Life is short. Kate Doerge learned that early on. Now, after more than 25 years of working for other people, she's taking the plunge into entrepreneurship. As Principal of Kate Doerge Consulting (KDC), Kate is betting that her more than two decades of brand-building and communications experience can help prestige consumer brands and investors unlock value at all stages of the investment process. When Kate left her role as partner of Paul Wilmot Communications after 21 years of experience, she thought that she left her network behind. A chance meeting that she almost didn't take pushed her outside her realm and comfort zone and landed her as Head of Marketing at iStar. Without that experience, she doesn't believe she would have founded KDC today. In this episode, you'll learn how Kate channels her physical fitness challenges to inspire her professional risk-taking and how it taught her that she could do anything she sets her mind to with that same passion. She'll share how she tackles goal setting as her own boss and how with a mantra of never burning bridges, she is now tapping into her network to invite them on her journey. You will learn why your network is not a pile of business cards but relationships that need to be nurtured. You'll also understand why every conversation is worth having, even when you don't see the value at the time. *** This episode of LEAVE YOUR MARK is brought to you by one of my all-time favorite brands, Stuart Weitzman! Orphaned as a little girl, Katherine was taken in by her father’s older brother - her uncle - Matthias O'Kelly, and she grew up alongside her cousins. A naturalist, Uncle Matthias fostered Kate’s love for the outdoors and, ultimately, her focus on botany. When Kate was 22 years old, she anonymously published a book that became the first national flora of Ireland, and it was called The Irish Flora Comprising the Phaenogamous Plants and Ferns. With the help of the National Botanic Garden’s John White, Kate’s little book was released in 1833, and it described not only all the Irish flowering plants but also ferns and other cryptograms. Accurate and informative, Kate’s book became a textbook for botany students at Trinity College in Dublin. Three years later, in recognition of her work, Kate became the first woman to be elected to the Botanical Society of Edinburgh. The story of how Kate met her husband Robert is similar to how John Claudius Loudon met his wife, Jane Webb: through her book. In Kate’s case, proofs of The Irish Flora had mistakenly made their way to Robert’s desk. Curious about the work, Robert tracked down Kate’s address and personally returned the proofs to her. The two were married in 1838, and they went on to have ten children. In 1846, Robert was knighted, and Kate became known as Lady Kane. An economist, a chemist, and a scientist, Robert was hired to serve as the President of Queens College. And although Kate was happy for her husband, she put her foot down and refused to move to Cork. Apparently, Kate had designed a magnificent garden with many exotics planted all around their home in Dublin, and she was loath to leave it. And so, much to the school’s dismay, Robert commuted to work until the College insisted he live in Cork during the schoolyear in 1858. And here’s a fun little story about Kate and Robert: as they were both scientists, Kate and Robert would send notes to each other in Greek.   February 25, 1888 Today is the anniversary of the death of the famous Serbian botanist, Josif Pančić (“pahn-Cheetz”) In 1874, Josif discovered the Ramonda serbica, commonly known as the Serbian phoenix flower. Like the peace lily, this flower is an excellent indicator plant and flops quite severely when dehydrated. At the same time, it has incredible abilities to revive itself with watering. In Serbia, the flower of the Ramonda serbica is associated with peace after it became a symbol of Armistice Day, which marked the end of WWI. As for Josif, he became known as the father of Serbian botany. Late in his career, Josif came up with the idea for a botanical garden in Belgrade. Built in 1874, the garden proved to be a bit of a disappointment. In no time, it was apparent that the location was poorly sited because it flooded very quickly and damaged most of the various botanical specimens. Sadly Josif never saw the new, lovelier location for the garden. Perfectly situated in the heart of Belgrade, the land was donated by the Serbian King Milan I.   Unearthed Words Our feeders are only fifteen feet from the window, and binoculars bring the birds practically into my lap. The perky little Sparrow with the black dot on his fluffy breast is a Tree Sparrow, and the one with no dot is a Field Sparrow. I often mix these up. The lady Junko has touches of brown. The male is charming with his slate gray head and back and creamy undersides.   The Nuthatch is another winner. He creeps cheerfully down the maple trunk headfirst. Sometimes his world is upside down, sometimes right side up. He views it with equanimity either way. With a long bill, he reaches out, quickly snatches a seed, and flies off. The markings of the Nuthatch are the essence of winter. His blues and greys are the mist that drift over the meadow and brush against Pop’s Mountain at dusk. The golden tans on his underside are wisps of dried grass in the meadow, Beech leaves in the woods with sun shining on them, or last year's Oak leaves that still cling. — Jean Hersey, American writer and authors, The Shape of a Year, February   Grow That Garden Library Everlastings by Bex Partridge This book came out in 2020, and the subtitle is How to Grow, Harvest, and Create with Dried Flowers. In this book, we learn so much about dried flowers from the floral artist Bex Partridge - the owner of Botanical Tales. A specialist in working with dried flowers - known as everlasting flowers - Bex inspires us to grow, harvest, and create with dried flowers. Sharing her own wisdom from working with everlastings, Bex shares her tips for incorporating dried flowers into your garden planning and home decor. Bex loves dried flowers, and she fervently believes that something magical happens to flowers when they're dried. Although their vibrancy may be slightly dulled by drying, Bex feels that ultimately drying magnifies the bloom’s beauty. One tip that I learned from Bex is to target plants with woody stems because those plants tend to dry beautifully. This book is 160 pages of Everlastings - preserved flowers, preserved memories, and magnified ethereal beauty that is everlasting. You can get a copy of Everlastings by Bex Partridge and support the show using the Amazon Link in today's Show Notes for around $13   Today’s Botanic Spark Reviving the little botanic spark in your heart February 25, 1989 It was on this day that a newspaper out of Melbourne, Australia called The Age ran a story written by Anna Murdoch about a brand new play called “Edna for the Garden,” and it was all about the charismatic Australian gardener, designer, and writer Edna Walling. Here’s an excerpt: “The women who created The Home Cooking Theatre Company in Melbourne [the writer, Suzanne Spunner, and director Meredith Rogers] have a [new] production, called 'Edna for the Garden,’ the story of Edna Walling, one of Australia's great artists of gardening. Edna Walling, who wrote an enormous amount about her philosophy of gardening and the environment, died in 1973 in her late 70s. [Edna] devoted her passionate life to creating extraordinary gardens, mainly in Victoria, some of which are still beautifully maintained.  