In our current world of flashy social media and aesthetic ideals, fleeting physical alterations in pictures and videos exist in the presence of Photoshop, filters, and airbrush. However, there exists a whole dominion in the sciences that seeks to help others achieve these physical ideals. Cosmetic and plastic surgery have successfully allowed people to look the way they want to...and sometimes not (Hi "Botched"). But our current generation also pursues a new movement that seems to oppose the intent of these photo-editing programs: self-love. The question is...does the medical field of "tweaking" surgeries defy this pursuit of self-love? Are cosmetics and plastics just all vanity? There is no better person to talk to about this controversial topic than someone who masters in this very field of physical alteration: facial cosmetic surgeon Dr. Yirae Ort from Bellevue, Washington.Receiving her bachelor's degree in the sciences from Youngstown State University in 2006, attaining her Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree from The Ohio State University in 2012 and subsequently her Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree from Case Western Reserve University in 2015 coupled with a residency, externship, and fellowships in Facial Plastic Surgery, Orthognathic Surgery, Cleft Craniofacial Surgery, Cosmetic Surgery, and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Dr. Ort is truly an expert in the science and art of helping others attain the facial presentations that they desire (facelifts, implants, Botox, fillers, liposuction, and of the like). From her thoughts about facial feminization surgery to the rejection and infection risks of implants to the viability of liposuction for long-term fat reduction and to the psychosocial and psychological effects of cosmesis, Dr. Ort underlines the importance of understanding and respecting one's informed choice for their body. To be in a body that one is happy about and physically healthy in...that is self-love.This episode includes brief discussions around the topics of bullying and body dysmorphia.Livestream Air Date: June 19, 2021Dr. Yirae Ort: IG @dr.yirae.ort, Web: www.ortmdsurgery.comFriends of Franz: IG @friendsoffranzpodChristian Franz (Host): IG @chrsfranz & YT Christian Franz

Our guest on this episode of the Best Practices Show podcast is Dr. Lauralee Nygaard, a renowned periodontist and long-time member and leader of the Seattle Study Club. Lauralee chose dentistry as a profession because of the flexibility paired with the challenges of serving clients in all situations. Early on in her career, she had to work through a lot of imposter syndrome, spurred on by negative referrals and critiques of other dentists in her area, but she has found that the key to her practice's success is taking exceptional care of her patients and the rest will fall into place. A lifelong learner, Lauralee has gleaned a lot of knowledge from thought leaders outside of the dental industry. She learned from Malcolm Gladwell about the intrinsic need for people to be in relationships, which cemented her belief that taking exceptional care of her patients would drive positive word-of-mouth referrals, and this continues to be her #1 source of new clients to this day. Lauralee has also found a great source of community, as well as personal and professional enrichment, through the Seattle Study Club symposium and her local club. She has been mentored by and has been a mentor to many clinicians over the years, and these relationships have been essential during this uncertain environment due to COVID-19 for finding mutual support and encouragement. In addition to signing up for the Seattle Study Club symposium coming up January 29-31, 2021, Lauralee challenges listeners to connect with 2 people this week just to check in and see how they are doing during COVID-19. You may be surprised by the impact of a single phone call. The five love languages include words of affirmation, acts of service, receiving gifts, quality time, and physical touch. Not everyone responds to these five love languages in the same way. Some people value gifts while others prefer to build relationships by spending quality time with someone they want to connect with. By understanding each of the five love languages further, you can use that knowledge to build both your personal and professional relationships – including the connections you build with patients in your dental practice. In this episode, we discuss: Why it's important to show appreciation to your team and vice versa How to improve your team's communication skills with each other and patients Understanding how the five love languages work when it comes to improving relationships Why you should figure out what love language each team member responds to the most How to resolve conflict using your knowledge on the five love languages How to identify your blind spots and respond to people with a different love language than your own If you would like to connect with Dr. Trent Redfearn and learn more about using the five love languages to help build deeper connections with team members and patients, you can reach out to him via his LinkedIn profile.
