Over the past few months, women on TikTok have started to push back against the 'clean girl aesthetic'– claiming the lifestyle is unrealistic and the style is unflattering on most people. This, along with predictions from trend reporters and stylistic choices from new fashion and beauty campaigns, indicates that 'clean girl' is headed toward its demise. So we'll first cover how the 'clean girl aesthetic' became so popular, why it's always been controversial, and finish by exploring why we think this trend is on the way out and what's next for beauty. Nicola began her career as a business-management student at Nottingham Trent University, where her sponsored work program with the pharmacy chain Boots led to her becoming one of the company's youngest buyers. In 2011, she met Brandon Truaxe who would found and launch DECIEM in 2013, with Nicola serving as brand director. DECIEM was a skin-care company made up of 10 different brands, the most popular was ‘The Ordinary', which was launched in 2013. After Brandon's struggles with mental health crises, Nicola became DECIEM's Chief Executive in 2018. In this conversation Nicola and Steven discuss topics, such as: Managing an organisation through the Covid-19 pandemic Recovering from the death of a founder and honouring their memory Juggling pregnancy, motherhood and being a CEO Making a company feel more like a family than a business The skills she implements as a leader and CEO Follow Nicola: Instagram: https://bit.ly/3Cfhp01 Watch the episodes on Youtube - https://g2ul0.app.link/3kxINCANKsb My new book! Leadership can be learned, but some people are just born with the innate capacity to lead. Being a natural leader often has a, you know it when you see it quality. Instead of learning to become an effective leader, they have the instinctive ability to inspire others to follow their vision. The charisma of such leaders can have both a light and dark quality and Nicola Kilner, the Co-Founder and CEO of Deciem has had to navigate both. Nicola joins Kelly Kovack to discuss going through the incredible ups and very public downs, and how she has used empathy, honesty and radical transparency to build a formidable global brand, and a strategic exit to The Estée Lauder Companies. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
*Trigger Warning* Nicola Kilner is the co-founder and CEO of DECIEM, ‘the abnormal beauty company' and hub of science-backed beauty brands that pave the future for skincare. Part of the DECIEM family ‘The Ordinary' has taken the skincare world by storm, providing an evolving collection of clinical technologies and treatments at drugstore prices. In just 9 years DECIEM has completely revolutionised the beauty industry, its long-term mission to curate brands that educate and inform consumers about products best for their skin.Starting her career as a sponsored beauty buyer for Boots, Nicola is not short of corporate beauty exposure. As a CEO Nicola has navigated $2.2 billion-dollar sale to Estée Lauder, achieving nearly £500m in annual sales and in 2021 she made the Forbes 40 Under 40 list. She is also, much to my delight and surprise, one of my investors at TALA.In our heartfelt conversation Nicola and I discuss the extraordinary growth of DECIEM, her personal successes as a CEO and friendship with co-founder Brandon Truaxe who tragically passed in 2019. Today, with one product being reported to be sold every second, I delve into Nicola's story of success, heartbreak, and phenomenal business growth.Topics:• Early career and sponsorship from Boots• Building 10 brands at once and the fun of being a start-up• Co-founding and Nicola's close relationship with Brandon• Brandon's public mental health decline• Taking on new responsibilities: becoming a mother and becoming sole CEO• Phenomenal growth during COVID-19• Building an inclusive company, women in the workplace, flexible and remote working Hosted on Acast. Have a safe week everyone!About JackieJacquelyn started her career in Sustainability, Social Impact, and DE&I over 14 years ago, after gaining a degree from the University of Toronto in Environmental Resource Management, a degree Jacquelyn chose to explore after studying the environmental aspect of International Relations.Inspired by her surroundings – living by the old Imperial Oil office building in Toronto – Jacquelyn was driven to make an impact in an industry that arguably needed it most, and began managing large-scale oil projects. This path could have been deemed ‘untraditional' for someone in Environmental Studies where many would opt for non-profit, for Kankam the company was right, the impact would be greater. Starting out as a project coordinator, working alongside teams detailing the optimum environmental impact of various oil sands projects, named Environmental Impact assessments, she set out to make the meaningful change the industry so desperately needed.Driven for not only a curiosity of the environment but a yearning to do better for a lasting planet, Kankam set her sights on real estate, addressing ecological and social issues, whilst building future-proofing strategies in commercial and residential builds. As Jacquelyn continued to set out on a mission to do better within many industries she changed focus to aviation joining Air Canada, to manage environmental sustainability. Here Jacquelyn looked into ways to engage customers and industry on aviation's sustainable journey while focusing on many topics including plastic and reporting.Growing a team of emerging professionals and mentoring the younger generation on preserving our future, Jackie saw a huge opportunity to create a powerful and good impact within an industry ready to overhaul preconceptions of its sustainability practices. That brings us to today, where Jackie holds the position of Director, Sustainability and Social Impact at DECIEM. Jackie leads the overarching company initiatives towards doing good to our people, planet, and animals. Kankam's role develops, communicates, and executes the sustainability strategy across internal departments and external stakeholders, collaborating on all facets of the business and needs. She is passionate about diversity and inclusion, mental health and mentors young emerging professionals. In addition, Jacquelyn co-chairs the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion strategy alongside the VP of People. Together they set out to be an impactful voice and counsel, on behalf of the whole DECIEM family. Pushing to create a workplace environment idolised and considered by other companies around the world to do even better. Their work has been recognised by industry leaders, winning The Best Ethical Initiative for the Community and Family Funds, as well as the voting and protesting days available to the DECIEM family in the Marie Claire Sustainability Awards 2021. Jackie Kankam who is the Director of Sustainability and Social Impact at DECIEM, also known as the abnormal beauty company. Sustainability is by far one of the most relevant but also, sadly, misconstrued topics today. So you can see why I was curious to know what a Director of Sustainability for a beauty company actually does. Jackie answers exactly this question and how she got into sustainability work to begin with. We also talk about best practices when managing a team and aspects of culture at DECIEM which have allowed for her to feel supported in taking risks, and ultimately making an impact.

