Can the ancient teachings of Zen Buddhism help us engage with the challenges work, family and relationships throw our way? Teacher, author and Zen Buddhist priest Peter Coyote believes that they can: his new book, Zen in the Vernacular: Things As It Is, argues that Zen can be both a creative problem-solving mechanism and a moral guide; ideal for the stresses and problems we face day-to-day. Andrew and Peter discuss: How Peter found Buddhism and became a Zen Buddhist priest. Why Buddhism ISN'T about turning away from the world. Why we need more than just “self-help”. How Zen Buddhism helps us engage with the suffering we see in the world. The importance of meditation. The usefulness of Buddhist teachings like The Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path. Peter Coyote is an award-winning actor, narrator, and Zen teacher. He is recognized for his acting in 160 films including E.T., Outrageous Fortune, Bitter Moon and Cross Creek, and his narration work in over 140 documentaries. He narrated the PBS series The Pacific Century, winning an Emmy Award, as well as fourteen Ken Burns documentaries, including The Roosevelts, for which he won a second Emmy. In 2011 he was ordained as a Zen Buddhist priest and in 2015 received “transmission” from his teacher, making him an independent Zen teacher who has ordained his own priests. His latest book is Zen in the Vernacular: Things As It Is, and he is also the author of several volumes of poetry. THIS WEEK: Emanuelle in America (1977), Star Of David: Beautiful Girl Hunter (1979), Bitter Moon (1992)VOTE ON THE NAME FOR THIS MONTH'S THEMEANOTHER PATRON REQUEST EPISODE! Theres no better way to kick off November than with a trio of movies that would get a more respectable podcast shamed and criticized into oblivion. Lucky for us, most people don't care about which films we cover and those who do hold us to the lowest of standards. We'll be tackling all the hard hitting questions this week like: Why is the greatest amount of effort Joe D'Amato has ever put into a film a few grainy snippets of people being convincingly tortured? Was David Cronenberg kind of into that shit? Is Star of David mostly anti-semitic or the most anti-semitic? How much does it rule when Peter Coyote nostalgically yearns for Roman Polanski's wife to pee on him?All of these answered AND MORE!Donate to Palestinian Medical Aid Support Optimism Vaccine on Patreon
Hugh John Mungo Grant was born at the start of September, 1960, Live at Hammersmith, London to a Highlander turned carpet salesman and a music and multilingual language teacher. A 1st XV division rugby player with a background in English literature who turned down an offer for a PhD in art history at London University, he instead took up drama at Oxford. Kicking off his career in Merchant Ivory stinker Maurice, he got his first major role in Ken Russell's Lair of the White Worm, followed by a headlining turn in Roman Polanski's Bitter Moon before striking international box office with Four Weddings and a Funeral. Splitting his career between twee faux-arthouse fare like Sirens, Sense and Sensibility and The Englishman Who Went Up a Hill But Came Down a Mountain and more populist roles in comedies like Notting Hill, Small Time Crooks, Love Actually and the Bridget Jones films, Grant would often strike gold with rom com fare like Two Weeks Notice and Music and Lyrics before a lengthy hiatus from film peppered with occasional guest roles ranging from the highly entertaining The Man From Uncle and the pandering Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. A noted curmudgeon and on-set perfectionist, Grant has a notedly embattled relationship with the tabloid press, and was a major player in stopping the detestable Rupert Murdoch and the practice of celebrity phone tapping. And who can forget the whole Divine Brown affair? Join us as we take on the loveable and eternally youthful in spirit Hugh Grant, only here on Weird Scenes! There are plenty of ways to help you on your way to discovering more about the films you love, as well as ones you might not know too much about. There's always books on different filmmakers, or sort of the audio form of that, the audio commentaries that are usually found on most of our favorite films. The more insight you have, the more you will know, and maybe even enjoy it more. One of those that is helping fans learn just that is Troy Howarth. He's written over a dozen books on a varity of subjects, usually in the Italian film genre, covering directors like Argento, Bava, Fulci, and more recently, Umberto Lenzi. He's also published a 3-volume set on the giallo film. Plus, he has done a ton of different commentaries, giving fans even more info! In Andrzej Żuławski's "Possession" (1981), Anna (Isabelle Adjani) and Marc (Sam Neill) are a married couple in turmoil. When Marc, some kind of international spy (it's never specified) comes home to West Berlin after a mission in East Berlin, he and Anna are on thin ice. Marc suspects she's having an affair and when he finds confirmation of this news, has a brief depressive spiral. Their son, Bob (Michael Hogben), seems to be the only thing keeping both of them in contact with each other, although he is severely neglected by both throughout the film. In Anna's absence, Marc clings to other women like Helen, Bob's teacher (also played by Adjani), who is Anna's double but with lighter hair, eyes, and a more easy-going attitude; and Margie, Anna's best friend who pops in as a surrogate caregiver when Marc needs her. In order to figure out WTF is going on with Anna, Marc decides to hire a detective to look into her whereabouts/affairs. What he finds is more than Marc