Join Peregrine Director, Dr Rebecca Sng as she chats with CBT trainer and practitioner, Dr Chris Basten. This is a great way to really understand the foundations of the model and to get to grips with what real CBT is and is not. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Cass explains what Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), are and how these approaches fit within modern advances in neuroscience and nervous system regulation. She also explores the role of mindfulness and meditation, and the role of somatic therapies (like EFT, and EMDR), breathwork and yoga. 47% of Australians have had at least one chronic disease. We know very well that many of these diseases, including substance use disorders, are attributed to modifiable lifestyle factors. These factors include the 3Fs and 3Ss: • Fingers – smoking, alcohol, substance use • Feet - exercise • Fork – food • Stress • Sleep • Socialisation However, promoting health behaviour change is not an easy feat. One of the commonly used techniques apart from Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) is Motivational Interviewing (MI)

In this episode we explore the connection between thoughts, feelings, physical sensations and behaviour. Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) has been useful at helping us identify how our interpretations of a particular event, rather than the event itself, determines how we feel about it. It is our reaction to situations that make them problematic, not the situation itself. Most of the time something happens to us and we assume that the thing that happens to us makes us feel sad, upset, angry etc. What we often fail to pay attention to is that we have an underlying belief or belief system that assesses a situation and comes up with an interpretation. These interpretations frequently don't serve us well. This is true in relationships where our partners says or does something that we interpret as disrespectful, annoying or hurtful. Subsequently we may fight back or sulk and lick our wounds. It is also true in dating scenarios where you may chose to interpret another person's lack of response as a lack of interest. Understanding our underlying beliefs gives us more control over the outcome of a situation that we find frustrating. We have a choice in being offended for example. Thoughts, feelings, physical sensations and behaviours are in constant interaction with each other. For example, I might think that nobody likes me. I then feel sad or angry. I notice a sinking feeling in my stomach. As a result, I may decide to stay at home in order to avoid feeling bad about myself. This is in turn will generate thoughts that I am not worthy of liking and so on and so forth. In a CBT model the idea is to break this cycle. You can start for example to change the behaviour by going out more often. This might make you feel a bit better about yourself and can positively influence thoughts and feelings.
In this first episode of SURVIVING 101 we wanted to discuss a very important topic: mental health. Lorna Shannon Episode 2 On today's show, I interview Lorna Shannon. Lorna has an impressive list of credentials. Her background is in Nursing, Midwifery, and Family Planning (Sexual and Reproductive Health). She is certified in: Advanced Hypnotherapy, Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), and Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) as well as being a Master Life Coach. She specializes in Rapid Transformational Therapy (RTT) for Stress and Anxiety, Insomnia, Confidence & Self Esteem, Addictions, and Weight Issues. She has a BSc (Hons) in Health and Social Care, Post Graduate Diploma in Specialist Community Public Health Nursing (SCPHN), and Diplomas in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Applied Social Sciences, Health and Social Welfare, Criminology and Asthma. She has always been intrigued as to the reasons for different human behavior, which lead her to study: Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), and ultimately Rapid Transformational Therapy (RTT). RTT lets you review an issue, not re-live it and when you get to see things from a different perspective, you get to let them go. RTT is powerful, transformative, and life-changing. So change your thoughts - change your life! Lorna and I had a great discussion on the benefits of combining Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), and ultimately Rapid Transformational Therapy (RTT). I share how she used her form of therapy to help relieve my 10-year case of insomnia in one session followed by a nightly recording to retrain my brain. We discussed the long term detrimental effects long term insomnia has on the body. It literally touches every organ, can cause diabetes, hypertension, heart attack, depression, stroke, and even some forms of cancer. Long term insomnia left untreated can shorten your lifespan. Lorna shares how we can update our brain's software by using affirmations. She recommends present tense 3-4 words starting with “I am” … She says put it on your mirror with lipstick, put it on your screensaver. Repeat it often, the brain loves repetition. “Every behavior begins with a thought.” Don't use the possessive form of a pronoun unless it is something you WANT to own. Don't say “My depression, My anxiety, My insomnia. Be mindful of the words you say to yourself.. Your brain's software is listening. What are the dangers of taking gabapentin? Gabapentin is generally a safe drug when taken according to a doctor's instructions, but there are some risks. Side effects can include sleepiness, loss of coordination, trouble with vision, and dry mouth. Less common side effects are weight gain, edema, fever, headaches, abnormal thoughts,...

We discussed the long term detrimental effects long term insomnia has on the body. It literally touches every organ, can cause diabetes, hypertension, heart attack, depression, stroke, and even some forms of cancer. Long term insomnia left untreated can shorten your lifespan. Lorna shares how we can update our brain’s software by using affirmations. She recommends present tense 3-4 words starting with “I am” … She says put it on your mirror with lipstick, put it on your screensaver. Repeat it often, the brain loves repetition. “Every behavior begins with a thought.” Don’t use the possessive form of a pronoun unless it is something you WANT to own. Don’t say “My depression, My anxiety, My insomnia. Be mindful of the words you say to yourself.. Your brain’s software is listening. What are the dangers of taking gabapentin? Gabapentin is generally a safe drug when taken according to a doctor’s instructions, but there are some risks. Side effects can include sleepiness, loss of coordination, trouble with vision, and dry mouth. Less common side effects are weight gain, edema, fever, headaches, abnormal thoughts,...

