Each Halloween season, All Things Judicial releases a special "Fright Court" episode, where the focus turns to ghostly legends associated with North Carolina's courthouses and legal community. IThis year, we focus on courthouse ghosts in New Hanover and Mitchell counties, and dive into the folklore of the 1866 murder of Laura Foster and subsequent trial and execution of her accused killer, Tom Dula (Dooley). This story became a worldwide pop culture phenomenon beginning in 1958 when the Kingston Trio released a murder ballad which reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart."I've always believed that the hanging of Tom Dooley here in our little town of Statesville, North Carolina is the most widely recognized execution in U.S. history," said Steve Hill, curator of the Statesville Historical Collection. "Everybody wanted to make a dollar off of Tom Dooley while they could, and a lot of people did." The first segment of this episode is an interview with John Hirchak, who, along with his wife Kim, operate the Ghost Walk of Old Wilmington and The Black Cat Shoppe. Hirchak shares stories about three spirits who occupy the historic New Hanover County Courthouse, and we discuss possible explanations for hauntings. The second segment is a dramatic reading of an article published by the Mitchell County Historical Society which details firsthand accounts of seeing and hearing a ghost which haunts the historic Mitchell County Courthouse. In the third segment, we meet Margaret Ferguson Carter Martine from the Whippoorwill Academy and Village in Wilkes County. She recounts the Dooley story and shares her personal connection to a key figure in that historic event. Then we travel to Iredell County where we meet Keith Ryan, Director of the Historic Sharpe House. He shares details about May 1, 1868, the fateful day Tom Dooley was hanged in Statesville. In the final interview of this episode, we meet Steve Hill, curator of the Statesville Historical Collection. He provides insight into the worldwide impact of the Dooley story. You can find out more about All Things Judicial or hear previous episodes in the Fright Court series by visiting NCcourts.gov.

James McHaffie needs no introduction, at least in the United Kingdom. His approach to bold onsight climbing, particularly free solos, is unparalleled. He's repeated the hardest sport climb in Wales, Big Bang (9a), sent Britain's hardest sea cliff, Dave MacLeod's The Longhope Direct (E10 7a), and made the first ascent of The Meltdown, a 9a slab in the slate quarries of his home in North Wales. And now he's written a book. But unlike many books released by elite climbers, this is not an autobiographical account of hard climbs in the face of relative adversity. Caff, as he prefers to be called, has written a fictional account of Eleri, a young woman amongst the slate quarries of North Wales who in the aftermath of a family suicide takes aim at British politicians who pushed for austerity and the conditions that led to such suffering. This conversation was such a gift. We all unlock our voices at just the right time. As if by fate, we recognize the value of speech and utilize it to, ultimately, connect to one another. Earth Groans have fully realized their voice as an aggressive sonic outlier steeped in both metallic precision and hardcore chaos. As the vision of frontman Jeremy Schaeffer, the South Dakota outfit emerges with a potent and personal signature style that's equally catchy and cathartic. After tallying millions of streams and building a devout fan base, the band amplifies its message louder than ever on the 2023 Tongue Tied EP [Solid State Records]. The EP holds a special significance for Schaeffer as it tells his story via the very title…“I was actually born tongue tied,” he states. “I had skin all the way up to my teeth, and I couldn't move my tongue at all. They performed the surgery right away and freed my tongue completely. Throughout my life, it has been a metaphor. I've always had a hard time fitting into the community I'm in. This whole record refers to a person finding his or her voice. I found my voice through music. It's how I've been able to communicate what's on my heart and find my true calling. My dad always said, ‘Ironically, you don't talk a whole lot, but your music is really loud'.”Earth Groans initially incited shockwaves through heavy music out of South Dakota with the Renovate EP in 2017. They buzzed out of the local scene and clawed their way into the international consciousness with the Rahab EP [2018], Prettiest of Things EP [2020], Waste EP [2020], and The Body EP [2021]. The latter gained traction on streaming platforms as the band earned plugs from HM Magazine, The PRP, Lambgoat, and many more. Along the way, they performed with the likes of August Burns Red on the popular Christmas Burns Red Festival and packed venues on tour coast-to-coast. Working with producer Ryan Leitru [For Today], Earth Groans honed their sound in 2022.