Wine brings pleasure. But for some it can also prove painful. Red wine is particularly problematic for a proportion of the population, with just a few mouthfuls bringing on swift and excruciating headaches. Now scientists think they may finally be on to why. In lab experiments, they've identified a compound in red wine that impedes the breakdown of alcohol by the liver and causes a build-up of toxic acetaldehyde in the bloodstream. Human trials are still needed for confirmation - but these are exciting findings. In this episode, we discuss these results with the scientists behind them: Professor Andrew Waterhouse and Dr Apramita Devi from the University of California, Davis. As for the BIG question - which red wines might be safer for sufferers - there's good news. The experts actually recommend cheap rather than pricey red wines. Yes, you read that right: the boffins are endorsing the bargains! We explain why as well as providing some top tips for bargain basement reds - we also touch on the tantalising prospect of how this research may help us understand hangovers too.A final note: research like this costs money and yet neither governments nor big companies want to fund it (a crying shame). As a result, the team at UC Davis has launched a Crowdfunder. If you'd like to contribute, or find out more, click here: Red Wine Headaches ProjectThanks for tuning in. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Reconsider the anti-cavity bacteria if you are Asian, published by Lao Mein on April 15, 2024 on LessWrong. Many people in the rational sphere have been promoting Lumina/BCS3-L1, a genetically engineered bacterium, as an anti-cavity treatment. However, none have brought up a major negative interaction that may occur with a common genetic mutation. In short, the treatment works by replacing lactic acid generating bacteria in the mouth with ones that instead convert sugars to ethanol, among other changes. Scott Alexander made a pretty good FAQ about this. Lactic acid results in cavities and teeth demineralization, while ethanol does not. I think this is a really cool idea, and would definitely try it if I didn't think it would significantly increase my chances of getting oral cancer. Why would that be? Well, I, like around half of East Asians, have a mutation in my acetaldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) which results in it being considerably less active. This is known as Asian/Alcohol Flush Reaction (AFR). This results in decreased ability to metabolize acetaldehyde to acetate and consequently a much higher level of acetaldehyde when drinking alcohol. Although the time ingested ethanol spends in the mouth and stomach are quite short, alcohol dehydrogenase activity by both human and bacterial cells rises rapidly once the presence of ethanol is detected. Some studies have estimated that ~20% of consumed ethanol is converted to acetaldehyde in the mouth and stomach in a process called first pass metabolism. Normally, this is broken down into acetate by the ALDH also present, but it instead builds up in those with AFR. Acetaldehyde is a serious carcinogen and people with AFR have significantly higher levels of oral and stomach cancer (The odds ratios for Japanese alcoholics with the mutation in relation to various cancers are >10 (!!!) for oral and esophageal cancer). The Japanese paper also notes that all alcoholics tested only had a single copy of the mutation, since it is very difficult to become an alcoholic with two copies (imagine being on high dosage Antabuse your entire life - that's the same physiological effect). In addition, there is also the potential for change in oral flora and their resting ADH levels. As oral flora and epithelial cells adapt to a higher resting level of ethanol, they may make the convertion of ethanol to acetaldehyde even faster, resulting in higher peak oral and stomach levels of acetaldehyde during recreational drinking, thereby increasing cancer risk. There is also the concern of problems further down the digestive track - Japanese alcoholics with AFR also have increased (~3x) colorectal cancer rates, which may well be due to ethanol being fermented from sugars in the large intestines, but my research in that direction is limited and this article is getting too long. While others have argued that the resulting acetaldehyde levels would be too low to be a full body carcinogen (they make a similar calculation in regards to ethanol in this FAQ), my concern isn't systemic - it's local. AFR increases oral and throat cancer risks most of all, and the first pass metabolism studies imply that oral and gastral acetaldehyde are elevated far above levels found in the blood. As a thought experiment, consider that a few drops of concentrated sulfuric acid can damage your tongue even though an intraperitoneal (abdominal cavity) injection of the same would be harmless - high local concentrations matter! The same is true for concentration in time - the average pH of your tongue on that day would be quite normal, but a few seconds of contact with high concentrations of acid is enough to do damage. This is why I'm not convinced by calculations that show only a small overall increase in acetaldehyde levels in the average person. A few minutes of high oral aceta...

