Click here to try it out!Welcome back to Bad Dads Film Review! This week, we're paging through the murky corridors of mystery, rare books, and Satanic secrets with Roman Polanski's atmospheric thriller The Ninth Gate (1999). Adapted from Arturo Pérez-Reverte's novel The Club Dumas, the film stars Johnny Depp as Dean Corso, a rare book dealer whose latest assignment drags him deep into a web of occult intrigue.Setting the Scene: Leather Bindings and Hidden SymbolsDean Corso is a sleazy but skilled rare book expert hired by the wealthy and enigmatic Boris Balkan (Frank Langella) to authenticate one of the few remaining copies of The Nine Gates of the Kingdom of Shadows, a 17th-century tome said to summon the Devil himself. Balkan believes only one of the copies is genuine, and he tasks Corso with traveling across Europe to examine all three. As Corso delves deeper, people connected to the books start turning up dead, and he finds himself pursued by cultists, a mysterious woman with supernatural abilities (Emmanuelle Seigner), and his own growing paranoia.Part noir detective story, part supernatural thriller, The Ninth Gate moves at a deliberately slow pace, building dread and unease through long shadows, whispered dialogue, and a creeping sense of danger. The mystery surrounding the book's origin and the authenticity of its illustrations becomes Corso's obsession. Each encounter along his journey offers new clues—or misdirections—about the book's true purpose, and whether the devil himself is guiding Corso's path. The film culminates in a quiet but unsettling resolution that subverts expectations. It's less about explosive revelations and more about slow, unnerving transformation, with Corso's character gradually shifting from skeptic to something far more… initiated. At its core, The Ninth Gate explores the timeless Faustian dilemma—how far one will go in pursuit of forbidden knowledge. Corso is less driven by belief than by greed and curiosity, but his journey reveals how seductive and consuming power can be. The book becomes a mirror reflecting the soul of each seeker, with deadly results for those who aren't worthy—or perhaps not wicked enough. Not one for younger viewers, this is a slow-burn adult thriller with a strong sense of place and purpose. The Ninth Gate rewards patience and attention, especially for fans of mysteries, the occult, or anyone who's ever gotten lost in a bookshop and wondered what might be lurking in the rarest of volumes. So light a candle, pour a brandy, and dust off your first edition—because The Ninth Gate invites you into a world where stories hold secrets and books just might bite back.

We of course give some time and appreciation to Emmanuelle Seigner and Sylvie Testud as the supporting female characters of the movie, but it's hard to not focus on Cotillard's fully embodied transformation as Piaf from rebellious 20 year street singer to a woman broken down by addiction, illness and grief in her 40's.

Welcome the newest episode of Dark Discussions, your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that’s fantastic. Back in the 1960’s director Roman Polanski was able to establish himself as a top genre director. With the horror comedy, The Fearless Vampire Killers, the horror thriller, Repulsion, and the horror film Rosemary’s Baby, he became world famous. With the success of the latter, it was a film that helped bring the “devil” films about, where Satan was an actual being that would and will corrupt you. Years later, Polanski revisited this premise with the film from 1999 entitled The Ninth Gate. Rare book dealer, Dean Corso, is hired by mysterious businessman Boris Balkan to take his rare book, only three in the world, to Europe to compare with the other two copies. Rumor has it that the book was written by a disciple of Lucifer and could bring forth the devil. But Boris thinks his copy may actually be a forgery. Soon Dean finds himself wrapped in a mystery where a mysterious woman begins to follow him and the owners of the other two books die mysteriously. Is the myth about the book actually true? Starring Johnny Depp along with a strong supporting cast including Lena Olin, Frank Langella, Emmanuelle Seigner, and James Russo. The movie was based on a book entitled The Club Dumas by Arturo Pérez-Reverte. With its simple yet curious plot, and its very ambiguous ending, the film received mixed reviews by critics and audience alike. Dark Discussions takes a look at this curiosity and gives their opinions. As always we welcome your comments: darkdiscussions@aol.com (written email or attached mp3 files) WWW.DARKDISCUSSIONS.COM

Biopics come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Olivier Dahan's film “La Vie en Rose” detailing the life of Edith Piaf, one of France's greatest singers and international stars, is a whirlwind of a film. Unlike biopics that tell the story linearly, this one wraps its audience in and proceeds to take them on a wild ride all through Piaf's sadly short life, not so much focused on chronology as much as an emotional journey. It's a brazen way to tell the story but one that mostly works. Join us — Pete Wright and Andy Nelson — as we conclude our 4-part Guess the Connection series with Dahan's 2007 Oscar-winning film “La Vie en Rose.” We talk about Marion Cotillard's performance, which drives this film and is, in our minds, the reason to watch it. We touch on the other performers, notably Gerard Depardieu and Emmanuelle Seigner, but how all of them are truly dwarfed by Cotillard's performance. We discuss the nature of biopics and how this story structure works in the world of this subgenre, then debate which type of biopic we find more successful. We chat about the cinematography by Tetsuo Nagata and how great it looks, along with several specific scenes that unfold in very creative ways. And we talk about Piaf's songs and Christopher Gunning's score, looking at the balance between the two and how the film doesn't feel the need to overwhelm us with every Piaf song out there. It's a strong story because of Piaf's life and Cotillard's performance and we have a great time talking about it. Tune in! Hey! You know what would be awesome? It's a strong story because of Piaf's life and Cotillard's performance and we have a great time talking about it. Tune in!* * *Hey! You know what would be awesome? Rarely does a film truly take you into somebody's head for almost the entire film. Sure, you get POVs here and there in films, but it's a tricky tool to use, especially for longer periods of time. When Ronald Harwood hit on this in-the-head technique for his adaptation of Jean-Dominique Bauby's biography, it was exactly what the story needed to be told as a film. Enter Julian Schnabel, an artist/filmmaker who brought his own intuitive magic to the directing of it, and you end up with 2007's "The Diving Bell and the Butterfly," a stunningly gorgeous film that's as powerful a story of human resilience and beauty as it is a difficult film to watch because of the subject — a man living with locked-in syndrome. Join us — Pete Wright and Andy Nelson — as we continue our foreign language series with this brilliant film. We talk about our feelings of the movie and how powerful it is yet how difficult it can be to watch and why. We chat about the unique techniques Schnabel brings to the table in the making of the film and why they work so well with this story. We discuss the actors — Mathieu Amalric, Max von Sydow, Emmanuelle Seigner, Marie-Josée Croze and more — and how they all bring an amazing personal strength to the film. We talk about Janusz Kaminski's beautiful cinematography and how well it lends itself to the telling of this story. We bring up the novel Bauby's widowed girlfriend wrote about her experience and talk about why she got virtually left out of the film. And we look at the critical reception this film had worldwide, even if it struggled to bring in the bucks. It's a glorious poem of a film and one worth talking about. Definitely check it out then tune in! Hey! You know what would be awesome? If you would drop us a positive rating on iTunes!