While Carl Rogers discussed the importance of the ‘core conditions' in counselling and therapy, clients often claim that what is also therapeutic is being seen at the point of their need rather than at the point of service availability. In this workshop, Professor Dryden will discuss the nature, principles and practice of single-session therapy that has been developed to provide a response to that need and to reflect the fact that the most frequent number of sessions that clients have internationally in publicly-funded therapy is ‘1'. The lecture will make the point that single-session is best viewed as a mindset rather than as an approach and will stress that SST can be practised by therapists using their preferred orientation. Professor Dryden will demonstrate his approach to SST with a volunteer from the audience. Windy Dryden is one of the leading practitioners and trainers in the UK in the Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) tradition of psychotherapy. He is best known for his work in Rational-Emotive Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (RECBT), a leading CBT approach. He has been working in the field of counselling and psychotherapy since 1975 and was one of the first people in Britain to be trained in CBT. Professor Dryden has published over 200 books and has trained therapists all over the world, in as diverse places as the UK, the USA, South Africa, Turkey and Israel. He is Emeritus Professor of Psychotherapeutic Studies at Goldsmiths University of London. Today my guest is Sana Atiq-Omar. She has a Master’s in Counselling Psychology with extensive experience working with people from diverse ethnic and religious backgrounds, and treating clients with a history of trauma. She has also worked with a wide range of ages (including children as young as preschool aged). She works with children from a child directed lens, letting them guide the process. Her experience includes co-creating a program for mothers and their young children, helping them create stronger bonds. Sana believes you are the expert of your life. Each person’s struggle is unique and therefore a one size fits all or “cookie cutter” therapy approach is not effective for most people. Her therapeutic approach is integrative, utilizing a combination of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Dialectic Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), mindfulness, art and play therapy. Join us we talk about what impacts our responses and what tools we can use to help ourselves and others! Please connect with Sana with her sliding scale Tele-therapy if needed! www.saocounselling.ca
One message that we hear time and time again from our guests here at the VetVault is that success, or happiness, or fulfilment or performance or whatever you want to call it, starts in your head. In this episode we explore what's happening inside that head of yours, and how we can influence it for the better. Veterinarian, public speaker and coach Dr Katie Ford graduated from the University of Liverpool in the UK in 2012 and gained her certificate in medicine in 2016. Externally she was very successful: she had a great career, she was a successful clinician who was loved by clients, she was one of the youngest vets ever to pass the certificate synoptic exam. The future looked bright, but internally things were a bit more complicated. She was at the mercy of her perfectionist imposter brain. That voice inside her head, the one that keeps you at work hours and hours after your shift ended while you double and triple check everything, was telling her that she was a fraud, and that she would never be good enough. With the power of mindset, consciousness and an understanding of the internal workings of her brain, Katie turned her life around. She has trained in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Broadband Consciousness and also completed programmes under the father of personal development himself, Bob Proctor of the Proctor-Gallagher Institute. Katie is passionate about positivity in practice, awesome workplace culture and career fulfilment. She currently practices as a locum veterinary surgeon across the North West, finding joy in meeting and influencing her colleagues in practice and though official coaching for vets and nurses on a 1:1 and group basis. Join us as we talk to Katie about imposter syndrome - what it is and how to identify and deal with it, about ways to train your mind and trick your body through visualisation, why we should be happy to sometimes be a failure, how to celebrate your wins without depending on them for your self-worth, and much more. In episode 8, I talk you through the pros and cons of using CBT for birth trauma and how it's less about the therapy approach you choose and more about the therapeutic fit. The WHO recommends two main Psychological approaches for the treatment of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). One is Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) the other is Eye Movement Desensitisation & Reprocessing (EMDR). Cognitive Behaviour works by working with someone's negative or 'stuck' thoughts about the trauma. This works on the idea that the brain doesn't realise that the threat of the trauma has passed, and/or what you want to do with information about the trauma. Imagine that somewhere in your birth experience (or watching someone's else's) you have the thought "this is it, I'm going to die". I remember in vivid detail after the birth of my first daughter being in so much pain, that I actually welcomed death. I remember being wheeled off to emergency surgery seeing my husband cradling our new baby and saying thinking "take care of her. This might be the last time I see you guys". I still well up with tears every single time I think, write, or speak about it, but part of the 'trick' to coping has been (a) realising I had that thought and (b) coaching my brain to realise that the threat has past, and I'm now in the present. Each time I'm able to do that, my heart rate lowers, my breathing rate reduces, my jaw relaxes and I can feel what it's like for my brain to back down, realising it's a memory and the actual threat has passed. The goal of CBT then is to help people catch the negative thoughts that pop up automatically and thereby reduce the awful feelings. CBT posits that all feelings and sensations from trauma (e.g., heart racing, sweating, feeling pannicky, feeling rage, avoiding) all start with a single thought. A large component (at least the way I work) is through writing – writing the event as it happened, in the past then in present and working with ‘hot spots’ – automatic negative thoughts. The goal is to work with thoughts and beliefs about the trauma so distress is reduced. PROS of CBT Evidence based Longitudinal research WHO supported Medicare rebate supported (10 sessions in Australia) Skills learned translate well into other areas of life - confidence, parenting, anxiety, depression, fears and just getting yourself out of a funk. Easy to find a practitioner CONS of CBT Potentially the ‘best’ we have but still doesn’t remedy all PTSD Gold standard CBT for PTSD is 20+ sessions, roughly 12 months of work Medicare will only rebate for 10 sessions, meaning client either has to fork over the rest of payment, wait until new calendar year, or find bulk-billing (there are no financial benefits for mental health workers to bulk-bill, unlike for GPs) Can potentially be interpreted as blaming (‘your thoughts are the problem’) Even imaginal exposure is too confronting for some Cognitive therapies are not great for people with low self-reflection