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Legalize butanol?, published by bhauth on December 21, 2023 on LessWrong. ethanol Alcoholic drinks are popular in most of the world. Excessive consumption of them is also a major public health problem. Bans have been attempted, sometimes successfully, sometimes unsuccessfully, but some people argue that alcohol plays a necessary role in social interactions. Alcoholic drinks contain ethanol, which is metabolized to acetaldehyde, which is metabolized to acetate. In cells, ethanol is mostly unreactive but can bind to receptors. Acetaldehyde reacts with lots of stuff, mostly reversibly but sometimes irreversibly. Small amounts of acetate are essentially irrelevant, mostly providing calories. Acetaldehyde can inactivate enzymes by causing crosslinking. Large amounts of it are generally bad. We can separate out the effects of ethanol itself and acetaldehyde by looking at people who metabolize acetaldehyde slowly. About 50% of people of Northeast Asian descent have a dominant mutation in their acetaldehyde dehydrogenase gene, making this enzyme less effective, which causes the alcohol flush reaction, also known as Asian flush syndrome. A similar mutation is found in about 5-10% of blond-haired blue-eyed people of Northern European descent. In these people, acetaldehyde accumulates after drinking alcohol, leading to symptoms of acetaldehyde poisoning, including the characteristic flushing of the skin and increased heart and respiration rates. Other symptoms can include severe abdominal and urinary tract cramping, hot and cold flashes, profuse sweating, and profound malaise. Individuals with deficient acetaldehyde dehydrogenase activity are far less likely to become alcoholics, but seem to be at a greater risk of liver damage, alcohol-induced asthma, and contracting cancers of the oro-pharynx and esophagus due to acetaldehyde overexposure. Wikipedia alternatives to ethanol Ethanol is what's in drinks because it's produced naturally by a common type of fermentation, it prevents growth of most harmful microbes, and the yeast produced has some nutritional value. But our modern industrial civilization is no longer bound by such prosaic concerns. Can we do better? ether Studies, including that of an ether addict in 2003, have shown that ether causes dependence; however, the only symptom observed was a will to consume more ether. No withdrawal symptoms were prevalent. Wikipedia Diethyl ether has the same direct effect as ethanol, but mostly isn't metabolized in the body. Some of it gets metabolized (by a monooxygenase) by oxidation to (ethanol + acetaldehyde), but more of it gets exhaled. Thus, it's similar to what ethanol without acetaldehyde production would be like. Diethyl ether isn't expensive to make, and there's lots of knowledge about its effects because it was widely consumed in the past. But it does have some problems: It's volatile and has a strong smell, so it's obnoxious to other people. It has fairly low water solubility, ~6%. Above 2% in air, it's inflammable. It's already been banned most places, and unbanning things might be harder than not banning them. butanol At sub-lethal doses, 1-butanol acts as a depressant of the central nervous system, similar to ethanol: one study in rats indicated that the intoxicating potency of 1-butanol is about 6 times higher than that of ethanol, possibly because of its slower transformation by alcohol dehydrogenase. Yeasts could be engineered to produce mostly butanol instead of ethanol, but the maximum practical concentration from fermentation is low, ~1%. Do You Need A Liver Cleanse?Fatty liver disease is the most common reason for liver transplantation. Fatty liver disease replaced alcoholic liver disease a decade ago.The rise of obesity has contributed to fatty liver disease, and fat, like alcohol, is deadly to your liver. So can you clean out your liver? Simple answer - no. But that doesn't stop the world from making dubious claims.History of Liver ScamsThe most famous was Carter's Little Liver pills. They promised to increase the flow of bile in the liver. This would rid the body of toxins.Even when it was marketed in 1868, it was known as a "patent" medicine. Thus a medicine without merit was sold by quacks. In 1959, the name was changed to "Carter's Little Pills." The FDA, in 1951, filed suit that the pills had nothing to do with the liver. The phrase "Someone has more (fill in the blank) than Carter has pills" comes from this product. The Master CleanserStanley Burroughs, a lumber salesman, invented the "master" liver cleanse. The formula was tea or lemonade with cayenne pepper and maple syrup. There was no clinical data this ever worked. In spite of the lack of evidence, it continues to be recycled in the pseudoscience world.Burroughs first published the book in 1946, "The Master Cleanse," and re-released it in 1976 under the title "The Master Cleanser".Burroughs was convicted of manslaughter in California and fined for practicing medicine without a license. This "juice" or "liver cleanse" or liver detoxification program keeps coming around with different ingredients. Some of the latest include olive oil.Gallbladder FlushThe gallbladder flush is the same formula. People will defecate small round balls of fecal material. Then they are told that these represent gallbladder stones, but they are not. Thus, the flush is useless. The Liver's JobAll the blood from the stomach and small bowel is filtered through the liver. Hence, the liver can be considered a filter.Once the food you eat is broken down and digested by the gut, those nutrients go to the liver. Then the liver determines if you need to use the nutrients, store the nutrients, or get rid of the nutrients. The liver gets the first pass at the medicines you take. Many medicines require the liver to process them to be effective. Those drugs are called "pro-drugs." Aspirin, for example, is a drug whose active ingredient is salicylic acid.Liver and AlcoholThe liver can also take harmful substances and render them harmless. In spite of the liver's ability to deactivate harmful products, a person can overcome the liver's ability to detoxify substances. The classic case is alcohol.Once alcohol is ingested, the liver begins to change it into acetaldehyde. Acetaldehyde is both toxic to the liver and responsible for most hangovers. Acetaldehyde is metabolized into harmless products. If a person consumes more alcohol than the liver can metabolize, they will become intoxicated. In addition, they will develop both acute fatty liver and chronic fatty liver. A fatty liver can lead to cirrhosis and liver failure.Milk Thistle and The LiverSince there are multiple complex metabolic pathways in the liver, there is no one agent that will fix the liver.Supplements touted to help the liver include:Milk Thistle. The active ingredient is silymarin. Silymarin has been extensively studied in alcoholic liver disease, fatty liver disease, hepatitis, Tylenol poisoning, and...

