencherait par exemple « My Night »
John Bleasdale talks to Lynne Sachs, the Memphis born, Brooklyn based filmmaker on the eve of a season of her works being streamed on the Criterion Channel. Since the 1980s, Sachs has created cinematic works that defy genre through the use of hybrid forms and collaboration, incorporating elements of the essay film, collage, performance, documentary and poetry. Her films explore the intricate relationship between personal observations and broader historical experiences. With each project, she investigates the implicit connection between the body, the camera, and the materiality of film itself. Over her career, Sachs has been awarded support from the Guggenheim Foundation, the NYFA, and Jerome Foundation. Sachs has made 40 films (including Tip of My Tongue, Your Day is My Night, Investigation of a Flame, and Which Way is East). Her films have screened at the Museum of Modern Art, Wexner Center, the Walker, the Getty, New York Film Festival, and Sundance. In 2021, Edison Film Festival and Prismatic Ground Film Festival at Maysles Documentary Center awarded Sachs for her body of work. Sachs is also deeply engaged with poetry. In 2019, Tender Buttons Press published her first book Year by Year Poems. In 2020 and 2021, she taught film and poetry workshops at Beyond Baroque, Flowchart Foundation, San Francisco Public Library, and Hunter. www.lynnesachs.comAfter comprehensive career retrospectives at Sheffield Doc/Fest 2020 and the Museum of the Moving Image in 2021, the Criterion Channel is delighted to announce that director Lynne Sachs' films will join the Channel in October 2021 along with a newly recorded director interview exploring her works. Sachs will be making her the Criterion Channel debut with seven earlier works followed by her latest feature, Film About a Father Who, recently released theatrically by Cinema Guild and receiving its exclusive streaming premiere with the Criterion Channel. As they said in the '90s: Let's talk about sex. It's time for "My Night at Daria's," this week on Morgendorks! When Tom falls asleep at Daria's house it ends up creating a rumor that he and Daria are sleeping together—which leads Daria to feel pressured to actually start sleeping together. But what if you're just not in that mindset? Also, Jake has a sushi parasite. Just a note that Rob's connection was a little wonky throughout recording, so occasionally there's some crosstalk/delay in reactions. Nothing severe, but hey. Kate MacKay is the curator of a retrospective of the Four Seasons cycle of films by the great French New Wave director Eric Rohmer, streaming on the BAM/PFA website through July 28, 2021. She talks about the films and about Berkeley Art Museum/Pacific Film Archive's year during the Covid shutdown with host Richard Wolinsky. Eric Rohmer (1920-2010) was one of the contributors of the magazine Cahiers du Cinema, along with Francois Truffaut and Jean-Luc Godard and was one of the founders of the French New Wave. His success came later than that of his colleagues, finally arriving in 1969 with My Night at Maud's, and continued both commercially and artistically into the 21st Century. The films streaming in this Tales of the Four Seasons cycle, A Tale of Springtime, A Winter's Tale, Summer Tale and A Tale of Autumn were all filmed between 1990 and 1998 when Rohmer was into his seventies. Despite that, the films all feel like the work of a young independent film-maker, and not an old master. Eric Rohmer Wikipedia page. Kate MacKay has been as Associate Curator of Film since 2016, and has programmed several film retrospectives over the course of her career in Berkeley and previously in Toronto. This brilliant and incisive essay by Richard Brody from the New Yorker discusses the four films, and Rohmer. EPISODE 36: FILMSTRUCK'S FRIDAY NIGHT DOUBLE FEATURE - This week Audy is back after taking a break following the Hollywood award season. This episode, he brings on a new cohost cinephile and film noir lover, Andy Wolverton, to come on and review FilmStruck/Criterion Collection Friday Night's Double Features. The first film is the 1970 Arthur Penn directed Night Moves starring Gene Hackman and the second film the French New Wave Eric Rohmer directed film, My Night at Maud's. Starting off with reviewing Night Moves, the 1975 Neo Noir film where Los Angeles private investigator Harry Moseby (Gene Hackman) is hired by a client (Janet Ward) to find her runaway teenage daughter (a young Melanie Griffith in one of her first roles). Moseby tracks the daughter down, only to stumble upon something much more intriguing and sinister. Next, they both go over French New Wave philosophical/romantic exercise of morality My Night of Maud's which is about the rigid principles of a devout Catholic man (Jean Louis Trintignant) are challenged during a one-night stay with Maud (played by a brainy but sultry Françoise Fabian), a divorced woman with an outsize personality. Then they both tie the films together with their segment of film themes, motifs and connections where they break down exactly the cinematic connection both films share. This week's guest: Andy Wolverton Andy Wolverton is a librarian at the Severna Park Community Library in Severna Park, Maryland (part of the Anne Arundel County Public Library system), where he co-hosts The Great Movies series the first Thursday of each month. Andy also writes for The Dark Pages: The Newsletter for Film Noir Lovers as well as his blog, Journeys in Darkness and Light. Andrew quit because his brother wouldn't listen to the podcast. I don't blame either one, not one bit. I don't even listen to it. I just record this shit. https://twitter.com/watchalonepod I talked about a bunch of shit off my Letterboxd. I went on a horror binge. 1) The Devil's Candy - 2015 Netflix horror - had promise, but squandered it. I would watch another of this guy's films. I don't recommend it. 2) From a House on Willow Street - don't watch this trash 3) Creep - 2014 documentary-style flick about a cat and mouse game between a beta male and his bizarre gig employer. Moral of the story - get a career, not a gig where you can get stalked for sport. I recommend it. 4) Hush - 2016 survival horror flick about a deafmute trying to survive a bored murderer's attempts to kill her in her cabin. I really recommend it. 5) Our Mother's House - 1967, lovely pairing to Mary Poppins about kids who descend into religious mania and powermongering when their mother dies and they fear being sent to the orphanage, as well they should: kids get raped and sold by the state there. Need I say I recommend it? 6) The Transfiguration - 2016 vampire film about an autistic serial killer living in the projects; I liked most of it. Lot of uncomfortable, tense moments that drag you through the mind of a killer. I would recommend it. 7) Ingrid Goes West - 2017 stalker film about a social media retard; I liked it. I'd definitely recommend it. 8) Austeria - beautiful, eventime-lit 1982 war film about a Polish Jewish pogrom in 1918 and the interesting mystical antics of a batch of Hasids who dance their way to doom during it. Great movie. 9) My Night at Maud's - beautiful love story about the damning power of faith and humanist love. Five stars on my Letterboxd. I definitely recommend.
