Gravity - The Digital Agency Power Up : Weekly shows for digital marketing agency owners.
This week we delve into the journey and experiences of David Drebin. From discovering a passion for photography in the 90s to pursuing opportunities and challenges in New York City, David realized that the journey itself is more important than any destination. We explore David's struggles with the business side of art and the challenges that creatives face in being their own biggest critics. David opens up about impostor syndrome, comparison, and the fear of vulnerability that many people experience. He shares his approach to balancing authenticity and creating personas in the social media world and how he navigates the fine line between creating art he loves and art that sells well. We learn about David's alter ego, his belief in self-advocacy, and his journey of betting on himself. The episode also touches on overcoming insecurity in showing one's work and the importance of letting things flow naturally in the creative process. Hosted by Bob Gentle, this episode promises an insightful conversation with a talented artist who has successfully built and marketed his personal brand.About DavidDavid Drebin is a multidisciplinary artist, working in various art forms, producing limited edition works including Photographs, Lightboxes, Neon light Installations, Sculptures, and Etchings on Glass. In 2005, Drebin had his first solo exhibition at Camera Work in Berlin. This was followed by his first illustrated book entitled “Love and Other Stories”.Reflections on David's artwork:“Drebin's photographs are epic, dramatic, and, above all, cinematic and have been collected around the world. In a unique and opulent way, Drebin stages femme fatales against the gigantic backdrops of cities such as Hong Kong, New York, and Paris. The panorama of the big cities, which, due to their format, are a tribute to cinema, serve as cinematic settings. With their impressive skyscrapers, they provide the viewer with a nearly infinite surface for the imagination. The distinctive tension and depth in his pictures arise from the free combination of such differing topics as humor and sex, melancholy and sex, and melancholy and humour. At Art Miami in 2010, his now sold out “Central Park” sold for a record price of $78,000 through Contessa Gallery who has featured Drebin in major Art Fairs since 2008 alongside art world legends Andy Warhol, Chuck Close and Helmut Newton.Exclusively publishing books with ( www.teNeues.com ), his books are distributed around the world and often followed with exhibitions in Paris, New York, Miami, Istanbul, Amsterdam, Brussels and many other cities Internationally. For centuries, humanity has gazed at the stars and dreamed of discovery. The continual exploration of space has been a symbol of an unharnessed spirit and unabashed desire, pushing us to achieve feats that once seemed impossible – reaching to infinity and beyond. This year, artist Brendan Murphy exemplifies that spirit with the exhibition of Frozen with Desire exhibited by Burgess Projects at Art Miami November 28th – December 4th.The 42-inch cobalt blue chrome sculpture is tagged with Murphy's signature formulae in blue and white. It's face mask and side details are encrusted with an astounding 6,213 shimmering diamonds of the highest quality that total an astounding 517 carats set in three kilos of molded platinum. Alluring with a conjectural gravitational pull that draws the viewer closer, the spaceman's refinement sets all senses ablaze. “I wanted to create a time capsule worthy piece” states Murphy. “Something that both represents my work as well as the moment in time in which we are living. Using materials that are millions of years old and combining them with a very iconic symbol of our generation seemed to make sense to me. The visual and emotional impact this piece creates when you stand before it is hard to describe and has exceeded my wildest expectations”.The level of detail and craftsmanship that went into creating Frozen with Desire is truly astonishing and a testament to the skill of the artist who created it. "The sculpture is a reminder of the power of nature, and a stunning example of human ability to create art that captures the unfathomable beauty of the natural world...as well as a tribute to the creative genius of mankind that allowed humans to explore outer space”, says Lisa Burgess, founder of Burgess Projects. Brendan Murphy is a widely known contemporary artist whose work is represented in over 600 private collections. His work pushes the boundaries of creativity, exploring sculptural pieces, conceptual works, and a wide range of rare materials. Murphy's unique approach to artmaking has garnered attention from collectors and critics alike, and his work is celebrated for its universal appeal. Brendan Murphy is an important voice in the contemporary art world, and his work will continue to provoke and delight viewers for years to come.Fairgoers can view Frozen with Desire at Burgess Projects, Booth #AM425 at Art Miami from November 28th – December 4th. Contact Lisa Burgess for more information, video clips and high-resolution images.
