In December 2023, during Miami Art Basel, RA hosted a Community Connections event co-produced by Technique Records and RA City Manager Daniel Jinks. As part of the event, RA Senior Staff Writer Nyshka Chandran moderated a panel with four key figures from the Miami dance music scene: Danny Daze, Jubilee, Nick León, and Romulo Del Castillo to delve into the vibrant, broader history behind the city's electronic dance music scene. Miami's music is dominating worldwide club circuits. The city's current sound—forward-thinking medleys of dembow, cumbia, techno, and breakbeats made by both vanguards and veterans—has been rinsed out at festivals and dance floors in recent years, catapulting the city back into global dance music conversations. This hybrid style has ushered in what many call a renaissance in Miami's creative underground, marking a new chapter in the city's electronic music lineage. How has this current sound been influenced by older, influential genres like Miami bass, electro, and IDM that have long characterized the city? Are there any new societal, cultural, and structural changes that are paving the way for ongoing genre cross-pollination? RA sits down with some of the city's most established names for a deep dive into the explosive growth and origins of Miami music. In this week's all-new episode of THE IDEALISTS., podcast host and entrepreneur, Melissa Kiguwa, speaks with the prolific visual artist, author, and breakout star of Miami Art Basel, Reyna Noriega. Born and raised, in Miami, Reyna paints an intentionally ebullient experience of Black and brown women. Her work has graced covers of The New Yorker, and Science Magazine, and has been featured at Brookfield Place overlooking Freedom Tower in New York City's financial district. Through her major partnerships with Apple, Old Navy, Madewell, Apt2b, and Wayfair, thousands of collectors showcase her art in their homes around the world. Having seen the power of introspection, self-reflection, and healing, Reyna's artistic vision teaches us about the myriad journeys women of color take as we struggle to rise and become our most empowered authentic selves.Highlights:- Reyna leads off the conversation by seeing a need not only for greater representation of women of color, but also a shift in the predominant narrative from one solely of trauma to one inclusive of joy, positivity, and uplifting stories.- Next, she relates her passion for the accessibility afforded by digital art, but also the challenges of its legitimacy as a form. Additionally, in balancing her desire for commercial collaboration with her desire for respect as a fine artist, she is also continually grappling with her legitimacy as an artist while also being able to monetize her work to live. It's the life of a working artist.- Building on this, she talks about the predatory nature of the art market—how one is only successful after death. Being a working, living artist, trying to make room for other artists to do the same, is very much part of her mission right now. With four shows at Miami Art Basel this year, and then curating her very first show featuring emerging Black and brown artists—she is finally realizing this mission in concrete terms.- Lastly, Reyna shares her audacious vision for the world that even amidst the current climate of negativity on the internet, and the highly divisive nature of society, we might still hold space for more love, compassion, and grace for one another.Resources:1. How is everybody! On the second episode of SDwS we brought on Kevin and talked about Miami/Art Basel, Thanksgiving, Toy Boogers and his new job as Senior Even Manager for Cool Cats!
I had Bruce Hartman on today, which was so much fun. He's a natural, gregarious, happy individual, and he's always been that way. I've known him for 20 plus years and any time I've ever seen him at a show (which is usually where I see him) he's always laughing and giggling and just having a great time. You see, Bruce absolutely loves art and is a very knowledgeable former art professional having just retired after 30 years as Executive Director and Chief Curator at the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art.At first glance, you may get the impression that contemporary art was Bruce's main focus at the museum, but don't let that fool you. He knows an incredible amount on the subject of Native American art. His father and mother collected prehistoric and then historic Indian art, which got Bruce's artistic entanglement going very early in life, resulting in him becoming one of the foremost authorities on Native American paintings, from both historic to contemporary - as well as Zuni fetishes. It was a longer interview than normal, not because of any particular reason other than Bruce is such an interesting individual. I just couldn't stop listening and, you know, those are the best interviews as far as I'm concerned. As a result, this podcast will be split into two parts. This is part two of the Bruce Hartman podcast.

