Holly Campbell gave birth to her son, Jake in 2007. At just two and a half months old, Jake suddenly stopped breathing and was rushed to the hospital. The following day, Holly and her husband were told the devastating news that their baby was not going to survive. In their grief, they wanted to give their son a legacy and help others, so the selfless decision to donate Jake's heart was made. During this same time period and nearly 1,000 miles away, Kim Scadlock gave birth to her son, Beckham. Beckham seemed healthy at birth, but soon medical staff discovered he was struggling to breathe. After tests were done, Kim and her husband were told Beckham's only chance to survive was to receive a heart transplant. Thankfully, Jake's heart was a match for Beckham and the transplant took place. Afterward, while both families were in the process of grieving and healing, they thought of each other often, although they did not know each other's identity. Through the organ donor networks, the families were eventually able to contact each other and in 2010, Holly, Kim and their families met for the very first time at the Transplant Games in Wisconsin. Thirteen years later in 2023, Holly and Kim were invited to performed the song “For Good” from the musical, “Wicked” on the popular television show, America's Got Talent. “For Good” has a special meaning for Holly as it was the last song she was able to sing to Jake before he passed and also special for Kim, as it was the first song she sang to Beckham after he received his new heart. In this episode of Your History Your Story, Holly and Kim will share their story of love, friendship and the importance of life saving organ donation. Carly Kelly was born with autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease, a disease that not only affects the kidneys, but also can lead to liver problems. She spent the first month of her life in the Neonatal ICU at Mayo Clinic, where physicians told Carly's family she would eventually need a kidney transplant. "I was the first one to register as a donor," says Tim Kelly, Carly's father. "And I was so blessed to be a match. Carly and I have the exact same blood type: AB negative. There are so many people out there that are waiting for kidney and other organs. It is such a long waitlist, and to be able to give my daughter a kidney right off the bat was so fortunate for both of us."At age 8, Carly had her first organ transplant, receiving a kidney from her father. In 2019, Carly went into liver failure she received a liver transplant on May 2, 2019. 10 months later, Carly received her second kidney transplant. All three transplants have taken place at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Now 27 years old, Carly is doing well and hasn't let her transplants slow her down. She and her father will compete in the 2022 Transplant Games of America, which will take place July 29-Aug. 3 in San Diego. The games are open to transplant recipients, living donors and donor families in different categories.Carly and Tim will be part of Team MN-DAK, which is sponsored by LifeSource. This will be their third time competing in the games, taking part in cycling, pickleball and cornhole. They've been preparing together for the event."Every day, we'll bike, or we'll go for a walk, or we'll play pickleball or we'll throw some bags," says Carly. "Being together and preparing, it's something just my dad and I do, which is really cool. It's not really about competing. It's more about honoring your donor." There are nearly 106,000 people in the U.S. waiting for a lifesaving organ transplant. Tim and Carly both say that competing in the games is not only about honoring the donors, but also raising awareness. "Please registered to be a donor," implores Tim. "One person can save up to eight lives. And it's easy thing to do. Carly wouldn't be here without multiple donors." To register to be a donor, visit the Donate Life America website. On the Mayo Clinic Q&A podcast, Carly and Tim Kelly share their story.

In most cases, when someone steps forward as a living donor, nobody actually asks them to donate a kidney.  Usually, the donor hears the story of someone needing a kidney and makes the decision to donate without being asked.  The Living Kidney Donors Network (LKDN) is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization established in 2007 by Harvey Mysel whose primary mission is to educate people in need of a kidney transplant about living kidney donation and help them communicate their need to family members and friends. LKDN also has a program that educates the public about the need for living kidney donors.Harvey is a 2-time kidney transplant recipient. After proactively managing an inherited kidney condition, PKD (Polycystic Kidney Disease) for over 20 years he had his first kidney transplant in February 2007. He was fortunate that his wife Amy was a compatible donor. Harvey contracted a virus, (BK Virus,) 2 years after his transplant and after years of battling this virus, in August 2012 he had his second kidney transplant. Harvey and his donor, Stephen Liegghio, who was introduced to Harvey by an advocate, were involved in a 3-way kidney paired exchange. Most kidney donors donate to someone they know and patients need to first have the knowledge about living kidney transplants and learn how to develop their kidney campaign so they could be effective in communicating their need. The FREE online program Having Your Donor Find YOU! does just that. In addition to the work he does at the LKDN, Harvey is a tri-athlete, competing in a triathlon 5 months after his first transplant. He is a 3-time Gold Medal winner and Silver medalist in the Transplant Games. Harvey is an accomplished bicycle rider, tennis player, platform tennis player, bowler, hiker and rock climber.Episode LinksDonor DiariesLiving Kidney Donors NetworkNorthwestern Kidney Champion ProgramNational Kidney Donor OrganizationJohns Hopkins COVID/kidney Recipient Study

