James unloads on Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan's decision to run for Michigan governor as an independent, calling it a cowardly, self-serving strategy wrapped in faux centrism. He argues that Duggan didn't leave the Democratic Party to offer something new—he fled it to avoid facing Jocelyn Benson in a primary. He exposes Duggan's contradictory campaign moves, like hoisting the Pride flag while claiming to be a moderate, and draws comparisons to Bill Clinton's “Sister Souljah” moment, which Duggan avoided.Discover more at Enjoyer.com/PodcastFollow GUEST NAME on X:Follow James on X: @DownI75 This is a public episode. The former president and the thriller writer previously teamed up on two #1 New York Times bestsellers. And now they've written their third thriller: "The First Gentleman," about a female president and her husband, who is on trial for murder. In this web exclusive, Bill Clinton and James Patterson talk with correspondent Tracy Smith about the process and joy of their collaborations; how the characters reflect an attitude in Washington where politics is a game; and, in the current political climate, the necessity of maintaining democracy. On today's episode, Michael Smerconish dives into the latest poll question at Smerconish.com: “Do you agree with Bill Clinton that the book Original Sin is being used to unfairly blame Joe Biden for Donald Trump's election?” After recently interviewing former President Bill Clinton and best-selling author James Patterson about their new political thriller, Michael shares insights on the book's surprising substance—particularly Clinton's vision for tackling the national debt, tucked into a beach read. But while Smerconish zeroed in on the book's fiscal message, others focused on Clinton's comments regarding President Biden and his role in Trump's reelection. Is this new narrative fair—or a strategic rewrite of political responsibility? Listen for Michael's take, then head to Smerconish.com to vote on today's question and make your voice heard.

America has a powerful new president... And her husband's on trial for murder. Former President Bill Clinton and bestselling author James Patterson are back with another thriller: The First Gentlemen. Yes, it IS a work of fiction, but as you'll hear in Michael's conversation with them, there are very real-life, real-world points the book makes, particularly on the debt situation in the US. Listen to this fun conversation and pick up the book. Original air date 2 June 2025. The book was released on 2 June 2025.

The Education Myth: How Human Capital Trumped Social Democracy (Cornell UP, 2023) questions the idea that education represents the best, if not the only, way for Americans to access economic opportunity. As Jon Shelton shows, linking education to economic well-being was not politically inevitable. In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, for instance, public education was championed as a way to help citizens learn how to participate in a democracy. By the 1930s, public education, along with union rights and social security, formed an important component of a broad-based fight for social democracy. Shelton demonstrates that beginning in the 1960s, the political power of the education myth choked off powerful social democratic alternatives like A. Philip Randolph and Bayard Rustin's Freedom Budget. The nation's political center was bereft of any realistic ideas to guarantee economic security and social dignity for the majority of Americans, particularly those without college degrees. Embraced first by Democrats like Lyndon Johnson, Jimmy Carter, and Bill Clinton, Republicans like George W. Bush also pushed the education myth. The result, over the past four decades, has been the emergence of a deeply inequitable economy and a drastically divided political system. Jon Shelton is professor and chair of democracy and justice studies at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay. In addition to The Education Myth he is the author of Teacher Strike! Public Education and the Making of a New American Political Order, which was the winner of the International Standing Conference of the History of Education's First Book Award in 2018. Shelton has also published work in the Washington Post, Dissent, Jacobin, Democracy: A Journal of Ideas, and other publications. He served as the Vice-Chair of the city of Green Bay's first ever Equal Rights Commission and sits on the Board of Directors for the Labor and Working-Class History Association and the Wisconsin Labor History Society. He also serves as President for Higher Education of the American Federation of Teachers-Wisconsin. Learn more about your ad choices. www.commsolutionsmn.com-The news is starting to come out about how ill Joe Biden was as president. The whole world could see it, even though the media was denying it. Jake Tapper might have released a book now, but where was he while Biden was still in office? We just found out that Joe Biden has prostate cancer and that it has metastacized to the bone. With as bad as it's been, he most likely had cancer for quite a while. So this begs the question: what did the people around him know and when did he know it? This isn't the first time that this has happened. Just like Jill Biden, Edith Wilson and Eleanor Roosevelt kept their husbands' medical states hidden from Congress... and America. So who was more at fault- the First Lady, his advisors, or was everyone so busy trying to stay in power that they all hid the truth from us? No one is supposed to wield the President's power except the President of the United States. Who was running our country? We need answers and people need to go to prison. Use the 25th Amendment, if it's warranted, but you can't hide behind a weakened president and use the power for yourself.

