What happens when a top sales leader turns inward, rewires her patterns, and reclaims her identity? The answer might surprise you. In this intimate episode of The Soul Fusion Podcast, Penny sits down with certified hypnotist and entrepreneur Tina Madsen for a powerful conversation on what it really takes to shift your identity, regulate your nervous system, and live from a place of presence—even in the chaos of parenting, ADHD, and building a life that actually feels good. Tina's journey is not just inspiring—it's a masterclass in resilience, self-leadership, and what happens when you finally learn how to work with your subconscious mind instead of against it. With a background as a former elite athlete and global sales leader (top 1% in her company), Tina knew how to perform. But it wasn't until she said yes to hypnosis that she learned how to be at ease in her body, mind, and life. And yes… something is shifting behind the scenes of the Soul Fusion world. There's more unfolding in this episode than just Tina's personal story.

Dr. Kathleen Nadeau is someone who I'd call one of the godmothers of ADHD in women. She was one of the first people to stand up to the medical establishment and say, “Yes, ADHD affects women and girls, and we need to do something about it.”She persisted against the gatekeepers who'd call her and her peers “ADHD wannabes,” responding to their dismissal by writing books, conducting research, and being fierce advocates. Dr. Nadeau is also one of my personal heroes, and someone I've looked up to for years. That's all to say: I'm very excited to share with you this week's episode of Hyperfocus. In this podcast episode, Dr. Natalie Lancer with Professor Almuth McDowall, Cara Langford Watts, Pippa Simou and Dr. Francoise Orlov, consider the multifaceted nature of neurodiversity coaching encompassing personal neurodiversity journeys, training, supervision and research. The speakers explore the challenges faced by neurodivergent individuals, particularly women with ADHD and/or autism, and stress the importance of creating inclusive coaching environments. They delve into the double empathy problem, ethical dilemmas, and practical strategies for support. We discuss: What is neurodivergence and how do neurodiversities show up in coaching? What value can coaching bring to neurodiverse individuals? How can coaches support creating inclusive environments for neurodiverse coaches? What are the challenges and positive developments in neurodiversity coaching? What are the limitations of traditional coaching models when considering neurodiversity? What is the ‘whole sphere' of neurodiversity and how does neurodiversity intersect with other marginalised identities? How can we best understand autistic women's experiences in the workplace? What are the misconceptions faced by women and girls with ADHD? How can coaching strategies support attendance and workplace inclusivity? What specific strategies and techniques can coaches employ when working with neurodivergent coachees? What are the ethical considerations in supporting neurodivergent individuals? Coaches who work with neurodivergent people can be neurotypical or neurodiverse themselves and we discuss the importance of understanding the individual needs and how to co-determine what kind of coach and approach would be best. Several years ago, Rhoberta Shaler, PhD, interviewed me on the topic of whether women with ADHD are at greater risk for entering into a relationship with a narcissist or toxic partner on her podcast “Save Your Sanity.” I have not done any qualitative research on the subject, but based on my experience as a psychotherapist and a coach, I have seen plenty of evidence that it may be true. I was contemplating recording a solo episode on the topic when I learned that Dr Shaler passed away unexpectedly in April 2024. So, instead of recording something on my own, I decided to share the best parts of the original interview on her show in honor of her important work. In this episode, Dr Shaler and I explore how women with ADHD, who tend to be quite intuitive often miss the warning signs that the person they are involved is a narcissist. We unpack everything from the addictive allure of unpredictable partners to the internalized shame that makes us more vulnerable to remain in unhealthy relationships. Our dialog offers a fresh perspective on the dopamine deficiency that drives us, insights on how rejection sensitivity, impulsivity, and the hidden brilliance of ADHD play a part in partner selection. If you have ever found yourself in a manipulative relationship, or questioned your self-worth, this conversation will provide the validation you need to seek out more information and healing. Mic Drop Moment: "I think we are born with a brain that is very intuitive because we can make connections between things and sense things that are maybe not self evident to others. So I believe that women with ADHD can sense the abnormality in the hijackle's approach in their behavior, in the inconsistencies between how they may behave at one time and then