Attention and focus may be at the top of every employer's list and every woman's dating requirements. We live in a society that highly values attention and praises anyone who can focus long enough to accomplish the seemingly impossible. Yet, many of us continue to struggle with both. Mindfulness is viewed as something that would be nice but very few are actually mastering the practice of being present and attentive in the here and now. With stress and overwhelm overtaking us at every turn in the day our minds are flooded and vulnerable to digital attacks and sabotage initiated by our own self. Amishi Jha is a professor of psychology at University of Miami and author of the new book, Peak Mind: Find Your Focus, Own Your Attention, Invest 12 Minutes a Day. She's joining Lisa to dispel the rumours that improving your attention and meditation skills means that you have to clear your mind. She's calling it out, and giving simple strategies and techniques you can start using before this episode ends. It's time to take back your attention, regain your focus and do it in 3 simple steps. Jha Effect on Emotions On the fourth of July, we were in Florida, where my father-in-law lives. We went out on his boat and there were a bunch of boats right on the beach. My wife is Puerto Rican and there was music and six boats. There were all these Puerto Ricans singing and dancing and having a great time. All of a sudden I began to recognize that emotionally, I was really beginning to miss Gabriel. That's when mindfulness kicked in. I knew at that moment that I needed to feel what I was feeling. And because of what was going on all around me, I could do it without interrupting or affecting anything else going on. Everybody was either in a floaty right on the beach or in the shallow water. So I just bobbed 20 or 30 feet away from everybody, and nobody even noticed because of all the fun happening. And I put my intention on what I was feeling about my son, and I wept. I allowed myself to be intentional at that moment and just think about him and what I missed about him. Tears came down my face and that lasted for probably about 30 to 40 minutes. I used mindfulness to become present at that moment. So to me, it's a simple, but profound example of how mindfulness can really help you manage your life and even your emotions. Thoughts on Breathing There's a neuroscientist that I'm listening to, that actually has an episode that just came out this last week, and it's like a two-and-a-half-hour episode on breathing. I'm certainly no expert, although I've been aware for some time that the way we breathe is incredibly critical. If you're being mindful of what you're feeling as you're doing things, I can feel my chest even get a little bit tight, and my breathing changed a little bit. I grew up with asthma and had severe asthma up until my mid-20s. So I know what it's like to be in that position where you can't breathe at all and that weight that's on the inside of your chest. It's a very simple technique. I just breathe into my nostrils and blow out through my mouth. I just do that a few times. And I'm discovering now that I'm becoming a student of breath, that's actually one of the most effective tools that you can use to eliminate stress or anxiety. Suggested Resources Book: Peak Mind: Find Your Focus, Own Your Attention, Invest 12 Minutes a Day By Amishi P. Jha App: NSDR Protocol (Non-Sleep Deep Rest) Bullying Story I never got bullied myself but I do have a recollection of times where I bullied others. Back in those days, it wasn't this thing where I honed in on one person and bullied them every single day for months or years. It wasn't that, but also I don't want to belittle it. Even one time could have been enough to impact that person's life forever. Years later, I had an opportunity with at least one person through Facebook, I saw them, and I was able to apologize 20-30 years later for my part. Back in those days, I think some things were going on with my parent's marriage. If I'd had mindfulness, I think it would have made a huge difference, because I would have been able to just stop that angry emotion. And think through the consequence of punching somebody or just pushing them around or whatever the damage that could cause them. As I've gotten older, I've realized mindset truly is everything. I spend a lot of time in my courses and programs helping people see things from a different perspective so that they can create change in their lives. I even had one client say, “I would have paid five times as much to see this much change in my life.” I can change the way I look at just about anything if I'm willing to let go of what my ego wants and that's the harder part. Shifting your mindset really is a spiritual journey. There are two sides inside our emotional brain:the connected side, which is where positivity, our ability for clarity, and our sense of confidence are. Our power is all in that connected side. On the other side of the brain is the disconnected side and that's where our fear, guilt, worry, and all of those things that suck our energy are. That's where head trash lives.  