Movie Meltdown - Episode 605 This episode we're coming to you “live” from WonderFest as we're joined by our guest co-host Bill, who among many things is a “Land of the Lost” aficionado. Plus we also talk with one of the stars of “Land of the Lost” - Wesley Eure. And in addition to discussing running from dinosaurs, we also go into some of his movies like “The Toolbox Murders”, “Jennifer” and “C.H.O.M.P.S.”. Not to mention a special guest appearance from Holly herself - Kathy Coleman! And while we cover the potential disadvantages of wearing a pith helmet, we also delve into… Star Trek, Riverdale, The Orville, Idiocracy, Don't Look Up, G.I. Joe, board games, Days of Our Lives, we all sat on a dinosaur, Psycho Goreman, NBA players, Dinah Shore, melding film and video tape, buying way too many toys, starting your own cult, becoming a cowboy, The Tempest, it took me about two weeks to get out of the character, Star Wars, the boa was so big, a William Castle experience, you forgot to mention that Frankenstein had a cape, moon spinners or a periscope, being at the drive-in, every day for nine months, Carrie with snakes, expensive spaghetti, crushing on Valerie Bertinelli, Mississippi, hobo booze, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, reruns, struggles and strifes, Luke Perry, collecting toys, so the cast hated me, Tales from the Crypt, playing an oak tree, the dialect of the immigrants, they called the Disney people in, robot dogs and Crocs are the end of days. “I had one scene where I had snakes wrapped around my head.” For more on WonderFest, go to: https://wonderfest.com/
Hop in a yellow raft and hold on tight, because we're going over the waterfall and into the Land of The Lost with Will Marshall himself, Wesley Eure! More goofy Halloween fun this week, as we flip through the book An Old School Halloween and learn about the costumes of Ben Cooper Inc. This was the company that sold those quick simple Halloween costumes (a cheap plastic mask and vinyl smock) at discount department stores for decades. We discuss the odd history of Ben Cooper's Spider-Man costume, why Yoda was blue, how Fonzie's catchphrase was bungled, why Scooby Doo looked like Scrappy Doo, and the awesomeness of the Sleestak costume. Also: Another new Halloween book called Full Moon, written by friends of Kornflake; scary 1970s Halloween stories from Power Records; Matt's Count Chocula review; a concert report on folk rock musician (and camping enthusiast) Brett Dennen; the spooky return of our sister podcast But First, Let's Talk Nerdy; and Happy Birthday to Annie Potts, star of every Ghostbusters movie. The concept of Cult and Culture began as a short segment created by Justin Pearson, an internationally known musician, record label owner (Three One G Records), author, and actor. He is best known as bassist/vocalist for bands such as Dead Cross, The Locust, and Retox. Justin has come to know and work with a broad spectrum of captivating personalities and brilliant minds, many of which are key figures in the realm of popular culture and cult followings alike. John Waters was one of the first people interviewed for the project- an icon of both cult and culture. Other guests include a broad scope of musicians, producers, authors, and anyone passionate about what they do. In its infancy, segments were shorter, 10-20 minutes, and would be recorded while on tour. Since then, Pearson has collaborated with producer and musician Luke Henshaw (Planet B, Sonido de la Frontera) to build the idea into a proper podcast, now recorded at Penguin Studios in San Diego. The focus is not intended to be solely on people in any one realm, and because guests are friends and family, the conversations are frank, informal, well-informed and genuine. Episode 15 features W.T. Nelson. This fascinating artist and sound scientist has been a part of such noise/experimental/power violence projects such as Bastard Noise, Man is the Bastard, Sleestak, Geronimo, and others, as well as being founder of Trogotronic audio instruments, hand built in California. This episode offers a glimpse into the inventive, ever-curious mind of Nelson, that which inspires him sonically (including flutes), polarizing music (like Steely Dan and GG Allin), and the processes, thinking behind, and future of some of his creations.