Erythritol and Heart Attacks: Is It Hype?Does the artificial sweetener erythritol increase the risk of heart attacks? In fact, some say that this is just hype. The article abstract can be found here.Erythritol is an artificial sweetenerIt has been used for years in food as a "non-nutritive sweetener." Erythritol is used in many processed foods, replacing the calories from sugar. The Food and Drug Administration considers erythritol a food additive (GRAS). As a food additive, erythritol has never been tested for its toxicity or long-term use.The case for artificial sweetenersWhile artificial sweeteners decrease calories, do they decrease obesity? They have been shown to decrease obesity among teenagers (ref here). By reducing calories, it seems obvious that obesity would decrease. And yet, this has not been a consistent resultA study showed that increased erythritol led to increased obesity. And that was just the erythritol your body makes. But your body makes erythritolSince your body makes erythritol. Does that mean it must be safe? The human body produces many toxic substances. For example, formaldehyde. Humans produce about 1.5 ounces of formaldehyde a day.Acetaldehyde is a breakdown product of ethanol. Drink too much alcohol, and you will produce enough acetaldehyde to kill you.The case against artificial sweetenersThere have been a number of peer-reviewed journal articles showing that artificial sweeteners have adverse consequences:Weight gain and obesity (ref)Insulin resistance (ref)Type 2 Diabetes (ref)Stroke, heart disease, and all-cause mortality (ref)Increased heart deaths in women (ref)How much we makeWe have about ten micromoles per liter of blood. That would be the baseline level. Blood levels with 1000 times as much erythritol are found in people who consume it as a sweetener. One study showed that erythritol led to improved blood vessel function after drinking erythritol for a month (ref). But this was in healthy young adults. What about people with underlying heart disease? It's not hype - the studyThe Erythritol study was done by the highly regarded Cleveland Clinic and published in the journal Nature Medicine. It was peer-reviewed, meaning many other scientists looked at that data and concluded the study was worthy of being included in this prestigious journal. What this study examined was the correlation of erythritol with people prone to heart disease. They studied people at risk for heart disease. Such as those with high blood cholesterol, diabetes, obesity, or hypertension. They looked at the blood levels of erythritol. Data divided the patients according to how much erythritol was in their blood. What they found was that those with the highest levels of erythritol had the highest incidence of heart disease, strokes, and cardiac...

Today on the Woman's Doctor, I wanted to share just how impactful, sobriety has been on my physical and mental well being. Dry January is a great exercise to test out an alcohol free lifestyle so that you can check in and understand exactly what role alcohol is playing in your life. Even light social drinking can have dramatic effects on your daily life that you may not be conscious of.   In this episode, I will first be reviewing some of the negative side effects that are commonly associated with any alcohol consumption. Everyone knows the awful feeling of a hangover but we never talk about exactly why alcohol has such a dramatic effect on our basic functions.  Alcohol is a diuretic which is why hydration is the first thing to go. Once our bodies process alcohol, it produces the toxin acetaldehyde, which damages your DNA and prevents it from repairing. In the gut, alcohol literally kills off the healthy bacteria, so even one drink can upset the balance of your microbiome. These are just a few things that we accept as normal sacrifices for the enjoyment of alcohol.    My experience with sobriety has brought me a feeling of peace that I was hoping alcohol would provide for me. What are the cardiovascular effects of propylene glycol and vegetable glycerin (PG:VG) and saturated aldehydes used in electronic cigarettes? Guest Editor Loren Wold (The Ohio State University) interviews senior author Daniel Conklin (University of Louisville) and expert Mark Olfert (West Virginia University) about the latest study by Jin et al., which investigated the base liquid in E-cigarettes in the absence of nicotine and flavorings. Conklin and co-authors exposed male and female mice to the individual components of the E-cigarette aerosol cloud (PG:VG-derived aerosol, formaldehyde gas, acetaldehyde gas) and compared their results to filtered air. The authors found mice exposed to PG:VG and formaldehyde gas showed increased endothelial dysfunction, a key biomarker of chronic cardiovascular disease risk. The authors also found that female mice were more sensitive to each of the exposure conditions than male counterparts. Does this indicate that female mice are a sensitive and useful model for exposure to environmental inhalants? Do the authors think that heat-not-burn E-cigarettes may be an alternative to E-cigs using PG:VG base liquid? In this podcast, Dr. Berg talks about ways on how to get rid of a hangover. When you drink alcohol, it is mainly absorbed in the stomach and goes to the liver which has the enzyme called alcohol dehydrogenase, which breaks it down into two different compounds: 1. Acetaldehyde – “toxic byproduct” – 30x more toxic than alcohol. This is what creates the damage to the liver and into the rest of the body and it is giving the symptoms of alcohol. 