“Ryan helped us preserve the heavy and chaotic elements, while enabling us to cast a wider net,” he goes on. “It's Earth Groans, but it could appeal to a bigger audience with a little more atmosphere and melody.”The first single “Overgrown” seesaws between a trudging groove and wrecking ball riffing enhanced by airy sonics. It culminates on a crushing chorus with the blunt force of a battering ram.“It's about feeling stuck in the position you are in and not being able to fully use your talents,” he explains. “I've gotten to a place where I'm trying to figure out what I'm doing with my life. I got stuck in this complacency, and I wasn't really progressing. It's a song of frustration.”Then, there's “Over The Edge.” The song's bulldozing barrage subsides on a melodic riff and hummable hook with a message of empowerment as he promises, “I won't let this passion turn to poison.”“It's about staying true to what you're doing and not losing the passion,” he elaborates. “For me, I started doing music because of the passion I had behind it. You can't let that go.”On “Same Blood,” mangled synths dissolve into pummeling guitar and a punk-style gallop. It confronts “racism, homophobia, and discrimination” head-on. The title track “Tongue Tied” commences with a clean intro only to snap into a frenetic onslaught of double-bass, jarring screams, and head-spinning fretwork. “It's the literal story of coming into this world without the ability to speak and finally finding it,” he says.Tongue Tied culminates on the aural exorcism of “Discordant Symphony,” which projects the central theme at full blast with a guttural growl.“This track brings the EP full circle,” he notes. “It's all about using the abilities that God gave you to do good and make the world a better place. Series: All! Pre-series message (Easter)Scripture: Matthew 28:1-10Title: Why the Resurrection of Jesus Christ Matters TodayBottom Line: When we come and see what Jesus has done, we will go tell the world why he has come.OpenYears ago, a young member of our (Nicky Gumbel's church in England) congregation at HTB had a job working in the library of a major national newspaper. This newspaper kept files of old cuttings about every well-known person. The files were kept in rows of long shelves and were separated into ‘living people' and ‘dead people'.One day, the young man was looking through the files of dead people and came across a large file marked ‘Jesus Christ'. He glanced over his shoulder to check that no one was looking and quickly moved the file from the ‘dead people' section to the ‘living people' section.Jesus Christ is alive. He is risen from the dead. To anyone looking for him among files of dead people, the angels would say, ‘Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here; he has risen!' (Luke 24:5–6).Mary Magdalene - Jesus cast out 7 demons from herMary mother of James “Other Mary” - Mother of James the lesser (disciple, son of Alpheus)The women…Appear to be the last to leave the tomb on Friday (along with Joseph of Arimathea) and the first to arrive at the tomb Sunday morning (besides the angels and guards, of course)Were prepared to anoint Jesus' wrapped and partially anointed corpse (Mark 16:1)Meet the angel who's perched there waiting for them, his job almost complete (Angel = messenger)Unconcerned with guards but very concerned with angelReceive the message from God via angel about what just happened “Don't be afraid”I know you're looking for Jesus“Who was crucified”“He's not here ; he has risen (has been raised)“Just as he said” (he would be)“Come and see”“Go quickly and tell”“Now I've told you.”As a result of seeing what they saw, They obeyed promptly and completely becauseAfraid yet filled with joyRan to tell his disciples (brothers)Ran into Jesus suddenly (though I doubt it hurt very much;-))Are greeted by Jesus casually and familiarityRespond to his humanity (clasp his resurrected feet) and worship his divinityAre still afraid and filled with joy; it's dangerous to oppose the Romans or Jewish leaders; hard to be women in a male-dominated culture; they had little power and influence; would anyone believe their story?Go and tell the brothers to go to Galilee where they'd all see Jesus again—resurrected and fully alive!Key applications“Don't be afraid” is a command to trust the Lord so fully that fear is unnecessary. Both the angel and the Lord command this. Why not:It won't help or change anything to be afraid (Matt 6:25-34)It will keep you from seeking JesusIt will discourage obedience to JesusSeek first his kingdom and his righteousness (Matt 6:33); this is the antidote to fearCome and see—see the empty tombJesus, who was crucified for 6 hours (after being