She spent her childhood in Bickleigh, an old village in Devon, England, and came to Melbourne, aged 18, infused with the intense romanticism of the English countryside where she had watched such subtle beauties as “Wind in the Willows.”  [Edna’s] own photographs were almost always of pathways...  “She liked the idea of different areas in a garden so that you couldn't take it all in in one view."  One of Edna Walling's precepts was to "always sweep up to a house in a curve, never in a straight line.”  People would say: 'You must have Edna for the garden.' [and that saying inspired the name for the play!] "It's only at the end of her life that you sense disappointment as she saw the sprawls of Melbourne and what was happening with conservation.  Edna Walling built her own house at Mooroolbark near Croydon and then bought seven adjoining hectares and created a rural community called Bickleigh Vale, where she designed very English-looking cottages that bore no relationship to the Australian climate and environment. "The people who live there have now formed 'the Friends of Edna Walling' to protect it," Ms. Spunner says. "Some of them knew her. They talk almost as if she is still there, a kind of spirit of the garden."  Finally, there was one little story that I discovered about Edna a while ago, and that was her potato-throwing technique. Edna would throw potatoes on the ground, and where they landed would dictate where the significant trees would be planted in her garden designs. Basically, this technique helped ensure a more naturalistic style as Edna was laying out gardens. And even if the potatoes would land almost on top of each other, Edna let the chips - or should I say potato chips - fall where they may. In any case, this is how Edna’s gardens end up without a contrived or overly planned feeling; there’s a beautiful sense of randomness to Edna’s work. And it was Edna Walling who said, “There are many possible approaches to Australian garden design, and they all reflect the designer’s individual response to gardens. For my part, I love all the things most gardeners abhor - like moss in lawns, lichen on trees, more greenery than color - as if green isn’t a color - bare branches in winter, and root-ridden ground wherein one never attempts to dig, with a natural covering of leaves of grass or of some amenable low-growing plant.  I like the whole thing to be as wild as possible so that you have to fight your way through in places.”   Thanks for listening to The Daily Gardener. And remember: "For a happy, healthy life, garden every day."

Thanks for tuning in as we discuss four female artists from the past and present. Today we are going to tell the stories of these four inspiring women: Harriet Cany Peale, Sarah Freeman Clarke, Mary Cassatt, and Lorna Simpson. Harriet Cany Peale is our most historic artist, being born in 1799, in Philadelphia. Married to Rembrandt Peale as his second wife, Harriet didn’t stop painting when she wed as most women were expected to do at the time. Her work was exhibited for most of her career and can still be found in galleries like the Chrysler Museum of Art, the Schwarz Gallery and many more.Sarah Freeman Clarke was a creative of many types. Born in Boston in 1840, she painted, illustrated, wrote poetry, sketched, and frequently traveled. There is a Facebook group, Old Marietta, that highlights vintage photos of Marietta, Georgia, where Sarah settled down for a time. The page has spotlighted Sarah numerous times. She knew how to network and had friends in high places like Margaret Fuller and Ralph Waldo Emerson. Sarah’s connection to Emerson influenced her work and style. She traveled to the Great Lakes with Margaret Fuller, sketching and painting landscapes along the route. This became part of Fuller’s Summer on the Lakes collection of poetry, art, dialogues, anecdotes and more. Sarah had accumulated thousands of books throughout her years of travel and opened a catalogue of her books to lend out. Eventually her catalogue merged with the Marietta Library Association and today it is part of the 16 branch Cobb Library System as the Clarke Library. Editor's note: When Kate mentions a president who died after eating too many cucumbers and being cut open, she said William McKinley, but we later learned it was Zachary Taylor. Mary Stevenson Cassatt was born in Boston in 1840, as the daughter of two real estate and investment brokers. The high status she was born into led to many early opportunities to travel and explore artistry. Although women were discouraged from pursuing careers, she enrolled in the Philadelphia Academy of Fine Arts at 16 years old. She ended up quitting the program to move to Paris after realizing the courses were slow and inadequate. Her portrait titled The Mandoline Player was selected for display by Paris Milan, an exclusive annual exhibition organized by the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture. Finally, we discuss modern artist Lorna Simpson who continues to produce art. Lorna’s style and choice of mediums has evolved over the course of her career. She has drawn, painted, photographed and sculpted hundreds of works of art in her lifetime already. As a pioneering feminist, her work raises questions about the nature of representation, identity, gender, race and history. Listen in for her full story! We could have seen at least one of the basketball star being under the influence while teaching Rick how to shoot hoops instead of him learning about it in the paper, feels like kind of a cop out. How The President Of Microsoft U.S. Leads With Courage & Empathy

The Future of Work With Jacob Morgan

Kate Johnson is President of Microsoft US, a $45 billion division  including all of Microsoft’s solutions, services, and support revenues across public and private sectors in the United States. Kate is responsible for a team of 10,000 people and she is currently very involved in Microsoft’s culture journey led by CEO Satya Nadella. Prior to Microsoft Kate served as the Chief Commercial Officer for GE Digital. She has held several key senior leadership roles at GE, Oracle, Red Hat, and Deloitte Consulting. With the chaotic state of the world right now we need leaders who are courageous and empathetic. One leader who truly understands how to lead with both courage and empathy in these challenging times is Kate Johnson, the President of Microsoft US. Leaders can’t just stay where they are comfortable anymore, they have to be willing to take a risk and own all the consequences. They have to be open, transparent, and vulnerable. They have a deep understanding of their people and their customers. When the CEO of Microsoft, Satya Nadella, first approached Kate she was working for GE and felt very loyal to the company. She had no intentions of leaving the company. But she couldn’t turn down a meeting with Satya. And the reason she ended up making the move was because of something he said. When Kate had asked Satya about his philosophy around culture he said that Carol Dweck was one of his personal coaches and he spoke of how a growth mindset has the ability to unlock the purpose of a company and the potential of the people. Hearing that Kate knew there was alignment from the top to the bottom of Microsoft and she jumped at the opportunity to be a part of it. How to lead with courage  Most people probably think about courageous leadership as guns blazing in the heat of the battle or a leader who is invincible and strong. But Kate’s definition is a bit different than that. She says, “One of the things that