Renie Cavallari says that the goal of life is to spend as much time as possible on the connected side. Back in the 1960s, doctors were not yet aware that physical exercise could improve cardiovascular health. Flash forward to today and scientists are proving that with the right mental training, we can change the structure of our brains resulting in improved memory, strengthened focus, better decision making, and even reduced stress and anxiety. Many of these studies have been conducted on groups of people who work in what are identified as “High-Demand” professions including soldiers and athletes. We know that the practice of law easily falls into this high-demand designation, so today we have brought in an expert to educate us on how we can integrate brain training into our lives in the same way we use a regular exercise program to strengthen our bodies. Dr. Amishi Jha is a professor of psychology at the University of Miami. The constant disruption of notifications can start to feel like you don't have ownership over your own mind. But solutions like avoiding technology for periods of time rely on external intervention rather than giving you control over your ability to concentrate. To go in-depth on this topic, I'm thrilled to have Dr. Amishi Jha on the show today. Dr. Jha is a neuroscientist and professor of psychology at the University of Miami. She's also the author of the bestselling book, Peak Mind: Find Your Focus, Own Your Attention, Invest 12 Minutes a Day. She is the author of Peak Mind: Find Your Focus, Own Your Attention, Invest 12 Minutes a Day*. In this conversation, Amishi and I explore the importance of our attention and why harnessing it is essential for leaders. We dive into the neuroscience and how our brain is similar to a computer in how much we can hold at one time. Plus, Amishi provides us several practical starting points if we wish to do a better job of placing our attention in the most useful places. Key Points Attention is powerful, fragile, and trainable. Our working memory is like the RAM inside a computer — there's only so much we can hold at a time. You experience what's in your working memory, even if that doesn't correlate to what's right in front of you. If your working memory is full, it blocks the ability to encode or whatever you are trying to learn. A key tactic is to be aware of what's in your working memory — and what you choose not to rewrite. Mindfulness practice can provide the white space for the space in our working memory that we need. I'm so glad you've joined me for a truly fascinating conversation with Dr. Amishi Jha. Dr. Jha is a professor of psychology at the University of Miami where she serves as the Director of Contemplative Neuroscience for the Mindfulness Research and Practice Initiative, which she co-founded in 2010. Dr. Jha received her Ph.D. from the University of California–Davis and postdoctoral training at the Brain Imaging and Analysis Center at Duke University.    Dr. Jha's work has been featured at NATO, the World Economic Forum, and The Pentagon. She has received coverage in The New York Times, NPR, TIME, Forbes, and more. Her book, PEAK MiND: Find Your Focus, Own Your Attention, Invest 12 Minutes a Day, covers the crisis of attention, how to tap into the brain's attention system for peak performance, how to combat our addiction to thinking, and how to develop “mental armor” against anxiety, distraction, and bias.   I loved my conversation with Dr. Jha and while there is so much to take away from what she shared, here are some of my favorite highlights: Want to improve the way you are or how you do something? Learn to focus on the granular components of the outcome you want and with time, you'll will yourself to achieve it; Vulnerabilities such as stress, threat, and negative mood hijack attention and degrade attention, so paying attention to your attention is one of the most beneficial practices you can do in order to befriend your own mind; Remember that thoughts are not facts, so if you find yourself overwhelmed with feelings of stress or anxiety, be mindful and pay attention to what is happening in your body and mind; Though our society has come to associate multitasking with something desirable, it truly isn't'; Just as we've come to think of exercise as an important component of self-care, mindfulness training should also fall into a daily practice;   Healthy living is holistic living, paying attention to all of the aspects that being human entails: psychological well-being, social connections, physical well-being, and connection to something bigger.     