Åsikter som uttrycks är skribentens egna.Finge jag önska något av historien är det att den inte var så tyst. Tänk, till exempel, om det ur städernas husfasader och stenläggningar gick att locka fram några av alla de ljud och röster som genom tiderna har ekat genom gränderna, ungefär som när man spelar upp en grammofonskiva? Om det i en gammal kruka inte bara gick att få syn på krukmakarens fingeravtryck utan också höra sången han nynnade medan han jobbade? Eller om jag hemma i mitt vardagsrum, som en gång lär ha fungerat som kontor för den lokala kooperationen, på något fiffigt vis kunde få golvspringorna och taksprickorna att släppa ifrån sig bara några brottstycken av diskussionerna och skitsnacket från föreningens sammanträden för hundra år sedan? Det skulle förstås mest bli lösryckta fragment, knappt ens begripliga och blandade huller om buller till en ruin av ljud som ändå – eller just i sin kakofoniska röra, tänker jag mig, skulle få det förflutna att kännas lika yrvaket levande som om det aldrig ens hade passerat.Det finns en sådan plats. I Nildalen, ungefär femton mil söder om dagens Kairo, låg en gång den antika staden Oxyrhynchos, ”elefantnosfiskens stad”. För tvåtusen år sedan var den en av det hellenistiska Egyptens metropoler – idag finns inget av den kvar. Det vill säga: av stadens stolta murar och monument återstår i stort sett inte ett spår. Det som bevarats är något helt annat, nästan motsatsen, nämligen dess soptipp. 1896 tog några engelska arkeologer ett spadtag i sanden i utkanten av den gamla staden och stötte på vad som visade sig vara oändliga mängder med gamla papyrusfragment. Bland det första som dök upp var ett litet stycke av Thomasevangeliet, och med skoporna som följde kom det ena efter det andra, en salig röra av dikter och inköpslistor, dramer och polisrapporter, priskuranter, klagomål och kärleksbrev. När de grävt färdigt, efter några år, hade de fått upp ungefär en halv miljon papyrusfragment.Hittills har lite drygt 6000 blivit dechiffrerade och publicerade. Av dem som gått att tidsbestämma kan man dra slutsatsen att soptippen varit i bruk från åtminstone 100-talet före till 700-talet efter vår tideräknings början – det är som om vi idag skulle slänga våra gamla kvitton och reklamblad på samma ställe som på 1200-talet. Och att allt i stort sett skulle finnas kvar. Det urval som publicerades på svenska 2025 omfattade knappt 400 korta texter, en del bara några lösryckta ord, andra fullt bevarade, begripliga utredningar om affärstransaktioner, skilsmässor, transporter och översvämningar. En slav har rymt och blir efterlyst med detaljerat signalement. En man har övermannats av sin kärlekslängtan och nedkallar en erotisk besvärjelse över sin älskade. En pojke deklarerar för sin pappa – vi befinner oss just här på 200-talet – att om han inte får följa med till Alexandria tänker han varken äta eller dricka mer, ”så det så”. En missnöjd kund i klädbutiken blir utsatt för misshandel och gör polisanmälan. Fem dubbla kannor vin ska inhandlas. Ett snabblån utverkas. En råttfångare får betalt.Att läsa dessa texter är som att lägga örat tätt intill en väldigt tunn vägg bakom vilken allt detta fortfarande pågår. Samtidigt, oavbrutet i munnen på vartannat. Pompejis berömda graffiti är dödsviskningar i jämförelse. Det spelar ingen roll att en del knappt går att urskilja, att somligt mest låter som ett osammanhängande mummel när det överröstas av det allmänna sorlet: för det är just själva sorlet som gör alltihop så intensivt levande, denna stockning av uppdämda ögonblick, denna hysteriska historiska samtidighet, detta liv på andra sidan tiden. Detta slumpmässiga, ofrivilliga arkiv av vittnesmål som framträder med sådan omedelbar skärpa och närvaro just för att det inte avsiktligt sparats och arkiverats på någon därför avsedd, avskild plats utan tvärtom medvetet sållats bort, lyfts ut ur tiden och historien.Man skulle kunna säga att om historien är det som blir kvar