Charles is vicar of St. Laurence, Catford, London and a trustee of "Art & Christianity Enquiry." He is on the editorial board of "Art & Christianity," and until recently a visiting scholar at Sarum College. Charles regularly contributes articles to books and magazines on art and spirituality, as well as lecturing in the UK and abroad. He is on the board of the UK branch of AICA (the International Association of Art Critics), and is chair of the Fabric Advisory Committee of Southwark Cathedral. In this conversation, Charles and I explored the relationship between contemporary art and faith, and how he balances his roles as a priest and art critic. We discussed the shared ground between art and religion, and the Trinity as a framework for interpreting art. We also examined the spiritual dimensions of still life paintings as a Western parallel to Eastern Orthodox icons, as well as the evolving relationship between churches and museums, the intersection of sacred and secular themes in contemporary art, and how viewers can find deeper connections with artworks in a distracted society.
Acute hearing loss can be an early sign of posterior circulation stroke, particularly in anterior inferior cerebellar artery (AICA) infarctions. However, hearing assessments are often overlooked due to the NIH Stroke Scale's focus on anterior strokes. Real-world data showed missed diagnoses of vascular events when hearing loss was not evaluated. Integrating portable audiometry into stroke protocols could improve diagnostic accuracy and lead to timely interventions.
The NAVigator this week offers a taste of the action from the Active Investment Company Alliance's 2024 Fall Roundtable, which was held on November 13 in New York City. Individual investor Jim Cohen discusses how consumers in closed-end funds are caught between activist "whales" and fund sponsors, wanting to hold funds to account to narrow discounts and improve management, but sometimes coming away with lesser results. Axel Merk, President and Chief Investment Officer at Merk Investments — manager of ASA Gold and Precious Metals Limited — discusses why gold has worked better as a geopolitical hedge but has been less successful as an inflation hedge. He adds that precious metals perform better in higher-rate environments, and he doesn't think the current round of rate cuts will go so far as to pose a problem for gold in the medium term.
Josh Duitz, Portfolio Manager for the Aberdeen Global Infrastructure Fund, took a break from the program at the Active Investment Company's Fall Roundtable in New York this week to discuss the state of infrastructure investing now that the presidential election has been decided and the policies of the second Trump Administration are becoming more clear. Duitz says that deregulation and lower corporate taxes will help certain freight, for example, balancing out initial concerns about how tariffs might impact demand. He also notes digs into renewable energy — which critics have said they expect the Trump Administration to hurt — noting that he expects demand to keep it rolling, with some of that demand also coming from the nation's increasing reliance on artificial intelligence.
John Cole Scott, President of Closed-End Fund Advisors and Chairman of the Active Investment Company Alliance, digs into his firm's data to break down a great three-month stretch for closed-end funds and business development companies. He says it was a period in which discounts narrowed dramatically and changed the opportunity set without it becoming overvalued or unattractive.

This episode is all about celebrating the accomplishment of Canadians having success with breeding cattle in the show ring in Canada and the United States! Each of the three parts were fun to record as the stories of winners and their contributions to programs I truly find hard to resist. From finding or breeding one to following it though to achieve the biggest dreams, its what we all chase. Wilbar Cattle Bryan and Tracey take us through their time with Conley Southpoint 8362. Their decision to purchase through showing and then now seeing the rewards of their efforts. I will always cheer for cattle to not only win in the show ring but to work in the real world where livelihoods are made on breeding decisions and quality cattle. INC Cattle Co A sweep of the first ever American National Speckle Park Show with Champion Female and Champion Bull. Born and raised, that feeling of knowing they are special, seeing your dreams playout and knowing your efforts and work even in the crappiest of moments all built up to this! Cay's Cattle/Serhineko Cattle Co SVY Mayfield 30H. Registration number 1 million in the AICA. Multiple times Grand Champion in 2022 in Edmonton and at Agribition. The Supreme Champion bull at Agribition. Denver National Champion. His first American semen offering selling in its entirety to one breeder for $140,000USD. It is interesting hearing both side. Finding the right one, breeding that one. Working on him, the team effort it takes. Putting an animal of that caliber in the right place at the right time with the max effort to look the right way. He also compares muni funds to BDCs and discusses how investors should size-up current risks in credit before ramping it up in their portfolio. Plus, he discusses AICA's upcoming Fall Roundtable in New York.