Want to learn more about Dr. Jha and her work? There are news stories and articles on how we have the attention span of a goldfish. You might have heard that with the Internet, we can now only focus for 8 seconds at a time. The good news is there are no studies to back this up. There is also a common belief that we use only 10% of our brain. The entire brain is being used, but some parts are more activated than others. Having a peak mind is more about knowing where your attention is than whether or not you are hyper-focused or hyper-vigilant.  In episode 42 of The Incrementalist, you will learn: 1. We miss out on 50% of our lives because our attention is scattered and distracted. 2. In a given experience, moment or task, it's important to ask yourself: Where is your attention now? Is it where you want it to be? 3. A wandering mind is not a real problem if you have meta-awareness or metacognition, i.e. to be aware of your awareness, or to pay attention to your attention.4. The three different types of attention - a) The Flashlight is when your attention is more singular, narrow and focused on a particular thing. It gives you privileged information, selects and filters out, and emphasizes content. b) The Floodlight is when your attention is broad, receptive and open to whatever is happening now. It does not privilege any information, is open to inputs, and emphasizes time. c) The Juggler is the manager and executive control system. It interprets the information from the flashlight and floodlight systems and determines whether your goals and behavior are aligned. 5. Even when you get rid of all the digital distractions, you will still have attention problems. Getting bored with a task, for example, can steer us toward online entertainment if we don't know how to use boredom to our benefit.6. Being distractable is human. It makes sense from an evolutionary perspective. We need it to avoid danger and predators. The capacity to mentally time travel is useful for thinking, reflecting, planning, visualizing, and dreaming. But it also causes us to miss out on the moment, catastrophize about the future, ruminate on the past, or be preoccupied with things we don't control. This can lead to high stress, anxiety, brain fog and depleted attention. So, you need to train yourself to direct your focus on where it has to be.  7. Mindfulness training is key to developing your attention. Examples are:a) Focused attention on the breadthb) The S.T.O.P. practiceb) Open monitoring or open awareness meditation8) Invest at least 12 minutes a day on mental training exercises to declutter your mind and develop your attention span9) When you're too focused, you miss the big picture and the context of the situation.  If you're too open, you can become indecisive.  You need to have all three systems in play to perform at your peak. The flashlight lets you keep your eye on the ball, the floodlight helps you to scan the field, and the juggler allows you to stay in and win the game.  Read the transcript. Sources cited:  Amishi P. This week I'm joined by Dr. Amishi Jha! Dr. Amishi is a professor of psychology at the University of Miami and Director of Contemplative Neuroscience for the Mindfulness Research and Practice Initiative. She studies mindfulness meditation and writes about the observable affects it has on brains and our attention, and is the author of Peak Mind: Find Your Focus, Own Your Attention, Invest 12 Minutes a Day. In this episode Amishi explains in detail how our minds operate in terms of our focus and attention. What is happening neurologically at any given moment and how do our environment and our internal states affect this? How does mindfulness meditation affect this? The answer is…A LOT. If you had any skepticism around the power of meditation, allow Dr. Amishi to quell any suspicion and to, in fact, present you with the evidence. Of course, we discuss the spiritual and transcendental aspects of meditation, too, as we both believe there is more going on than we can currently measure. The potential is of what is and what could be is inspiring! Today, Commander Divine talks to Dr Amishi Jha about her work as a neuroscientist, studies on mindfulness training, and her recent book Peak Mind: Find Your Focus, Own Your Attention, Invest 12 Minutes a Day.   Dr. Amishi Jha is a professor of psychology at the University of Miami. She serves as the Director of Contemplative Neuroscience for the Mindfulness Research and Practice Initiative, which she co-founded in 2010. She received her Ph.D. from the University of California-Davis and postdoctoral training at the Brain Imaging and Analysis Center at Duke University. Dr. Jha's work has been featured at NATO, the World Economic Forum, and The Pentagon. She has received coverage in The New York Times, NPR, TIME, Forbes and more.   Key Takeaways:   Neuroplasticity, the ability for our brains to change and grow new neurons, is possible at any age. When our minds are functioning at their peak, we have full control of three types of attention that Dr. Amishi describes.  Taking a bird's eye view allows us to observe where our attention is. Focus is going to wander, but through practice we are able to bring the "flashlight" back to where we want it.  Multi-tasking is a myth. Our brains are able to switch quickly between tasks, but that depletes energy. Sometimes it is a necessary part of life, but mono-tasking is much more efficient, and should be the goal whenever possible.  Mindfulness training is transformative. Changes in brain activity are visible in functional MRis, but it's important to remember that just as changes in the body take time, changes in the brain take time. In Dr. Amishi Jha's studies, she saw results beginning after four weeks of training.  Links:  Amishi Jha - Pay attention like your life depends on it.   Instagram   Twitter   Linkedin