we've been learning is the connection between courage and vulnerability. So everybody thinks if you're courageous, that you have no weakness. You are strong, they picture warriors, you know, with lots of armor and heading off. That's not what courageous leadership is. Courageous leadership is the willingness to activate the troops and own the outcome, but also to do so bringing all of your strengths and weaknesses to the table with total transparency and clarity, and kind of owning work with that and figuring out how to assemble the team to bolster wherever there are weaknesses. And that's a different kind of leadership that I think is essential today. One example Kate shared of how she is living out courageous leadership has to do with the training she has been going through with her team. Kate asked Brene Brown to help 140 leaders in her division. During this learning journey the whole group went to Alabama to spend time with the famed Harvard attorney Bryan Stevenson to talk about race in America. The group read his book and then spent a few hours talking with him. They were so shocked and moved by what he said they decided they needed to learn more. Kate asked Bryan to speak at the Microsoft Sales Kickoff, which was a great success. Not only did he receive two standing ovations from the entire US team but it opened up some great conversations about race. Kate and her team decided to go together--7,000 people across 42 movie theaters to see the movie Just Mercy. Throughout this year she has reached out to her team to ask what she can do to address racial inequalities and racial tensions. She has opened up some tough conversations and pushed the organization to do better. This is what courageous leadership is. When asked what courageous leadership looks like Kate said, “There's a million different examples that I could give to you. But the one that resonates most frequently, is when you see a person trying to get it right, instead of trying to be right. She mentioned how Microsoft used to be a company of “know it alls” but now, under Satya’s leadership it has become a company of “learn it alls”. “And a learn it all is somebody who has no preconceived notion of what the answer is, and is all about creating an inclusive process to go get that answer. Courageous leaders show up like that every single day, versus one that isn't so courageous as one that walks into the room, thinking they know the answer, and thinking that their job is to convince everybody else what the answer is. And it's that get it right versus think you're right.” Balancing family and work A lot of leaders struggle with balancing work and personal life. There is sometimes a struggle for female leaders specifically who may be pressured by society or a boss to pick between an executive role and a family life, thinking both can’t be possible. But as Kate shows, it is definitely possible to be a successful leader and a great parent and spouse. But it takes work and intentionality. Kate says it all comes down to making sacrifices. And she has a practice in place that really helps her put up boundaries. She gives her kids her calendar at the beginning of the year and they get to block out important dates, whether it is a school recital or a sports tournament or graduation. And then her team knows that those dates are spoken for. There are also certain work black out dates which she knows she has to be present at work for. And it’s when some of the dates overlap that all parties have to come together to find a solution. But it all works out. Kate says, “I've always balanced it. And I've always enjoyed both roles. And the more that I can be the same person, as I play both roles, you know, mom to Owen and Jake and leader of MSUS, being the same authentic person with same quality, same sense of humor, same flaws, same pros and cons that's when I know I'm doing it right.” Kate’s advice for female leaders Kate admits that when she first started as a leader she said no to her family more than she did to work, because she felt like she had something to prove and she had to show she was willing to work hard. She didn’t have confidence that her boss would understand if she said no to work. But she had a wake up call from a boss one time. Kate’s boss asked her one day, “if you didn’t show up to work tomorrow, do you know what would happen?” and Kate said, “I don’t know, what?” and her boss replied “nothing”. The sun will still come up tomorrow whether or not you are here. She learned that it is okay to say no to work. People will understand. As long as when you are at work you work hard and you have a good reputation, no one is going to think you are lazy if you say no from time to time. It’s okay to say no. In fact, Kate says saying no to some things will probably help you raise the quality of your game and the places where you do say yes. And this is not something she just practices herself, she coaches her people to say no too. She actually sent a note out this past month to remind her team to say no more often, especially to things like internal meetings where it doesn’t really bring any value to customers. The key to saying no is providing an alternative. If you have to say no to a meeting maybe someone else at your level can attend, or maybe the meeting can be moved, or perhaps they could tape the meeting for you so you can keep up to date. How Microsoft is focusing on empathy The purpose and mission of Microsoft is to empower every person and organization on the planet to achieve more. In order to do that they understand they have to prioritize empathy. Kate says empathy is just deep understanding. In order to serve their customers employees need to know how to be empathetic and how to immerse themselves in the needs of their clients. Kate truly believes that, “our empathic muscle is directly tied to how much share we can grab in the cloud market.” So they practice empathy every single day. Microsoft leaders teach employees how to be empathetic. When interacting with customers employees should listen before they talk. Instead of just talking about the products and services, employees should first get to know the clients unique problems and needs. Satya Nadella models this for the rest of the company. Kate says Satya is one of the most empathic leaders she has ever worked for. Kate went with Satya one time to see a customer in Nebraska. In order to understand the technology inside of a combine used in the customer’s fields Satya actually got into the combine and drove it. As Kate shares, “You can't be empathic without having that proximity, that closeness, to deeply understand something. And so, I hope we're doing it every single day. Now, it's a little bit more difficult in the virtual world to practice empathy. But, you know, I think we're starting to get the hang of moving from this notion of physical proximity to emotional and intellectual proximity, where asking the right questions is how you unlock the next level of learning, as opposed to just getting physical proximity and having great observation skills.”   This episode of Future of Work is supported by Teamistry, a podcast that tells the stories of teams who work together in new and unexpected ways… to beat the odds. Each episode tells a unique story and provides practical lessons for your team and your business. I got a sneak peek of season 2 and was immediately sucked in with its documentary-style narration, details about stories I thought I knew but didn’t, and practical lessons that I was able to apply to my business. Check it out here.

