Welcome to the What's Next! Podcast with Tiffani Bova. With the summer Olympics underway, I thought it fitting to return to an inspiring conversation I shared with Olympic Medalist Bonnie St. John. At the age of 5, Bonnie had her right leg amputated. And once you listen to this podcast, you will understand, there was no way that was going to stop her. At the age of 19, she became the first African-American to win medals at the 1984 Winter Paralympics in Innsbruck Austria. Bonnie was appointed by President Clinton as a director for Human Capital Issues on the White House National Economic Council and went on to represent the United States as a member of President Obama's official delegation to the 2010 Paralympic Winter Games in Vancouver and the 2016 Paralympic summer Games in Rio de Janeiro. Bonnie is also a Leadership Consultant for multiple Fortune 500 companies, the CEO of the Blue Circle Leadership Institute, and a best-selling author of seven books, including How Great Women Lead: A Mother-Daughter Adventure into the Lives of Women Shaping the World, and her latest title Micro-Resilience: Minor Shifts for Major Boosts in Focus, Drive, and Energy! I am thrilled to have Bonnie St. John on the podcast! THIS EPISODE IS PERFECT FOR… anyone! If you want to overcome your own personal talk track that the obstacles you face are insurmountable, then this is for you. I can't think of a better way for you to spend thirty minutes of your time than listening to “one of the five most inspiring women in America!” (NBC Nightly News) TODAY'S MAIN MESSAGE… today's episode is a fantastic reminder to always use your challenges, your obstacles, and your unique experiences to become a better leader. Great leaders take cues from the potential connections that can form all around them to change the way they think and therefore lead. Today, we're looking at those connections and how to constantly look for the small, subtle changes in your day-to-day behavior that can help you become a better leader. WHAT I LOVE MOST… Bonnie taking my Bullish and Bearish scenario from just “robots having their own Olympics,” to having “cyborgs” be the answer. I think it's a great example of Bonnie's amazing sense of humor, and I loved learning more about her, her humility, and all the amazing things she's been able to accomplish in her life (and career) thus far. It was a real treat learning more about what makes the legendary Bonnie St. John such a special human being.

‘With multicultural women, we see that most of the time they are like, I will be just like everyone else, I will be talented and work hard and my work will speak for myself. It's not easy for these women to deal with these issues. Being intentional about getting the assistance you need, setting your goals and moving up .. How do you use your difference as an asset and leverage it as an advantage for your company?' In Episode 30, I am joined by Bonnie St. John, CEO of Blue Circle Leadership Institute, to discuss the specific barriers and challenges that multicultural women face in climbing up the corporate ladder, building trust across multicultural differences, and engaging leaders to support them. Bonnie's interest in DEI has been shaped by her life experiences as a Paralympic athlete, a Rhodes Scholar, a best-selling author, a White House Official and an entrepreneurial businesswoman. For over twenty years, Bonnie has led seminars, workshops and executive coaching, and has circled the globe as a keynote speaker and Fortune 500 leadership consultant. Her desire to lead with the sincere intention to make a difference is evident through her journey to find her strengths and overcome prejudices. She was the first African-American ever to win medals in Winter Olympic competition, taking home a silver and two bronze medals in downhill skiing. Through her work as the CEO of Blue Circle, she has worked to deeply understand the barriers faced by multicultural women, designing a powerful development program that gets to the heart of a much-needed conversation. We explore five core components of the Blue Circle Leadership program that support women to overcome these barriers: - Trust and informal networking: navigating across differences to create a sense of trust and comfort that doesn't come as naturally between a senior white male and junior multicultural woman. - Telling and selling your value: cultural differences for multicultural women mean that they don't feel comfortable ‘bragging'. - Sponsorship: addressing the informal network issue, and ensuring multicultural women can equip others to speak out for them, making it easier for others to help them out. - Strategic networking: moving multicultural women to the next level by equipping them with mentors, sponsors, who can make an introduction and open the door for them. - Authentic Leadership: how multicultural women can understand what is unique about them and leverage it for their organisation. We discuss her