Episode NotesHave you ever wondered any of these: What the science is behind creativity? What causes creativity in the brain? What part of the brain is used in creativity? Or maybe even how to activate creativity in the brain? In this episode Kate speaks with Dr. Cheryl Arutt a clinical and forensic psychologist based in Los Angeles, California working with actors, writers, directors and showrunners supporting their psychological well-being. A specialist in trauma recovery, creativity and post-traumatic growth, Dr. Cheryl is currently Access Hollywood's go-to psychologist for trauma issues, a frequent psychological expert on many networks including CNN, HLN and DiscoveryID, and has been interviewed by the BBC and 20/20 Australia.  For more information about Dr. Cheryl please visit askdrcheryl.com, and for info about her online courses for creative artists please visit www.thecreativeresilience.comDr. Cheryl explains how creativity works and what it even is from a Brain Science Perspective. We talk about the link between education and creativity. I ask her if we are doing enough to foster creativity & creating thinking in the school system? And she gives us some actionable things we can do at home for ourselves and our children to rev our own creative engines. One of my favourite moments though, comes towards the end  when I ask her about the possibility of the opposite of inheriting generational trauma existing. We know we can inherit trauma but can we inherit magical wonderful things too? We shared a really tender moment - one where I felt like she was talking to ALL of us. It's beautiful, uplifting and inspiring.  I think you'll be really moved by it. What Dr. Cheryl Arutt & I talk about-What creativity IS from a brain science perspective. -What is really going on inside our psychology when people say “I'm not creative”-Why processing trauma including intergenerational trauma, and converting it to post traumatic growth is so important (and is absolutely possible)-The link between education and creativity. Are we fostering creativity and creating thinking enough in the school system? And if we are seeing that our children are not getting as much focus on creativity in school what can we do at home? -What is the one question you can ask yourself (or your kids) to kick start your creativity (what is another way to do that/look at that/solve that)-How the “we only use 10% of our brains” thing is a myth-How to use creativity to safely access our traumas -What is EMDR (eye movement and desensitization and reprocessing therapy how it was discovered and how creative people can use it to heal trauma and access even more of their innate creativity-Post traumatic growth - learning to integrate and recognize all the ways you grew as a person as a result of living through your trauma-What she thinks creativity is trying to do - from a brain science perspectiveAbout Dr. Cheryl AruttDr. Cheryl Arutt is an accomplished clinical and forensic psychologist based in Beverly Hills, CA whose amalgamation of rigorous training and experience allows her to engage with people from a place of deep insight and empathy. Through compassion, skill and sometimes even humor, she helps her patients uncover what is in the way of living a full-access life, empowering them to move forward.Following over 20 years as a working actor, Dr. Cheryl's interest in human behavior shifted to psychology after volunteering on a crisis line. A lifelong student of power dynamics and an ally for social justice, Dr. Cheryl taught courses to PhD and PsyD students at Allliant International University/CSPP, including: Intercultural Processes and Human Diversity, Sex Roles and Gender, Ethics and Clinical Interviewing.Dr. Cheryl Arutt - Clinical PsychologistAs a trauma specialist, Dr. Cheryl helps her patients understand how adaptations to the source of distress often outlive their usefulness and provides guidance and inspiration to navigate life from a place of wholeness. In continual pursuit of deepening her knowledge of trauma recovery and post-traumatic growth, Dr. Cheryl is devoted to continuing education in effective and evidence-based therapies, including EMDR therapy. A certified Rape and Domestic Violence counselor for decades, Dr. Cheryl also serves on the Board of the national victim's organization, PAVE, dedicated to shattering the silence of sexual violence.  Dr. Cheryl understands and supports the unique needs and challenges of creative artists and performers. In collaboration with Dr. Cheryl, actors, writers, showrunners, musicians and other creative professionals learn to thrive and clear obstacles to their success and happiness, both personally and professionally. She is a firm believer that the best way to protect the art is to protect the artist. In addition to working with people in private practice, Dr. Cheryl enjoys speaking to professional organizations, institutions of higher learning, at events and on television about creative resilience, post-traumatic growth, recovery from trauma and why people do what they do.  Dr. Cheryl Arutt: website | facebook | instagram | twitterKate Shepherd: art | website | instagram | twitterMorning Moon Nature Jewelry | website |  instagramCreative Genius Podcast | website | instagram Resources discussed in this episode:-Dan Siegel, MD-Dan Siegel's “Window of Tolerance”-EMDR Institute-Access Hollywood video about EMDR-Bessel van der Kolk, MD book: The Body Keeps the Score