It's a big moment for episode seventy-three of The Presentation Boss Podcast. When Kate and Thomas first planned out the speech breakdown format, this was the first talk Thomas added to the list. Sir Ken Robinson's famous TED Talk was only the sixth ever uploaded to the TED website and has since become the single most-watched TED Talk of all time. And, in so many ways it is brilliant and worthy of being so dang popular.Sadly, Sir Ken Robinson passed away in August 2020. And while Presentation Boss hesitated to tackle such a massive speech, to honour his passing, in this episode we break down this iconic talk. It is a masterclass in storytelling and humour to deliver a heavily-relatable message. Oddly, in a few ways, this speech is an example of how breaking the usual rules in the right way can have such a massive impact. One of the behaviors that helps me identify someone’s money story as Survival is the constant running. If your money story is Survival, that’s usually your life’s story as well.  Everything is on fire. You run a hundred miles an hour or you are crashed out on the couch. Balance is something you talk about wanting but have no idea how to get that, which makes sense. Your story doesn’t allow for balance. It’s all or nothing. That goes for time, energy and money. When Survival is your story, often when you start to grow, and fear creeps in, conscious or unconscious, you start moving faster. You start spending faster. You don’t pay attention to your money. You get yourself into frantic mode, because eventhough it doesn’t feel good, it feels safe.  Creating a crash feels safe because you know you can Survive.  But surviving is not thriving. So, if Survival is your story you have to wire your brain differently. You have to do things to slow down and find the feel good in that.  When Kate manifested (yes if you’ve been listening to her story unfold you know she takes full responsibility for creating what she did) leaving The Enchanted Circle, she had to slow down and just do the work.  It was the only thing to do.  And getting a part time job made her slow down “trying” to build her business.  It was all working to give her the insight and the brain adjustment she needed to let go of so much of her Survival story in a big way. When you listen to this interview you’ll hear how she now feels good in safety. This interview took place at the beginning of Covid and she talks about putting some things in place as a safety net. That is something you don’t have and doesn’t even feel good when you’e in the story of Survival.  Listen to this interview for evidence that change is totally possible and to hear how Kate is even able to see patterns emerge in her relationship. There is always a path to your Future Self. Sometimes we’re not ready. So we stop doing the work. We stop being honest with ourselves. We force. We hide. We keep from getting the help we need. Once you’ve opened the portal to your Future Self that denial to become her causes upheaval and it’s not fun. It can also feel like that upheaval takes us further from our Future Self.  And the one thing I know for sure is that there is always a path to your Future Self. When you don’t take the first one she set out for you, you might have to travel through the dark and lonely woods, but on the other side will be a new path.  There isn’t only one path to your Future Self. And she will always lay a new path for you when you’re ready. While in moments Kate denied her Future Self by not stepping into her, her Future Self always had her back.  When Kate didn’t step through one door, her Future Self would show her another option.  In Kate’s case it was a job that supported her while she transitioned more into her Future Self. In June of 1940, when Paris fell to the Nazis, Hitler spent a total of three hours in the City of Light—abruptly leaving, never to return. To this day, no one knows why. The New York Times bestselling author of the Aimée Leduc investigations reimagines history in her masterful, pulse-pounding spy thriller, Three Hours in Paris. Kate Rees, a young American markswoman, has been recruited by British intelligence to drop into Paris with a dangerous assignment: assassinate the Führer. Wrecked by grief after a Luftwaffe bombing killed her husband and infant daughter, she is armed with a rifle, a vendetta, and a fierce resolve. But other than rushed and rudimentary instruction, she has no formal spy training. Thrust into the red-hot center of the war, a country girl from rural Oregon finds herself holding the fate of the world in her hands. When Kate misses her mark and the plan unravels, Kate is on the run for her life—all the time wrestling with the suspicion that the whole operation was a set-up. Cara Black, doyenne of the Parisian crime novel, is at her best as she brings Occupation-era France to vivid life in this gripping story (her first stand-alone) about one young woman with the temerity—and drive—to take on Hitler himself. *Features an illustrated map of 1940s Paris as full color endpapers.

Today we celebrate the Swiss botanist known as the father of geographical botany and the American botanist who went on a 500-mile nature walk for her honeymoon. And, just in time for Halloween, we'll learn about the botanist who followed in her father's footsteps to study slime mold. And, we're coming up on the 200th anniversary of the botanist who climbed Pike's Peak and discovered the Blue Columbine, also known as the State Flower of Colorado. We'll hear one of my favorite poems about Octob er with the line, "The leaves by hundreds came." We Grow That Garden Library with a beautiful book from one of the country's top gardens: Philadelphia's Chanticleer.  I'll give you some helpful tips to attract birds to your garden over the winter, and then we'll wrap things up with a Scottish garden that is also a living work of art.   But first, let's catch up on a few recent events. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch shared last week that the Missouri Botanical Garden is gearing up to break ground this January on a $92 million brand new visitor center.   It will be called the Jack C Taylor Visitor Center in honor of the Taylor family, who donated the lead gift for the project. Jack Crawford Taylor founded the Enterprise Rent-A-Car Company. Taylor left a legacy of philanthropy. Taylor gave a $30 million gift to the Missouri Botanical Garden to fund global plant research - which is the most significant gift ever given to a U.S. botanical garden. The new Jack C Taylor Visitor Center is slated to open in the Spring of 2022.     California's Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery (CalRecycle) has a fantastic tradition of environmental stewardship.  Last week they put together a great video with tips on how to get started with composting.    Now, if you'd like to check out these curated articles for yourself, you're in luck - because I share all of it with the Listener Community in the Free Facebook Group - The Daily Gardener Community. So there’s no need to take notes or track down links - just head on over to the group - and join.    