2. Acetate (similar to vinegar) What can you do naturally to minimize the damage and quickly get rid of the side effects? • Vitamin B1 (Thiamine) – It helps neutralize the toxic chemical and it also helps balance out glutamine. • Take B1 before you go to bed and when you wake up to minimize the damage. • B1 protects the cell especially the mitochondria against oxidation. • Water – for the dehydration effect • Vitamin C in a whole food form • Leafy greens and cruciferous vegetables (Antioxidant) DATA Dr. Eric Berg DC Bio: Dr. Berg, 51 years of age is a chiropractor who specializes in weight loss through nutritional & natural methods. HOUR 1Avoiding the Summertime Blues-- Carolyn Dean MD ND  Summer may bring increased exposure to more than just the sun. Summer gives us longer days, BBQs, pool parties, campfires, more alcohol and sweet beverages, road trips with the car windows and top down, and home improvements. Harmless as they seem, these factors and more increase our exposure to multiple environmental toxins. One particular toxin that affects millions in the population is acetaldehyde. Acetaldehyde belongs to the larger chemical family of aldehydes, which are pervasive environmental toxins. The human body possesses enzymes that convert it to a less-harmful substance and therefore is protected from small exposures. However, acetaldehyde at toxic levels can make its way into the brain from sources such as alcohol consumption, breathing air contaminated with acetaldehyde from cigarette and other smoke, smog, vehicle and factory exhaust, synthetic fragrances and perhaps the most common of all, Candida sp. (yeast) overgrowth. Yes, for many women and their families, the exposure route to toxic acetaldehyde levels is through its production by the opportunistic yeast, Candida albicans. In small numbers, this yeast may be kept in check in the gut by the immune system and friendly bacteria. But in many adults and children, increasing carbohydrates, especially sweets, will cause chronic Candidiasis. Candida produces acetaldehyde in the GI tract by sugar fermentation. The typical American diet along with drug and antibiotic therapies, hypochlorhydria (low stomach acid), chronic stress, environmental toxins, etc. have altered gut integrity and immunity and predisposed millions of people to yeast overgrowth or “Yeast Overgrowth Syndrome.” A person with this condition who also drinks beer, wine or liqueurs not only produces acetaldehyde from the alcohol but also delivers more sugar for yeast production of acetaldehyde, creating a double-barreled dose. Many people with yeast say that they can’t tolerate alcohol. Acetaldehyde produced in the gut can eventually reach more parts of the body, flooding the system and increasing the risk for damage.   Acetaldehyde is created in measurable amounts when yeast overgrows in the intestines. I’ve talked about the damage caused by acetaldehyde for decades and listed yeast overgrowth and mineral deficiency as the main factors in chronic disease. Even though more people are catching on and acknowledging the effects of yeast overgrowth, they don’t understand how deep the problem goes. To recap, acetaldehyde is a toxic byproduct of not just yeast but also of alcohol, car exhaust, and cigarette smoke. I’ve written about it extensively in my eBook, ReSet The Yeast Connection. Following this program will reduce yeast overgrowth and the damage caused by its 178 toxins, one of which is acetaldehyde. Part of that program includes taking ReMag because magnesium empowers aldehyde dehydrogenase to help breakdown and eliminate acetaldehyde. Molybdenum, found in our ReMyte, is also an acetaldehyde buster. Most important is ReAline with its sulfur amino acids that mobilize the sulfur detoxification pathways and methylated B vitamins that drive the methyl detoxification pathways. I don’t wish to encourage you to drink alcohol, especially if you suffer from yeast overgrowth but we have many reports from our customers that ReAline metabolizes alcohol to the point of not triggering blood alcohol levels on a breathalyzer. Supplementation with our Completement Formulas offers an important level of prevention and protection from toxicity. Tonight, please join me on my weekly call-in talk radio show when we will talk more Avoiding the Summertime Blues - along with a wide range of other health topics and clinically recommended nutritional assets to support your body. Don’t Feed the Candida !!! Part One Welcome to the podcast Fibromyalgia Real Solutions with Amanda Love. You are listening to episode 6. By the way, you can listen to this podcast wherever you are in the world and at any time that you wish. I always include show notes for those with “ brain fog” so you don’t have to take notes. If you missed my previous episode on Immune health then you may want to listen to it before this one. I do believe that there is a lot of information both good and bad out there about fibromyalgia . As an educator who specializes in this area, I think it is my job to point out to you that beneficial information can be organized in a fashion that will reduce the symptoms of this malady. My name is Amanda Elise Love and I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia 9 years ago which influenced my decision to enter the field of nutrition and now I am a Registered Holistic Nutritionist who works with those who are suffering from fibromyalgia. Today we are going to explore the world of Candida and its impact on your general health. Candida is a yeast, which is a form of fungus. Yeasts are everywhere, on your skin, in your mouth, and in your gut and also in your reproductive