As we close out 2023, it's time to take stock of the Communities Movement and consider where we might be headed in the future. In this episode we are joined by new FIC co-director Daniel Greenberg, who brings his deep experience from the ecovillage world, as well years living in and researching international communities like Findhorn and Auroville to his visions for what is possible for collaborative culture, communities, and the people who live and grow inside them. In 1999, Daniel Greenberg founded the non-profit Living Routes, which partnered with UMass-Amherst to run study abroad programs based in ecovillages around the world. Over 1,500 students were transformed by these immersive experiences. Daniel left Living Routes in 2012 to start a new social venture called Earth Deeds, which offers online tools for individuals and groups to “onset” their unavoidable CO2 emissions and support meaningful sustainability projects. Daniel has been a leading advocate for sustainability within international education and the ecovillage movement. LEXINGTON, Ky. (September 7, 2023) – For many first-generation students, overcoming fears are an ever-present part of their college experience. From visiting campuses, to complicated admissions, to making new friends, to leaving home, the uncertainty that can come with every step in the process can be a daunting challenge. This past summer, 60 first-generation University of Kentucky students embraced their fears and expanded their horizons on a program that many called “life changing.” Explore First: Careers, Cultures and Connections (Explore First), an education abroad opportunity developed by UK's International Center and the Office for Student Success, is an integrated global learning experience with curricular and co-curricular elements. It is focused on career readiness with meaningful connections between academic attainment and post-graduation success. The experience is designed and implemented intentionally to equip and empower first-generation students who have made the bold decision to study abroad. The Explore First program expands access to education abroad opportunities. During the program's launch in summer 2023, four cohorts of 15 first-generation students embarked on a three-week education abroad program to either London, England, or Dublin, Ireland, with little cost to the student. Students developed transferable skills, such as critical thinking, problem solving, adaptability, independence and self-efficacy. Students completed and earned credit hours through a course that enhanced their career readiness skills. On this episode of ‘Behind the Blue', Kody Kiser and Tiana Thé from UK Strategic Communications converse with two of the administrators who helped develop the program: Executive Director of Education Abroad & Exchanges Niamh Larson, and Associate Provost for Internationalization Sue Roberts. They discuss how this pilot Explore First program may lead to greater opportunities for first-generation students, the continued importance of UK being an international destination for educational opportunities, the impact education abroad has on students as well as their families, and more. On next week's 'Behind the Blue', UK's Vice President for Student Success Kirsten Turner joins the podcast to discuss the part her office played in helping Explore First become a reality, as well as the other efforts they're putting forth to provide foundational support to all of our students.” "Behind the Blue" is available on iTunes, Google Play, Stitcher and Spotify. Become a subscriber to receive new episodes of “Behind the Blue” each week. UK's latest medical breakthroughs, research, artists and writers will be featured, along with the most important news impacting the university. According to NASFA, higher education institutions in the United States have lost nearly $1 billion due to the shortened or canceled programs. Study abroad programs are important for students as they provide critical competencies and experiences in an ever-expanding global workforce. While almost all institutions re-engaged in their study abroad initiatives following the onset of COVID-19 in March 2020, more investments in international programs are needed to ensure the United States remains competitive globally.Learn more about CITI Program at https://about.citiprogram.org/

Episode #61 - Communicating your Value PropositionI just came back from attending one of my first client-focused conferences in 2 years – The Forum on Education Abroad. Oh, my goodness – such a good time. This was the first conference in 2 years for almost everyone and man was it great to see so many people! So many hugs and laughter. The conference was good for the soul on so many levels. It also made me think about my company's value proposition and how it differs from so many of my competitors who were all at the conference. In the age of the internet, your customers have more options than ever before. Long gone are the days when people visited the hardware store, grocery store, or insurance agent in town to buy what they need. Google now puts dozens of your competitors in the palm of your customer's hand.If you don't make it clear why customers should choose you over those competitors, they'll either buy from the competitor who best communicates their value or make a choice based on price alone. So how do you stand out from the competition? Capture your customers' attention? And drive sales based on your value rather than your pricing? The answer is that you define and communicate your unique value proposition.A value proposition is a short, memorable statement that quickly communicates why customers should buy from you instead of your competitor. An effective value proposition will highlight the benefit that most resonates with your customer. Ideally, this will also be a benefit your competitors aren't advertising—which is what makes it a unique value proposition.Communicating the right value proposition is critical if you want to advertise effectively, attract customers, and drive sales. Remember: Your value proposition has to actually speak to your customers' goals or problems. This is critical, so don't just guess what your target audience wants to hear—ask them! As I wrap up this week's podcast, here are my 3 tips to successfully communicate your value:1. Identify your target audience and buyer personas2. Speak to the needs of your target audience3. Train your team to say and use your value proposition everywhereI'm going to leave you with a quote from Neil Patel. Neil is a New York Times Bestselling author. The Wall Street Journal calls him a top influencer on the web and Forbes says he is one of the top 10 marketers – definitely someone we should pay attention to:“Your value proposition is an answer to the question: ‘Why should I buy from you and not your competitor?'”Thank you so much for listening to, A Life You Love: Sales Tips with Jennifer Fisher – I look forward to continuing the conversation next week. Now go LIVE, the sales life you love!Connect with me on LinkedIn and let me know how you communicate your unique value proposition!