Brevities   #OTD  Today is the birthday of the botanist Alphonse Pyramus de Candolle, who was born on this day in 1806 the year Linnaeus died.   He was the son of the Swiss botanist Augustin Pyramus de Candolle.   Candolle's ground-breaking book, Origin for Cultivated Plants begins, "It is a common saying, that the plants with which man has most to do, and which rendered him the greatest service, are those which botanists know the least [about].” Candolle set about correcting that gap in understanding, which had persisted for 50 years. In 1885, The Glasgow Herald reminded readers, "At the commencement of the present century but little was known respecting the origin of our cultivated plants....   Alexander von Humboldt in 1807 said : 'The origin, the first home of the plants most useful to man, and which have accompanied him from the remotest epochs, is a secret as impenetrable as the dwelling of all our domestic animals. We do not know what region produced spontaneously wheat, barley, oats, and rye. The plants which constitute the natural riches of all the inhabitants of the tropics the banana, the papaw, the manioc, and maize have never been found in a wild state. The potato presents the same phenomenon.'"        Candolle named growing regions and came up with climate classifications. Gardeners use them today when we refer to growing zones.  Alphonse Pyramus de Candolle is known as the father of geographical botany, and Harvard botanist Asa Gray remarked, "De Candolle's great work closed one epoch in the history of the subject and [Sir Joseph] Hooker's name is the first that appears in the ensuing one." Alphonse devised the first code of botanical nomenclature - the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature is its descendant.  These laws ensure that no two species of plants have the same name.  The botanical name is always in Latin.         #OTD  Today is the 175th birthday of the botanist Katherine Brandagee who was born on this day in 1844. Brandagee was the third woman to enroll at Berkeley’s medical school and the second woman to be professionally employed as a botanist in the US.   While getting her MD at Berkeley, Kate had learned that plants were the primary sources of medicine. Botany intrigued her, so she dropped the mantle of physician to pursue botany.  Five years later, she was the curator of the San Francisco Academy of Sciences herbarium.  There, Kate personally trained Alice Eastwood. When Kate moved on, Alice was ready to take her place; Kate was a phenomenal mentor.   During her time at the academy, in surprise development at the age of 40, Kate had “fallen insanely in love” with plantsman Townshend Brandegee.  Equally yoked, their honeymoon was a 500-mile nature walk - collecting plant specimens from San Diego to San Francisco.  The couple moved to San Diego, where they created a herbarium praised as a botanical paradise.   In 1906, when an earthquake destroyed the Berkley herbarium, the Brandegees single-handedly restored it by giving the school their entire botanical library (including many rare volumes) and their plant collection, which numbered some 80,000 plants. Thanks to Townshend's inheritance, the couple was financially independent, but they were also exceptionally selfless. The Brandegee’s followed their plants and books to Berkley, where Townshend and Kate worked the rest of their lives pro bono.   Botanist Marcus Jones said of Kate, “She was the one botanist competent to publish a real [book about the native plants of California].” But Kate had delayed writing this work.  Kate was 75 when she fell on the University grounds at Berkley - she broke her shoulder.  Three weeks later, she died.      #OTD  Today is the birthday of the original Queen of Slime Molds, Gulielma Lister, who was born on this day in 1860. Gulielma was born into a Quaker family in England, and her family and friends called her Gulie. Her mom and dad were a classic match of opposites. Her mother was a right-brained creative - an artist - and her father was a left-brained scientist who was the world authority on slime mold. Gulie studied at home and learned from both her parents. The Lister family home was called Sycamore House, and it was located on Leytonstone High Road. She spent her summers at the family summer house in Lyme Regis. Both houses just happened to be near nature areas rich with slime mold. Slime molds are pulsing giant amebas that slowly move through soil or along the tree trunks hunting for their food. Gulie called them “[her] creepies”!  Gulie ended up shadowing her father, and she became very involved with his work. Together, Gulie and her father prepared the world's primary study on Slime Mold. Drawing from skills she learned from her mom, Gulie painted many gorgeous watercolors of her slime mold specimens. When her father died in 1908, Gulie was ready to fill his shoes as the world authority on slime mold. Over her lifetime, Gulie helped found the British Mycological Society and served as it's president twice in 1912 and 1932. Gulie was among the first women fellows of the Linnean Society.     #OTD  Today is the anniversary of the death of the botanist Edwin James who died on this day in 1861 As a young man, James compiled the very first Flora of Vermont plants. James went on one of the first expeditions of the American West from Pittsburgh to the Rocky Mountains.  He discovered the mountain Columbine, Aquilegia caerulea, which ultimately became known as the Colorado Blue Columbine and the State Flower of Colorado. An account of James' climb of Pikes Peak on July 13, 1820, stated: "A little above the point where the timber disappears entirely, commences a region of astonishing beauty . . . covered with a carpet of low but brilliantly flowering alpine plants. . ." James' words, "a region of astonishing beauty," became the title of a 2003 book on the botanical history of the Rocky Mountains by Roger Lawrence Williams. After the expedition, James married and settled in Burlington, Iowa. His home was part of the Underground Railroad. James died in 1861 after an accident. There is a monument to James on Pike's Peak, and the Des Moines County Medical Society planted Rocky Mountain Blue Columbine on his grave in the Rock Springs Cemetery. Newspaper accounts said the location of Edwin James' grave was in the most picturesque part of southeastern Iowa.       Unearthed Words   October's Party "October gave a party; The leaves by hundreds came- The Chestnuts, Oaks, and Maples, And leaves of every name. The Sunshine spread a carpet, And everything was grand, Miss Weather led the dancing, Professor Wind the band." - George Cooper, American Poet George Cooper remembered for his happy song lyrics, which were often set to music written by Stephen Foster.     Today's book recommendation: The Art of Gardening by R.William Thomas & The Chanticleer Gardeners   This lovely book came out in 2015, and the subtitle is Design Inspiration and Innovative Planting Techniques from Chanticleer. Chanticleer is a 35-acre public garden outside of Philadelphia, and it is regarded as one of America's top gardens. Chanticleer has a staff of six gardeners, and each gardener is responsible for the design, planting, and maintenance of a section of the garden. Thus, this book was written by all of the different gardeners. As the garden's Executive Director likes to say, “Chanticleer is essentially a large demonstration garden. Our guests take away ideas on how to garden in their own home spaces.” This is the perfect book for the off-season. It's a book that is loaded with beautiful photos and fantastic ideas that are great for planning next year's new landscaping projects.   