Nicola Kilner is the co-founder and CEO of Deciem, the umbrella of many major skincare brands, including the game-changing The Ordinary. In 2018, the company made global headlines when its founder, Brandon Truaxe, made a barrage of erratic social media posts while suffering from mental health issues, that lead to alcohol, drugs, and ultimately, his untimely death. The empire they had built quickly came crashing down. Nicola knew Brandon was genius, and was determined to continue on with his core mission and rebuild, and rebuild she certainly did. This episode is one of my favorites. We discuss the personal toll of experiencing not only someone you love, but your business partner struggle with mental health so publicly, what she did to rally her employees, why they won't ever pay influencers, the importance of branding, the vast scale of her responsibilities, and how she does it all while having two daughters. DECIEM has a strong focus on kindness and transparency. Despite their rapid growth, DECIEM's foundation and their relationship with their consumers are both unique and something they focus on every single day. DECIEM does not incentivize mass purchasing, but instead is driven by doing good and creating great products. They put people before profit and are led by their audience and distribution channels. Co-Founder and CEO, Nicola Kilner, speaks about the differences between The Ordinary and NIOD -- two skincare lines within our happy umbrella of brands. The massive beauty disruptor, DECIEM, was founded in 2013 by “the beauty world’s most exciting disruptor”, Brandon Truaxe, and co-CEO Nicola Kilner. From the beginning, they weren't like any other cosmetic company, they acted more like a startup incubator launching 10 brands in rapid succession. They were hugely successful, did everything in house, outstripped the competition and grew wildly popular brands like The Ordinary. What Nicola wasn’t prepared for, however, was Brandon’s very public struggles with his mental health in 2018, his death in 2019, and the devastating impact it all had on the company. “Ultimately, you can't help someone who doesn't want help.”In this heartfelt, honest, emotionally raw episode of Secret Leaders, Nicola shares her incredible entrepreneurial journey to date. “It was always just trying to get the balance between keeping DECIEM going and trying to be there for Brandon. And people tell you all the time, you just have to wait for the person to want help. It's such a difficult situation to be in, you just have to wait for them to reach rock bottom. But what if they never do or, in Brandon's case, it ultimately ended in the worst possible way.”From founding DECIEM with Brandon, to seeking investment, scaling the business up, and then what happened when Brandon’s mental health took a turn for the worse. After being fired by Brandon, to assuming control of the company once more, Nicola tells the DECIEM story, warts and all, ensuring that Brandon’s legacy lives on.“Brandon would want, you know, he taught us so much about family and being there for each other. So it was kind of, let's just put that back into practice now.”We chat about:Starting DECIEM with BrandonFunding DECIEM with Estee LauderWorking with Brandon before and during 2018Being fired and then regaining control of the companyCommunicating through a crisisLinks:Brandon TruaxeAvestanWant to receive our podcast on a weekly basis? When it comes to finding an effective adult acne treatment, you’ve likely tried every lotion, potion, and serum out there. But it also helps to get to the root of the problem. In other words, to really treat your adult acne, you may need to understand what causes it in the first place. Like most things in life, acne is not always completely in one’s control. There are, however, some key tips to keep in mind to prevent breakouts. In this week's podcast episode, Marni will be speaking with Prudvi Mohan Kaka, Chief Scientific Officer of DECIEM, The Abnormal Beauty Company. Deciem is arguably one of the most talked-about beauty companies in the industry. Prudvi joined DECIEM way back 2014 and was one of the