Send us a textThis is the last lecture I delivered in my academic career. I discovered that I had miscalculated the end of the semester and that I had an extra class. I did have a regular academic topic but my wife said, "You are a senior professor. You have taught 48 years. Your students see you as someone who has had a life time of experiences. They will forget an academic lecture but they will not forget your personal stories. Why not tell them about the famous political leaders you encountered during your lifetime." So these are my reflections on 19 different people who crossed my path. The first two are Nixon and Kennedy when they were campaigning in 1960. The last was my friend Sibylle Laurischk, a member of the German Bundestag. Some of these stories are funny, some are affirming, some are deadly serious. Those discussed include Bill Clinton, Gerald Ford, George McGovern, Spiro Agnew, Jimmy Carter and Roslyn, Mayor Orville Hubbard of Dearborn, Televantelist and Presidential candidate Pat Robertson, Queen Elizabeth, Queen Nour of Jordan, Nelson Mandela, Ambassador Moallam of Syria, Rabbi Meir Kahane, the racist Israeli who was assassinated, Hanan Ashrawi, the Palestinian spokesperson, Vice President Khaddam of Syria, Shlomo Gazit, former head of israeli military intelligence, Archbishop Vigneron of Detroit, and Sibylle Laurischk. I have separate podcasts on Jimmy Carter, Orville Hubbard, Queen Elizabeth, Nelson Mandela, and Rabbi Kahana. My son Greg, who was four when we met Vice President Spiro Agnew, reminded me recently that, "I shook hands with Spiro Agnew." I had forgotten that, but he definitely deserves his moment in the sun. This was a recorded zoom lecture that was then shared with students. Sorry that this podcast platform will not allow zoom images. Note that I also have a lecture on Memorable Students. That was posted back in 2020.

Trump's tariffs were initially banned – before being overturned within a day. A federal court had blocked the tariffs on Wednesday night after three judges ruled that Trump had overstepped his authority when introducing them. But just a day later the decision was temporarily paused after a federal appeal court reinstated the tariffs. The White House now says they will “win this battle in court”. We explain what it all means and dig deeper into the legal aspect of the economic measures. Also on the programme: Israel has announced a major expansion of Jewish settlements in the occupied West Bank. More than twenty new settlements have been approved. We hear from a Settler and a Palestinian living in the West Bank. And, Elon Musk has left the US Department of Government Efficiency, also known as Doge. We speak to someone who was also given the task of ‘reinventing government' efficiency during Bill Clinton's time in power to discuss how effective Musk really was in his job.(Photo: IBEX rises 0.49 percent pending the blocking of Trump's tariffs, Madrid, Spain Credit: VEGA ALONSO DEL VAL/EPA-EFE/Shutterstock)

Chuck Todd begins by examining whether Democrats have lost by enough to force meaningful change or if they're simply tinkering around the edges. He covers Trump's recent controversial moves, including hosting dinners for his memecoin buyers and politicizing his West Point commencement speech, while exploring how "whataboutism" and Trump creating a culture of fear have become pervasive in our political discourse. Chuck analyzes new polling data on potential Democratic matchups and discusses why being an incumbent may be a liability in upcoming elections. Then, he's joined by political analyst and author of “Where Have All The Democrats Gone”, Ruy Teixeira, who provides insights into America's ongoing political realignment and the challenges facing both major parties. They explore whether Democrats need to move toward the center to win back working-class voters, discuss the possibility of party collapse similar to what happened with the UK's Tories, and examine why neither party seems capable of forming a truly dominant coalition. The conversation covers everything from the Democrats' branding problems and communication failures to Trump's enduring influence on American politics and the potential for viable independent candidates in 2028.Chuck concludes with upcoming Republican primary dynamics, including Senator John Cornyn's hiring of Trump's campaign manager and why it could be an UGLY campaign.Timeline:00:00 Introduction02:00 Have Democrats lost by enough to force them to change?04:30 Democrats seem intent on tinkering rather than an overhaul05:45 Trump hosts dinner for buyers of his memecoin06:45 Mike Johnson defends corruption if it's “done in the open” * (14:30)08:30 Trump politicizes his West Point commencement speech10:30 “Whataboustism” is plaguing our politics12:00 Neither party has a monopoly on crazy or violence12:45 Trump has created a culture of fear which mutes criticism14:30 The public has become numb to Trump's bad behavior15:45 Corruption will eat away the credibility of the MAGA movement*16:30 New poll released on AOC vs Schumer and Torres vs Hochul18:30 Being an incumbent will be a negative in 2026 and 202822:10 Ruy Texeira joins the Chuck Toddcast 23:40 What is the current state of America's political realignment? 26:25 Do Democrats need to move to the center to win working class voters? 28:10 Lower turnout benefits Democrats 29:55 Democrats have only changed rhetoric, not their positions 31:40 Neither party can form a dominant coalition 32:40 Despite the chaos, Trump's approval rating isn't that bad 34:25 Could we see one party collapse like the Tories in the UK? 36:10 Could a third party replace one of our two parties 37:55 Voters in the western world feel the system is broken 38:40 Democrats are viewed as the status quo party 41:10 What are some lessons Democrats can take from the early 90's? 43:10 Neither party loses by enough to change 46:40 The DNC doesn't grasp how bad the brand has become 47:40 The problem is bigger than communications 49:40 Trump is the towering figure of 21st century American politics 51:10 What to make of Gavin Newsom's political maneuvering? 52:30 Who could be the Democrats next Bill Clinton? 54:40 What states should Democrats be targeting for future elections? 57:10 Democrats made a mistake not having Iowa first in their primary calendar 58:10 Why has Wisconsin stayed so competitive? 1:00:10 What to make of the red shift in blue states where they didn't campaign? 1:02:40 Party strategists are too out of step with the voters 1:04:25 What will we learn from statewide elections in 2025? 1:07:25 Will Joe Biden become a pariah like Jimmy Carter for the Democratic party? 1:09:10 Being a cabinet member for Biden will tank Pete Buttigieg's presidential hopes 1:10:10 The cover up of Biden's decline will haunt the Democrats for years 1:11:25 Any positives for the Democrats? 1:12:25 There could be a viable independent candidate in 20281:16:00 Chuck's thoughts on the interview with Ruy Texeira1:17:30 Senator John Cornyn has hired Trump's campaign manager1:19:00 We're about to see new level of negativity in a Republican primary1:20:45 The new traffic patterns out of Nationals games are annoying