In this first episode about dating, Ariel talks about the world of dating, which is even more different than it was even five years ago and there's some key information she wants to share to keep people safe, to help you stay prepared and help them do this process intentionally. If you're single, you're definitely going to want to listen to these shows because there's information in them that you may not be aware of and could make a huge difference in your life. Ariel's upcoming book is The Empowered Woman's Guide to Online Dating (see pre-order link, below.) "How Low Will Men with High Self-Esteem Go? Self-Esteem as a Moderator of Gender Differences in Minimum Relationship Standards," published in the journal Sex Roles in 2009 Make Me Smart Podcast: 52 percent women single census—Wells Fargo report. In 1900, only  7 percent of women were single. Tracked by the U.S. Census Bureau. There is a 20 percent increase in last decade of women who never married.  “Every choice you make is a trade-off against something else…that applies to any limited resource that you need to manage, like your time, your energy, your focus or your attention. And that opens up two questions: what matters most; and how do you align your decision-making around what matters most?” "Afford Anything: Build a Better Life," Podcast with Paula Pant. What You Need to Address BEFORE You Date: Avoid shutting down by saying, “Well I just won't date ever again,” You have to keep making an effort if you want to meet someone—just hone that effort and be specific and clear as you go through the process. Avoid getting depressed about your prospects.  Many things in life that are worthwhile are also challenging.  What beliefs do you have about how men should treat women? What beliefs do you have about how women should act in the dating process? What beliefs do you have about communication, respect, and being treated well? What beliefs do you have about monogamy, and do they still need to apply to you and your life? What is your tolerance for being rejected and resilience from recovering from that? What is your tolerance for needing to take time to sort through matches who do not fit? How persistent are you in making an effort to advocate for what you need and want? What is your self-esteem level like? What can you do to improve it? If you feel defensive at all when reading this book, what are you defending against? If you never give men a chance (after you have screen them first, of course), what are your fears of intimacy? Do you have fears about making changes in your life? If you are willing to take risks, evaluate that as well—dating can be very risky—make sure the risks are balanced and not endangering you or your children (like having a man you don't know showing up to your house). Are you willing to say “no” when you need to, or are you a people pleaser? What are your deeper feelings about men—do you carry resentment and negativity toward them?  Do you need to clear those feelings before you date? When you encounter men who treat you poorly, do you clear the negative energy you feel toward them before you engage with someone else, or are you allowing those feelings to build up inside you? What are your deeper feelings about yourself—your attractiveness, your worth, your ability to have a relationship? KEY TAKEAWAYS In 1900 only 7% of women were single, in 2020 52% of women are currently single. That's a significant jump in 120 years. And there's a 20% increase in the last decade of women who have never married. As single women in the 21st century, we have our own opinions, our own boundaries, our own money, our own success, our own jobs and our own decisions that we're making and a lot of times our own kids. Naturally that makes dating more challenging for us. Online dating used to be people matching up, having conversations and seeing if they could have a relationship. Now even on sites like eHarmony there are scammers, ghost profiles, and people looking for immediate sexual connection. If you're looking for a relationship you're going o have to screen very carefully, you'll have to ask very specific questions or pay attention to what those people are saying to you and how they say it so that you can be clear on who's looking for sex and who's looking for a relationship. Some things to address emotionally and mentally before you date include: Don't shut down and say I never want to date again because if you want to meet someone you're going to have to make an effort and put yourself out there. The more specific and clear you are about what you're looking for will make it smoother. Don't share your last name or details about your kids on a first date for security and safety purposes. It's important for you to know what kind of communication, respect or being treated well looks like. For me, being treated well means you hour my boundaries. If I say I'm interested in ‘x' but not in ‘y' and they keep pushing for ‘y', I'm not going to date that person, I want to be listened to, like most people do. BEST MOMENTS “I've (unfortunately) been doing online dating for about seven and a half years and I've talked to thousands of men, dealt with thousands of scammers and have been on over 130 dates.”