book and the importance of using science to help teams be more resilient. The focus here is on the little things that we do that makes us more resilient immediately. As Bonnie shares, discomfort doesn't only occur for white leaders who want to sponsor multicultural women, it happens both ways, even those who are from similar cultures feel uncomfortable due to expectations to stand in line and to adhere to cultural norms, almost more than the white male. As such, leaders need to move beyond discomfort and be intentional about providing support for multicultural women and working towards building an inclusive environment. Lastly, Bonnie speaks on the internal struggles she faced when she made the decision to specialise in helping multicultural women become leaders. This was primarily based on her desire as a businesswoman to succeed on a broader stage, and not on a small market that focuses on multicultural women. Despite this, her sincere determination to help those like her is evident through her work, helping forge the path for multicultural women who are stuck at the entry rungs in their career due to their ethnicity and gender. Learn the five keys to building success for your business. Resources Break free from Instagram dependence with Jamie's Social Expansion 6-week group course! Read about the effects of 20 minutes of exercise on your brainpower in this NCBI paper! Episode Highlights [03:30] Resilience in Success “Success does not come from continuously winning. Success comes from challenges, comes from figuring out that things aren't working exactly how you want, finding yourself getting stuck sometimes, but also, of course, celebrating those big wins” Resilience is essential to growing a successful business. Be aware and accept the things that are holding you back. Embrace the process and learn to bounce back and overcome adversities. Learn to celebrate the present. This includes sitting with and showing up on the hard days. [05:46] Your Best Self Is Your Business's Biggest Asset You are your business's lifeblood and life force. You are your business's biggest asset. It is a must to take care of your mind, body, and spirit. By doing so, you can be your best self. Resilience is actively seeking and dismantling patterns that slow you down, creating new systems, and adjusting your mindsets accordingly. [06:32] #1: Prioritize Your Health “You are going to get your best creativity, your best energy, and your best problem solving when you take care of your body first.” Your brain is affected by your routines, like your diet and sleep. Resilience comes from within. This is why it is crucial to prioritize your health. It only takes 10 minutes of movement to change your day. Take breaks to recharge! You can't be your best self if you're exhausted. [09:22] Incorporating Movement Daily You do not need an hour-long workout to reap the benefits of your mind. A study has found that it can only take as little as 5 to 20 minutes of movement a day to get your brain working at its best. You can use the Pomodoro Technique to create breaks during your day. Take a stroll or dance in your living room. Think about how you plan and execute movement throughout the day. Overextending and overworking yourself can have detrimental effects. Take breaks. Like a muscle, you can't be using your mind continuously. It needs rest too. [14:28] #2 Think of Failure as a Key to Success Challenges and failures are a part of the road to success. No one can relate to someone who's never struggled. Acknowledge problems but do not dwell on them. Show up and be solution-oriented instead. The Scarcity vs. Abundance Paradigm: we are neither abundant nor scarce all the time. Our focus should be on finding ways to activate ourselves during scarcity. Be mindful of your mind and body's current state. Ask yourself, "Why am I feeling scarcity?" Then pull yourself out of it. “The more we talk to ourselves in a positive way, the more we're going to be able to flip that script a little more easily.” [19:59] #3: Embrace the Power of Regular Self-Reflection Review where you spend your time and energy regularly. Self-reflection is how you build resilience in the long term. Self-trust comes from having a more profound inner knowing of who you are. Cultivate a resilience mindset. What does your best self look like? Reflect on your life so you can address issues you encounter. Ask yourself, “Where do I feel stuck right now?” Then, try to find an activating step to alleviate your dilemma. You are the energy of your business, and you want to preserve that. Don't neglect your mental health for your business! [24:40] #4: Creating an Ironclad Structure for your Business Step 1: Do not be dependent on a single channel. Instead, choose your channels and make sure they represent you well. Remember that you are creating an empire of what you do. You do not have to have a website to start a business. But you have to have one to scale a business. Step 