pioneers. He has a degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences and an advanced degree in Biotechnology. Prudvi used this experience to bring a unique perspective to the beauty industry. He views skincare not just as luxury but a healthcare necessity. Listen as Prudvi debunks the misconceptions about adult acne, and talks about the science behind skincare formulations. (English version) In 2013, a Canadian young man, named Brandon Truaxe, launched The Hand Chemistry. He wanted to be a game changer in the beauty industry and indeed, he definitely was one of a kind. He was passionate with cosmetics and co-created Deciem, with Nicola Kilner, driven by that passion in everything he could undertake. Not a surprise he launched The Ordinary a few years later. Since he tragically passed away, early January 2019, Nicola Kilner, became CEO of the company. She explains all about the famous umbrella brand and the different brands, from The Ordinary to Niod. She tells us about Brandon's legacy and his absolute vision of what the beauty industry would become. We also talked about sustainability and what future will bring for the Abnormal Company. In episode thirty four of the Glow Journal podcast, host Gemma Watts sits down with Lottie Tomlinson, founder of Tanologist, and Lou Teasdale, the brand’s creative director. Lottie Tomlinson is the sister of One Direction’s Louis Tomlinson, and Lou Teasdale was the band’s hair and makeup artist from day one. Although Lou was reluctant, she hired Lottie to assist her on the band’s tour when Lottie was just 15, and so their friendship and working relationship was formed. Lottie and Lou have a really interesting take on fame and celebrity, given that their careers exploded amidst One Direction developing what can only be described as a cult following. This lead to the girls accruing a devoted fan base of their own, however, not content with resting on their laurels, the pair had longevity in mind. 2018 saw Lottie, a self confessed tanning addict, harness her passion for beauty and develop her own self tanning brand- Tanologist. Lottie and Lou had a combined 7 million followers at the time of recording, so of interest to me was HOW they’ve managed to translate those followers into Tanologist customers. The answer became abundantly clear as I spent time with them- before I’d even hit record. Lou is a wealth of business and branding wisdom and has a deep understanding of what it takes for a brand to have longevity, which is no mean feat in the age of Instagram. What struck me about Lottie is that her demeanour and her approach to business really reminded me a lot of Nicola Kilner, co-founder and CEO of Deciem- two women who are shattering the old abrasive business owner archetype and, instead, are choosing to run their businesses based on kindness and resilience, despite having been through literal hell over the last 18 months. Lottie and Lou are a delight, as charismatic and fun as they are intelligent, and I’ve been so looking forward to sharing this conversation with you all. In this conversation, Lottie and Lou discuss the rise of indie brands in the beauty space, the power of social media and how their time touring with One Direction taught them what it takes to build a brand. You can read this interview now at: glowjournal.com/Follow Tanologist on Instagram @tanologisttanFollow Lottie on Instagram @lottietomlinsonFollow Lou on Instagram @louteasdaleStay up to date with Gemma on Instagram at @gemkwatts and @glow.journal, or get in touch at hello@gemkwatts.com See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Nicola Kilner is the co-founder and CEO of Deciem, a skincare firm with 50 shops that is known for its tagline, ‘The abnormal beauty company.’ Kilner co-founded the company with Brandon Truaxe, launching 10 brands in 2013. But it was the firm’s eleventh brand, The Ordinary, which has been its most successful to date. In January 2019 – after a turbulent 2018, which included a very public struggle with mental-health issues – Truaxe was found dead. Kilner has spent the year helping the company follow through on Truaxe’s vision.