EP 163: Aaron recorded a live show with Photographer E. Brady Robinson at the Hotel Indigo discussing her new Photo Exhibit SK8R GRLS. We discuss her inspiration behind the project, her love for roller skating, how she chose the Women for this and what is the soundtrack to this Exhibition. IG:@ebradyrobinson IG: MarylandArtPlace IG: Acutevisions SK8R GRLS is a photo series by E. Brady Robinson celebrating the freedom and joy of roller skating. The exhibition is on view at Hotel Indigo Baltimore, located at 24 West Franklin St. from Jan 25th - March 18th. A public reception will take place on March 8th from 5 to 7 pm in celebration of International Women's Day. In spring of 2021, Robinson took up skating as a way to stay active and reconnect with friends outdoors during COVID-19. During these skate dates, she photographed friends and eventually, a wider network of Baltimore-based female-identifying skaters. This work combines her love of athleticism, fitness, and fashion photography. These images, made at a moment where it felt like the world was reopening after over a year of closure and isolation during the pandemic, evoke a feeling of release and freedom. Robinson completed her BFA in photography at MICA and MFA in photography at the Cranbrook Academy of Art. Her background is in documentary photography and portraiture. The nine archival metal prints on display at the Hotel Indigo depict strong women amidst a backdrop of Baltimore monuments and sites. Locations such as Lake Montebello, Patterson Park, the Druid Hill Tennis Courts, and the Ravens parking lot, signal the public landscape of Baltimore for those that know it well, in contrast to photographs made in the artist's Maryland Art Place studio which utilize strobe and gel lighting to simulate the vibes of the 80's roller skating rinks reminiscent of Robinson's childhood. The skaters photographed include artists, musicians, and female entrepreneurs; women in the creative scene in Baltimore, including Amy Cavanaugh, Caitlin Gill, Jade Davis, Tina Thompson, Brittany Wight, Les Gray, Hayley Furman, Jessica Lauryn, Sophie Kluckhuhn, and Wildège François. Brady Robinson is a photographer based in Baltimore and a current resident artist at Maryland Art Place. She divides her time between personal art projects and commissioned work. Her documentary Art Desks was published by Daylight Books with an essay by Andy Grundberg and distributed by ARTBOOK D.A.P. In his final audio dispatch as Writer in Residence at UNTITLED, ART Miami Beach 2019, Osman Can Yerebakan sits down with Pari Ehsan, the visionary behind @Paridust. The two discuss the prevalence of textile based art at the fair this year, specifically highlighting works by South American artists. Listen to a friendly conversation about their discoveries at the diverse galleries of UNTITLED, ART, as well as why dressing for Miami Art Week is a form of art in itself.
In conversation with curator Larry Ossei-Mensah, artist Damien Davis discusses the research surrounding his booth presentation with LatchKey Gallery and forthcoming solo exhibition at the Weeksville Heritage Center, titled “Collapse: Black Wall Street”. This exhibition is centered around the history of the Tulsa Race Riot of 1921, recently depicted by the HBO series Watchman and highlighted in the New York Times.
In this episode, UNTITLED, ART's inaugural Writer in Residence, Osman Can Yerebakan, meets with Galerie Magazine's Art and Culture Editor Lucy Rees. Perched on a Wendy White jofa in the lounge designed by the same artist, the two share their picks from the VIP and Press Preview. They discussed the intersection of art and design through artists blurring the distinction between sculpture and function, and mentioned a handful of names whose use of materiality, form, and dimension caught their eyes.
Amber Cowan’s Horror Vacui In Amber Cowan’s cornucopia of magical flameworked objects, each individual ornament in concert with its neighbor creates a sculpture so lavish, so elaborate, it exudes the air of a precious Victorian relic. Her visual feast speaks its truth through an abundance of decoration. The fact that the work is made from repurposed glass is only considered after the viewer recovers from the enchantment of excess. On November 13, 2014, The Corning Museum of Glass (CMOG) awarded Cowan its 29th Rakow Commission, a program that provides $25,000 to encourage glass artists to explore new work without concern for financial limits. The award is presented to an artist not yet represented in the museum’s collection and selected by the curator of modern glass, at that time Tina Oldknow. Cowan’s Garden of the Forgotten and Extinct is now part of CMOG’s permanent collection. Said Oldknow: “Amber takes this ubiquitous commercial glass and gives it a new, cool life, transforming it by destroying it and re-forming it into beautiful and evocatively retro sculptures. For me, Amber was a perfect candidate for the Rakow Commission. I have sometimes picked artists whose work is clearly contemporary, but who also help us understand different aspects of the history of glass. For this purpose, I am not looking for work that replicates earlier styles, but rather work that interprets or contextualizes them in new ways. Amber’s work also addresses contemporary concerns about object making, and I appreciate her fresh take on the potential of what she describes as recycled, up- cycled, and second life glass.” Cowan’s work is made from found American pressed milk glass, also known as opaque glass, made between the 1940s and the 2000s. The artist collects long forgotten objects such as candy dishes, teacups, and plates from thrift shops, flea markets, and even eBay, and re-forms them into beautiful and evocative sculptures. The discarded glass, which she notes has been “abandoned to the dust bins of American design,” is turned into tiny leaves, fruit, swans, roses, and abstract spirals, bits, and spikes. A Philadelphia, Pennsylvania–based artist, Cowan is also a faculty member of the glass department at Tyler School of Art and Architecture. In 2018, she was selected as Artist Honoree at The Urban Glass Gala, served as resident artist at The Chrysler Museum Glass Studio, and lectured at The Glass Art Society Conference, Murano, Italy. Represented by Heller Gallery, Cowan unveiled new work in a solo exhibition titled Salacia in May 2019. Currently, Cowan is converting an old deli into a new studio and living space while finishing a new piece to be exhibited with Heller Gallery at Art Miami, December 4 through 9, 2019. A Burke Prize finalist, two of her pieces are on view at The Museum of Arts and Design in NYC through April 2020.