parts especially thriving in warm dark moist places. As you probably know, yeasts are present in many of the things we love to eat such as bread, cheese, wine, pastries, and carbohydrates. Yeasts are fungi that usually live in balance within our bodies ecosystem. The Candida Albicans strain is a fungus that only becomes problematic when it starts to grow out of control competing with the good bacteria for resources. When a person has an overgrowth of candida albicans the condition is known as Candidiasis. The Candida albicans strain exists peacefully with bacteria that produce acid in the gut where the pH is kept low which helps keep fungal infections at bay. But what causes it to go haywire? What about the pH of our bodies? Ordinarily, our bodies like to exist around a normal pH of 7.4. However, certain areas tend to be more acid such as the gut and vaigna. If these areas become more alkaline then Candida will grow and begin to process more sugars. This process creates byproducts that are called mycotoxins which have the potential to change body tissues and can make you sick. These mycotoxins produced by an overgrowth of Candida disrupt cell communication and confuse the body. Many scientists believe that this interruption of cell communication is responsible for many autoimmune conditions. One by-product produced by Candida processing sugars is acetaldehyde which can be toxic. This is one of the same byproducts made when your liver breaks down alcohol. Acetaldehyde can create a deficiency in vitamin B- One which contributes to brain fog, irritability, sugar cravings and depression which is why those with Candida overgrowth can feel like they are constantly hungover. In small numbers, this yeast may be kept in check in the gut by the immune system and friendly bacteria such as Lactobacillus sp. and Bifidobacterium sp. But in many adults and children, increasing carbohydrates, especially sweets, will cause chronic Candidiasis. Candida produces acetaldehyde in the GI tract by sugar fermentation. The typical American diet along with drug and antibiotic therapies, hypochlorhydria (low stomach acid), chronic stress, environmental toxins, etc. have altered gut integrity and immunity and predisposed millions of people to yeast overgrowth or the “Candida Syndrome.” A person with this condition who also drinks beer, wine or liqueurs not only produces acetaldehyde from the alcohol but also delivers more sugar for yeast production of acetaldehyde, creating a double-barreled dose. Acetaldehyde produced in the gut can eventually reach more parts of the body, flooding the system and increasing the risk of damage. Acetaldehyde toxicity can be acute or chronic. In order to stop this toxicity, levels of key nutrients that metabolize and clear acetaldehyde must be adequate. Some of these nutrients are cofactors to the enzymes that metabolize acetaldehyde and others, such as sulfur-containing compounds, are necessary to scavenge or “mop up” any stray un-metabolized acetaldehyde. Supplementation with specific nutrients offers an important level of prevention and protection from toxicity. Tonight on Live with Dr. Carolyn Dean we will be talking about Acetaldehyde Toxicity - Avoiding the Summertime Blues and the nutrients you can use to your benefit to lower your risk of chronic exposure to this all-too-familiar toxin. Summer may bring increased exposure to more than just the sun. Summer gives us longer days, BBQs, pool parties, campfires, more alcohol, and sweet beverages, road trips with the car windows and top-down, and home improvements. So, I’m thrilled that Dr. Darren Schmidt is here today to explain all there is to know about lactic acidosis. Do you know that diet is a significant part of the treatment? Read on to find out how. Early Exposure                                                       Dr. Darren Schmidt says he didn’t have a moment in his career where he went from conventional to Holistic. Growing up on a commercial farm, Dr. Darren Schmidt started working there when he was nine years old. But then Dr. Darren Schmidt also has vivid memories of following his dad around at the age of 6. He saw things related to spraying chemicals on fields wherein the bugs would grow back faster. He observed that something was amiss and knew at that time that his brain worked differently. Chiropractor School When Dr. Darren Schmidt was in college, he decided to go to a chiropractor school. Halfway through his schooling, he went to a seminar given by Dr. Joe Wallach. Attending the workshop apparently influenced his decision to become a chiropractor who focuses on nutrition. Dr. Darren Schmidt graduated in 1997. He practiced as a conventional chiropractor for a year but started studying nutrition way back in 1994 even before he started school. Dr. Darren Schmidt did multi-testing and supplements, as well as looking for a useful technique to treat people. He eventually found one in 2004. The method indeed helped figure out cases in the next ten to twelve years. Finding A Cure Dr. Darren Schmidt recalls experiencing heart palpitations in 2015. The pain worsened by early 2016. The next few months were spent finding the right treatment. One treatment involved having a machine to measure clogging in the artery as well as the health of the heart. Dr. Darren Schmidt claimed that his diet wasn’t the culprit. His diet consisted of real carbohydrates with no bread, sugar nor pasta. During this time, Dr. Darren Schmidt happened to come across some of his notes from a past seminar he attended a few years earlier. It involved some supplements and protocols for the heart. Dr. Darren Schmidt started taking them, and within two days, he knew he was on the right track. Dr. Darren Schmidt went back to the notes and started studying beriberi, which according to his notes, that’s what he had. He got books about it from bookstores, as well as University of Michigan’s historical medical library on beriberi. But after reading it, Dr. Darren Schmidt realized that it wasn’t his illness.   