tortured nearly to death and carrying the crossbar until he couldn't anymore) died publicly. Then wrapped tightly in a mummy-like combination of fabric, spices and ointments to keep it all together begins. His body is gone when they look, but not stolen. His enemies could have stolen and then revealed the body later to prove not resurrected; clearly they didn't; instead they accused the disciples of stealing itHis friends could have stolen the body (no, not really) but they'd be perpetuating a lie; why would they all willingly die for that lie? What's the point? No one is taking the body of Jesus unwrappedIt wasn't unwrapped but it's like his body just evaporated leaving the shroud in tact; headpiece neatly foldedNo one else has been inside. Angel opens it up for these women first. (Guards outside in shock or fainted)Come to believe that Jesus has in fact risen from the dead. Historically confirmed by friendly and enemy sources (Josephus, Tacitus, Apostles)“Go and tell”What you sawEmpty tombResurrected JesusWhat he saidDon't be afraid (though tempted)Go to Galilee where you will see meCling and worship to the crucified Jesus (humanity; die together i.e. baptism) and resurrected Jesus (divinity; worship him)ConclusionBottom Line: When we come and see what Jesus has done, we will go tell the world why he has come. What do I want you to know? The Gospel: Jesus, the Son of God, took on flesh, was tempted as we are, yet did not sin, died on the cross (in our place) for our sins so that we could live in his place as his brothers and sisters. He was raised up by the Father vindicating his life and death and showing the Father's pleasure over his obedience. What do I want you to do?Surrender your whole life to Jesus Christ and let him forgive you, cleanse you, free you from sin and death, shame and guilt, and hell itself. Do this by grace through faith. Walk with the rest of us as we learn how to do just that together.Pray and Lord's SupperAnother picture. Like baptism, a commanded ordinance we perform. This one we do regularly. This one reminds us of the gospel as does baptism. It doesn't save. It does sanctify as it reminds us why we live this way.References/Bibliography:“Preaching the Word” Commentary, Douglas Sean O'Donnell, Edited by Kent Hughes“The Bible Knowledge Commentary” by Walvoord, Zuck (BKC)“the Bible Exposition Commentary” by Warren Wiersbe (BEC)"Studies in the Sermon on the Mount" by Martin—Lloyd Jones“Exalting Jesus in The Sermon on the Mount” by Daniel Aiken (CCE)“Exalting Jesus in Matthew” by David Platt (CCE)“The Sermon on the Mount: Kingdom Life in a Fallen World” by Sinclair FergusonOutline Bible, D WillmingtonDA Carson, Jesus' Sermon, 45NIV Study Bible (NIVSB)ESV Study BibleESV Gospel Transformation Bible (GTB)"Kingdoms in Conflict" by Charles Colson

So they throw it out.”“I was very frustrated by the issue of spices and so I started to kind of try and solve that problem.”“Buying things once and refilling it with a product and packaging, has to account for a lot of ways.” “Evermill blend is what we think of as the most universal blend. It's salty, garlicky, it's got a little bit of heat, a little bit of lemon in it. It's one of those you can throw it on a chicken, you can put it on some fish, you can put it in a salad dressing, roast vegetables with it. It just has kind of a catch all for everything.”“Then we came up with the teardrop idea of all the jars  self-aligning because if we were going to charge this much for a spice rack and there's going to be this beautiful thing that was so well thought of, I would hate for it to be ruined by misaligned labels.”“We started this company 13 months ago in October of last year. And our PR was like ‘who's your number one goal?' And it was Oprah. Oprah's everyone's number one goal. And then a couple months ago I heard back, asking for us to send more product and we said of course, then shortly after we found out that we were selected.”“Our ideal customer was a host and just like constantly having people over for dinner, and being a very nurturing, generous host. And so that's who's kind of embodied in and who we want to create products for.”“In terms of getting a company off the ground, you just gotta do it.”“I mean, it's a 24 hour job, you are constantly working, there's not a lot of breaks, there's not a lot of vacations. You can't really. We're a three person company now. So, you know, if someone goes off, there's not a team to watch what's going on.”“Right now we've got a great set of 12 and 18, and they're the building blocks of most spice blends. So you can build any blend you want from these. So getting to the point where people can choose what they want is their number one piece of customer feedback.”“Just do it and start and just keep working at it. Just don't give up. It's going to get there eventually.”