“What matters most and how do you align your decision making around what matters most?”“People online have a lot less emotional sensitivity than they did when we used to meet in person. There are things that people say that are completely inappropriate or could be considered sexual harassment that they will say in a first sentence of a first contact.”“Dating, by its very nature, is a process of acceptance or rejection and most of the time it's rejection. You won't believe what people will reject you for.” ABOUT THE HOST Ariel is a Licensed Massage Therapist, Registered Clinical Hypnotherapist, Reiki Master, Empath and Psychic who has been involved in holistic healing since 1988. Deconstructing Disney

Episode SummaryErin and Rachel explore the mess of gender and culture in Mulan (1998), Disney's adaptation of an ancient Chinese legend. The plucky heroine promotes the “Girl Power” feminism that has fueled the female protagonists of most Disney Renaissance films, but does so in a way that manages to completely misrepresent Chinese culture and values. Spoiler alert: Chinese audiences did not love this movie. Episode BibliographyAbbott, J. (1998, June 21). FLORIDA ANIMATION STUDIO COMES OF AGE WITH MULAN. The Orlando Sentinel. Speak Up for Women New Zealand With Katrina Biggs & Suzanne Levy There are lots of times when sex doesn't matter, we encourage freedom of gender expression & want our children to grow up without narrow definitions of what it means to be a woman or a man. But sometimes sex really does matter, & this is where we are focused.   Our group includes teachers, academics, health professionals, care workers, activists, lawyers, retirees, students, mums, aunties, sisters, & daughters.  We are run entirely by volunteers & receive no public funds or funds from external organizations. We are not affiliated with any political party or religious organization. We would love to hear from anyone interested in supporting what we do. Speak Up for Women is a diverse group of women, but we have a set of core principles that we follow. These principles form the basis of how we represent our causes & who we partner. Women are adult human females; girls are human female children. Women & girls have the right to live free of violence, including sexual, physical, & emotional. Women & girls have the right to organize & gather in safe, sex-segregated spaces. Women & girls have the right to reproductive sovereignty. Women & girls have the right to live free from commercial sexual exploitation. Women & girls have the right to economic independence, pay equity, & living wages. Lesbians are exclusively same-sex attracted females & have the right to assert their same-sex attraction without facing harassment. ‘Sex' refers to the biological characteristics that distinguish males from females. Sex is immutable. ‘Gender' refers to the stereotyped roles, behaviors, & attributes that society at a given time considers appropriate for males & females. Katrina Biggs & Suzanne Levy Spokeswomen for “Speak Up for Women NZ” https://www.speakupforwomen.nz https://www.facebook.com/SpeakUp4WomenNZ Don't forget to Like Share Subscribe & Donate to Support Women's Voices in America & around the World. #WomensVoicesUnite on An American Conversation Podcast™.

Assolutamente no! In altri episodi ve ne ho parlato e continuerò a parlarvene. What causes creativity in the brain? What part of the brain is used in creativity? Or maybe even how to activate creativity in the brain? In this episode Kate speaks with Dr. Cheryl Arutt a clinical and forensic psychologist who co-hosts and is a regular member of the Behavior Bureau on HLN's panel show Dr. Drew On Call she often appears as a psychological expert on ABC, the Fox News Channel, HLN] and Tru TVs In Session - about her work as a creative psychologist in Hollywood working with actors, writers, directors and cinematographers supporting them to fully access themselves and fully ground themselves in order to express their creativity in a healthy way. Dr. The last time, Jewels was here we talked about her book, Making of a Woman. This time we talk about her life as a Fem Dom and sex.********My name is Jewels. I'm a woman who has lived two lives in one lifetime. The first part was a life of childhood abuse and trauma which grew into the full-blown disease of alcoholism. My life was out of control and I was circling the drain.  The second part is life today and how I urgently worked through my past and now have a wonderful life as a result. But my story is not your average girl gets sober story. I didn't just get sober. I created a life of truth and authenticity. My story is about removing the expectations and the dogma of society and instead of being guided by love and empathy.  Some may call my life risky, unethical, and totally against the norm. But I see it otherwise. I'm in a very loving open-minded marriage, I'm sexually liberated because of my childhood trauma, and I competed in the NPC North American Championships this year and placed third as a National Competitor.  