He graduated from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi and the University of Ghana Business School in Agriculture Economics and a Masters in Business Administration, respectively. He is a Certified Digital Finance Expert from the Frankfurt School of Finance and Management. Highlights from the Show Festus started working about 3 years ago on the issue of people in Africa having enough financial protection for retirement or to protect their families, and penetration rates of traditional life insurance products are very low Africa has seen the adoption of mobile payments, even on feature phones instead of smart phones, but that's largely not moved into financial services spending so much as general consumption All of this lead him to co-found Figtech, which is a platform to manage your insurance protection Life insurance is sold by individuals in Africa, but these agents don't tend to stand behind or support the policies after they're sold, so consumers struggle with basic things like updating their address (which requires going to the insurance company's office to change it in person) There are changes needed in the insurance market and regulation of it to see more penetration of insurance Some regulators have been creating more flexible paths for startups and new players to enter the market and grow For example, creating digital distribution licenses They've also allowed for creation of microinsurance that comes along with or is embedded into other products, like insurance you get when you buy more airtime minutes for your mobile phone Figtech was part of the first regulator-organized startup competition three years ago, and that experience helped spark Festus to push to create an insurtech community in Ghana, starting InsurTech Ghana They've been working with other InsurTech communities around the world, and started the first ever InsurTech Ghana conference in 2023, which they're holding again this year Africa is where a lot of new ideas of coverage and ways to protect people are being developed, and we would be smart to foster and watch what's happening there as a source of possible future product innovation ideas for the global insurance market This episode is brought to you by The Future of Insurance book series (future-of-insurance.com) from Bryan Falchuk. South Korean and Thai credit markets are at the heart of our discussion today. Speaking of South Korea, the country has been scrambling to prevent a credit market meltdown from sparking broader contagion, after local corporate bonds suffered one of the most rapid sell-offs in the past three months.  More recently, South Korean insurer Heungkuk Life Insurance said it'll delay the buying back of perpetual bonds, citing unfavourable market conditions and the US Federal Reserve's hawkish stance.  That move triggered a perpetual bond rout in Asia. While Heungkuk Life has decided to reverse its earlier move to exercise a call option on its perpetual notes, we want to find out the outlook for South Korea's bond markets.  Closer to home, investors continue to watch Thailand's banking sector even as the country recovers from the troughs of the pandemic. That ALL Might Be Edified: Discussions on Servant Leadership

This week's guest is a great friend who I look up to like a big brother, Darren Lifferth. Darren teaches us through words, stories, and examples how important it is to be open to opportunities when they arise, even if the timing might feel off according to our plans. Darren highlights the importance of doing a gut check everyday to make sure you are moving in the right direction and focusing on the the right priorities. Darren shares some personal stories that illustrate how examples from his life have helped him become the servant leader he is today and how holding people accountable can be vital to serving them. We talked about an inspirational address from Elder Alvin Meredith III about how to look down the road to center ourselves and it showed even deeper how we are more connected than we realize. Darren shared his reason for choosing the path of international business so that he could help people become more connected and reliant on one another so there would be less conflict in the world.    Darren Lifferth is the Cat Card Business Excellence and International Business Development Manager for Cat Financial based in Nashville, Tennessee. He leads a cross functional team of project leaders, data scientists, and strategy experts on developing new business opportunities internationally. Darren has worked for Caterpillar for almost 20 years in a variety of positions and locations globally. He joined Caterpillar as a Credit Analyst after earning his bachelors degree in International Business Management from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. While in Nashville he took on additional responsibilities as a Customer Service Representative handling collections, loan modifications, repossessions, and reporting. Next he moved into a Documentation Analyst role followed by a Transaction Coordinator role supporting loan documentation creation, negotiation, and government filing of title