när tiden har gjort sitt, så är soporna det negativa avtrycket av den. Historiens blundande skugga. Bland det som utmärker vår egen tid är att den tycks vilja bekämpa denna omedvetna skugga med alla medel: lysa upp den, driva den på flykten, spara minsta vittnesbörd och representativa kvarleva i sina arkiv och bibliotek, fysiska och digitala. I världens stora arkiv ryms idag så mycket information att inge människa kan drömma om att få en överblick. I San Francisco i USA står en blinkande superserver, The Wayback Machine, som samlar skärmdumpar av världens internetsidor. Om historien har ett slut är det kanske så här det ser ut – när den sakta men säkert övergår i ögonblicklig, automatisk dokumentering.Men det betyder ju knappast att det i vår tid inte produceras sopor. Tvärtom, soporna hör i själva verket till den moderna civilisationens största produkter. Ett normalt dygn gör vi oss av med ungefär fem miljoner ton – nästan ett kilo skräp per jordinvånare och dag. Georges Bataille skriver i sin essä Den fördömda delen om överflödet som all ekonomisk aktivitets mål och mening. Som alla organiska processer genererar även den mänskliga ekonomin ett överskott, och varje samhällsform definieras av sitt sätt att hantera det. Aztekernas människooffer, Romarrikets militära expansion och vår tids konst och lyxkonsumtion är exempel på hur överskottet leds bort från den produktiva ekonomin och istället genererar existentiella – politiska och kulturella – värden. Samtidigt rör det sig alltså om just en avledning. Överskottet blir ett problem eftersom det frikopplas från den nytta och nödvändighet som ses som motorn i ekonomin. På så vis, menar Bataille, har det en tendens att skapa ångest i ett samhälle där dess problem i grunden förblir olöst.För dagens västerländska konsumenter är denna ångest ständigt närvarande. Vi vill helst inte se vårt överflöd i ögonen. Men avfallet är det ofrånkomliga beviset för detta ångestskapande överskott – därför måste det hållas undan, maskeras och förädlas. Istället för soptipp: återvinningsstation. Istället för att slänga, ”sorterar” vi. Med följden att soporna som sådana försvinner – redan innan de bränns eller återvinns, mals ner och deponeras. Fragmenten från Oxyrrhynchos ger mig en hisnande känsla av att stå inför ett gigantiskt, kollektivt, historiskt minne, ett nät av slumpmässiga synapser som tillsammans bildar något både tidlöst och ögonblickligt. Någon liknande superhjärna lär framtidens akeologer knappast hitta bland det avfall som vi lämnat efter oss. Istället kommer de att storkna framför våra tysta arkiv, förbluffat fråga sig: var detta människor som fanns, på riktigt? Hear how government websites are removing African American and female-focused language in a censoring effort through the experience of one of Dr. Gee's friends and former guest.  Professor Kantrowitz explains the main issue in our country to be addressed is one of free and truthful speech. There is an attack on the truth of history and the realities of our world.  The Wayback Machine  a historian of race, citizenship, and Native-settler interaction in the United States. I am particularly interested in work that spans the antebellum, Civil War, and postbellum eras, and in the connections between the histories of slavery, emancipation, and Reconstruction and the dynamics of Native American life and U.S. conquest. I have recently developed a research interest in the intellectual history of twentieth-century American anthropology in relation to Native-settler interaction.

The poll of 40 analysts and traders returned a median forecast of $3,220 per troy ounce of gold for this year, up from $3,065 predicted in a poll three months ago. The 2026 estimate rose to $3,400 from $3,000. Spot gold prices are up 27% so far this year after hitting a record $3,500 per ounce in April with the U.S. and China in the midst of a full-blown trade war, triggering regular forays into safe-haven assets.