I've always enjoyed the work of Gabby Bernstein, Oprah, and Wayne Dyer. I would love to see my book as supplemental reading in liberal arts classes, such as Women's and Sexuality Studies, or Adolescent and Teen Psychology. But ultimately my target audience is the girl in the back of the room who feels she's the only one. She's the person I desire to reach. Website: https://www.themakingofawoman.com YouTube: https://youtu.be/94zCgubB2Zk Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jewelsthemakingofawoman/ Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/makingofjewels/*******If you would like to contact the show about being a guest please email us at Dauna@bettertopodcast.comFollow us on Social MediaYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCX0ETs2wpOHbCuhUNr0XFTw?view_as=subscriberInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/author_d.m.needom/Twitter: https://twitter.com/DaunaD1Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/bettertopodcastwithdmneedomVideo of the interview is available here: https://youtu.be/vqnH8YXHLacHave a question or want to be a guest on the podcast email: dauna@bettertopodcast.comTo see upcoming guests click here: https://www.dmneedom.com/better-topodcastSupport the podcast here: https://www.patreon.com/bettertopodcastwithdmneedomSound Design and production by Rich Zei at Third Ear Audio Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thirdearaudioproductionsBuzzsprout: Affiliate link https://www.buzzsprout.com/?referrer_id=1832259©2022 Better To...Podcast with D. "BJ-Gay" reviewer's comment: - This paper claims to apply a combination of psychoanalysis and feminism to examine and critique styles of masculinity evident within grappling-based martial arts subcultures. Overall, I found the paper very difficult to read and cannot recommend it for publication. This is due to a combination of factors, namely: - A densely theoretical, often confusing style of prose in many parts of the paper; - An inconsistent application of theoretical concepts, most of which were not defined with any clarity for the reader; - Overuse of certain source material, as well as a fairly consistent tendency to misuse sources in support of claims that the papers/books in question do not actually support; - Many sweeping generalizations about (all) men involved in (all) grappling-based martial arts; - A tokenistic inclusion of discussions of women in these spaces, which was not reconciled with the analysis in any meaningful way; - A central thesis which is not, to my knowledge, supported by any of the empirical research in this area (despite the fact that several such studies were cited in the paper); - Bizarre, even farcical concluding recommendations which indicate a lack of knowledge about the martial arts in question, as well as a tenuous and selective grasp of feminism as applied to sport. - There is simply too much wrong with the paper to offer a more robust criticism as a reviewer. I recommend that the author spends far more time acquainting themselves with both the theoretical and empirical literature at the intersection of sport, martial arts and masculinity studies before attempting a re-write. The current offering sits far short of the standards of scholarship expected of academic publication, particularly in a journal such as Men and Masculinities. https://twitter.com/deonteleologist/status/1444709707864674306 https://twitter.com/deonteleologist/status/1402338497617285120 "The Joke's On You" reviewer comment: - Another sign of lack of integration is that there is not clear definition of the comedic. The very first paragraph offers one too narrow for the essay. Northrup Frye provides some useful definitions of irony, parody, and satire in his classic work, Anatomy of Criticism. Note, too, that Cynthia Willett, in Irony in the Age of Empire, shares a similar thesis with this essay, namely that irony works against arrogance and ignorance. That source should be acknowledged even as the author discusses her own different approach, and might help the author clarify definitions of the comedic and integrate argument. - Yet another sign of lack of integration are the mixed references from Oliver to Dotson, Bailey, et al.-- Oliver would support a strong postmodern or poststructuralist stance that would render claims to speak "truth" to power finally ironic or that would yield to a very serious act of witnessing alterity. The latter group of epistemologists (including Dotson and Bailey) seem to affirm a pluralism but also a truth that allows for objective claims. Humor that makes use of the latter approach would typically tend toward satire, not irony. Satire and irony just do not function the same way, and the author would want to decide which direction or use of them would most assist the argument. "Fat Body Builders" reviewer comment: - For instance, statements like these, “In order for fat to be seen as ordinary and familiar, we need to insert ourselves in the extraordinary and unfamiliar. Competitive bodybuilding venues may be unfamiliar, even intrinsically fat-exclusionary, but this can change” and “Though it goes beyond the scope of