Kevin and the Mayor of Chickentown are back from Atlanta with a full report on DragonCon, where they joined all the masked and vaccinated nerds for a long silly Labor Day weekend. They had a busy schedule of panels, presentations, and events, and our discussion includes: The Suicide Squad, Smallville, Doctor Who, Pennyworth, DragonCon mead, Saturday Morning Live Roll-a-Panel, Classic Sci-Fi Court, burrito detectors, Fargo, John Scalzi, Louis Gossett Jr., Howard the Duck ribbons, The Geek Girls Run, A Discovery of Witches, The Justice Society of America, the Battle of the Fictional Bands, pizza pie with Kate from Strange Animals Podcast, Kevin's Digital Media panel mishap, and a million Loki variants everywhere you look. But the highlight for us was spending time onstage and offstage with Land of the Lost's original Will and Holly, Wesley Eure and Kathleen Coleman. (And an actual Sleestak too!) Hopefully the world will be less horrifying in time for DragonCon 2022, but meanwhile the geeks figured out how to make it work. DragonCon, our very favorite annual gathering of the geeks, was a virtual-only event last year. But this year we're creeping back down to Atlanta and doing it for real! It'll be (mostly) business as usual: five days of nonstop panels, concerts, gaming, costumes, and all manner of nerdy fun. Celebrity guests include actors from Doctor Who, Star Trek, Smallville, Batwoman, Pinky and the Brain, Superman and Lois, and (our favorite) Land of the Lost. Safety protocols are in place, so if you're masked, vaccinated, and know how to play well with others, come on down. Kevin will be busy again this year with lots of silly panels and presentations, and we run through his whole schedule. (Warning: Since this episode was recorded, that schedule has already changed. Check our social media posts for the corrected version.) And we have new Flopcast badge ribbons for you too! (Also on this week's episode: Television of 1986, the Watch-A-Thon of Rassilon, and Barry Gibb's beard.) See you at DragonCon! Beware of Sleestak. And, you know, everything else. Fresh off the release of his new film Beast Mode with C Thomas Howell, James Duval joins us this week as our celebrity guest judge to determine who takes this "week" experience! James has been in some great movies over the years like Independence Day, Gone in Sixty Seconds, May, SLC Punk, The Doom Generation; the list goes on and on. Nicest guy in the world and he shows up with the huge creepy bunny head from his character Frank in Donnie Darko to help make sure there is no malfeasance with his selections! What a strategy! The first contestant this week, Joe Findlay is back and he brought along the best first week he could find in December 1986 for the journey. Marc James travels back in time to two years before he was born to research the merits of December 1976. And finally, Mancrush is trying to get his game back on track after a few crushing defeats, but will the hand he is dealt from December 1996 be enough? So much fun conversation with James this week! After the show ended, the conversation didn't! So James might be back sooner than later. But in this particular episode, you may hear something about ninja fetish, Amy Brenneman defeats electricity, Tommy Lee Jones thinks he's Erik Estrada, the magic of movies, Sinbad wasn't a genie, Captain Steven Hiller perishes and brings a franchise down with him, a movie that sounds like it's about prostitutes, James dad brought him to strange flicks as a child, Mancrush's Dad needs to check his email, Sleestak is for the children, AAAAAY sit on it, a competitor emerges but did anyone buy it, Mancrush dials up an expert for his take, an odorous music selection leaves a bad taste in your mouth, the ultimate reason to fight, boring politics, a landmark ruling, flying swine, life feels like a sci-fi movie, Beast Mode's connection to Bernie Lomax, break out the paddles and slap some balls, Jimmy's new projects, and just what is it like to work with Randy Quaid?? And while we admit to ourselves that we all kind of want to move into an old funeral home, we also cover… Creepypasta, tidy demons, Joshua Tree, urban legends, weird symbols, amazing cell phone service, folklore, I don’t know… fives, the Zero candy bar, multiple Joe Pescis, a funny-looking little guy, doppelgänger, being a wet blanket, creepy glowing eyes, alien Sleestak, given what you can see what the creature or the monster... can and can’t do - it always seems like web design is always outside of it’s wheelhouse, rumored witch, an advertisement for tequila, a demon-thing, making a Jackass movie, dead parents, maybe a cult, a Bic lighter, Hisji, who put coconut in this, born of the internet, it is just gorgeous, I think I unleashed this crazy internet curse, multiple suicides, peanut butter kisses and candy corn, goat man, living in a trailer and which of these characters do I want to die? Spoiler Alert: Full spoilers for "Head Count"... so go watch it before you listen. “Most adults are still like… what? I’ve never eaten Creepypasta… how do you make it?”