another, but we override our ability to lean into, to trust our instincts and our intuition because of the persistent self doubt and all the negative messages that we have internalized." Several years ago, Rhoberta Shaler, PhD, interviewed me on the topic of whether women with ADHD are at greater risk for entering into a relationship with a narcissist or toxic partner on her podcast “Save Your Sanity.” I have not done any qualitative research on the subject, but based on my experience as a psychotherapist and a coach, I have seen plenty of evidence that it may be true. Mic Drop Moment: "I believe that women with ADHD can sense the abnormality in the hijackal's behavior and the inconsistencies in how they behave, but we override our ability to trust our intuition because of our persistent self-doubt and all the negative messages that we have internalized." Imagine my surprise when I found my name at the center of a heated discussion on Reddit and it wasn't in the Super Healthy Hot Babes forum. No. It was the ADHD Women forum. What??My tips for a healthy habit loop sat at the top of a thread, and the responses? Women in tears, angry, and ready to throw fists.Listen, I think they had every reason to feel that way, and I love a push to learn more. *In walks guest and ADHD Expert Brooke Schnittman stage left*.Brooke is an awesome author, podcast host, entrepreneur and ADHD woman herself. She blew my mind and really changed how I will approach and understand people with ADHD from now on. And I'm not one to make bold claims (wait, yes, I am), and I think you will too.So let's get to the nitty gritty. Can ADHD women (or men or children) form healthy habits? Well yes. But Brooke explains that the need to form habits goes way beyond fitness or health goals, habits become crucial to an ADHD person's very basic needs. Okay, I will eat my words when I say that brushing your teeth isn't a chore. When it comes down to it, ADHD women rebel at the nearest sign of structure, but the truth is they need it to thrive. Structure, schedules, routines, microchanges, tools, rewards, medication—these are the mix bag of things ADHD women need to make things happen. But don't forget about the superpowers; people with ADHD have these internal processes and hyperfixations that can totally outdo us neurotypicals. It's a double edged sword.Tune in to hear how ADHD looks different based on your gender or age, common signs, and the accepted testing formats. And if you were listening to this episode and thinking, FINALLY SOMEONE UNDERSTANDS ME as you break down to your knees in answered prayer. Then, hey, this one was for you! Reach out to Brooke, reach out to a coach, find a way to get your life structured, and secure those habits in a way that helps you thrive. It's not as easy as brushing your teeth; it's as HARD as brushing your teeth, but you CAN do it. What's Inside:How does the habit loop work for people with ADHD?How does ADHD differ in women compared to men and children? How can people with ADHD structure their lives for better performance? What tools and supports are available to those with ADHD?Yes, I can say that after this experience, I can see how it may not be easy to brush your teeth or take a shower. In this episode, we cover:What internalized values have contributed to women with ADHD feeling like a failure, and how do we shake off cultural beliefs and gender roles that we do not subscribe to? ADHD moms have interest-wired brains: We talk about the impact of having our interests align with our children's and how much easier it is to connect with them when we aren't forcing ourselves to sit on the floor and engage in imaginative play. Hot topic of the day: "Does everyone have ADHD?" Spoiler alert: No! Buckle up for a good, old-fashioned rant on this dismissive belief. ADHD is a feminist issue. Period. Because of gender expectations, we were overlooked as children, and now that we are "failing" at the expectations of being an adult/mother/wife, our struggles become very real. Many women are diagnosed with anxiety instead of ADHD, and when they start receiving ADHD treatment, their anxiety symptoms are reduced. "Nobody knows your internal experience better than you do." It's very easy for women to dismiss our own intuition about what's going on with us, and we need to remember that we can trust our own authority. Leah gives us practical tips and hacks to tackle tasks that are NOT interesting to our ADHD brains so we can get things done: systems, off-loading, automation, and body doubling, to name a few. In part two of our conversation with Leah Barnes, we discuss ADHD and feminism, the curse of flying under the radar, having your symptoms dismissed, and second guessing your own intuition. Leah gives us strategies for staying on top of tasks with body doubling, tagging, automating, and off-loading chores that just aren't working. Most importantly, she reminds you that if you have ADHD, there is nothing wrong with you, and it isn't your fault! Leah is such a compassionate warrior and we are so grateful to have her as a resource.
