Deep Dive - Jim Goodwin and Tom Ferrier of The Call on Reconciled (1986)

With the recent re-release of the breakthru Call album Reconciled on vinyl and remastered, we felt it was a good time to welcome back keyboardist Jim Goodwin and guitarist Tom Ferrier (for the first time) to go deep on the album that changed everything for the band. The album includes the powerful singles "Everywhere I Go" and "I Still Believe", which was made iconic by the "Sexy Sax Man" (and friend of the show) Tim Cappello in Lost Boys. We also discuss the spiritual lyrics by the late great frontman Michael Been, working with Peter Gabriel and Jim Kerr of Simple Minds, and whether the album qualifies as "Christian Rock". Oh, and what's the deal with the baby on the cover? All of this and more will be revealed, and you'll be reminded what a strong album this is. If you think about some of the most common advice our kids get when they are trying to make friends, it's usually things like: *Just go up and introduce yourself *Ask them what they are talking about *Don't talk to strangers   None of these strategies help people make friends. They actually make things more awkward and cause people who try them to be LESS likely to make connections with others.   In the last 8 months, I've been to 2 countries, 11 states, and Puerto Rico. And I've made amazing connections with other humans in EVERY one of those places!    How??   In this week's episode, I'm sharing how I make friends everywhere I go.    It sure as heck isn't by being afraid to talk to strangers, or by going up to someone and saying, "Hi, I'm Steph!", or by randomly interrupting a conversation to ask people what they are talking about.    Here's a clip from the episode:   It's important to be okay with knowing that, sometimes when we have a really great interaction with somebody or really great experience with somebody, that may be all there is to it. We may not ever talk to them again or see them again. And so part of talking to strangers is being okay with that. Part of talking to strangers is being okay with the fact that this may be the last time you ever talk to them again. I actually think that's a good thing. I think it takes a lot of the anxiety out of it. Because even if you try to start a conversation with a stranger and it's super awkward and doesn't go well, you're never gonna see them again. It's okay. I think that actually makes it easier than trying to start a conversation with someone that you actually will see again: somebody at work, somebody at school, somebody at, you know, one of your hobbies, I think it actually makes it easier. It's almost like strangers are for practice!

This episode starts on Tuesday. Unfortunately that is a day I have to spend in the office. Finding a way to weasel out of working a few times that day, I find myself in a little bit of trouble. I run into a few traffic jams that make me late for a meeting. Wednesday is a totally different experience. I leave early in the morning and I'm able to hit all the casinos I want to, while still getting home in time for an early evening meeting. I have decent variants Everywhere I Go with a few rough patches. I also run into a few thunderstorms that got a little scary at times. Trucks with items falling off them in the middle of the highway. Cars getting into accidents. High Speed police chases and sports cars hitting City buses. This episode has a lot. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/mw-usa/support

THE WELL OF THE SOULS   A few October days in Yosemite found me sitting on the edge of a valley full of thought pondering faith, boring Christianity, and a lack of curiosity among the faithful.  I listened to God breathe in the solitude and babble in the waterfall.   Indiana Jones crashed through my reverie on his way to freedom and a hippie prophet popped out of a pit toilet with a word from the Lord.  You might just wade through this unusual episode and hear something said to help you realize you are not alone.  Or you might just dismiss it due to a lack of curiosity   Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is guaranteed to at least introduce you to two great songs by Becca Jordan, a singer-songwriter you need to know.     Come sit on the edge of your faith with us and look into the well of your soul.   Featuring "Same Old" and "Everywhere I Go" by Becca Jordan. Fresh off the release of her latest single “Everywhere I Go”, Kaitlyn Kohler was kind enough to join us for an in-depth interview surrounding the song. Kaitlyn Kohler, the Texas-born country artist, warmly extends an invitation to her listeners with her latest single, "Everywhere I Go." As the daughter of a Navy Pilot, Kohler experienced a nomadic upbringing, constantly on the move until eventually settling in Beaumont, TX. Through her music, she beautifully conveys the idea that home and faith are constants that accompany us wherever we go. In our interview with Kaitlyn, we covered so many topics, but truly got an inside look on what this song means to her. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/wewriteaboutmusic/support

“Wherever I go, there I am.” That's not a particularly profound statement when you first hear it, but when we spend time considering its implications, we begin to understand the significant role we play in our own lives. If I'm the one who is always present, then it means I was there for my worst decisions, my regrettable mistakes, and my relational challenges. What if my biggest problem isn't someone else? What if my biggest problem is me? How do I save me from myself? Surprisingly, the account of the Resurrection of Jesus provides a framework for fixing the thing I seem unable to fix: myself.