Where is your attention right now? Hopefully it's on these words – but if you're getting distracted and are contemplating what you'll have for dinner or running through your to-do list, please know that you are not alone. Today's guest shares research which shows that most of us are missing up to 50% of our lives. But if you'd like to change that for the better, you're in the right place.Dr Amishi Jha is a neuroscientist, professor of psychology at the University of Miami and author of the brilliant new book Peak Mind: Find Your Focus, Own Your Attention, Invest 12 Minutes A Day, which looks at the science of attention. She wants to help us all harness the power of our attention to better meet life's demands. And I know you're going to find her advice useful whether it's at work, at leisure or in your relationships.Amishi describes the three different types of attention: the Flashlight, the Floodlight and the Juggler. She explains how they all work together to keep us not just focused but also safe, productive and agile. What's most important, she explains, is developing the awareness to know what type of attention, or distraction, you're experiencing at any one time.We talk about factors which have a negative influence on our attention, namely stress, fear and lack of sleep. And how an inability to focus can not only be a consequence of poor mental health, but a cause as well. Often rumination, focusing too intently on our problems, can keep us in them. So how can we break free? This episode is packed with practical advice on optimising attention for all-round wellbeing and performance. Amishi's research has shown that, just as we might train our bodies in the gym, so too can we train our brains to direct our focus where we'll most benefit. And the good news is, we can experience incredible benefits in as little as 12 minutes a day.I really enjoyed this conversation and I hope you do too. Thanks to our sponsors: https://www.vivobarefoot.com/uk/livemorehttps://www.blublox.com/livemorehttp://www.athleticgreens.com/livemore Show notes available at https://drchatterjee.com/218 Support the podcast: Members get ad-free episodes and exclusive content including my take on the topics most requested by the FBLM community https://drchatterjee.com/membershipFollow me on https://www.instagram.com/drchatterjeeFollow me on https://www.facebook.com/DrChatterjeeDISCLAIMER: The content in the podcast and on this webpage is not intended to constitute or be a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. Dr. Amishi Jha received her Ph.D. from the University of California–Davis, is a professor of psychology at the University of Miami, and is the Cofounder and Director of Contemplative Neuroscience for the Mindfulness Research and Practice Initiative. It seems like our attention spans are getting shorter every year, but are they really, what can we do to improve our ability to focus, and how do we deal with the countless entities always clawing for our attention everywhere we look? What to Listen For Introduction and Dr. Amishi's origin story – 9:00 How does meditation better equip us to deal with everything that is fighting for our attention in daily life? What is attention and why should we care? – 19:24 What are the three components of attention and how do mindfulness practices influence our ability to pay attention? What mindfulness exercise can you start doing now to begin seeing the benefits of meditation? Are our attention spans actually getting shorter? How do we use our brain to combat our own lack of attention or focus? The Finder Flashlight Practice for developing focus – 31:20 What can you do to help your children learn to pay attention and focus? What advantages do people with ADD/ADHD have that people without it don't have? Improving focus while living under a lot of stress – 48:50 What 12-minute exercise can you do on a daily basis to boost your ability to focus, even in high stress, high demand situations and environments? Our ability to focus on something for an extended period of time is one of the significant differences between humans and other animals. However, like other animals we can easily be distracted and lose that focus. So what can we do in today's world where everything in our daily lives is fighting for our attention?