What is art? I ask this question every year. Some of the things I see at Art Basel tread a VERY fine line between what I think is a discarded pile of trash and what is considered to be revolutionary art work. But...who am I to judge? My girlfriend Noemi (who is a incredible artist) and I were wandering around Art Miami and she introduced me to this lovely man, who had an incredible James Bond Villain like accent and laugh, who had dug up some fossils, and was brilliantly selling his findings in the middle of this fancy art fair! GENIUS. Check out why fossils are art and why museums are dying right now! VIDEOS of this interview are available on my youtube page right now!! Information has evolved into a new species of garbage. The entire concept of someone who is “informed” has changed and now fragmentary 140 character lines of text pass as communication. It is not that this new breed of information is false that is the issue, but rather it is an illusion of knowledge. We are all watching as knowledge is drowning in a river of irrelevance. There is constant stream of data flowing from one communication device to the other without picking up value along the way.Sci-fi novels of the 20th century did not anticipate this 21st century state of reading. Bradbury and Orwell taught us to fear totalitarian governments that wanted to burn books, but no one warned us about the general public expressing their freedom to write so much that nothing would be worth reading. This century’s dystopia novels will be populated by people who read and write all day long, but somehow they know nothing. People who are continually informed and yet have no information. The heroes of these novels will be underground rebels who insist on writing and reading more than 3 lines of text. They can have clever names like Edmund Spenser or Milton Vyasa and these new logos-heros will insist on things like news outlets that pay for and conduct thorough research. Inevitably the next generation of dystopia novels will conclude with death by communal distraction. This new species of information is worse than being deprived of information because information has become a plague. The more you read, the less you know.Tyranny is no longer required for the ruin of a society; the freedom to pursue an infinite appetite for distractions can do the job more efficiently. Included in this is the distraction of continual creativity without rationality or analysis. A 14 year old girl is reported to have sent 35,463 text messages, or about 1 text message a minute in the month of June 2008. “The Old Man and the Sea” only has 27,315 words. The texter in question has stated she texted that much in one month because she was at cheer camp. It seems safe to say that while she wrote more than a Hemmingway novel in one month, the level of valuable information transmitted was probably significantly lower. The antidote to the venom of cultural distraction is to return to state where reading is considered a serious business. Where the goal of information transfer is no longer quantity, but quality. It is now November; ticket buying season for Miami Basel even in a down economy. All of the fairs can be followed on Facebook or Twitter:Pulse on TwitterPulse on FacebookArt Miami on TwitterArt Miami on FacebookMiami Basel on Twitter Miami Basel on Facebook Aqua on FacebookEtc.Etc.I take these modes of communication seriously. Why would I follow Miami Basel’s Twitter account? Because I want to see if the fairs will be worth an investment in a trip this year. I expect the information they post to actually be valuable. I expect to see exhibitor lists. I expect to see performance art schedules. But I am already wrong. One of the fair’s tweets already says, “See you out there!” It was not worth reading. It was information evolved into garbage and I was its garbage collector.I have faith in a return to the seriousness of reading, but I expect it will be a while.-SteveMe in Miami Basel 2006Morgan Pozgar, age 13, is officially the LG National Texting ChampionP.S.Follow me on Twitter or Facebook OMG LOL