2: Be inclusive in treating your email subscribers. Make them feel like they are part of an inner circle. Step 3: Maximize your social media for brand awareness and conversion. Create a structure — an ecosystem for your business — where you allow yourself to be independent and not hold on tightly to one platform. [31:56] #5: Celebrating Yourself and Savoring Celebrations People are always on the lookout for the next thing and very seldom in the present. We are often only present when in pain. Celebration is about presence. It's about honoring all the work you've done. We do not only celebrate big wins. It can be as simple as getting through a workout or getting a fantastic cup of coffee in the morning. “All of these are wins. All of these tell us and our subconscious that we can keep winning. We can keep celebrating. We're not going to just continue to move into the next stress, the next thing we have to do.” Write down five gratitudes every single day. It gives you a better appreciation of now. Find people you are ready to celebrate with and will make you want to continue to move. Today I'm getting you a strategy that will boost your confidence in 2 minutes. That's right. It's a simple step you can take to increase your feelings of confidence, well-being and focus! It's a concept straight out of the growing field of study known as “Micro-Resilience.” These tools enable you to create “positive psychological changes which lead to more energy, engagement and joy in the face of life's challenges. And who doesn't want more energy, engagement, and joy in their lives? So let's get to this! Listen To The Podcast: RESOURCES: DREAM THINK DO Episode 172: Post Traumatic Growth - www.mitchmatthews.com/172 BOOK SUGGESTION: Micro-Resilience: Minor Shifts for Major Boosts in Focus, Drive and Energy by Bonnie St. John RESEARCH: Cuddy, A. J. C., Schultz, S. J., & Fosse, N. E. (April 01, 2018). P-Curving a More Comprehensive Body of Research on Postural Feedback Reveals Clear Evidential Value for Power-Posing Effects: Reply to Simmons and Simonsohn (2017). Psychological Science, 29, 4, 656-666. MORE ABOUT THE EPISODE: We're talking about “Micro-Resilience” and “Power Poses” in this episode. Since we're all about helping you to dream bigger, think better and do more of what you were put on the planet to do… I'm always looking to experiment with ways to increase our resilience. Some strategies lend themselves to what's called, “Pre-Traumatic Growth” by Bonnie St. John in her book, “Micro-Resilience: Minor Shifts for Major Boosts in Focus, Drive, and Energy.” These are positive psychological changes that lead to more energy, engagement, and joy in the face of life's challenges. And who doesn't want more energy, engagement, and joy in their lives? Specifically… who doesn't need a quick boost of energy and confidence when we're heading into a potentially stressful situation: Maybe it was a situation at work: Getting ready for a presentation Going into a difficult conversation Prepping for a job interview Or maybe it was a DREAM THINK DO Scenario: Walking into a NEW class you've always wanted to take and finally signed up Pitching your IDEA to that person who might be able to help you make it happen Finally asking her THAT question In this QUICK DTD episode, we're going to talk about something that's been labeled “Power Poses.” It's a technique in which people stand in a way that a “powerful” or “assertive” might stand or hold themselves. By doing so, some researchers have found these “poses” actually increases a sense of confidence and focus. The idea of “Power Posing” was first named and described in a paper by Dana Carney, Amy Cuddy, and Andy Yap in the journal, Psychological Science. In their initial research, Carney, Cuddy, and Yap asserted that “High-Power Poses” produced an increase in testosterone (which causes an increased sense of confidence and focus) and a decrease in cortisol (which tends to reduce a sense of anxiety). These researchers have continued to produce studies and books on the subject. Now, I'll be the first to admit that some of their underlying science has been disputed. And some researchers really push back on this concept. BUT… that's where our “experiment” will come in. I want you to give it a try. I can tell you that since I don't have an easy way to check my own testosterone or cortisol, I'm not 100% sure my rates change in the slightest. BUT I can tell you that I've been utilizing the “Power Poses” for the last year or more… and it's made a difference. And even though some researchers might poo this and/or consider it a placebo effect… I can tell you that I've benefited from it significantly. So, I wanted to share it with you! In this episode, I'll walk you through some specifics and scenarios… then I want you to try it out. Comment below and let me know what you think! Real deal… hocus pocus… or something in between? I can't wait to hear from YOU! Comment below and let me know!
