On Wednesday night, two Israeli embassy aides—30-year-old Yaron Lischinsky and 26-year-old Sarah Milgrim—were shot and killed outside the Capital Jewish Museum, where the American Jewish Committee was hosting an event for young diplomats. The suspect, 30-year-old Chicago resident Elias Rodriguez, was immediately arrested. Upon being taken into custody, he chanted “free Palestine,” according to video of the scene; elsewhere, in a manifesto attributed to him, he allegedly wrote “The atrocities committed by Israelis against Palestine defy description and defy quantification.” Immediately, politicians from across the political spectrum and mainstream Jewish groups responded by condemning the killings as a specifically antisemitic act, with some blaming the Palestine solidarity movement for inciting violence. Die teils politischen, teils experimentellen Filmessays eröffnen den Blick auf die Vitalität der Großstadt. Bürgerliche Straßen treffen auf Arbeiter- und Industrieviertel und das Kameraauge fokussiert immer wieder Architekturen der Moderne; alles ist umgeben vom Treiben Spazierender, spielender Kindern und dem Tosen des Straßenverkehrs. In den Filmen offenbart sich ein kritischer Blick auf die sozialen Diskrepanzen in der modernen Großstadt, ohne die Menschen aus einer voyeuristischen oder ausbeuterischen Perspektive zu betrachten. Straßenverkäufer, umherziehende Roma und Sinti oder Arbeiter in beschmutzter Kleidung gehören zur Großstadt wie das bürgerliche Leben der Eliten. Anders als in Werbefilmen politischer Parteien wie der SPD oder der KPD in dieser Zeit, visualisierten die Bauhaus-Filme die soziale Ungleichheit in den modernen Gesellschaften nicht. Diese beobachtende Kamera der BauhäuslerInnen gehört zu den wichtigsten Errungenschaften im deutschen Dokumentarfilm der Weimarer Republik. László Moholy-Nagys meist kurze Etüden oder »soziale Reportagen« bedienen sich der Ästhetik des »Absoluten Films« und verwandeln die Neuerungen des abstrakten Kinos in eine filmische Abstraktion aus Realszenen. Die Filme von Ellen Auerbach (geb. Rosenberg) und Ella Bergmann-Michel verbinden Kunst und Handwerk und eröffnen neue unkonventionelle Perspektiven auf das moderne Leben. Die strikte Ablehnung der nationalistischen, militaristischen und autoritären Politik am Ende der Weimarer Republik prägen die politischen Filme. In Bergmann-Michels Film »Wahlkampf« (1932) dokumentiert sie, wie die Nazi-Propaganda immer militanter in die Straßen Frankfurts eindringt. Sie wurde während der Dreharbeiten verhaftet und einige Filmrollen wurden konfisziert und zerstört. Auerbach wurde 1906 als Kind von jüdisch-orthodoxen Eltern in Karlsruhe geboren. In »Die Große Reise« (1933/1934) und »Tel Aviv« (1933/1934) hält sie ihre Flucht aus Nazi-Deutschland fest und setzt sich eindringlich mit den im Exil lebenden Juden in Palästina auseinander.

Ivy Lee worked with Standard Oil and the Rockefellers for the rest of his life, helping to establish the American Petroleum Institute in 1919, and working for the company's various joint ventures as well, including a petrochemicals partnership with German chemical giant IG Farben. That job, later in his life, took Lee to Germany, to meet with Goebbels and Hitler and give them advice on dealing with the American press. He was under investigation by Congress for his role in Nazi propaganda at the time of his death. Lee's work creating and building the API was one of his most important contributions to fossil fuel propaganda, it's the foundation on which the next 100 years was built. Chapel FM has been working with a group of students from Bishop Young Academy’s Exchange Group to explore the concept of propaganda in the media and arts, both in the past and present. This work culminated in a visit to Huddersfield’s Holocaust Exhibition and Learning Centre where the group discovered the full impact of Nazi Propaganda. They share their experiences and thoughts in this special programme for ELFM.

As the decade wore on gradual apathy and disinterest in the camp system was a defining feature of public attitudes towards mass social and political incarceration. Steven Bach (1938-2009) author of the biography “Leni: The Life and Work of Leni Riefenstahl”, interviewed in 2007 by Richard Wolinsky. Leni Riefenstahl was the film maker behind the Nazi propaganda films Triumph of the Will and Olympia. Reifenstahl, who died in 2003 at the age of a hundred and one, to the end of her life denied her work was political, that she was an artist. Stephen Bach, who died at the age of 70 in 2009, had been a studio executive and began writing  books with “Final Cut”, his memoir about the making of the film Heaven's Gate. He followed that with a biography of the playwright Moss Hart, and then a biography of actress Marlene Dietrich, which as he says, led him to Leni Riefenstahl. The interview was recorded in the KPFA studios on May 7, 2007. Guardian Obituary. In an interview perhaps more timely than the year it was recorded, Bach compares Reifenstahl's work to right-wing propaganda in America, and the use of the Hitler playbook. What's scary is that he could have been describing the Trump campaign and administration.