Tragically losing her father to suicide when she was nine years old, Nancy and her family were comforted by the kindness of their extended family and neighbors. It was this kindness that inspired her to help and care for others her entire life. Nancy's daughter, Janet, will tell how her mother opened not only her heart, but her home to others, especially those who were lonely or in need. The apple didn't fall far from the tree. Janet, like her mother, feels the same passion to step up in many ways, including donating one of her kidneys to a friend. Since donating her kidney, she has been actively involved with an organization called the Transplant Games of America and participates as an athlete. In 1978, the first international sporting event was held for athletes who'd undergone organ transplants. The brainchild of a British surgeon called Dr Maurice Slapak, the Transplant Games aimed to convince the public that patients could go on to live active lives. Caroline Heywood talks to Dr Slapak and to John Murray, who took part in the Games after a successful kidney transplant. The programme is a Made-In-Manchester Production. Corine Remande is now blind in her right eye after being hit by a wayward golf ball struck by America’s Brooks Koepka during last weekend’s Ryder Cup. Remande says she could have died on the golf course and says she is taking legal action to improve safety for spectators. But how does Brooks Koepka feel? One golfer who knows is James Gordon – a Scotsman who, over 10 years ago, hit a wayward ball that caused another man to lose his eye. James tells Sportshour how the accident stopped him from playing golf for over half a year and how he couldn’t bring himself to speak to the man he had injured because he didn’t know what to say. James also believes golfers should take out insurance to protect them on the golf course. Nearly 10 years ago, American runner Denise Sauriol was hit by a car on her way to start a half marathon. Her body smashed into the windscreen, causing her to break five vertebrae in her back. Denise says the accident changed her life, leading to the birth of ‘Denise 2.0, and she’s set to run her 100th 26.2 mile race as she competes in the Chicago Marathon. Arsene Wenger is one of the most respected football managers in the world, having led Arsenal football club for a staggering 22 years. He’s famous for winning three Premier League titles and seven FA Cups, his ridiculously long coats and his frustratingly long struggles with zips. But what was perhaps most iconic about the Frenchman was his extraordinary quotes that left journalists with more questions than answers. And now the legacy of those words lives on in the form of Japanese Haiku poems, as written by author Gunnar Sorrars – who tells us some of his most bizarre Wenger Haikus. Rugby league side Toronto Wolfpack play London Broncos with promotion up for grabs for the winner on Sunday. We hear from Toronto super fan Steve Marsden, who makes 500-mile round trips to watch his beloved team every week – and even flew to the United Kingdom to see Toronto play Salford Devils in Manchester. Britain’s greatest ever female skier Chemmy Alcott reveals why she is going to store her baby’s stem cells after she has given birth to her second child. Chemmy discusses the benefits of storing stem cells in case of future injuries or illnesses and offers advice on how to athletes can stay fit and healthy during pregnancy. US Paralympic alpine skier Danelle Umstead ‘lived her impossible’ this year by becoming the first blind contestant on America’s Dancing with the Stars show. Danelle tells Sportshour how she once told the TV she would make history by appearing on the series and reveals why dancing was a lot harder and more nerve-wracking than competing in the Winter Paralympics. Former Australia rugby international Rob Horne was paralysed in his right arm following a heavy tackle whilst playing for Northampton Saints in April this year. Ahead of a special tribute match between Northampton and Leicester Tigers at Twickenham, from which the proceeds will go to Rob and his family, he describes the moment he realised the extent of his injury, what it was like to be forced into retirement so early and how he’s determined to move on with his life. And in this week’s Sporting Witness, we're taking you back to 1978 and a new type of athletics event which would go on to become internationally successful. Caroline Heywood has been speaking to Dr Maurice Slapak about his memories of the first ever TRANSPLANT Games. Photo: Corine Remande (Getty Images)

Allison Sklarew is an American teenager and high school student who lives with her family in Maryland, right outside Washington, DC. Unlike many prominent guests in this podcast series, she does not have an impressive professional resume, but it is easy to suspect that that part of her life will change over time. For now, she is similar to millions of other youngsters in the United States, except for some important details. First, as a toddler she underwent heart transplant surgery. Secondly, she has made a presentation to a group of experts at the National Institutes of Health and testified before the Maryland State Legislature. Another way in which she stands out in contrast to individuals her own age and also to a great many adults is that she has an enormous amount of experience as a recipient of health care services, which include taking various medications and undergoing sophisticated diagnostics, such as electrocardiograms and biopsy catheterizations. Many love songs contain lyrics along lines of “my heart belongs to someone else.” In her case, it is literally true, for she owes her life to being one of the fortunate individuals to have undergone transplant surgery. In this interview, Allison provides details on all of this as well as her care at UPMC and with Kaiser insurance and the incredible story of her reaching out to her donor family and then meeting them at The Transplant Games.
