Clean energy technologies saw a record influx of investment last year: $1.7 trillion in total. But that still falls short of what's needed to meet climate goals. With venture capital investment now falling, it's increasingly difficult for startups to gain traction. Claire Curry, global head of technology, industry & innovation at BloombergNEF, follows the journeys of many young companies in the clean-tech space. On this week's Zero, Curry tells Akshat Rathi about the kinds of innovative pathways that have proven successful. LanzaTech, for example, a nine-year-old carbon recycling technology company, works with Chinese steel companies looking for low-emissions solutions. H2 Green Steel also scaled quickly, in part through agreements reached with Mercedes Benz, IKEA and other big brands looking to access low-carbon steel. Curry explains how these approaches could be replicated by other startups. Listen to Zero's episode about green-iron startup Electra. Listen to Switched On's episodes on clean-energy investments and plastic recycling. Zero is a production of Bloomberg Green. Our producers are Mythili Rao, Magnus Henriksson, and Sommer Saadi. The start of each year sees BloombergNEF look at what could play out across the energy transition over the next 12 months. During January, Switched On will interview the brains behind the ‘Things to Watch' series, starting with what to expect from the electric vehicle market. On today's episode, Dana sits down with Colin McKerracher, BNEF's Head of Advanced Transport. Together, they discuss the race between Tesla and BYD to claim the global EV sales crown, the new opportunities presented by emerging markets, and whether 2024 could be the year that oil demand sees a real dent from the shift to electric drivetrains. Complementary BNEF research on the trends driving the transition to a lower-carbon economy can be found at BNEF on the Bloomberg Terminal, on bnef.com or on the BNEF mobile app. Links to research notes from this episode: EVs and Clean Transport: 10 Things to Watch in 2024 - https://www.bnef.com/insights/33099See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Today's Song of the Day is "Trago Coqueto" from Pachyman's album, Switched-On, out now.
Pachyman aka Pachy Garcia embodies the modern dub and reggae vibes in a very uplifting and addicting way! We're proud to bring you this brand new episode of Maker's Mark presenta Pili, Raul & La Musica en Vivo. Recorded in front of a live audience at the beautiful Gibson Showroom in Hollywood, the night oozed with positive and vibrant energy courtesy of Pachy's story and outlook on making the music that is near and dear to his heart and ours! His new album Switched On is a beautiful representation and the perfect companion to this lovely conversation with the Puerto Rican born, LA based musician where we talk about everything from his humble beginnings and love for the genre to his idea of the supergroup. Sit back, pour yourself a Maker's Mark and enjoy!
Pachyman is a one-man dub band; that one man is Pachy Garcia, and though he's based in LA, he grew up in Puerto Rico, at a time when Jamaican music – especially dub reggae - was having a big impact on the island's music scene. Pachyman's new album is called Switched On, and is an homage to the era when musicians first began manipulating synthesizers to emit gloriously off-kilter bleeps, bloops, and whooshes - think Switched On Boleros and Switched On Bach. The new record brings Pachy and his dub-drenched sound system from another dimension to our studio. Switched-On by PACHYMAN

Pachyman - "Trago Coqueto," a 2023 single on ATO Records L.A.-based artist Pachy García — who records as Pachyman — reflects on his homeland of Puerto Rico on today's Song of the Day. “It's like a stream of consciousness,” he tells Remezcla. “I wanted to play with the idea of being a bartender, the profession of getting people drunk, and my constant dilemma about returning home – which I am still not ready to do. It's about grappling with the emotions of my daily life in a casual yet poetic manner.” You can find the track on his new LP, Switched-On, which comes out tomorrow, Friday, September 29th, via ATO Records. The album is a dub-filled delight, and was even recorded on the same model of mixing board that Lee “Scratch” Perry used in his Kingston studio. The Moog synthesizer ‘bent the course of music forever' Rolling Stone declared. Bob Moog, the man who did that bending, was a lovable geek with Einstein hair and pocket protectors. He walked into history in 1964 when his homemade contraption unexpectedly became a sensation---suddenly everyone wanted a Moog. The Beatles, The Doors, The Byrds, and Stevie Wonder discovered his synthesizer, and it came to be featured in seminal film scores including Apocalypse Now and A Clockwork Orange. The Moog's game-changing sounds saturated 60's counterculture and burst into the disco party in the 70's to set off the electronic dance