So we're talking Star Trek (and DragonCon's Trek Track), our adventures as DragonCon Newbie Walking Tour guides, rolling giant dice with the American Sci-Fi Classics Track, and being trapped in Rhode Island for DragonCon weekend. Joining Kevin on the panel were filmmaker Kevin Cafferty, Andy Hicks (of the Coal Hill A/V Club podcast), and Karen (of the Foxes in the Hen House podcast)! Among the topics discussed: The Superfriends, Pee Wee's Playhouse, ALF, Captain Bob, Weird Al, Josie and the Pussycats, The Brady Kids, School House Rock, Time for Timer, Gilligan's Planet, Mr. T, Thundarr the Barbarian, Turbo Teen, Kidd Video, Cadillacs and Dinosaurs, Garfield and Friends, Galaxy High, Hanna Barbera, Filmation, Sid and Marty Krofft, the Friday night preview specials, the Saturday morning TV comic book ads, the continuity errors of Tom and Jerry, the horrors of candlepin bowling, and the eternal curse of Scrappy Doo. And folks, that is not a complete list. Not even close. Listen carefully, and you'll hear Kornflake and the Mayor of Chickentown in the audience too. (Warning: One of them may have been wearing a rubber chicken costume.) This was a crazy fun time, and this is why you all need to hitchhike to Boston and join us at Arisia next year. And that's one to grow on.
WE MADE IT BABIES ! Ten episodes in! We have no idea what that means, other than it's probably the most invested Jeremy has been in anything since forever. This episode is a lovely foray in to the pros and cons of lizard people versus mole people. Other topics include : Kimchi juice, Dave the Sleestak, getting eaten butt first, Peanuts on peanuts, Jesus Chrysler, and peeing Mercury.

More Bad Apples - 40th Anniversary Season 1 Episode 11 Truly, the January 30, 1976 episode of The Donny and Marie Show is amjam-packed and overstuffed episode. It is filled with good stuff, bad stuff and some really unexplainable stuff. This episode is so jam-packed and overstuffed, it includes a cameo appearance by none other than a Sleestak from LAND OF THE LOST. The good stuff includes some good music (Marie singing "I Cant Stop Loving You"; Donny singing "Rock Around The Clock"; Jimmy Osmond singing…whatever (we here at MORE BAD APPLES love Jimmy and he can sing whatever he wants, we will listen)); two (count 'em, two) separate occasions for Bob Hope to get off some of his jokes (which are so bad they are funny). The bad stuff includes too much Ted Knight singing; Marie singing that old chestnut "Feelings" which is a terrible, terrible song and would defeat any singer); some unfortunate comedy material for Donny & Marie. The unexplainable stuff includes too much Ted Knight singing; an incredibly surreal segment of the Ice Capade chicks ice skating with a basketball theme intercut with a montage of the Globetrotters playing basketball and it is all set to some incredibly funky song we here at MORE BAD APPLES don't know (but maybe our listeners will know); an uncomfortable segment where Ted Knight spends the segment hitting on Marie. Join us this week as we delve into one of the more enjoyable episodes of The Donny & Marie Show.