Emigrant's Life - Stories of people who left their country to chase a better life
Arif Rahman is a research scientist from Bangladesh. His immigration journey began when he made a plan to study for his Ph.D. outside of his country. Arif believed that there are larger opportunities abroad, so he persevered to apply to numerous schools outside Bangladesh. After writing hundreds of emails, Arif was finally recognized by an Italian professor willing to sponsor him to study abroad. With his intelligence as a scientist, Arif was able to win the Best Young Scientist award, which opened an opportunity for him to move to the US. Arif recognizes himself as lucky because of how easy his immigration journey was compared with the fellow immigrants he met while he was in Italy. It was this humbling experience that fostered Arif's compassion for people and his dream to give back to his home country, Bangladesh, in the future. Arif's story is a great way to remind us that life is a series of unstoppable challenges. Evading it would only make it worse. Learn to embrace the difficulties of your path, get up, and show that you're far stronger than whatever life throws at you.

Have you ever visited France? If so, how warmly were you received by the French people? Today, we’re in the exquisite Champagne region of France and we’re delighted to be interviewing the author, Janet Hulstrand. Janet is an American living in the French countryside near Essoyes, the small village where Renoir had his summer home. Over the years, Janet noticed that many Americans tended to get off on the wrong foot in France because they didn’t know the basic rules of French etiquette, and they didn’t seem to understand quite how important those rules are in France. So she decided to help them by writing a delightfully amusing book, called Demystifying the French, How to Love Them and Make Them Love You. Stay tuned, to find out more! Janet is a writer, editor, and teacher, living between France and the United States. She has been creating, directing, and teaching literature courses for the Education Abroad programs at Hunter and Queens Colleges of the City University of New York in Paris, Hawaii, Florence, and Cuba since 1997. She teaches literary and cultural classes at Politics & Prose Bookstore in Washington D.C. and she also leads book groups at the American Library in Paris. Janet’s articles and essays have been published in Bonjour Paris, France Revisited, the Christian Science Monitor, International Educator, Smithsonian.com, and many more publications. Be sure to tune in today, to find out what Janet has done to help Americans understand why the French are the way they are. Show highlights: Janet discusses what motivated her to write a book. Janet explains how she ended up moving to the French countryside. Over the years, she has watched Americans get off on the wrong foot in France. Janet explains why Americans are sometimes not received very warmly by the French. In her book, Janet shares the perspectives of several other people, as well as her own. Learning to speak French can be very challenging. The way the French greet people can really stress foreigners out! Janet talks about the time when France started to feel like home for her. Learning to respect the land you live in. “No” doesn’t always mean “no” to the French. Why you need to let the French help you solve a problem. Some advice for Americans who want to move to France. Janet talks about her inspirational Writing from the Heart workshops that aren’t really workshops. Janet loves to go to Paris very often! You can have some delightful interactions with most of the Champagne makers in Janet’s area. I think it’s a wasted opportunity to only talk about Exodus every year, and our own story of liberation. Because if we’ve been lucky enough to get this free, we owe it to everyone else, we owe it to look back while we’re standing in the Red Sea and make sure everyone is behind us. — Becca AbuRakia-Einhorn This Passover, we talk with Becca and Waseem AbuRakia-Einhorn about their annual tradition: the Palestinian Freedom Seder. In this seder, everything from the Haggadah to the food is focused on celebrating Jewish and Palestinian culture, bringing attention to the oppression of the Palestinian people, and making connections between the Passover story of Jewish liberation and the Palestinian struggle for liberation