B Vitamins According to Dr. Darren Schmidt, medical nutrition books from way back 1940s already identified around 50 to 100 B vitamins. They would compress with each other to form different B vitamins. “It contains nutritional yeast and wheatgerms. That was one of the products that I took beginning 2016. It got me through the summer of 2016,” recalls Dr. Darren Schmidt. “During the summer, I felt worse during rainy days, and my pulse would go up. My pulse would be 130, then 120. Some days it would be below 80. The normal level is 60, and yet I felt I was still missing something.” Black Molds So many of us are caught unaware that being in a toxic environment puts us at risk for black molds.  Black molds can cause a variety of respiratory problems. Among the symptoms are chronic sneezing and coughing, eye irritation, persistent headaches and chronic fatigue.  “Molds will cause the formation of lactic acid, methane and carbon dioxide. When we have black mold in the body, it causes the blood to get dirty. There will be a deficiency of oxygen in the blood that makes the cell starve, and they die,” said Dr. Darren Schmidt. Causes Of Chronic Disease Dr. Darren Schmidt says the leading causes of chronic disease are those who have excess sugar metabolism, toxins whether it’s heavy metals or chemicals, and the third is hidden infections.  Hidden infections include fungus, parasites, and virus sitting in the lungs that cause asthma. He also says nutrient deficiency is likewise a factor.  “The reason why people get cold is when they have hypothyroidism. This is also the reason why muscle problems are so common with various diseases. It is a big missing link in all of healthcare,” said Dr. Darren Schmidt. Lactic Acidosis Dr. Darren Schmidt says lactic acidosis the most common mechanism of chronic disease. He also revealed that the Father of Holistic Psychiatry Dr. Abram Hoffer, even talked about it extensively primarily since it was what everyone was trying to fix. “Lactic acidosis technically means having a high amount of lipase in the blood. When you’re eating an excess amount of carbs, waste products forms. Lactate is one of them,” said Dr. Darren Schmidt. “The 75% lactate goes back into becoming a fuel. And 25% of it needs to be cleaned. It has to be cleaned by the liver and other cells.” But Dr. Darren Schmidt adds, if you are toxic and your organs aren’t working very well, the lactate will accumulate in the blood. And if you’re eating a lot of sugar despite your liver working well, you can still accumulate too much lactate in the blood. “There are three other waste products related to this. One of them is alcohol. Acetaldehyde which is the hangover feeling, and acetate,” said Dr. Darren Schmidt. “So, think of the hangover feeling when people overeat pasta. They feel bloated, brain fog and headache later on. That’s acetaldehyde from eating too many carbs.”  Cell Reaction Even if the lactate level is normal in the blood, the cells will have a hard time absorbing oxygen because the cells are still holding other toxins. When this happens, the cells have a decision to make, whether to turn to lactic acid fermentation or die. “Dr. Otto Warburg, the Father of Physiology, figured out how cells turn into cancer. It’s lactic acid fermentation. The cell uses lactate as their fuel. It’s an old physiological process that our cells used to do two billion years ago on the planet when there was no oxygen in the atmosphere,” Dr. Darren Schmidt said.  He adds, “The moment you add oxygen back in, the cells are supposed to go back to normal glycolysis and mitochondrial energy production which requires oxygen. But if the cells do not convert back to regular metabolism, even in the presence of oxygen, that’s cancer.” So apparently, that’s what Dr. Otto Warburg figured out. He got a Nobel Prize on how the B vitamins play a role in this. One solution to get well is taking B vitamins and supplements. The other solution is ketosis. Sugar levels will drop, ketones go up, and the body burns fat. Heart Matters The heart is a muscle. It’s beating all the time. It cannot stop and convert over to lactic acid fermentation, unlike other cells. Dr. Darren Schmidt reveals that usually in an autopsy, the doctor would report a clot that caused the heart attack. But in reality, it’s the lactic acidosis that killed a little bit of heart tissue, making the heart beat differently. “Holistic doctors specialize in thyroid, and it’s challenging because they’re not addressing lactic acidosis. Once you fix that up, the muscles start to become less painful and less crampy,” Dr. Darren Schmidt said. Muscle cells Dr. Darren Schmidt says the muscle cells are more likely to die rather than turn into cancer. So, what happens when muscle cells die? They tighten up. Two days later, muscles become lose because the muscle proteins have broken down. But then rigor mortis happens in your chest. That’s why people get angina and anxiety. “There are three locations for anxiety—stomach, chest, brain. The word anxiety means tightening or narrowing. So just imagine the muscle cells are tight and that it’s due to lactic acidosis. The muscles become narrow and tighten up, that’s why it is hard to breathe,” Dr. Darren Schmidt said.   