Read Alex's article here: https://www.compactmag.com/.../the-techno-populist.../ For more than a decade, we have been told that insurgent populists are challenging a complacent post-political technocratic establishment. Combatants on both sides testify to this polarization. Poland's Donald Tusk, former President of the European Council and the country's current prime minister, stated back in 2017 that “we must challenge the populists”—and he did so, defeating the right-wing Law and Justice Party in 2023. French President Emmanuel Macron warned last year that “populists” risk undermining the European bloc from within. On the other side, Britain's Nigel Farage declared the same year that “nation-state democracy” was “making a comeback against the globalists.” More recently, Italy's Giorgia Meloni railed against “the global leftist liberal network” created in the 1990s by Tony Blair and Bill Clinton. In this episode of The Georgia Politics Podcast, we sit down with former Congressman Bob Barr for Part 1 of our in-depth conversation about his remarkable career in public service. Barr reflects on his early work as a CIA analyst during the Cold War, offering a rare glimpse into the world of intelligence and the global tensions that shaped U.S. policy at the time. He then takes us through his years in Congress, sharing what it was like to navigate the political landscape of Washington during a transformative era in American politics. Most notably, Barr discusses his high-profile role as one of the House Impeachment Managers during the impeachment trial of President Bill Clinton—offering firsthand insight into one of the most dramatic constitutional confrontations in modern history. Throughout the conversation, Barr speaks candidly about the challenges of balancing national security with civil liberties, the evolution of American conservatism, and the lessons he's carried from each chapter of his career. It's a revealing and timely discussion with a man who has been at the crossroads of intelligence, law, and politics. Today, we're taking a look at a predecessor to DOGE: The Reinventing Government project (officially known as the NPR, for National Partnership for Reinventing Government). The NPR ran for almost the full duration of President Bill Clinton's two terms, and led to the elimination of over 100 programs and over 250,000 federal jobs. Both NPR and DOGE are case studies in a long history of government reform efforts — some more successful than others. Our guest is John Kamensky, who served as Vice President Al Gore's deputy for the National Performance Review (NPR) for eight years. Kamensky was colloquially known as “Mr. Checklist” for his work organizing the Reinventing Government initiative.Kamensky is a clear-eyed observer, and he doesn't hedge about NPR's failures and missed opportunities. In some ways, the Reinventing Government Initiative was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to cut headcount, spending, and regulation at the end of the Cold War and change the way the government operated. We discuss:* Did the NPR actually work?* What was the Board of Tea Experts?* Why was the federal government subsidizing mohair?* NPR made the federal workforce older. Was that bad?* What doesn't Elon understand about the federal government? You can find the transcript for this conversation at www.statecraft.pub. This is a public episode. Joanna Coles sits down with legendary Democratic strategist James Carville, the “Ragin' Cajun” who helped elect Bill Clinton and has never been shy about saying what his party needs to hear. Carville unloads on why Trump's media circus is a deliberate smokescreen, keeping Americans distracted from real economic anxieties—rising costs and disappearing job security. He breaks down why Democrats are failing to cut through the noise and warns that "pronoun" obsessed liberals are more trouble than they're worth and should go off to start their own party. When you think about great political comebacks, maybe you think of Donald Trump, or Richard Nixon, or “comeback kid” Bill Clinton. You might soon add Andrew Cuomo to that list. In 2020, Cuomo was at the top of the world. He had been governor of New York for a decade. He had an illustrious career in New York politics—which is sort of the Cuomo family business. He learned how the state worked from his father, three-term Democratic governor Mario Cuomo. When COVID hit, Governor Cuomo's star just kept rising. Millions of Americans—even outside of New York—tuned into his COVID briefings, and his CNN segments with his brother, Chris