today. This episode of Unsettled was produced by Max Freedman and Ilana Levinson and edited by Max Freedman. Music by Nat Rosenzweig. Almost a decade ago serendipity landed Becca AbuRakia-Einhorn in the Intensive Arabic Semester in Israel, instead of a regular Hebrew Ulpan, which ignited her passion in learning about Palestine and Israel. Becca grew up Jewish and was lucky enough to meet a wonderful Palestinian Muslim man at a barbecue in Israel (surprise: he later became her husband). After a year and a half in Israel, she and her husband moved to the United States and later had three weddings--a civil wedding, a Palestinian wedding in Israel, and a Jewish wedding in DC. She currently lives in Washington, DC and spends her spare time organizing with IfNotNow, a movement of Jewish Americans working to end American Jewish support for the Occupation of Palestine. This year, she and her husband will host their 7th annual AbuRakia-Einhorn Palestinian Freedom Seder. By day, she works as the Coordinator of Education Abroad at Gallaudet University, the world's first and only university designed to be barrier-free for the deaf and hard of hearing. She spends her days making education abroad opportunities more accessible. She speaks (with varying degrees of success and confidence) English, Spanish, Portuguese, American Sign Language, Palestinian Arabic, and Hebrew. She graduated with a bachelor's degree in Media Studies from Pomona College. She went on to get an MA in International Affairs with a focus on Israel/Palestine from American University's School of International Service where she wrote her thesis on the Fight for Civil Rights for Palestinian Citizens of Israel. She is currently one month away from finishing her MPA from American University's School of Public Affairs. Waseem AbuRakia-Einhorn hails from the small Palestinian village of Meiser inside Israel. He currently works as the IT Services Manager at American University's School of Public Affairs. He has a BS in Business Administration from American University's Kogod School of Business and is working on finishing his MS in Business Analytics, also from American University's Kogod School of Business. Universities in the US are generally staffed by two types of people: those who teach and those who manage. Professors on the one hand and administrators on the other. But a growing class of administrators has emerged: those you blend scholarship and administration into one. My guests today, Bernhard Streitwieser and Anthony Ogden, call this new class of administrator “Scholar-Practitioners.” These types of employees often hold PhDs, use research to inform their practical work in administrative offices, and contribute to scholarly debates on the internationalization of higher education. Yet, since these types of employees are not in academic positions, the knowledge they produce is often seen to be of a lower quality than that produced by professors. Bernhard Streitwieser and Anthony Ogden have recently published a co-edited volume that explores the many issues of scholar-practitioners. Their book highlights the history, challenges, and personal stories of scholar-practitioners around the US. Ultimately Bernhard and Anthony argue that scholar-practitioners are a valuable part of both the administrative side of universities because they incorporate theory into practice on a daily basis and contribute to scholarly debates within the field of international higher education. Bernhard Streitwieser is an Assistant Professor of International Education at The George Washington University Graduate School of Education and Human Development. Anthony Ogden is currently the executive director of Education Abroad and Exchanges and an adjunct assistant professor in Educational Policy and Evaluation Studies at the University of Kentucky. In May he’ll move to Michigan State University. I spoke with Bernhard and Anthony during the annual Comparative and International Education Conference in early March.

When they began their studies at UC Santa Barbara in the 1980s, Greg Massa and Raquel Krach would never have imagined themselves where they are today: growing organic crops on a family farm outside of Chico. But a tropical biology program in Costa Rica sparked an appreciation of the role of ecology in agriculture and kindled a love – for farming and for each other – that set a new trajectory for their lives.