My guest today is Sangu Delle. Sangu is an entrepreneur, an investor, author, and someone who is deeply rooted in Pan-African ideology. His latest book Making the futures: Young entrepreneurs in a dynamic Africa explored similar themes and topics that I've often explore on this podcast. So it's not surprising that we started the conversation in this episode talking about the book. We discussed the challenges and opportunities of building a business in Africa. We also deep-dived into the competitive advantage of raising capital and having a longer runway as a startup, the outsized importance of foreign venture capital in African early-stage businesses and the role of government in facilitating a successful startup ecosystem. This episode is packed as we move from one serious topic to another. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.On this episode, we spoke aboutSangu's book and why he wrote itHis investment thesis on Africa and her economic growthWhy it's not the best ideas that win and find out what winsThe relationship between reputation, intentionality and luck(grace) and their impact on the probability of successHow philanthropy and unhindered dreams helped him achieve his goalsThe outsized importance of government and foreign investor in facilitating the African startup ecosystem.Recommended bookGuns, Germs, and Steel: The Fates of Human Societies By Jared Diamond

The last word usually leaves a lasting impression. It seems part of our design as human beings: we pay most attention to the first and the last thing more than the rest. We’ve come to the end of Psalm 119, and it’s time to hear the final word. Psalm 119:169-176 (Taw) is the last word and it returns us to our dependence on God, praising him and many of the great themes we've seen in this great psalm. If you are getting started in a relationship with God, trying to have a quiet time or seeking guidance at this point in your life, you're in the right place. In fifteen minutes (or less) you will listen to God's word for you, reflect on it and learn to pray to God as well as carry that word with you through the rest of your day. What a perfect way to get started! We've been praying through Psalm 119, the longest psalm of the Bible, which is an acrostic poem structured after the 22 letters of the Hebrew alphabet. We have listened to one or two stanzas at a time (8 verses each), and today we focus on the last (22nd) stanza -- taw. The letter taw allows you to turn any verb into a wish if you put it on the front, so in six of the eight verses that's what happens. This stanza also has several expressions of praise, which is similar to how the book of Psalms itself ends—with a note of praise. IThis stanza also restates the themes we’ve been hearing throughout Psalm 119: the poet is looking for understanding, for deliverance and for new life. The emphasis is on how much we depend on God, for salvation, to teach us to praise, for life itself. The last verse likens us to a lost sheep who needs to be sought out and returned to the right way, the way we have set our hearts on: following God in all his words and teachings. Finish writing out one stanza (8 verses) of Psalm 119 each day, and you'll be able to see more connections and reflect better on what God is saying. After you've written out the stanza for the day, use one verse from that section to meditate on throughout the day. What petition do you need to make of God? Give me understanding, deliver me, or teach me to praise you? Make that your application today. We can't exhaust the riches that are in these verses, but you can go deeper into them on your own using our four step process. You can download the helpsheet that details and demonstrates the four step process we use on First Fifteen using Psalm 1.If you want to get more daily encouragement you can follow me on Twitter @WordofPrayer15. You can also find us on Facebook at Word of Prayer 15.You can get a copy of the book God Help Me Grow: Learning to Pray through the Psalms on Amazon (or the ebook) so you can pray all of the first 30 psalms in the book of Psalms. Psalm 111:1, 5 (AMP)PRAISE THE Lord! ….. _ 5 _ _ He has given food and provision _ _ to those who reverently and worshipfully fear Him; _ _ He will remember His covenant forever _ and imprint it [on His mind].At the beginning of the lockdown we have emphasised God's Protection. Now, after the lockdown it's time to emphasise God's Provision. The Covid-19 lockdown and its ensuing lack of productivity has resulted in a considerable economic downturn. The effect of this economic downturn