could have ever predicted. Not only is Anna killing men, she's feeding parts of them to a monster that she is also fucking. The monster is a project and when “ready,” will become Marc's double … the version of him that Anna finds most palatable. The film's structure has been compared to that of a spiral staircase (a common visual in many Żuławski films, including this one) … at each new level, it builds on what is already there, transcending to something the same but different. Here are some things we mentioned during the episode and/or that we think you should check out: Alison Taylor's installment on "Possession" from the Devil's Advocates series (Be warned, they seem to print these books on demand, so the photos are potato quality but the text is excellent. I wish Liverpool University Press would just sell a PDF.) Kier-La Janisse's "House of Psychotic Women" where she discusses the film and her own relationship to it (among others) Interview with Żuławski Kim Newman's overview on the history of the ‘video nasty' controversy The upcoming Faith & Chance (A Deep Dive into POSSESSION) podcast 2016 Daughters of Darkness 4-part series on Żuławski (search for his name) The Projection Booth podcast (search for "Possession") Other cerebral horror movies about fucked up relationships where people try to possess each other: Lars von Trier's “Antichrist” (2009) David Cronenberg's “The Brood” (1979) Nicolas Roeg's “Don't Look Now” (1973) Claire Denis' “Trouble Every Day” (2001) Roman Polanski's “Bitter Moon” (1992) Ingmar Bergman's “Through a Glass Darkly” (1961) Other cerebral horror movies about women losing their shit: Roman Polanski's “Repulsion” (1965) and “Rosemary's Baby” (1968) David Fincher's “Gone Girl” (2014) Julia Ducournau's "Raw" (2017) and “Titane” (2021) David Lynch's "Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me" (1992), “Mulholland Drive” (2001), and “Inland Empire” (2008) Ingmar Bergman's "Persona" (1966)
Show 36 opens with The Rebel starring Tony Hancock escaping his hum drum existence in London and hotfooting it to Paris to realise his dream of being an artist. But is the topsy turvy, shallow world of art ready for Hancock's infantile school? Or is it Hancock who should be ready?Fausto 5.0 is another twist in the tale of a man's pact with the devil. Set against the background of an unfamiliar Barcelona our protagonist's world becomes a hallucinatory nightmare as obsessions become real.We round things off with the winner of our Polanski listener's vote: Bitter Moon, which has Peter Coyote regale his sexual escapades as a wannabe writer to Hugh Grant, but believe us, there's soooooo much more to this eye-winking romp.

Mason attempts suicide but is saved by Walter Cole. Cole promises him a job as a hunting guide that pays well if he can handle it. Mason passes the test given from Thomas Burns and is flown to a remote cabin in Oregon. Once at the Cabin, Mason meets the hunting party that paid $50,000 each to be included in this particular hunt. The party consists of Thomas Burns, the founder of the hunt, and super weird guy. Doc Hawkins, a psychopathic psychiatrist who specializes in psychological assessments for the CIA. Walter Cole, the locator, he finds the perfect prey. Texas "oil man" John Griffin or Dr. Cox who is grieving over the murder of his daughter. Wealthy executive on Wall Street, Derek Wolfe Sr. and his son Derek Wolfe Jr., who is at first unaware of the actual purposes of the hunt. The first night all the men are eating a pig feast and engaging in conversation (Also chewing as loud as possible). Mason receives a pack of cigarettes from Hawkins and learns a little history about his birthmark. Gary Busey gives a monologue to die for about his bulldog, and a must watch. The next morning Mason is woken up with a gun to the face and is told to run for his life! The group finish breakfast and then begin the hunt. Mason is forced to protect himself and survive at any means possible. Will he survive?! Let the hunting start!!!! Highlights: A dog dies within 10 minutes; actually, that sucks. A brutal story of the killing of Prince Henry Stout by Gary Busey (this film hates dogs). Heads in jars, always a treat. Gary Busey is served up extra crispy. Dr. Cox gets shot IN THE FACE. An exploding ATV that leaves a man legless. An annoying young man falls to his death, and the whole audience is better for it. Rutger Hauer dresses up as a priest and GETS BLOWN UP. Bonus points, Ice-T can't stop saying quotable lines! Example, "I would run to Alaska for twenty dollars." Come back next week for our surprise Busey movie for a "Very Busey Christmas"! The gang take to the high seas for a tale of love gone sour and the increasingly terrible things people who can't stay apart do to each other when they get bored... Roman Polanski's Bitter Moon. Lauded by the Museum of Modern Art in New York as “one of the great modern masters of the cinema” Roman Polanski has over the course of five decades refined a formal film language and expressed a mordantly ironic worldview in genre-defining films that are provocative, compelling and inventive. ROMAN: 10 x Polanski proposes ten key films drawn from Polanski’s filmography – from the director’s Polish New Wave debut, Knife in the Water to his 2010 political thriller, The Ghost Writer, by way of the director’s British films of the ‘60s, New Hollywood classics Rosemary’s Baby and Chinatown and Paris-set thrillers The Tenant, Frantic and Bitter Moon. In this podcast Roberta Ciabarra who curated the season talks to Spiro Economopoulos about her reasons for picking these 10 films and how the extraordinary circumstances of Polanski's life are reflected in his work.