this paper to provide more specific methods for institutionalizing fat bodybuilding” illustrate the issue with the paper. The author has highlighted the negative implication of fat stigma, but with a lack of connection to implementation, it negates the reason for why fat bodybuilding is a solution over other means or methods. - This reader would encourage the author to improve the connection between fat bodybuilding and its role as a means of fat activism. The author certainly has a wealth of information about the field of bodybuilding and the author should use that experience to strengthen the connections mentioned previously. "Hooters" reviewer comment: - This then takes me to a core challenge in moving forward with your paper at Sex Roles: trustworthiness. All three reviewers share my concern about the lack of demonstrated methodological integrity in the present paper. This is where Reviewer 3 comes in. I recruited Reviewer 3 after the other reviewers, and because she is a member of our in-house staff, I shared both reviewers' (masked) comments with her. I asked her first if she felt there was enough evidence of rigor to pursue a revision. Because we (at this point) have incomplete methodological information, I cannot commit to making a positive judgment here, but I am committing to giving it a try. - Thus my second challenge to Reviewer 3 was to outline what next steps you will need to take (in addition to addressing the other reviewers' comments) to fill in these methodological gaps. As you can see from Reviewer 3's comments, this starts by laying out your procedural details and analytic strategy. My guess is that you will need to focus more specifically on theme development and justification (e.g., thematic analysis) rather than taking this aspect from grounded theory (in that your goal is not to develop theory). I have attached a recently published paper in Sex Roles by Sheryl Chatfield that lays out various approaches to qualitative methodologies and outlines our standards here at Sex Roles. My expectation is that Reviewer 3's comments and this paper will help you address this critical point, as well as to move one from there to fully flesh out your methods, analyses, and findings. "Dildos" reviewer comment: - In the opening sections, the author notes that "though Allan lays out psychoanalytic theoretical considerations that are strongly suggestive of the co-constitutive relationship between masculinity, thevariables listed above, and anality, currently there is no scholarly literature that engages the topic of straight male penetrative sex toy directly and substantively" (3). The author here is referring to Allan's article, "Phallic Affect," however, Allan's book, Reading from Behind: A Cultural Analysis of the Anus (2016) might prove to be more useful in the context of this study. - The author writes that "there exists a far more extensive and applicable treatment in the book, The Ultimate Guide to Prostate Pleasure, but unfortunately this insightful volumes falls considerably outside of the scholarly academic canon" (3). I'm not certain that this is a problem, perhaps this is a difference of approach, but it seems to me that sex manuals are highly valuable resources in scholarly work and if there is a problem that the problem rests not with The Ultimate Guide but the Academy's inability to imagine value outside of itself. Indeed, the author might consider expanding this to include books like, The Adventurous Couple's Guide to Strap-On Sex by Violet Blue. The chapter the hoaxers chose, not by coincidence, one of the least ideological and racist parts of Hitler's book. Chapter 12, probably written in April/May 1925, deals with how the newly refounded NSDAP should rebuild as a party and amplify its program. "According to their own account, the writers took parts of the chapter and inserted feminist "buzzwords"; they "significantly changed" the "original wording and intent” of the text to make the paper "publishable and about feminism." I realize this was necessary to the project, but could the author acknowledge/explain/justify this (arguably, anthropocentric) difference? Indicating that it was necessary to the research would suffice but at least the difference should be acknowledged." Nestor de Buen, Anti-Science Humping in the Dog Park. https://conceptualdisinformation.substack.com/p/anti-science-humping-in-the-dog-park "What is even more striking is that if the research had actually been conducted and the results showed what the paper says they show, there is absolutely no reason why it should not have been published. And moreover, what it proves is the opposite of what its intention is. It shows that one can make scientifically testable claims based on the conceptual framework of gender studies, and that the field has all the markings of a perfectly functional research programme." "Yes, the dog park paper is based on false data and, like Sokal's, contains a lot of unnecessary jargon, but it is not nonsense, and the distinction is far from trivial. Nonsense implies one cannot even obtain a truth value from a proposition. In fact, the paper being false, if anything, proves that it is not nonsense, yet the grievance hoaxers try to pass falsity as nonsense. Nonsense is something like Chomsky's famous sentence “colorless green ideas sleep furiously.” It is nonsense because it is impossible to decide how one might evaluate whether it is true. A false sentence would be “the moon is cubical.” It has a definite meaning, it just happens not to be true.  "So, if the original Sokal Hoax is like Chomsky's sentence, the dog park paper is much more like “the moon is cubical.” And in fact, a more accurate analogy would be “the moon is cubical and here is a picture that proves it,” and an attached doctored picture of the cubical moon." Reviewer 2 Comments on the Dog-Park Paper "I am a bit curious about your methodology. Can you say more? You describe your methods here (procedures for collecting data), but not really your overall approach to methodology. Did you just show up, observe, write copious notes, talk to people when necessary, and then leave? If so, it might be helpful to explicitly state this. It sounds to me like you did a kind of ethnography (methodology — maybe multispecies ethnography?) but that's not entirely clear here. Or are you drawing on qualitative methods in social behaviorism/symbolic interactionism? In either case, the methodology chosen should be a bit more clearly articulated." The Show Proem My father, a homosexual deep in the closet, died in 1972 at age 45 without coming out. I was 20. My  dad's brother never lived in the closet. When eight years old, I asked my uncle why he never married. ‘I'm homosexual.' OK, no big deal. That explained it—good information to have. Growing up, I knew I was different. I never approached being a jock. I had friends who were girls. I never played ball with my dad. He got manicures. I didn't understand masculine and feminine. In my first year of college in 1969, I took a course in Social Psychology of Sex Roles, opening my eyes to Women's Lib, my place and gender identity and introducing me to long-lasting friends and partners. Gravitational pull? Although I didn't yet know about my dad. On September 11th (yes, that 9/11), I met Michelle Horvath at a conference in Reno, NV. We both lived in upstate NY, and since we couldn't fly or rail home, we rented a car and drove home together. We bonded during those several days, became close friends. My boy, Mike Funk, died the following year. Michelle, her husband, and two children came to the memorial service.  Several years ago, Michelle told me that O was transitioning. We spoke about her love for her children and grief at losing a daughter. Michelle adjusted. O expressed an interest in recording a conversation for my podcast about transitioning. The northern flicker (Colaptes auratus) is a common bird that has some exceptionally uncommon behaviors. Unlike most bird species, male flickers take an equal share of egg incubation and feeding, and, in up to five percent of females, a lady flicker will take up with two mates - an older male and a younger male - raising young in two different nests at the same time. In addition, flickers will sometimes lay their eggs in the nests of other flickers, a behavior called intraspecific brood parasitism, another habit rarely seen in birds. Join the guys as they delve into studies exploring the wild and swinging world of northern flicker reproduction. This episode was recorded on May 11th, 2021 at Chestnut Ridge Park in Orchard Park, NY. Episode Notes:Bill fully realizes that he mispronounced monogamous as monogyoumous. He doesn’t know why he did this, but he is appropriately embarrassed about it. Bill and Steve were both amazed to learn that belted kingfishers nest in burrows. Find out more here.At one point in this episode, Bill wondered about all cavity nesting birds having pure white eggs. They do not, and this article provides a nice overview of egg coloration in cavity-nesting species.Around the 32:40 mark – Bill said that of the bird species that have biparental care, 90% have extra pair paternity (EPP), and, in describing it, he said that it occurs when a female mates with another male outside her pair bond, but, to be clear, both sexes can engage in EPP. Steve asked about their longevity. Some info from one of Dr. Wiebe’s studies: Flickers have a relatively fast life history with an annual apparent mortality rates of 60%. The rate doesn’t vary with age. A 2006 study looked at mortality rates of male and female flickers over a 6-yr period and observed only 1-2 birds out of every 300 adults were 7 or more years old. There was no significant differences between male and female survival rates for the general population. The oldest known flicker was 9 years, 2 months old. The New World blackbird family is Icteridae. Why are these birds called flickers? As best as we can tell from a quick google search, the name is another effort to mimic their call - flicka flicka flicka. Summary by author Charlotte: I believe that most of the female audiences of this podcast would remember when we hide ourselves in a narrow space to change our pads or tampons, to flush the evidence of menstruation away carefully and secretly like we are concealing some evidence of a crime. It is true that menstruation has always played a negative role in human history. Putting on a