documents. During these roles Darren spent considerable time working in Brazil. In 2007 he earned his MBA from Auburn University with an emphasis in Finance. From 2007 through 2013 he held sales roles in Florida as an International Account Manager and in Louisiana as a Senior International Account Manager. In 2013 he relocated his family to Singapore to lead the sales efforts as the Asia Pacific Sales Manager. In 2016 he transitioned into the Asia Pacific Marketing Manager. In both of these roles Darren was able to travel extensively throughout Asia to support customers and Caterpillar Dealers. In 2018 he moved his family to Bangkok, Thailand to become the Managing Director for Thailand managing all company operations for sales, credit, customer service, legal, compliance, HR, and reporting. During the start of the pandemic he moved his family back to Nashville, Tennessee where he transitioned in to the Business Excellence Manager for Cat Financial responsible for strategy development and governance, project management, 6 Sigma, Lean, data strategy development and governance, and company resource allocation. Darren's current responsibilities as the Cat Card Business Excellence and International Development Manager focus on growing business opportunities internationally.    Darren and Sarah were the first couple ever married at the Nashville Tennessee Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in May 2000 and they now have six children ranging in age from 6 to 20 years old. He loves all things outdoors like running, sports, hiking, canoeing, rock climbing, fishing, hunting, mountain biking, and sitting around a camp fire. Hobbies include cheering for UT, Auburn, TN Titans, and the New Orleans Saints, sewing outdoor gear like hammocks and backpacks, ham radios, 4x4 offroading, timing the stock market, keeping up with current events, traveling, and eating delicious food. Most of the time he's with his family on some adventure when he's not working.   Resources: Elder Alvin F. Heidi Craig's Near-Death Experience (NDE) occurred on May 29, 2004, after having her youngest son. She was 34 years old. Her heart stopped while she was in the OR and she “woke up” in heaven….or what she likes to call “home”. She says that there are no words to truly express the feelings of love, joy, peace, warmth and contentment that she experienced. She received three messages, over and over again. It is because of those messages that she wants to share her story and spread the messages of peace and love that she received. She experienced a lot of challenges since her NDE occurred, including getting divorced, being laid off three time within seven years, experiencing financial hardships, and at one point she thought that she was going to live out of her car. The gift of her NDE and the messages received helped her get through all those rough times. Heidi no longer fears death and she knows that we are one, we are connected, and that our souls live on. Heidi wrote a book of affirmations in December 2017 based on her NDE called “Messages from Heaven (The Little Book of Affirmations Based on the True of a Near Death Experience)”. Heidi's goal is to help at least one person. Heidi lives in Solvang and has three loving, healthy & handsome sons. She works as a Credit Analyst at a wireless speaker company in Santa Barbara. Join Duc and Steve, as we chat with Will Coleman about commercial real estate financing 101. Will is the Director of Finance at Rand Commercial Real Estate, helping investors find the best financing option for their commercial real estate deals. In this episode, he shares his pieces of advice on how to build a relationship with lenders, the advantages and disadvantages of hiring a mortgage broker, and more! Real Estate is a Relationship Business In real estate, your relationship with your team and clients is the foundation of your business. Every business opportunity and deal will revolve around people. And how well you get along with everyone is the key to the success of your business. Therefore, it is so essential that you not only invest in yourself but also in your network. This will open more doors of opportunities for you and can help your business survive a bad situation in the market. Make sure you value those relationships and do your best to nurture them. Every person will want to do business with someone they like, and if you handle these with care, you will have clients for life. Failure is an Opportunity to Improve Fail, reflect, and improve.  Successful people have a tremendous amount of failures hiding behind their success stories. Failures should not make you cower in fear, but on the contrary, make you feel more excited and become braver! How you reflect on your mistakes is important because this will affect how you think and handle situations. If you continuously see failing as an opportunity to grow, you will never really fail again. Even the wealthiest people in the world commit mistakes and have bad days; these experiences are vital to your success. If you deal with these circumstances wisely, it will set you apart from a lot of people who let it affect them negatively.