has not fully realised yet, largely due to a massive government spend-up.We are now in "faith territory" concerning God's provision for our livesThe need to walk by faith is stronger today than it was, say, last yearThis is a good time to look to God and His faithfulness in a renewed way, and build up our faith on His wonderful promises.Psalm 111:5 tells us that our God is a covenant-keeping God.Our God is also a prayer-answering God.When Jesus Christ died on the cross and shed His own blood, He confirmed God's New Covenant (Agreement) with His peopleThis covenant includes access to God's provision for our lives. Phil. 4:19God is able to fulfil His covenant with His people irrespective of the economy around us. (God is not limited by the economy of the world)Genesis 26:1–6 (NKJV)_ There was a famine in the land , besides the first famine that was in the days of Abraham. And Isaac went to Abimelech king of the Philistines, in Gerar. 2 Then the Lord appeared to him and said: "Do not go down to Egypt; live in the land of which I shall tell you._ _ 3 **Dwell in this land, _ and _ I will be with you and bless you** ; for to you and your descendants I give all these lands, and_ _ I will perform the oath which I swore to Abraham your father. 4 And I will make your descendants multiply as the stars of heaven; I will give to your descendants all these lands; and in your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed;_ _ 5 because Abraham obeyed My voice and kept My charge, My commandments, My statutes, and My laws." 6 _ _ So Isaac dwelt in Gerar. _There was a famine in Canaan in Isaac's dayThe prevailing thinking of the day was that if things are tough in Canaan, just go down to Egypt (Abraham went to Egypt in a famine. Gen. 12:10)(The Nile Delta in Egypt [incl. Goshen] was very fertile even without rain)God told Isaac:Do not go down to Egypt (like your father did)Dwell in this land (even though there is a famine in this land)I will be with you and I bless you (despite the famine)The moral of the story:God is able to bless you and prosper you in post-Covid-19 (famine) daysYour prosperity is not determined by what's around you (your environment)Your prosperity is determined:By what's in youand by what's on youAbraham was a covenant man (Genesis 15:18)His son Isaac also became a covenant man with God (Genesis 17:7)The blessing of God also came on IsaacThe blessing of God also formed his thinking within himHidden Object Lesson:If your father is/was not a prosperous man, don't follow him to EgyptGod said: Live in the land of which I will tell you (Genesis 26:2)Do what I will show you, not what you saw your father do!Genesis 26:12–14 (NKJV) _ Then Isaac sowed in that land , and_ _ **reaped in the same year a hundredfold; _ and _ the Lord blessed him**._ _ 13 The man_ _ began to prosper , and_ _ continued prospering _ until he _ became very prosperous; 14 for he had possessions of flocks and possessions of herds and a great number of servants. So the Philistines envied him._Isaac sowed in the land & reaped a huge harvest despite the famineGod blessed himIsaac began to prosperHe continued prosperingUntil he became very prosperousGenesis 26:15–33 (NKJV)Now _ the Philistines had stopped up all the wells which his father's servants had dug in the days of Abraham his father , and they had filled them with earth._ _ 16 And Abimelech said to Isaac, "Go away from us, for you are much mightier than we." 17 Then Isaac departed from there and pitched his tent in the Valley of Gerar, and dwelt there._ _ 18 And_ _ **Isaac dug again the wells of water _ _which they had dug in the days of Abraham his father, for the Philistines had stopped them up after the death of Abraham. He called them by the names which his father had called them.** 19 Also_ _ Isaac's servants dug in the valley , and_ _ found a well of running water there. 20 But the herdsmen of Gerar quarreled with Isaac's herdsmen, saying, "The water is ours." So he called the name of the well Esek, because they quarreled with him._ _ 21 Then they dug another well , and they quarreled over that one also. So he called its name Sitnah._ _ 22 And_ _ **he moved from there and dug another well, _ _and they did not quarrel over it. So he called its name Rehoboth, because he said, "For now the Lord has made room for us, and we shall be fruitful in the land."