dialectical and contrastive lens, we are going to find what is menstruation in Chinese and American culture, which represent both Eastern and Western civilizations and what is people's attitude towards it in these two countries from two ends of the globe. In this episode, I talk with Dr. Colleen Warner Colaner. Colleen is an associate professor in the Department of Communication, and co-director of the Institute of Family Diversity and Communication at the University of Missouri. Her research examines how communication shapes and sustains relationships in complex, diverse, and modern family structures and experiences. Colleen is the founder and owner of Adopting Communication, a family communication education organization that serves to provide families with communication strategies to promote cooperation and connection. Colleen's work has been published in Communication Monographs, Communication Research, Sex Roles, Journal of Family Communication, and Adoption Quarterly in addition to regional and specialty journals. Recently she contributed a chapter to Neither Here Nor There: The Many Voices of Liminality titled “Adoption and Cross-Cultural Parenting." Colleen describes some of the issues and challenges that adoptees face, including the experience of "permanent liminality." Colleen shares some of the methods that have been found helpful for adoptive parents. She also describes what children mean in our lives and the tendency for parents to view their child as a "mini me." Together we talk about the nature of family and the importance of extended family networks. Finally, we talk about raising awareness around adoption and adoption issues, including the need to remove lingering cultural stigmas around adoption. Learn more: https://www.colleencolaner.com

They were a lot more likely to mention his competence or refer to him as a ‘professor.” ~ Dr. Kristina MitchellDr. Mitchell said the language used in the ratings indicated that “we were evaluated on two different sets of criteria.” Comments about her personality or image or her body were being sexually objectified. Kristina said, “Students were looking at me not as a source of expertise on a topic, but either as a barrier to them not getting the grade they wanted because I'm too mean, or as a potential sexual conquest.” This was not a surprise based on her study of research and examination into how learners evaluate women and men differently at the university-level. References and reads mentioned during our conversation with Kristina: Obama's Female Staffers Came Up With a Genius Strategy to Make Sure Their Voices Were Heard https://www.thecut.com/2016/09/heres-how-obamas-female-staffers-made-their-voices-heard.html  Mitchell, K. Best Forevers: A Podcast for Kindred Spirits

What do you talk about in your close friendships? Everything and anything? Or, do you have hard boundaries? In this episode, Alysa describes her research focusing on sexual communication in college-aged friendships. She details how she come to study the topic, what she’s learned so far including research conducted with the support of an Early Career Grant, the importance of studying this topic, and what else we need to know about sex talk among friends. Let’s talk about sex, but what is meant is “Let’s talk about sex talk!” So meta! Note: This episode is not explicit but does vaguely mention sex talk related to sexual behaviors, sexual health, and sexual assault. Political Correctness is not only stifling the American spirit, it is trying to take away our first amendment rights. And today's guest, Dr. Dathan Paterno, is a chilling example. Dr. Paterno, a clinical psychologist, was faced with being fired from the school board, having his license revoked and received death threats... all over a few tweets about the Women's March that some found offensive. This overreaction to alleged faux pas, in terms of Political Correctness, is rampant and people are being scapegoated for their use of free speech. Dr. Paterno and Dr. Carole discuss what the world is coming to: a far departure from when men were men and women were women. Between the clash of political agendas and sex roles, people are feeling lost and confused these days.

The patriarchy at feminism's core, part deux

Tonight on AVfM radio is the second of two parts on a show comparing two seemingly opposite and oppositional points of view. Girl Writes What, Typhon Blue and John the Other talked last week about our most prevalent and obvious opponents – and the most common point of view of opposition to the human rights of men and boys – and we compared feminism and feminists to the philosophical camp commonly thought of as the political opposite and the natural reverse position to feminism – sometimes  sloppily referred to by feminists as the patriarchy.   On close inspection, it is obvious that feminism is patriarchy, dialled up, made more violent, less equitable, more socially dysfunctional and ultimately, self cannibalizing. And the faster this can be dragged into the light of common knowledge, the sooner we can – as a culture – get off this self destructive socially toxic hell ride, and hopefully arrange our society along lines a sane person might regard as equitable.