music movement. Bob had singlehandedly founded the synth industry and become a star in the process. But he was also going broke. Imitators copied his technology, the musicians' union accused him of replacing live players, and Japanese competitors started overtaking his work. He struggled to hang on to his inventions, his business, and his very name. Bob's story upends our notions of success and wealth, showing that the two don't always go together. In Switched On: Bob Moog and the Synthesizer Revolution (Oxford UP, 2022), author Albert Glinsky draws on exclusive access to Bob Moog's personal archives and his probing interviews with Bob's family and a multitude of associates, for this first complete biography of the man and his work. Solar has a critical role to play in decarbonizing the global energy system. It also has the potential to reduce power price volatility by increasing domestically produced energy supply in some parts of the world. In 2022, BloombergNEF expects to see yet another record year of solar build. This is all the while the cost of components, materials and projects remains elevated. In today's episode of Switched On, Dana Perkins speaks with Jenny Chase, head of solar at BNEF, about what is happening in the solar industry today and what she expects to see going forward. This podcast draws upon research found in the BNEF 3Q 2022 Global PV Market Outlook, which can be found at BNEF on the Bloomberg Terminal, at bnef.com, or via our mobile app.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Batteries for electric vehicles and stationary storage are increasingly in demand. But while ever-cheaper batteries were expected only a couple of years ago, supply turbulence for the key metals needed has increased prices in 2022 and made future costs uncertain. Depending on the chemistry selected, battery metals can make up 60-80% of a battery's total cost. Alongside human rights concerns, metals prices have led battery manufacturers to take a closer look at their chemistries. In today's episode of Switched On, we speak with Kwasi Ampofo, head of metals and mining at BNEF, about the outlook for battery metals – specifically, lithium, nickel, cobalt, manganese, and graphite. This episode draws upon the research found in BNEF's 1H 2022 Battery Metals Outlook: Supply Turbulence Ahead, which can be found at BNEF on the Bloomberg Terminal, at bnef.com, or via our mobile app.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Let Season 4 begin! We pick up our timeline of the BBC origin story in February 1923 - and the launch of Cardiff 5WA, the first Welsh broadcast station. Plus back in 2022: places you can go, museums, exhibitions and the like - from Bradford's National Science and Media Museum (and their Switched On exhibition) to St Bride's in London (and their A Kingdom of Cardboard exhibition). We chat to Lewis Pollard, curator of broadcasting at the first, and Bob Richardson, ex of BBC Presentation and Exhibitions departments, who's put together the latter. They're great chats - and great exhibitions. Details on the links below. Back in Wales, in the past, you'll hear some of the speeches delivered on launch night, from John Reith, Lord Gainford, Sir William Noble and the Lord Mayor of Cardiff. Fancy! Thanks Andrew Barker for sourcing the text, from newspapers of the day. We'll post the full text of the speeches on our Facebook group - again, link below. James and I went down to sunny (sweaty) Orlando for Microsoft Power Platform Conference (MPPC) 2022. Apart from getting to see a great set of announcements, learn a ton, and meet up with past pod-friends we also got the chance to sit down and have a conversation with Charles Lamanna — hot on the heels of his keynote address. Join us for this Very Special Episode of Switched On, our chance to share Charles' deeper thoughts on MPPC 2022 announcements. First, our own quick thoughts on MPPC 2022:James loved the enthusiasm. “Our industry is about to be turned upside-down.”I had big love for the announced collaborative editing feature in Power Apps, with coauthoring. Fusion teams are even more equipped now. Then — in an effort to avoid falling into a nerd black hole of our own excitement — we jump to the live-on-the-scene interview with Charles. IT. WAS. SO. AWESOME. Here is a sprinkling of his wisdom. HighlightsCharles loves the real-time coauthoring experience, same as me. Customers often have big development teams working on the same app — now think of it as the current Word or Excel. Your colleagues are there with you, making cool things happen quickly.Power Platform as a low-code platform is interesting in its comprehensiveness. Don't forget that you're doing a lot more than just Power Apps.James notes the Azure backdrop for Power Platform as a game-changer: “substrate”.There are “no cliffs” — there's always an escape hatch to go one layer deeper on customizing and powering up apps. You can always drop into a deeper layer of