Join us for a conversation between creatives about Shinique Smith’s practice, and how growing up in Baltimore influenced her path as an artist. Shinique Smith is known for her monumental works of bundled fabric, calligraphy and collage inspired by the vast nature of ‘things’ that we consume and discard, which resonate on a spiritual and social scale. Her work demonstrates how connections can be made between materials in ways that challenge us to think differently about the life of our belongings. Based in Los Angeles, born and raised in Baltimore, Shinique Smith is an artist known for her monumental paintings and sculptures of fabric, clothing, and calligraphy inspired by the wonder found within the vast nature of “things” we call belongings. Recent solo exhibitions include the California African American Museum, Museum of Fine Art, Boston; and an upcoming presentation with UBS Art Collection in Miami Art Basel and the UBS Art Gallery, NY. Her work is currently on view in Generations: A History of Black Abstraction at The Baltimore Museum of Art where Shinique will be presenting a new performance January 11th 2020. Cara Ober writes about Baltimore's unique cultural landscape from the perspective of an artist, feminist, and culture worker. She approaches the art community from a constructive and critical perspective informed by material and pop culture, history, social movements, and politics. As the founding editor of BmoreArt, Baltimore's daily online art magazine and biannual print journal, Ober has written critical reviews, essays, interviews, and opinion editorials for the past decade about contemporary art, museum culture, and the innovative ways artists sustain a professional creative practice. Ober has taught and lectured at MICA, Johns Hopkins University, American University, UMBC, Towson University, and Goucher College. She holds an MFA in painting from MICA and a degree in fine arts from American University. BmoreArt is Baltimore's art and culture magazine, based both in print and online. We are a community-based, independent art publication that reflects the culture of Baltimore and the surrounding Mid-Atlantic region, including Maryland, Washington, DC, and Northern Virginia. In this episode Gary Mansfield talks to art duo LoveJordan (@lovejordanart) This is the second of three episodes featuring artists from a group exhibition called ‘A River Runs Through It’, showing at Gallery Oxo at the base of The Oxo Tower, on London’s Southbank running from 4-8 September. LoveJordan is an art duo comprising of Johnny Love and Samuel Jordan. Their work feels like a feat of aesthetic endurance, at first sight. It can be row after row of small, corked bottles containing various amounts of pigments, quietly waiting to be noticed by the viewer. You would be wrong to presume that LoveJordan employ a team of assistance to create their work. One piece consisted of over 130,000 elements, which was carefully flown to the Miami Art Basel, by the Woolff Gallery. Fortunate for all involved, flying it home was not necessary, as it sold within hours. No one was TAKEN in the making of this podcast (on account of the fact that Liam Neeson was outside in the parking lot for the duration of its taping.)
A couple of months ago, I was trying to find a contact for for Snoop Dog. He was coming to Tampa to do a show and I wanted to catch up with him (I used to give him licenses when he first came out while I was handling Sampling licensing for MCA) and wanted to get an interview with him for the show. It didn't happen, but when I was lead to this booking agency, I spoke with a very helpful man named Louis. We got to talking, he mentioned that he knew of this great drummer/artist Lola Blu from Miami. I was immediately intrigued. I also knew what his next question was going to be. I didn't let him ask it, I said it for him "yes, I'll have her on the show, how can I reach her?" I instantly without even seeing her work that I knew I wanted her on the show. As luck would have it, she has agreed to do the show and she's here with us in today’s episode. Lola Blu is a multi-faceted artist with skills ranging from visual arts, music and fashion photography. She combines her passion for music with eccentric visual art. Her work has graced the stage with many musical sensations and currently she is in an all-female electronic duo consisting of a drummer and DJ called Blu Cartell. Lola does two of my favorite things, art and music. Not only is she a drummer, she was also a dancer starting at age 2. I feel like we’re kindred spirits. I love her spirit and energy. Lola has created beautiful works of art. She draws and paints fun, images on drum heads and drum shells. Some of the drummer clients she’s created pieces for include: Quest Love of The Roots, Aaron Spears of Usher, Brian Frasier Moore of Madonna , Adrian Young of No Doubt, Gerald Heyward of Michael Jackson and many more. I can’t wait for her to do one for me!! Today, Lola gives you a birds-eye look into how she brought her talent to light and how you should always trust your instinct and follow your bliss. Lola will be part of the Art Basel 2016 shows in Miami, so if you’re in the area, be sure to look her up.