Proper Diet Dr. Darren Schmidt confidently says a vegan diet cleans the blood. But he doesn’t know if it stops lactic acidosis formation. Dr. Darren Schmidt however, was quick to add that a plant-based diet is better than the standard American diet.  “The ketogenic diet was previously called the diet that mimics fasting. But I think the missing point here is that a lot of people think that a ketogenic diet is a high protein diet. Eggs, for example, are not ketogenic,” said Dr. Darren Schmidt. Dr. Darren Schmidt tells his students to get into a 2 to 1 ratio. Two grams of fat, versus 1 gram of protein plus carbs. That’s ketosis for most people. For those with a more severe condition, like heart disease, cancer, or diabetes, Dr. Darren Schmidt recommends going for a 3 to 1 or 4 to 1 ratio so they can have way more fat.  “So basically, you’re lifting the fat grams up. Your blood becomes steady, and sugar, as well as protein, goes down in the blood. Now the cells convert into burning fat because that’s the only fuel that they have,” Dr. Darren Schmidt said. Dr. Darren Schmidt says vegan doctors typically say that disease is caused by fat in the cells. They end up recommending eating a bunch of plants and no fat to clean the fat out of the cell. “What I’m saying is that you raise the fat way up high, still eat produce, and you get the same exact result. But I think it’s better because now you’re in ketosis and ketones kill cancer cells,” said Dr. Darren Schmidt. “And your body is now eating away excess pathological tissue. This is how I get rid of fibroids, cysts, and molds. Fat cells and tumors also get smaller.” Success Stories Dr. Darren Schmidt shares the has had seven patients reduce their cancer by doing ketosis and fixing lactic acidosis. Their diets are varied because everyone is different. Some can consume fruit, and some don’t. That’s why Dr. Darren Schmidt offers an individualized nutrition program to clients. White bread, white sugar, white flour products, and white rice are out. Another thing is that only meat that’s consistently ketogenic is pork vegan. According to Dr. Darren Schmidt, meat is not ketogenic. Dr. Darren Schmidt also offers muscle testing techniques which are a combination of several methods. But he says the bigger picture is knowing the physiology which he says is called Follow The Physiology technique. When you see the body is declining in health, you reverse engineer it and bring it back. Good Fat Company Dr. Darren Schmidt along with other colleagues currently offers an assorted line of products promoting good fats on a regular basis. One popular product is the Ketodamia Bar made from organic cacao butter along with other ingredients. Cacao butter has been proven to protect the heart from heart disease. Other notable products include banana nut bread and peanut butter dark chocolate.  There are more so go ahead and check out the website. Bio Dr. Darren Schmidt, D.C. has been in practice since 1997, immediately focusing on hardcore holistic nutrition, herbology, and homeopathy. He graduated from the National College of Chiropractic in Lombard, IL.  Dr. Darren Schmidt has been in Ann Arbor, Michigan since 2000 establishing one of the larger nutrition practices in the country with multiple practitioners of various licenses but the same purpose and similar techniques. He taught for a nutrition training company for eight years, teaching 77-weekend seminars on muscle testing, clinical nutrition, and healing protocols.  In January of 2016, Dr. Darren Schmidt was unknowingly chronically exposed to toxic black mold which caused life-threatening symptoms. After two days of taking nutritional products that were developed in 1934, he felt better and dove into the formulator’s articles to discover what he knew that was life-saving 82 years later.  What was discovered was Nutritional Deficiency Lactic Acidosis, the most common mechanism of chronic disease. It was commonly known by all doctors from 1920 through 1960, then forgotten.  Dr. Darren Schmidt also co-founded The Good Fat Company which makes the Good Fat Bar help people get into ketosis. He also co-founded Power Nutrition Practice, a training company for nutrition practitioners including clinical and business education. Get Connected With Dr. Darren Schmidt! In the next few minutes, I want to share with you the real cause of most food addictions. First let me tell you, they are not your fault. I've spent 7 years mentoring men and women throughout the world to shed excess fat and keep it off permanently. During this period, I made an astounding discovery about the common reason for almost all uncontrollable food cravings, as well as what you can do to end the suffering they can bring. First, a word of warning: What you will learn in the next few minutes may well blow your mind. Addictive eating makes you feel powerless. You've been taught to hate yourself for being “weak willed”. You feel at the mercy of some force that seems impossible to resist. So you go on and off slimming regimes, take diet pills, lose weight temporarily only to gain it back soon afterwards. OK. It's time to lay aside all your guilt, shame and self-criticism, as well as the fear that you have some kind of “emotional eating disorder.” To my amazement, what I have found out is this: an inability to control appetite no matter how hard you try is triggered by monstrous visitors from the underworld who have invaded your body. Food addictions, cravings, hopelessness and self-recrimination are the result of an overgrowth of Candida albicans. These