This is a beautiful book for browsing and dreaming - and would make a lovely gift for the holidays. I love what the Executive Director R William Thomas says in the introduction about the value of walking through the garden. He wrote: "[The son of the garden's founder, Adolf Rosengarten Junior, began each day with a walk around the garden accompanied by his corgi. He greeted the staff, encouraged them to work hard, grabbed a snack at the Apple house, and reviewed the property. I, too, begin each day with a walk around the garden with my corgi. It’s much more than a lovely stroll. It’s an inspection tour, a remembrance of what the property was, and most important, a meditation on what it can be.   I stop frequently looking both up close and into the distance. What does this part of the garden look like to a first-time guest? Is it as good as it can be? How will the area look in a month? In three months? A year? In a decade? Could this bed be better? Is it time to try something new? Should this path be moved? Is that tree going to block the view in 20 years? Would a tower draw guests up the Bulb Meadow, the hill above the Asian Woods? Can we illuminate steps to improve accessibility? Do all the garden areas hold together as one garden? I also pull a few weeds clear the spillways, prune an occasional branch, pick up the litter, and check the restrooms." Great questions and a great practice to follow in our own gardens.        Today's Garden Chore It's time to start planning food and feeders for winter birds. This is a great week to get your feeders ready to go before the holidays set in.  One of the best tips I ever received from a fellow birder was to invest in a variety of feeders and foods; the diversity will draw a community of birds to your garden in the winter. Right as I'm putting away the Halloween decorations, I'll make a point to wash and set up my feeders. During the summer, I'm more focused on providing sources of water. But in the winter, I try to make sure my feeders are in spots that I can get to - especially if I need to make a path with the snowblower. A few other considerations would be to purchase a de-icer for your birdbath. I have a friend that likes to use a heated dog dish as a source of water instead of a birdbath. I've used both and either work great. And here's a final tip for you. My folks always save smaller dead trees, shrubs, or brush to position near their feeders so that the birds have a nearby place to take cover. Evergreens, branches, and twigs provide needed shelter and protection. Finally, pat yourself on the back if you've incorporated berry-producing trees and shrubs like serviceberry, dogwood, and viburnum. You'll be rewarded with even more birds over the years, like the Cedar Waxwing - one of my favorites.          Something Sweet  Reviving the little botanic spark in your heart  Today is the birthday of the Scottish poet, artist, and gardener Ian Hamilton Finlay who was born on this day in 1925. Finlay created a one-of-a-kind garden that incorporated sculptures, words, architecture, and poetry. Finlay named his garden Little Sparta and the garden itself is considered a living piece of art. Finlay's poetry is incorporated into the art at Little Sparta. One especially poignant piece is a one-word poem with a long title - a form of poetry Finlay pioneered. In the garden, there is a small engraved plate that shares the long title, followed by a single word that makes up the poem. Here it is: "One orange arm of the world's oldest windmill Autumn"     Thanks for listening to the daily gardener, and remember: "For a happy, healthy life, garden every day."

LISTEN TO WOMEN, FOLKS.Phew, now we’ve got that out of the way. This is the story of Catherine and David Birnie, sure, but more importantly, it’s the story about a survivor, Kate Moir, and how her ingenuity, bravery, and commitment to the truth led to the arrest of two serial murderers and rapists.Kate survived an abduction, several rapes, imprisonment, and narrowly escaped being murdered, but when she went to the police, they tried to ‘stitch her up’ into giving a false report. But Laura Hancock, the only female police officer at the station, believed Kate’s story, and nagged her superior officers to pay attention. When Kate gave the name of one of her captors – David Birnie – the police finally released they had the missing piece in a month-long series of unsolved missing women.Listen to women.EPISODE NOTES:David and Catherine Birnie have been called ‘Australia’s Bonnie and Clyde’, due to the fact that 1) they were a couple and 2) they committed a boatload of crimes, but to compare them to like, whimsical old-timey bankrobbers completely diminishes the reality of these two sadistic killers.David and Catherine Birnie lured five women back to their home in Moorhouse Street to rape, torture and kill them. They murdered Mary Neilson, Susannah Candy, Noelene Patterson, Denise Brown over the course of a month in 1986, dumping their bodies in shallow graves in national parks. They did it all to satisfy David’s lust, with Catherine a willing enabler and participant. They tried to do the same to Kate Moir, but she managed to escape, get help, and tell the police her horrible story. Initially, the police were skeptical of her story, but Kate’s bravery and commitment to detail convinced them that she was indeed telling the truth, and David eventually led police to the bodies of the other four women.David committed suicide in 2005, but Catherine is still alive and well (maybe, we aren’t checking up on her) and imprisoned in Bandyup Women’s Prison. By order of the Attorney-General, she will remain imprisoned for life, with no possibility of parole.Hear all about the case from Kate herself here, if you’re in Australia and have access to 7plus (or if you have a VPN) https://7plus.com.au/murder-uncovered?fbclid=IwAR0YBqTUwwAAEp1Cz7-mBYo7sTC2peGTD3a46qW3miPeeQIwSyyEshfiV2kTo learn more about the controversy about the film Hounds of Love, go here https://thewest.com.au/news/wa/survivor-blasts-birnie-film-ng-ya-114131?fbclid=IwAR39RXFtVSZ-FysypCkVjoVcD_i7psZdFJV7aBsy_MjO68wUFl1YxBvDuDcFor everything else, there’s Murderpedia https://murderpedia.org/male.B/b/birnie-david.htmIf you like what we do please consider supporting us on PATREONSubscribe to the podcast on ITUNES, STITCHER, SPOTIFY or your podcatcher of choice.Find us on FACEBOOK, TWITTER, INSTAGRAM or EMAIL us on murderinthelandofoz@gmail.comwww.thatsnotcanonproductions.com