Affirm: I am at home everywhere I go! Home…we end the journey where we began. As spiritual beings having a human experience, our true home is in the realm of Spirit. We come into this human experience as perfect, whole, complete beings…one with the Creator that brought us into being. As we embark on the human journey, we encounter danger and misfortune. We can get lost, forgetting where we came from and the truth of who we are. But the truth never changes. Those who dare to confront the dark cave of their fears are the ones who are transformed. Spiritual heroes are those who remember the truth of who they are and where they come from. When we recognize that truth, we can be at home wherever we may go. We so embody Oneness that others are at home in our presence. We then empower others to remember what it is to be at home and to be the heroes of their own journeys. Intro  Andre Collins Author of Everywhere I Go. About a little Martian named Martin who everywhere he goes he see people on their phones and missing out on the world!  Andre never thought of himself as an author at all but he always liked telling stories! Andre wrote a personal and timely book for new parents. In a day and age when we are all stuck to our phones Martin is here to teach us all valuable lessons. First that we  should not be on your phone all day; especially when someone needs you to be present be present for them, like your little ones and maybe even big ones like older kids and your spouse. And lastly Andre wanted to show his son, you can do anything you want.   Top three takeaways  The time you can spend with your family is so valuable and kids are only kids once so it is important to be around and be an example as much as you can.  Also how many of us take the person standing next to us for granted and we think they are always going to be there, and the truth is they just may not be.   Lastly in order to maximize time with your loved ones you have to be not only physically present. But you have to be mentally and emotionally present too.  Call to Action  Everywhere I Go Book   What is Next!  Thank you for supporting this show by listening and sharing with friends! In which I rant about our workaholic, patriarchal society and encourage you to love your body as an act of beautiful rebellion.   In today's episode I discuss how hard it is to love our bodies (and ourselves) and suggest a framework of befriending and showing up, rather than forcing ourselves to jump into self-love when it feels false and unattainable. I strongly reject  wellness fads that equate health and self care with thinness, culturally sanctioned attractiveness and a "no pain no gain" mentality. Instead we explore being kind to our bodies just as they are, right now.  I share practical and magical ways to tune into your body, and go through the basics of a body listening practice. By creating a personal dream book, we can reprogram our brains in a way that every decision we make will be in alignment with our goals. A personal dream book will bring you more opportunities in order to be successful. Multi-instrumentalist (fiddle, mandolin, guitar and piano) singer-songwriter; two time Juno Award winner; and inductee in the BC Entertainment Hall of Fame, Shari Ulrich has released 23 albums to date during a storied career that has also included work with Pied Pumkin, The Hometown Band, Ulrich Henderson Forbes (UHF), Bentall Taylor Ulrich (BTU), and the bluegrass band, The High Bar Gang. As a songwriter, Shari is a huge believer in serving the song. “It’s not about the ego or proving you are a great player. When I’m performing I’m celebrating the song and what it does for people.” Her most recent solo release, 2014’s “Everywhere I Go” took home the Canadian Folk Music Award for (English) Songwriter of the year. She’s currently hard at work on a new solo project and will be touring Ontario in May 2018 with her trio featuring her daughter Julia Graff (on violin, mandolin, guitar & vocals) and fellow High Bar Gang member Kirby Barber (on bass, guitar and vocals). Shari Ulrich sat down with Jan Hall from Folk Roots Radio at the 2017 Folk Music Ontario conference. To learn more about her music, visit http://shariulrich.com. The Call were one of the preeminent alternative bands of the 80s and early 90s. They never quite cracked the top 40, but had several hits on college radio like "Let The Day Begin", "Everywhere I Go" and "The Walls Came Down". Regular listeners know of my affection for the Lost Boys soundtrack, well they were the originators of "I Still Believe" which was covered excellently by former guest Tim Cappello (there's a great story about it in here). The band came to an end in the 90s and frontman Michael Been focused his attention on helping his son Robert's band Black Rebel Motorcycle Club (one of my favorite bands of the last 20 years) get going. Unfortunately, after a BRMC gig on August 19, 2010 Michael died suddenly of a heartattack, bringing a tragic end to a great band. This week we talk to Call keyboardist Jim Goodwin about life in the band, the aftermath of Michael's death, and what he's been doing since. Enjoy!   http://www.the-call-band.com/

More Than a Song - Discovering the Truth of Scripture Hidden in Today's Popular Christian Music

Sometimes we gain a new perspective and it changes everything. This happened for me in a Bible study in college. This happened for Tim Timmons as his daughter prayed a prayer for him and he wrote a song about it. "Everywhere I Go" leads us to Scripture where we learn some important truths that may not only change the way we pray, but the way we live. May we long to join God in what He is doing more than His blessing of our own feeble plans. On this episode I discuss: 150 episodes...WHAT?!!!...interested in the story behind this podcast? See Episode 1 or Episode 122 Behind the Song of "Everywhere I Go" by  Tim Timmons - YouTube Video The impact "Experiencing God" by Henry Blackaby made on my walk with Christ God is always at work around you - John 5:16-18 What God declared about Sabbath - Exodus 35:1-3 The Son only does what He sees the Father doing - John 5:19 The Father loves us and will show us what He is doing - John 5:20 The Father will show us HOW - John 5:20 Jesus has been given authority from the Father - John 5:21-23 Asking hard questions while reading Scripture, but not getting discouraged and quitting Listen...believe...have eternal life - John 5:24 We must believe the Bible - John 5:39-47 Praying, "God I know you are with me. Show me where you are at work so I can join You in it." Taking a B.I.T.E. out of Scripture - our Bible Interaction Tool Exercises this week are: Read in context Ask questions     Additional Resources Lyrics and Chords This Week's Challenge If you follow my pattern this week you will get inspired by an outside source (like a song, or a book) and it will lead you to Scripture. Once you are led there you will read it in context (in our case this week, the entire chapter of John 5). While you are reading, ask questions and jot them down. Either the Scripture will answer your questions, send you exploring other Scriptures for clarification, or there is enough you DO understand you can set aside your confusion for now and apply the parts that are clear. These are all Bible Interaction Tool Exercises (BITEs) I use on a regular basis to interact with God's Word. Incorporate them into your weekly study and you will begin to improve your interactions with God's Word.