are parasitic yeasts and fungi. These strange and powerful organisms feed on sugar as well as anything you eat that turns into sugar. This includes grains, cereals, fast foods, and convenience foods—all of which they thrive on. The goal of Candida is to control your body so they get their sugar fix. Next time you find yourself craving that piece of cake or reaching for a sugary drink, stop and remember this. It is not YOU who is craving that piece of cake or chocolate. It's the yeasty beasties who are after sugar in any form for their continued survival in your body. Amazing? It certainly amazed me to learn this fact. Then, I spent two years learning about the behavior of these darkly hidden organisms, whose numbers are legion, and discovering how to help you clear them from your body. More about this in a moment. When Candida invades your body en masse, it distorts brain functions and can produce endless miseries. It screws up your emotions. It can even undermine your sense of personal power, so that you don't feel you're in control of your life. The chemical products that Candida pours into your body through the fermentation process by which it lives and spreads contain high levels of ethanol—plain old alcohol. This is why there are many cases on record of people who do not drink alcohol, yet live in a state of drunkenness which alters thought patterns, disturbs consciousness and creates many emotional and physical disorders. When the alcohol produced by Candida begins to break down in your body, this produces acetaldehyde—a chemical six times more toxic to the brain than ethanol itself. Acetaldehyde insidiously interferes with brain functions, causing damage to neurological structures. Let me share with you just a few of the symptoms experts have connected with an overgrowth of Candida albicans: Weight gain Chronic fatigue from impaired metabolism Brain and nervous system dysfunction Self-blame, shame, guilt and fear Headaches Poor memory, fuzzy thinking, inebriation Heart problems—rapid pulse rate, palpitations Vaginitis and lack of bladder control—which can lead to frequent urination, itchy rashes and vaginal thrush Stomach troubles: diarrhea, bloating and gas, gastritis, gastric ulcers, constipation Allergic reactions of many kinds

Now we know it can do this with ease. Like every primitive microorganism, Candida has a powerful will to survive. It can breach normal defence systems to enter through skin and digestive tract, decrease the level of protective white blood cells, and invade the deep tissues of the body including the bloodstream. Medical tests for Candida are notoriously unreliable, and medical diagnosis of chronic Candidiasis is virtually impossible to make. Few physicians as yet even understand it. It is the body’s biological terrain that has to be restored to health for you to eliminate Candida from your system. This is what an effective anti-Candida program must do for you. Once this happens, all the addictive eating for which you have wrongly blamed yourself for causing is gone. The feeling of freedom and renewed self-esteem that this brings can be nothing less than life-changing. With the help of men and women whom I worked with on fat loss, I tested out dozens of anti-Candida supplements. In the process I found only one which I can recommend for everyone. It is low in cost and non-aggressive but highly effective. Now here is the catch. It takes time. Candida is so persistent that you must take 2 capsules of this nutritional supplement at lunch and two at dinner each and every day without fail, over a period of 3 to 6 months, to clear it from your system. During this period you must also stay away from convenience foods, breads, cereals and grains, all of which turn into sugar when you eat them. You need to increase the green vegetables that you eat and you must stay away from sugary fruits, fruit drinks, and sugar itself in any form. It can be a challenge. The good news is that, as Candida clears from your body, the increase in energy, wellbeing, self-confidence and loss of excess fat people experience brings with it an unparalleled experience of freedom and self-respect that is even hard to describe. One last word: Patience. Remember, it can take three or more months, taking 2 capsules of this supplement at lunch and at dinner each and every day without fail. The transformation this kind of clearing can bring about is well worth the effort.

It’s time to lay aside all your guilt, shame and self-criticism, as well as the fear that you have some kind of “emotional eating disorder.” To my amazement, what I have found out is this: an inability to control appetite no matter how hard you try is triggered by monstrous visitors from the underworld who have invaded your body. It’s the yeasty beasties who are after sugar in any form for their continued survival in your body. It can even undermine your sense of personal power, so that you don’t feel you’re in control of your life. Let me share with you just a few of the symptoms experts have connected with an overgrowth of Candida albicans: Weight gain Chronic fatigue from impaired metabolism Brain and nervous system dysfunction Self-blame, shame, guilt and fear Headaches Poor memory, fuzzy thinking, inebriation Heart problems—rapid pulse rate, palpitations Vaginitis and lack of bladder control—which can lead to frequent urination, itchy rashes and vaginal thrush Stomach troubles: diarrhea, bloating and gas, gastritis, gastric ulcers, constipation Allergic reactions of many kinds Until the past decade, few doctors believed that Candida could invade the body’s tissues.