** 23 Then he went up from there to Beersheba._ _ 24 And_ _ the Lord appeared to him the same night and said, "I am the God of your father Abraham; _ do not fear, for I am with you. I will bless you and multiply your descendants for My servant Abraham's sake." _ 25 So he built an altar there and called on the name of the Lord, and he pitched his tent there; and_ _ there Isaac's servants dug a well. 26 Then Abimelech came to him from Gerar with Ahuzzath, one of his friends, and Phichol the commander of his army._ _ 27 And Isaac said to them, "Why have you come to me, since you hate me and have sent me away from you?" 28 But they said, "We have certainly seen that the Lord is with you . So we said, 'Let there now be an oath between us, between you and us; and let us make a covenant with you,_ _ 29 that you will do us no harm, since we have not touched you, and since we have done nothing to you but good and have sent you away in peace._ _ You are now the blessed of the Lord. ' " 30 So he made them a feast, and they ate and drank._ _ 31 Then they arose early in the morning and swore an oath with one another; and Isaac sent them away, and they departed from him in peace. 32 It came to pass the same day that_ _ Isaac's servants came and told him about the well which they had dug, and said to him, "We have found water." _ _ 33 So he called it Shebah. Therefore the name of the city is Beersheba to this day._In that part of the world, wells of water meant "prosperity"The Philistines (satan) tried to stop Isaac's prosperity by filling in the wellsAbimelech became jealous & felt threatened by Isaac & sent him awayAfter Isaac moved away, he re-dug the wells of his father AbrahamHis servants dug another well & found water but the Philistines claimed itHis servants dug still another well but the Philistines claimed that one tooIsaac moved again and dug another well, this time he was able to keep itThen God appeared to him again and re-affirmed His blessing on his lifeAbimelech visited & said: We have certainly seen that the Lord is with youThen his servants dug still another well & found water once againIsaac called this new well "Shebah" which means "oath" or "seven"Proposition : Each well represents a business!Isaac wasn't satisfied when he "began to prosper"He continued to apply himself and "continued to prosper", until he "became very prosperous"Don't limit yourself or the blessing of God on your lifeRobert Kiyosaki , author of the book called "Rich dad, poor dad" speaks about the 7 streams of income of millionaires.Earned Income – (wages/salary)Profit Income (business)Interest Income (investment)Dividend Income (shares)Rental Income (property)Capital Gains (property)Royalty Income (intellectual property)Ecclesiastes 11:2 (NIV)_ Invest in seven ventures, _ yes, in eight; you do not know what disaster may come upon the land.Be: Diligent Proverbs 10:4Industrious 1 Kings 11:28Resourceful Proverbs 1:4 GNBFrugalGenerous Proverbs 11:25Don't be: Lazy Proverbs 10:4Lavish yourselfOverly cautiousHave: An above-average work ethicAn above-average decision-making processThere is a need to disciple God's people in the area of:MoneyMoney managementMoney makingLuke 16:8 (KJV)… the children of this world are in their generation wiser than the children of light.

Precept upon precept: How to understand the Bible. In today's episode we look at how to properly interpret scripture.  When we speak of scriptural truth or biblical truth, we are often met with the question, how do you know you have the truth?  Indeed, everyone claims to have the truth, don't we? iThis includes the over 40,000 Christian denominations. What if I tell you that there is only one way to arrive at truth in the scriptures?Isa 28:9  Whom shall he teach knowledge? and whom shall he make to understand doctrine? them that are weaned from the milk, and drawn from the breasts.  Isa 28:10  For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little: If we realize how the scriptures are written, then we will get the understanding. The scriptures are written so as to be revealed spiritually to those who seek. That means one cannot just pick up the scriptures and study to get the understanding.Neither can one get the understanding unless the Most High allows us to. Then we must know that it is not written serially (in order) like a story book. It is written like a puzzle, and parts have to be fitted together. When we fit the pieces together,  then we get to Bible truth. Otherwise what we will be doing is taking a verse and then giving our own private interpretation, and of course we:2Pe_1:20  Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. So the importance of precepts: matching scriptures here, to scriptures there, is what we look at in this episode.  When we do so, we will be surprised at what we learn!