In this episode of Wholehearted: Love Sex + Intimacy – The Podcast, Kate Toon joins me to dive into the art of talking dirty with your partner. When Kate reached out to me and said she gave 'great pod' - and had worked on a sex chat line, I knew I had to have her on the show. Talking about sex and what we want can feel uncomfortable and just downright weird when we’re not used to it. This podcast episode aims to empower you with some tips to get the sexy conversation started with your partner without it feeling forced or unnatural. We all have the ability to ‘talk sexy’, you just need to find what works for you and ultimately your relationship. In this episode, we discuss:  - Kate Toon’s experience working on a phone sex line. - Something I talk a lot about on this show and in my work are the ways women hold themselves back during sex. We are given so many cultural messages that it’s not okay to be a woman who enjoys or feels comfortable with sex. And we’re not taught how to do it. This episode offers advice on how to become more comfortable with sex. - Kate’s a copywriter and therefore master of words with some great tips or talking dirty and words that work/ don’t work to get you in the mood. HOT TIP: it doesn’t need to sound unnatural or over-the-top to be sexy. - Sexting is also something women ask me about a lot! I did a survey as part of some research I was doing last year and I was overwhelmed with women telling me they would love to sext their partner but feel like they don’t know how. Kate and I discuss some great sexting tips. - How ‘good sexual communication helps improve our sexual satisfaction.’ Learn to: Ask for what we want / don’t want in the bedroom Share appreciation or tell your partner what you like. - Getting out of the ‘functional sex’ rut – how can you reignite the flame after having kids / being in a long term relationship? - Kate’s experience at a Fellatio workshop. Learn how to making fellatio work for you and your partner. - Shift your mindset of fellatio ‘as a gift for him or a reward or chore’ to ‘learn how to get pleasure out of doing it for yourself.’ - We’ve grown up in a society where we’re not given the skills or the right attitude towards sex. How can we move past that for ourselves and a healthier relationship?   Follow our Podcast Follow our Host - Isiah McKimmie - Couples Therapist + Sexologist Join our Group and the conversation - Wholehearted: Love , Sex + Intimacy   Explore these Resources In this episode, we mentioned the following resources: Tips for talking dirty with your Partner : It doesn’t need to sound unnatural or over-the-top. Good sexual communication helps improve our sexual satisfaction – learn to: Ask for what we want/ don’t want Share appreciation or tell your partner what you like. An easy place to start is giving compliments to your partner. Positive feedback i.e. How much you’re enjoying it and how they make you feel, how great they look etc. Even start after sex, because it’s harder in the moment. Remember: to tell your partner what you enjoyed NOT what you didn’t enjoy. Start by sending messages, because it’s less confronting and gives you more time to think. Read for inspiration - discover what you like. How? ‘Do a bit of googling and find some ‘sexy articles/ tips’ i.e ‘5 new sex positions to try’ and send those articles to your partner. There’s a lot of good content out there that you can share. If you don’t have the words yourself- use someone else’s’ –Kate Toon's! Do your research- read a sexy novel- choose the parts that turn you on and put it in a text message to your partner. Or tell them this is something you want to try. Send a voicemail to your partner. It gets unsexy when you get analytical about it.   Some tips to help you in the sexting department from Kate Toon https://www.katetooncopywriter.com.au/how-to-write-sexy-copy-six-sensual-tips/   1:  Use unexpected and sensual words to describe everyday objects.  'How about the gentle curve of the bath tap, or the soft undulating feel of that doona?'   2:  Appeal to the senses ‘Describe the touch, smell and even taste. Sound can also be useful.’   3:  Don’t overdo it ‘I have a three adjective rule, which means I never use more than three in a row.’   4:  Avoid the Mills & Boon effect ‘choosing the right sexy words can be tough…’ ‘Here’s some help in choosing the right ones:’   Phrases we loved   Phrases we hated   ‘Copy that tries too hard to be sexy just causes a snigger rather than an emotional or sensual response. So if in doubt, don’t.’   Check out more about Kate at her website: https://www.katetoon.com   If you are a new listener to Wholehearted: Love Sex + Intimacy – The Podcast, we would love to hear from you.  Please visit our Contact Page and let us know how we can help you today!

Happy Sunday Night Everyone, Angela Bowen here, the host of Together, We're Gonna Find Our Way: An Unofficial Silver Spoons Podcast. Here is S1E20: The Empire Strikes Out, which aired on February 26, 1983. In this episode Grandfather Stratton offers Kate an executive position in California, hoping that Edward will marry an heiress to expand the family fortune. When Kate finds out, Edward's relationships with both her and his father seem to be over. Also in this episode we get a reappearance by the Tommy the Therapist doll. Who’s diagnosis is for Rick to have a lobotomy after he confesses he’s not depressed anymore and he’s the happiness he’s ever been and his life is perfect. Again, I say, this toy would never be enjoyed by children and is more suitable for therapists as a Christmas gag gift. I love how Ricky manages to get to his grandfather and make him see reason by pulling on the old man’s heartstrings via a photograph of his deceased wife Abigail. I made my own discovery this episode and did some sleuthing. I’ll make mention of my results in a separate post. Next week on the podcast we get a surprise and I think unwelcome finish from Bob Danish in S1E21: Won't You Go Home, Bob Danish, which aired on March 5, 1983. In this episode An old suitor of Kate's accidentally crashes his small plane on the grounds of the Strattons' estate, after flying low over the house in an effort to impress her, and Edward reluctantly invites him to stay due to his injured leg. On this episode, Kate Conroy, a real estate agent in Tampa, FL, shares the role that coaching played in her journey from $4.8 million to $17.7 million in volume.     The real estate world has hundreds of directions, but I want to live a life by design and use systems that I know have been proven. -Kate Conroy   Three Things We Learned From This Episode   How Career Visioning revealed Kate's potential When Kate initially applied for a real estate job, she wasn’t able to move forward without a real estate license. When Kate came to the USDA’s BioPreferred Program, one of the program’s biggest challenges was finding a way to educate the public on biobased products and creating a system that would certify those products. Thus, the USDA’s Certified BioPreferred label was born. Since the inception of the BioPreferred label, the program has certified 3,500 products in over 100 categories. To search the online catalog of certified products, check out the BioPreferred website at https://www.biopreferred.gov/BioPreferred/faces/catalog/Catalog.xhtml. But, wait. What is a biobased product? Kate goes into detail about what makes a particular product biobased and eligible to receive the Certified BioPreferred label. Haven’t heard of biobased products before? You’re not alone. According to a survey conducted by the Bioproducts Innovation Center at The Ohio State University, only 8% of the public are aware of biobased products. How can we change that? Kate has some advice for people who are interested in creating a more sustainable future and how you can get involved. Music is Beyond The Line from Bensound.com