code or functionality.Charles LamannaApproximately 25% of Power Platform users are professional developers, and they often collaborate with non-pro devs.Fusion teams, CoEs, etc — those are functionally customer innovations on top of the delivered platform.7.4 million Power Platform developers. It's only just beginning.Low-code development platforms in 3 years: 3 trends. Data [there's a massive amount of data from every system, it's not easy to put it all together → data poor to data rich, connectors], AI [from big data to big AI, “there will be more UI built for AI than for humans”], collaboration [all this great stuff is happening in tech — it's still all about the people using it].AI is leaking into Power Platform in ways where you don't see or know it. It's just there, powering things. We talk about humans collaborating, in the future it'll be humans and AIs collaborating.Charles: serverless is the now-future.Fun fact: Logic Apps come from an internal hackathon project at Microsoft called Wolfkrow (“workflow” backwards)Money QuotesCharlesThat's the amazing thing about platforms: you build it, and your mind is always blown by what people are able to do with it.Power Platform has definitely entered the ‘flywheel is a blur' stage…every quarter there's a game-changing experience. [nod to Jim Collins]I remember in 2013 what it felt like for public cloud. It feels exactly the same way for low-code in 2022.Technology is what enables the feature, technology is not the feature.JamesBecause it's getting to a certain level of maturity it's like…how far can we take this? The answer is: pretty far.PaulMPPC 2023: Field of Dreams
In the years following the Fukushima nuclear disaster of 2011, the conversation around decarbonizing the energy sector moved away from nuclear. However, current commodity price volatility has brought nuclear back to the fore and countries that were previously focused on decommissioning nuclear power stations are now, once again, discussing its virtues. Will this spur a nuclear renaissance and how might this time be different from the 1960s and 1970s? What technology breakthroughs could make the future of nuclear different, and will they happen quickly enough to respond to current market signals? To address these questions and more, Dana Perkins speaks with Chris Gadomski, lead nuclear analyst at BloombergNEF. This episode of Switched On draws upon a BNEF research note titled, Nuclear 1H 2022 Market Outlook: Unprecedented Opportunity. To access this research, BNEF subscribers can find it at BNEF on the Bloomberg Terminal, at bnef.com or via our mobile app.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Fit for 55 is designed to support the European Union's pledge to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 55% by 2030 when compared with 1990 levels. To aid in achieving this goal, there are several changes proposed to the European Union Emissions Trading System (EU ETS). In today's episode of Switched On, we speak with Bo Qin and Emma Coker, who focus on carbon markets for BNEF. They outline these changes and their impact on the EU ETS. This episode was based on two BloombergNEF research notes: How ‘Fit for 55' Would Reform the European Carbon Market, as well as Reforms and Offsets Front and Center for EU Carbon Players. James and I interviewed each other to tee up our third season. Our theory: IT can't keep up with the business. Our question: why? Lots of things floating around. Ideas. Half-formed questions. Where does it go wrong in meeting up with the business?Fusion/multi-disciplinary teams that focus on the business with shades of tech and biz skills are the ideal mix. We think. Is centralized IT itself part of the problem? So much tooling in any job these days requires general computing skills, that the business is gaining tech skill faster than IT is gaining business skillSeveral super-interesting guests and stories this season:A startup (hardware AND software) in warehouse SaaSA VP of IT at a mid-sizeLogistics wizard…and more!Money QuotesJamesIt's kind of the elephant in the room at so many customers, and Bowdark too.The hard work is figuring out what the business needs.PaulThe business appears to have its needs move faster than IT can move to sweep the list clean. Is it the right time for there to be Accounting IT and HR IT, only beholden to themselves for choices in processes and tools? In this episode, we are talking about how many parents are struggling with the changes we are seeing in our children's education. Whilst there is still a “preferred path” proposed by our education system … more and more parents are finding that this model might not be best supporting their child's temperaments, interests, and needs. Is the educations system fit for purpose? And if not - how can our parents support our children better? We talk about modeling the “right” behavior - because let's face it - our kids learn through observation rather than being preached at!