John Cole Scott, chief investment officer at Closed-End Fund Advisors -- the chairman of the Active Investment Company Alliance -- says that investors looking for the top sector bets in the new year will want to look at some of 2022's weakest areas, most notably real estate investment trusts 'REITs' and real assets. He also expects international bonds and more to be in the sweet spot. Scott gave his look-ahead for the closed-end fund industry for 2023, and it's a year when he suggests investors take more duration risk, tilt their equity portfolios toward value, dividend and international funds and expect to see discounts narrow and yields to fall, though the latter will be driven by some capital appreciation later in the year as the economy and market continue to digest inflation and more.

Mike Taggart of Taggart Fund Intelligence -- executive director of the Active Investment Company Alliance -- reviews the first-quarter results for closed-end funds, noting that discounts widened out during a rough period for the market, reaching a crossroads where investors are trying to decide now if the discount has hit a level low enough to represent a good risk premium and a buying opportunity. Taggart also discusses interval funds, the focus of an upcoming AICA educational event, and how the growth in the space is giving investors interesting opportunities in alternatives.

John Cole Scott, chief investment officer at Closed-End Fund Advisors and the chairman of the Active Investment Company Alliance, says that 20 investment firms have launched 30 new funds under the 'Closed-End Fund 2.0' format since 2019, and the results and opportunities are promising. While the new funds show an average discount over 7 percent, the new structure returns the funds to net asset value after 12 years, which means that some of these funds are long-term bargains right now; he names four of the 2.0 funds that look particularly attractive to him now.

Thomas DeCapo, a securities attorney with Skadden Arps who recently appeared at the AICA's Summer Summit, joined Chuck Jaffe to discuss control shares statues that critics have said will reduce activist challenges to closed-end funds. DeCapo says that the rules will protect investors, result in more closed-end funds bring brought to market and that it won't stop real activism -- where investors are looking for real change and improvement rather than boosting a price and grabbing a quick profit -- and he described the actions as consumer-friendly and democratic for small shareholders.

Grant Foster and I pick up where we left off, discussing connections between his work and J G Ballard's 1970 novel 'The Atrocity Exhibition'. Considering Ballard often referred to parallels with painters, it seems natural that an artist might return the gesture, drawing on this author to feed his own practice. In this episode, Grant talks about eternal life, use of the motif and painting as a sequence of gestures where reality is founded in the ideas which follow the forms.(Mixed Tapes is an introductory series recorded in lockdown with variations in audio quality.) Grant Foster selects 'The Atrocity Exhibition' by J G Ballard, first published by Jonathan Cape UK, 1970. Both artist and writer embrace in equal measure the freedom, fear and disappointment that results from the individual being a fragmented composition, vulnerable to manipulation and capable of dynamic reconfiguration. In hope and despair, Grant points out that there is the possibility that 'true form' can be found 'beneath the lie; beneath the sludge'. We discuss in detail, works from his exhibitions at Tintype, Lychee One and Transition Galleries, as well as the ideas, concerns and formal observations which shape his paintings.(Mixed Tapes is an introductory series recorded in lockdown with variations in audio quality.)

Professor Ades talks about how contemporary practices engage with the History of Art. Audio recording of an event at Tate Britain.
Background Vestibular paroxysmia (VP) is defined as neurovascular compression (NVC) syndrome of the eighth cranial nerve (N.VIII). The aim was to assess the sensitivity and specificity of MRI and the significance of audiovestibular testing in the diagnosis of VP. Methods 20 VP patients and, for control, 20 subjects with trigeminal neuralgia (TN) were included and underwent MRI (constructive interference in steady-state, time-of-flight MR angiography) for detection of a NVC between N.VIII and vessels. All VP patients received detailed audiovestibular testing. Results A NVC of N. VIII could be detected in all VP patients rendering a sensitivity of 100% and a specificity of 65% for the diagnosis of VP by MRI. Distance between brain stem and compressing vessels varied between 0.0 and 10.2 mm. In 15 cases, the compressing vessel was the anterior inferior cerebellar artery (75%, AICA), the posterior inferior cerebellar artery in one (5%, posterior inferior cerebellar artery (PICA)), a vein in two (10%) and the vertebral artery (10%, VA) in another two cases. Audiovestibular testing revealed normal results in five patients (25%), a clear unilateral loss of audiovestibular function in nine patients (45%) and audiovestibular results with coinstantaneous signs of reduced and increased function within the same nerve in six patients (30%). From the 20 TN patients 7, (35%) showed a NVC of the N. VIII (5 AICA, 1 PICA, 1 vein). Conclusions Only the combination of clinical examination, neurophysiological and imaging techniques is capable of (1) defining the affected side of a NVC and to (2) differentiate between a deficit syndrome and increased excitability in VP.