Cuomo. He was “America's Governor.” On the cover of Rolling Stone. Women and men were even self-identifying as “Cuomosexual.” But then it all came crashing down. With two scandals—one personal and one political. As Covid was peaking in New York City, Andrew Cuomo was hit with a wave of allegations. In the end, state Attorney General Letitia James brought forward a report that alleged Cuomo sexually harassed 11 women. (Cuomo denies wrongdoing.) The other scandal, as many will recall, had to do with Covid—specifically, Cuomo's administration was accused of mishandling the readmission of elders who'd had Covid into nursing homes, and many alleged that he misrepresented the nursing home death count. The governor disputes that, as you'll hear today. By August 2021, Cuomo announced his resignation. His political career appeared to be over. For a time, he totally disappeared from public life. He went from having an audience of 59 million tuning into his Covid briefings to zero. But today, in May of 2025, the picture is dramatically different. Andrew Cuomo is now the front-runner to be the next mayor of New York City. Among Democrats—the party that tore him down—he has a commanding lead, polling at around 37 percent ahead of next month's primary. His closest competitor, 33-year-old socialist state Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani, is hovering around 18 percent, according to a Marist Marist poll from just last week. So, what is it about Andrew Cuomo? Will New York choose Andrew Cuomo again? And if so, why? What does that say about the state of the city and our political choices? And why does he want the job of mayor at all? Today on Honestly, Bari asks former governor Andrew Cuomo about all of it—Covid and the harassment allegations, but also his vision for New York City, addressing public safety and affordability, his thoughts on school choice, Eric Adams's tenure, the state of the Democratic Party, Donald Trump, illegal immigrants in New York City, Zohran Mamdani, and his plan for getting NYC back on track. Patrick Knowlton: Vince Foster WitnessPatrick Knowlton, a lifelong Democrat who voted for Bill Clinton in 1992, stopped in Fort Marcy Park to relieve his bladder just hours before White House Deputy Counsel Vincent Foster's body was found. Little did he know that his life would never be same.Knowlton saw another car with Arkansas license plates in the parking lot, but not Foster's. He also was alarmed by the menacing-looking occupant of that vehicle. However, Knowlton's statement was completely misrepresented by the FBI. When he went public with his protests, strange things started happening around Knowlton. He experienced systematic harassment on the street witnessed by two reporters. When he was called before Independent Counsel Kenneth Starr's grand jury, he was pummeled by the prosecutor.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.

I want to tell you the story of a kid, born in 1937 into segregated Washington, D.C. He's 9 when his father dies and 13 when his mother has a mental breakdown, disappears, and is institutionalized. He's effectively orphaned. This is how George Raveling's story begins. Despite being dealt one of the worst cards imaginable, George, now 87, went on to become the most revered basketball coach in the world. He played against Jerry West, the man on the NBA logo. He became only the second black basketball player for Villanova University. And he went on to become the first black coach at several American universities. He'd go on to coach and mentor players like Michael Jordan. And chances are, you probably would've never worn—or even heard of—Air Jordan sneakers if it wasn't for George. Yet, in all his decades of coaching, the words Head Coach never appeared on his door. Instead, it always read: “George Raveling, Educator.” George has had a bit of a Forrest Gump life, somehow showing up at the most important events in American 20th-century history. He stood next to Martin Luther King Jr. at the March on Washington. He met presidents Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan, Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, and Harry S. Truman. And he traveled the world promoting basketball as an international sport. This is a man who made his own breaks, continues to break glass ceilings, and embodies the American dream. Today on Honestly, Bari Weiss sits down with George to discuss his extraordinary life and his new book, What You're Made For: Powerful Life Lessons from My Career in Sports, which he wrote alongside Ryan Holiday.