On today's episode I'm chatting with Nicola Kilner. Nicola is the co-founder and CEO of Deciem. Deciem is an umbrella brand, under which there are a number of wildly popular skincare brands, including cult favourite, The Ordinary. Nicola discusses her experience launching a radically different brand. Deciem launched with 10 skincare brands and continues to expand, launching new brands, and discontinuing others, which Nicola discusses. She also answers my biggest question: why The Ordinary products are priced so low, if they’re actually effective, and how all the brands under Deciem are so different. Nicola also discusses how Estee Lauder came to be a minority shareholder, how she dealt with tragedy when her Co-founder and former CEO of Deciem, Brandon Truaxe passed away, and successfully leading such a large team. This episode is a lesson in entrepreneurship which I’m sure you’ll all enjoy. In episode thirty of the Glow Journal podcast, host Gemma Watts sits down with Ava Matthews, co-founder of Ultra Violette. Ava and her Ultra Violette co-founder Bec Jefferd have been widely credited with “making sunscreen sexy.” It’s no surprise that Ava has become an industry trendsetter, given her upbringing- her father was a fashion photographer and her mother a fashion editor, meaning Michael Hutchence was at her third birthday party and that her mother once left one of Ava’s slumber parties early as she needed to dress one Kylie Minogue for Mardi Gras. Ava has worked in the beauty industry for upwards of 12 years, both locally and abroad for brands including Mecca Cosmetica and Rationale, so she entered into business ownership with a beauty education the likes of which I don’t think I’ve ever seen before. 2018 saw the launch of Ultra Violette, an SPF wardrobe that sold out in under 16 hours. Ava’s attitude reminds me of Deciem’s Nicola Kilner, who I spoke to in episode 29- these women understand that kindness is the way to lead a business. In this conversation, Ava discusses the pros and cons of launching a beauty business with a single category focus, the phone call from Napoleon Perdis that brought her all the way back to Australia from New York, and whether or not consumers are, at long last, embracing sun safety. In episode twenty nine of the Glow Journal podcast, host Gemma Watts sits down with Nicola Kilner, CEO and co-founder of Deciem. Nicola Kilner is a woman who has been through absolute hell, yet has somehow remained true to her personal values of kindness and empathy. Nicola began her career as a beauty buyer at Boots in the UK before meeting Brandon Truaxe, a man she describes as her family, a genius, and the best human being she has ever met. The year 2013 saw Brandon and Nicola launch Deciem, aptly dubbed The Abnormal Beauty Company and, in my opinion, the most influential beauty brand of the 21st century. 2016 saw Nicola and Brandon launch The Ordinary under the Deciem umbrella, a brand with what can only be described as a cult following. The aforementioned launch saw the company double its wholesale revenue in 2017, however those highs were followed by the lows of 2018- a year Nicola describes as “not a very kind year.” Brandon’s mental health and wellness began to rapidly decline. Nicola, then co-CEO was removed from the company, then brought back months later. October 2018 saw Brandon removed from the company, and in January of this year, he tragically passed away. I am in complete awe of Nicola. I was fortunate enough to host a Deciem event with her during her most recent trip to Australia, and in the time I spent with her I found myself so affected by her intelligence across both the beauty and business spaces, but also by her resilience, her kindness and her honesty. As she says in this interview, “The world now accepts that kindness can be the way to lead a business into the future.”In this conversation, Nicola shares just how Deciem has managed to move the beauty industry forward through transparency and innovation, the legacy Brandon has left behind and how Nicola is ensuring she lives and works by her own values every day. We are deeply saddened by the untimely passing of Brandon Truaxe, founder of Deciem and The Ordinary. We sat down with Brandon in January of 2018 - when he was at the top of his game, making headlines and mystifying the competition- and we are re-releasing this episode as a tribute to his creative genius within the beauty industry and beyond. As evidenced in this episode, Brandon was funny, brilliant and sensitive, and he will be missed. We thank you for listening. Brandon’s genius was that he was radically transparent and it earned him a lot of respect and trust with beauty consumers. When The Ordinary launched in 2016, never before had such incredible formulations, centred around hero ingredients like vitamin C and retinol, been delivered in chic, no-frills packaging at rock-bottom prices. When we asked him about this blockbuster, budget-friendly creation de-throning prestige skincare 10 times its price, he said: “There’s nothing luxurious about being taken for an idiot.” The products clearly resonated - some launches had 25,000 + people on the waitlist In a word, Brandon was an innovator. He had a passion for the beauty industry that was truly one of a kind. I mean, even the tagline for Deciem is “The Abnormal Beauty Company” - evidence that he never took himself too seriously. This mix of innovation and cheeky sense of humour that informed everything he did endeared him to legions of beauty fans. Rest in Peace, Brandon. Brandon Truaxe, the founder of Canadian skincare company Deciem, has died after a year-long public unravelling. He built 'The Abnormal Beauty Company' into a worldwide brand through a combination of radical pricing and social media marketing. But his increasingly erratic behaviour, documented on his company's Instagram account, ultimately cost him his position as CEO. Senior business reporter Aaron Saltzman takes us inside Truaxe's story.

In our latest, by-popular-demand episode, we bring you #Deciem mastermind Brandon Truaxe, who has shaken up the beauty world with his ‘Abnormal Beauty Company." In this episode, we unravel the origin story behind Deciem and The Ordinary. Brandon walks us through his zig-zag trajectory to bad boy fame, starting with his dramatic exit from a high school job, his first career path, and what led him to switch gears entirely before launching Deciem, the parent company of nine spin-off brands (and counting!) that include The Ordinary, NIOD, Hylamide, Fountain and more. Unplugged and completely unfiltered, Brandon reveals the real deal struggles behind beauty start ups, coming clean on the past companies he walked away from and who his friends and enemies are in business. And finally, learn which products have been “life-changing” to The Ordinary’s legions of fans, and what they can look forward to in helping to de-code which skincare regimen is right for them. We also got the scoop on two majorrr innovations that we can all look forward to next.