Interview Starts 36:00 Chris Kehler is an alternative holistic healer. We chat about energy medicine, sacred geometric tools used in this type of healing, and radionic health. He uses a unique system of dowsing to pinpoint the root cause and then utilizes krystaline energy tools to neutralize the problem. We end up trying a live energy healing on the podcast. We talk about how Chris got involve in this and the changes people go through during and after a so called spiritual awakening. There seems to be an energetic signature of lucifer and a parasite problem at the core of a lot of peoples issues and of course we touch on positive thinking, frequency and a variety of esoteric topics. http://www.chriskehler.net/ http://www.pyramidonenetwork.com/ Red Pill Junkie joins us for the intro and we read a listener email about ancient archaeological sites and whether or not the Bosnian Pyramids are natural. David Gerrold is an American science fiction screenwriter and novelist known for his script for the popular original Star Trek episode "The Trouble With Tribbles", for creating the Sleestak race on the TV series Land of the Lost, and for his novelette The Martian Child, which won both Hugo and Nebula awards, and was adapted into a 2007 film starring John Cusack. He wrote episodes of original series' and animated series', and also worked as a story editor on Star Trek: The Next Generation. He left near the end of that series' first season in a dispute with Gene Roddenberry. Gerrold wrote the scripts for the original series' "The Trouble with Tribbles" and its sequel, the animated series' "More Tribbles, More Troubles", as well as The Animated Series episode "Bem". The first of these was nominated for a Hugo Award in the category "Best Dramatic Presentation", which he shared with Joseph Pevney. He provided the story, along with Oliver Crawford, for TOS: "The Cloud Minders". He also provided an uncredited rewrite of the final draft of the script for TOS: "I, Mudd". Join David and host Marc B. Lee for an enchanting evening.
Kevin and the Mayor are back in Chickentown with a full report on the craziest convention of the year: DragonCon! Featuring: Land of the Lost's Will, Holly, Chaka, and a Sleestak; Nestor the Long-Eared Christmas Donkey; the Karate Kid and Ponyboy Curtis; Match Game in the 25th Century; Mystery Science Theater 3000's Joel, Trace, Frank, and a photobombing Tom Servo; concerts by Molly Lewis, Mikey Mason, and Anaria; way more chicken-themed costumes than you'd expect; and yes, a Weird Al Dalek. 'Twas a long, strange weekend -- hopefully we'll readjust to reality (and catch up on our sleep) just in time for DragonCon 2015. Meanwhile, Kornflake prepares for National Play-Doh Day, which suddenly seems quite reasonable and mature.
This week we're joined by the Mayor of Chickentown to discuss our weekend at CONvergence in Bloomington, Minnesota! A few thousand of our fellow geeks (including our friends from Skepchick and Mad Art Lab) gathered there for four days of science and silliness. Kevin appeared on a few nerdy comic book-themed panels, while the Mayor participated in a Doctor Who improv game show (which also included author Paul Cornell and comedian Joseph Scrimshaw, so you know, no pressure). We also found mermaids in the hotel pool, ran into a Starfleet-uniformed Sleestak, learned way too much about Rebecca Watson's cats, and discovered that yes, the floor is lava. Meanwhile back in Chickentown: Kornflake is celebrating Hammock Day (which involves a lot of frantic, intense relaxing), and our latest concert report will have you dancing on the ceiling with your favorite clay head. Hello.
Kevin has a startling Sleestak correction; Kornflake has a startling book about lobsters; we report on concerts featuring The Monkees, Freezepop, and The Somerville Ukulele Club; our tales of getting lost in Chinatown include junior high kids loaded with fireworks, and the search for a lifetime supply of fortune cookies; and our "Chickens in the News" segment has us staring right into those creepy chicken eyes. Also: We're using Skype this week, which has Kornflake (and her dog!) dancing on the ceiling through the whole show.
Here's an odd little show for you -- Kornflake suggested a Top 4 1/2 List of hairdos! Of course this means a trip back to the 70s and 80s (not exactly unfamiliar territory for The Flopcast), when hair was big and/or crazy, and threatened to destroy us all. We'll look at New wave singers, cartoon bears, Mr. T (but of course)... and the horrifying hair history of the Brady family. We also turn to Siri for some answers, and learn that some robots just can't take a compliment.
Kevin is back from Atlanta with a full report on DragonCon, featuring 50,000 nerds and/or geeks, the Bionic Man and Woman, High Feather cosplayers, booze-serving robots, Canadian teen pop star Robin Sparkles, the Flying Spaghetti Monster, Shatner, a steampunk owl catcher, Hulk cologne, and yes, Charles Nelson Reilly. Kind of a strange weekend, in retrospect. We also get in some music talk, and recommend George Hrab, Sufjan Stevens, and 80s-style arena rock. (Admit it, you love REO Speedwagon.) And Kornflake reminds us to remind her about Talk Like a Pirate Day. But we won't.