Picture this: you're at a yard sale, browsing a selection of DVDs, when you're faced with a choice: Secondhand Lions (2003) or Dodgeball (2004). They're marked $3 dollars each, and you only have $2.83 in assorted coins jangling in your pocket. Your hands are shaking. You know you can't take them both home with you. You'll barely be able to haggle the price down to buy one and still have a quarter for that waterlogged paperback copy of "A Million Little Pieces" by James Frey that you've been eyeing. What do you do? Which do you choose? Well, we can't answer that for you. That's your own journey. When Kate made the same offer to Janine, however, she decided to go with Dodgeball, a mid-2000s comedy starring Vince Vaughn and Ben Stiller. Kate Ouellette-Cretsinger: Cycling 225 Miles With No Food And Discovering The Healing Powers Of The Carnivore Diet

The B.rad Podcast

*Get ready for an incredible story from* *K84 Wellness* ( https://k84wellness.com/ ) *podcast host and nutrition coach Kate Ouellette-Cretsinger from Peterborough, NH. Kate will talk about her long journey into diet optimization, which started with a lifetime of suffering from what we now know is leaky gut syndrome, to discover vegetarian, then keto vegetarian for seven years, and finally, an amazing awakening into the carnivore diet.* Kate relates some amazing success stories with the carnivore strategy: her daughter’s managing depression, anxiety and losing 85 pounds in a single year and a client’s success from decades long debilitating illness Crohn’s disease. Kate tried it, and found that she experienced greater mental clarity, as well as an improvement in digestive function. To celebrate the first anniversary of her carnivore eating, Kate dreamed up an incredible solo challenge of riding her bicycle the length of Vermont, from the Canadian border to the Massachusetts border. This was a ride of 225 miles over two days, and 14,500 feet of climbing! Kate also shares stories from her health journey and details what led her to the amazing place she is today. She reflects on the way her diet has changed and the days when she used to drink 8 juices in a single day, assuming that the gas and bloating she was experiencing were normal. She also shares how once she went vegetarian keto, she felt much clearer mentally, started sleeping better, and also just felt lighter as the inflammation in her body began to decrease. She also realized that everything is connected, and that getting rid of the inflammation in her head was the first thing she had to, before all else. “When you get rid of that inflammation in your head, it opens possibilities to other things too,” she says. She started paying attention to what was going on inside her head, the meaning behind the words she was saying, and the stories she was continually telling about herself, including negative self-talk, and began to focus on working on all aspects of her life, and not just the diet part. “I kept working on the internal stuff...and it is hard work to keep changing those thoughts,” Kate comments. However, once she changed the way she ate (particularly with adding in fat) she found that it wasn’t as hard anymore….in fact, it wasn’t hard at all for her to change her thoughts or to be less emotionally reactive and angry. This prompted Kate’s realization that, “A lot of the nutrition that we eat does affect our brain” and the rest is history! Today, Kate advocates for a nutrient dense, carnivore diet for all her clients, and suggests going strictly carnivore for two weeks, (then you can start to slowly incorporate avocado) for those who want to decrease inflammation and identify any potential irritants in their diet. She also makes the convincing case for eating fruit, and says, “Anything that comes off the plant, is what I would suggest to eat.” Another tip from Kate: carefully look through the ingredient list of your supplements, because if you have reactions to a certain ingredient in its whole food form, then it will still bother you if it is incorporated into a pill: “When you have a weak immune system, where you have something that’s bothering it, and then you’re adding [inflammatory foods] in, your body is more susceptible to having these symptoms and sensitivities.” Kate also points out that we are so used to symptoms of inflammation being so common that we think it’s normal, when it is actually far from it: “Anything that is not normal is considered to be autoimmune. Headaches, joint pain….these things that we think are normal, are not normal.” Kate then walks us through the wonderfully detailed nutrient density chart she made for her clients to wrap up the show, so be sure to take advantage and take a few notes! Enjoy this informative show with Kate and learn more at her health coaching website, K84Wellness.com ( https://k84wellness.com/ ) *TIMESTAMPS:* Brad introduces Kate, a nutrition coach, who has a very interesting story to tell of her dietary transformation. [06:06] The Institute of Integrative Nutrition is a prominent online meeting the individual needs of the client. [09:10] Kate works with many chiropractic patients. How does she meet their needs? [10:55] When Kate thought she was eating healthy, she focused on rice and beans, and suffered from gas and bloating. [13:03] When you are dealing with this frantic stressful life, you lose sleep, lose focus, and usually your nutrition goes to pot. The realization of the need for internal healing is the first step. [15:47] Your internal struggles and nutrition are connected. [18:13] We know more about female health. Eating red meat gets rid of PMS. [21:22] What did she notice that had to go in order to heal her gut? [23:10] There is always room for improvement in anything we do. [26:54] Red meat is actually a healthier choice than fish or chicken. [28:32] What protocol did you put on someone with Crohn’s disease or IBS? [31:19] We can’t eat something until we soak, sprout, ferment, and render these things less harmful. [37:26] Kate’s daughter’s switch to carnivore changed her life. Kate had to gradually cut back her avocados. [41:15] Many of the fishes have a high metal count. There are many things that are better raw. [46:37] What about things like plain high-fat yogurt or anything else from the cow? Is that part of her carnivore scene? [50:45] Where does dark chocolate rank on the plant sensitivity scale? [52:20] When your diet consists of nutrient dense foods, it is easier to adhere to. [54:11] Although plenty has been said about eating too much protein, we’re finding it is not such a big deal. [55:37] To honor her year of carnivore experiment, Kate went on a 200-mile bike ride. She knew her body could do it without carbs. [57:07] How do we find Kate’s nutrition coaching service?
